Miriam and Mike,

Thank you for the phone number. I will move it out of the inbox and put it
in the correct folder.

Miriam,

I lost my vision when I was fifty seven years old. They tried to teach me
Braille but my finger tips couldn't feel it. I don't think I am very techy.
My memory is getting old as I am.

Thanks both of you for your help.

Take care,

Hello,

I had the information in an email that someone sent to the list. I have
looked in every folder and can't find it. I have a finger that keeps
deleting emails when I fall asleep reading them. I must not have moved it
from my deleted folder.

Thank you for your help.

[JAWS-Users] JAWS 16 DOCUMENT OCR, REPORT AND OBSERVATION

2014-11-26 Thread John Justice
I have worked with the new Jaws 16 Document OCR and found it to be quite
effective. There are some observations I can make in hopes that this might
help some of the list members whom are having trouble with that feature.

I have attached a typical .pdf document. I hope that Mailman won't strip it
out.

1.The new Document OCR works on the type of .pdf document which
cannot be read normally by Jaws. This document is what is sometimes
referred to as an "imaged .pdf document". Rather than an actual copy of the
document in its original form, a photocopy is made which is then
transmitted. For the sighted user, this does not present a problem since
the document is visible when opened. That kind of document can be exported
to an exterior program such as Open Book which then scans the document and
is able to read it. Microsoft Word has a feature which can also convert the
imaged material but it can be difficult to use.

2. When a document like this is opened, the only thing a Jaws user
will hear is "Alert! Empty document" At that point, the new Document OCR
can be very helpful.

1.Press Insert+Spacebar. Wait for the spoken confirmation, then
press the letter D. A spoken confirmation will be heard: "Document OCR
Started." Please note. This process is very slow. Once it has started,
there is no way to tell whether the process is working unless the user tries
to Alt Tab away from that screen. In that event, a message is spoken:
"Document OCR In Progress. Gathering elements."
If anyone would like a copy of it sent to them personally, I will be happy
to do that.
I believe what might be causing the concern expressed by some of the list
members is the silence once the command is engaged and the length of time it
takes to process a document.
This is a five page document describing the condition of a house and
detailing issues that the new owner might encounter. The results aren't
perfect by any means but they are much better than anything OCR has been
able to accomplish up till now. For the record, processing a five page
imaged .pdf takes about two to three minutes. Once the operation is
completed, Jaws begins reading immediately.
MY most sincere compliments to the designers at Freedom Scientific for their
efforts in perfecting this valuable tool.

2014-11-26 Thread David Ferrin
John my friend, I'm surprised at you. I have never allowed attachments on
any list I manage. I have included on the server for quite a while now the
PDF file that Jonathon demonstrated on the pod cast for folks to try out.

Now as long as we're on the subject I must give praise and this is something
I do not often do since quite a lot of the updates in JAWS for the past few
years do not normally apply to my needs, granted I'm probably in the
minority on that point.

All this year I have tried to get my bank to create accessible PDF files
without any luck. Just a few minutes ago I downloaded my credit card
statement and ran the OCR feature new in 16. I must give my Steelers hat a
tip to FS because finally I can read the thing without running the risk of
breaking my desk in the process.

For my needs 16 has hit it out of the park.

[JAWS-Users] JAWS and Youtube

2014-11-26 Thread Patti
Hey Gang,

Having an issue where JAWS and Youtube are struggling for supremacy.

When using JAWS 13, 14, 15 and trying to access Youtube on any browser
(Mozilla, IE, and Chrome) and both Windows 7 and 8.1 the page won't load and
JAWS quits working. Actually, all keyboard functionality for the computer
freezes. I've noticed that the culprit seems to be the advertisement that
tries to load when initially launching the Youtube home page. I've seen
this more on 32-bit systems, but there still seems to be an issue with
64-bit as well. Does anyone have an idea for a fix or at least a work
around for this issue?

All systems are fully updated and browsers and JAWS are all current as well,
just in case you ask.

Thanks for any help you can give.

Patti

Hi,
For this and similar pdf's, google: pdf2txt, which is a utility
developed by jamal mazrui that gets around the 'protection failures'

freeware utilities, and is a sometime scripter for JAWS. It uses
Google's Tesseract OCR software. it doesn't always deliver the goods,
but in this instance it probably will.

Lenny,

In Adobe Reader do you have, Protected Mode, disabled? If not try the
following if your running Adobe XI:

Note that there are links with the Security Enhanced section to
explain the

consequences of
unchecking items there, and you may want to find out what they have to
say.

1. Open Adobe from your desktop or start menu shortcut. Go into
preferences

with control-k. JAWS lands on an item in a tree view.
If you have been here before, it will be the item you last opened.
Arrow
down to Security Enhanced. Note that this is the item below
"Security."
Then uncheck these 2 options, the 2nd option is not necessary to
uncheck

but, optional:
Enable Protected Mode at startup, needs to be unchecked.
Enable Enhanced Security, does not need to be unchecked.
Note. When making changes in the Security Enhanced section, you will
be told

that Adobe needs to be restarted, but you can wait to finish the other
changes first.

2. Launch the Edit menu, scroll down to the Accessibility submenu and
open

it. Scroll down to the Set-up Assistant and press enter. The Set-Up
Assistant has five screens, but the only change you have to make is on
the
last, screen 5 of 5. Go through all the screens, pressing spacebar on
"Next"
in each instance, until you reach the fifth and final screen. Here,
tab to
the check box labeled "Display PDF documents in the web browser" and
make

sure it
is unchecked. It may be checked by default. Then tab to the Okay
button &

press enter to save & close.

Take care.

Hi Al,
Maybe you did not understand what I meant.

I have pasted over 2,500 mp3 tracks,
Into the iTunes folder in the media folder.

And all the artist, track name are in the iTunes library.
Album covers will be in the iTunes folder.
I think iTunes converts the format and includes all the information you
mention automatically into iTunes.
I dislike iTunes for it's weird interface menus.
I also, think this new version of itunes is making it harder to move music
into your iPhone that was converted from mp3 to ma4m tracks,
The reason is: iTunes wants you to buy their music instead.
Just like itunes wants to control the media player in your PC with iTunes.

That's why I use the WMP player in this laptop only.
Because I can control the music better and not let itunes control my music
folder.
My other laptop has iTunes and it's not here with me.
Al, do you know how to select which music player is going to play in your
computer using jaws to select the player?

If, it's itunes, WMP or winamp?

No, it is all the associated info that somehow gets attached to the file.
Things like Artist name, track, genre, track name. When you rip a CD to the

Hi, I don't know what you guys are talking about?
Are you talking about renaming a music track in your music folder before
moving it to the iTune media folder???.

Jaws can do that without downloading anything.

Everybody does things differently.

Thanks, this was the ticket. I downloaded the one from the JAWS site, think
it is version 2.4 from 2009. Works great

Best,
Al

I have always used MP3Tag. The version I use is an older one. A while back I
upgraded to a newer version, but didn't care for how Jaws worked with it so
I downgraded. I have no idea what version they're on now as I've stayed on
my old one since it does everything I want. I'd have to check later what
version of the program it is.

Give it a try and see if the latest MP3Tag works for you.
It's what I use to edit tags before importing into iTunes.

Are there any JAWS friendly programs out there that allow editing missing or
inaccurate info in metadata tags without uncompressing an mp3 file? I know
you can do this in ITunes but would like to complete the task on the source
file before importing into that beast

Best,

Al
