Not totally sure what you mean, Excel will read the cells as you navigate with
the arrow keys.
Does shift+spacebar help as that will select the entire colum, or ctrl+space
bar anyway.

Hi,

How do you make excel read columns as you navigate through them.
What I mean is if I'm keeping score during a game, how do I make it read the
names when I scroll down the individual columns? What's the keystroke for
that? I have excel 2013 and a windows 8.1 machine running jaws 16.

thanks,

Re: [JAWS-Users] Office 2013 help needed

2015-07-01 Thread Brian Lee
Hi Carolyn,

In Word the CTRL with page down or CTRL with page up is not just to move
page by page. If you use the Go To box for example to go to a bookmark,
once you go to the bookmark and press escape to dismiss the box the CTRL
page down goes to the next bookmark. If you do a find for a word (and find
it) after pressing escape the CTRL page down goes to the next occurrence of
the word. If you use the Go To box and go to a footnote, after pressing
escape to dismiss the box the CTRL with page down goes to the next footnote.
The CTRL with page up goes to the previous one. I think some of the
confusion might be when I talked about moving between the dialog box and
document, which is a method I don't use. If you are just finding a string
of text or going to something like a bookmark then once you find it the
easier method is to press escape and use CTRL with page down to go to the
next occurrence of it.

If you want to use CTRL with page down to move down page by page after using
those keystrokes to find something then use CTRL with G and in the Go To box
type a P followed by the page number you want to go to and press enter key.
Press escape and you should be on the page you specified. The CTRL with
page down or CTRL with page up keystrokes will then be used for moving page
by page.

Take care.

 Hi Brian,
I know somewhat how the find replace works.

I was trying to follow what you were trying to explain and it seem
confusing, especially the alt + delete to find the next occurrence?.
After you run it once, you can go back and change the words around to
 find

 replace again.
Press escape anytime, you should return back to the doc,
Alt + tab and you can return back to the find replace, until you close
 it.
You have to pay attension to the options as you tab.

 Hello Cuong,

If you are just finding a word and not replacing it then you can use
 shift
with F6 to move to the document pane, use Alt with delete key to get your
position, and then use F6 to move back to the navigation pane. Press
spacebar on the Find Next button, use shift key with F6 and read the
position with Alt and delete. You don't have to keep jumping between the
panes using shift with F6 to move to the document and F6 to move back to
 the
navigation pane. Once you find an occurrence of what you are finding and
move to the document pane you can just use CTRL with page down to find
 the
next occurrence or CTRL with page up to find a previous occurrence and
 check
position with the Alt and delete key.

If you are wanting to use replace option but not the replace all
 choice
then you first use CTRL with H to move to the page of the dialog where
 you
can do replacements. It is a good idea to start at the top of the
 document
first. After typing in what you want to find and what you want it
 replaced
with you can use Alt with F to activate the Find Next button. Press
 escape,
use Alt+Delete to get position, and then use CTRL with H again and use
 the
Alt+R to do the replacing. You can then use escape key, find position
 using
alt with delete, use CTRL with H followed by Alt with R to replace it or

Re: [JAWS-Users] question about Excel and JAWS

2015-07-01 Thread Jim Pursley
From my experience, JAWS won't read the column and row headers
simultaneously. You have to scroll to hear the column and row headers.
Once you know the row you are in, then scroll across columns. The
keystroke method only reads columns or rows, not both. Insert v in
Excel to Workbooks, Worksheets and Regions then to Title Reading will
get your spreadsheet reading both columns and rows - but not both at
once. JAWS will only know where your headings are if you pointthe
cursor to the nexus of row and column headings.

How do you make excel read columns as you navigate through them.
What I mean is if I'm keeping score during a game, how do I make it read the
names when I scroll down the individual columns? What's the keystroke for
that? I have excel 2013 and a windows 8.1 machine running jaws 16.

 thanks,

Hi Brian,
I know somewhat how the find replace works.

I was trying to follow what you were trying to explain and it seem
confusing, especially the alt + delete to find the next occurrence?.
After you run it once, you can go back and change the words around to find

replace again.
Press escape anytime, you should return back to the doc,
Alt + tab and you can return back to the find replace, until you close
it.

You have to pay attension to the options as you tab.

Hello Cuong,

If you are just finding a word and not replacing it then you can use shift
with F6 to move to the document pane, use Alt with delete key to get your
position, and then use F6 to move back to the navigation pane. Press
spacebar on the Find Next button, use shift key with F6 and read the
position with Alt and delete. You don't have to keep jumping between the
panes using shift with F6 to move to the document and F6 to move back to
the

navigation pane. Once you find an occurrence of what you are finding and
move to the document pane you can just use CTRL with page down to find the
next occurrence or CTRL with page up to find a previous occurrence and
check

position with the Alt and delete key.

If you are wanting to use replace option but not the replace all
choice

then you first use CTRL with H to move to the page of the dialog where you
can do replacements. It is a good idea to start at the top of the
document
first. After typing in what you want to find and what you want it
replaced
with you can use Alt with F to activate the Find Next button. Press
escape,

use Alt+Delete to get position, and then use CTRL with H again and use the
Alt+R to do the replacing. You can then use escape key, find position
using
alt with delete, use CTRL with H followed by Alt with R to replace it or
alt

with F to find the next occurrence.

In Word 2013 there doesn't seem to be a way to switch between the
navigation
pane and the document pane the say you can if just finding something.
Also,

in the dialog box the Alt+delete only gives pixel position for the control
in focus so you have to be in the navigation pane to get the position of
something using Alt key with delete key.

Take care.

Re: [JAWS-Users] question about Excel and JAWS

2015-07-01 Thread Michael Boyd
As far as I know, you can only read the title of the column or row that the
cursor is currently in, so if you are focused on D3, you can hear the titels
for column D and Row 3. To do this, press the key combination Insert +
Control + Alt +C for column titles, and Insert + Control + Alt + R for rows.
That's all there is to it. However, you must be focused on the first cell
that contains the column or row titles to set this up. For instance if your
column titles are in row 2, then focus on cell A2 and perform the key stroke
above to set excel to read the column titles as you arrow around the page.

For example, if I list peoples names in column a and put the scores they

[JAWS-Users] List Guidelines Reminder

2015-07-01 Thread Moderator
Hello and welcome to the JAWS Users list. This list has been created for The
purpose of discussing all aspects of the JAWS for Windows screen reader
Program.

So everything that pertains to JAWS is fair game. Such as asking about what
software packages work well with JAWS or how to make them work even better
with scripts, keyboard short cuts and so forth. Another example could be
requesting information on how to do something in Microsoft Word, which as we
all
know works very well with JAWS, but you need to know how to do a certain
task or want to learn a way to accomplish it more efficiently.

Now this is a very important point in my opinion, asking the list for exact
instructions every time is not a good thing to do for a major reason. It
creates
a dependency situation even if you don't realize it does. The ideal place I
am hoping the list will arrive at some day is that everybody no matter how
new they might happen to be with JAWS or computers will have the confidence
to try things on their own, and yet feel if they get stuck the list will be
there to help put them back on track. Trust me when I say that help is
quicker to arrive for somebody who is well known to ask for it last than
first.
So try it yourself first whatever it is. If you get stuck then let the list
know what you've done to try and resolve your current dilemma. Then I'm sure
help will arrive with in short order. Next a post asking if there is a
software package that does a specific task and works well with JAWS is
perfectly
fine.

The rules of conduct are quite simple and straightforward. Be polite and
Patient with others. There will be absolutely no fighting, and no bashing of
Freedom
Scientific on here at all. If you have a problem with them then take it up
with Freedom Scientific directly.

Please try to keep subject lines relevant and descriptive as possible. Also
any newsletters except those that directly pertain to JAWS should not be
posted
to the list prior to receiving moderator approval.

Attachments are removed before any message is sent to the list. This is done
for your protection. The message list might state that there is an
attachment
but in fact Mailman does remove them.

When contacting any of the list moderators privately please be descriptive
in the subject line as to the purpose of the message. Many of us simply
delete
messages from people we don't know. At the present time there are over 650
subscribers to this list, so we can't possibly know everybody on here.

Also, if you have a question for the list that falls within the guidelines,
then post it accordingly. Don't contact the management team with questions
that are more appropriate for the list itself. Your question may or may not
receive an answer for a number of reasons.

Everybody should familiarize themselves with the content contained in the
footer message that accompanies every message posted to the list.

Occasionally there might be some difficulty with your email address and you
may receive an email from the server asking you to reactivate your account.
Please do not simply delete this message. Instead open it and follow the
directions to reactivate your account. If you do not after receiving a
number
of such messages then the server will remove your email address
automatically.

The discussion of anything illegal is absolutely forbidden, along with
flirting or other such inappropriate activities. This is not a high tech
swap shop
or anything of that nature at all. This means that goods and or services
will not be bought or sold using this forum. If you know a given subject is
off
topic then don't post it. Simply placing off topic in the subject line does
not make it all right. Cross-posting is not permitted, and members should
only
post in the following manner:

Using the TO: field with only one list address. The reason for this is that
in cases where people setup their message rules to go by the to: field often
times such rules get fouled up and in effect do not work properly. Also
cross posting might allow you to reach many lists at the same time but the
fact
is such a post might not be on topic for each and every list. This practice
does nothing but clutter up such lists with
unwanted off topic messages along with annoying the list moderators.

The SUBJECT: field should be short and to the point without including any
member names.

Please do not reply to a posted question simply to say you don't know the
answer. All that does is create more traffic on an already very busy list
for
no reason at all.

Lastly please no jokes, virus warnings, recipes, safety tips, or pleas to
help dying kids, should ever be forwarded to the list.

Forwarded messages and attachments are not permitted. If you have an article
or message of interest which relates to the

Nature of this list send it to the list owner and if it is appropriate, it
will be posted to the list. Additionally if you want to make an announcement

2015-07-01 Thread Brian Lee
Hello Dacia,

I think that the easiest way to have JAWS read both the column and row
titles is to use the Excel naming manager.

1. Move focus to the first cell in the row that contains your column
headings.
2. Press CTRL with function key 3.
3. Press spacebar on the New button.
4. Type the word Title using a capital T and follow the word immediately by
a period. There should be no spacing used.
5. Immediately following the period type the cell address that starts the
range of cells you want to name. For example, if Name is in Column A of
row 4 then type A4.
6. Type two periods.
7. Type the cell address where naming will end. For example, you might
type Y5000.
8. Press enter key.
9. Tab twice to the Close button and use spacebar.

If I wanted to hear the row and column titles from A4 to Y5000 the name
would be: Title.A4..y5000

Notice there is no spacing in the name.

If you need to share your workbook with another person using Excel the
naming would be available for that person. This would not be the case when
using the JAWS method.

Take care.

Hi, what I am one thing, is for it to read the column and row titles as
headings.
For example, if I list peoples names in column a and put the scores they
earn in a game and columns BCDEFG and so on,. I wanted to read John Smith
300 points if I go to the third column and the third cell of that Collin. Is
there a keystroke to make the headings read like that? Or rather, to make

first. After typing in what you want to find and what you want it
replaced
with you can use Alt with F to activate the Find Next button. Press
escape,
use Alt+Delete to get position, and then use CTRL with H again and use
the

Alt+R to do the replacing. You can then use escape key, find position
using
alt with delete, use CTRL with H followed by Alt with R to replace it or
alt
with F to find the next occurrence.

In Word 2013 there doesn't seem to be a way to switch between the
navigation
pane and the document pane the say you can if just finding something.
Also,
in the dialog box the Alt+delete only gives pixel position for the
control

in focus so you have to be in the navigation pane to get the position of
something using Alt key with delete key.

Take care.

After you run it once, you can go back and change the words around to find

It is a good idea to start at the top of the
 document
first. After typing in what you want to find and what you want it

with you can use Alt with F to activate the Find Next button. Press

Hi Carolyn,

In Word the CTRL with page down or CTRL with page up is not just to move
page by page. If you use the Go To box for example to go to a bookmark,
once you go to the bookmark and press escape to dismiss the box the CTRL
page down goes to the next bookmark. If you do a find for a word (and
find
it) after pressing escape the CTRL page down goes to the next occurrence
of

the word. If you use the Go To box and go to a footnote, after pressing
escape to dismiss the box the CTRL with page down goes to the next
footnote.

If you want to use CTRL with page down to move down page by page after
using
those keystrokes to find something then use CTRL with G and in the Go To
box
type a P followed by the page number you want to go to and press enter
key.

Press escape and you should be on the page you specified. The CTRL with
page down or CTRL with page up keystrokes will then be used for moving
page

by page.

Take care.

7, arrow two times to title reading detection off
8, press the space bar
A, the first choice is read the column
B, read the row
C, read both
9, after you make your choice then press enter twice
Then it will go back to the work sheet

How do you make Excel 2013 read the names of columns when you're navigating

What I mean is say you're keeping score for a game and you want to navigate

Here is how I handle accessing a thumb drive. Frequently when you plug in a
thumb drive windows will ask you if you want to open the drive. In that
case, just press enter. However if you want to plug in a thumb drive and
windows doesn't ask you if you want to open it, then Open your computer
and look at the different devices on your computer. As you plug in the thumb
drive, watch which item changes. As I look at my computer devices and plug
in a drive, I will notice that it is the, F, device on my computer. Notice
it may not be in, F, on your computer, but besome other letter. On my wife's
computer I think it is letter, G. But whichever it is just arrow to it and
press return and you will be in. Now, on my computer, every time I plug in
a different thumb drive that drive will, for me, be drive, F. Note, once
again your drive letter may be different than mine.

Beware of many changes in this update.
the f6 key is just like pressing the tab key, it does not jump across
various controls like in itunes 12.1.
there is a new service called Apple music, some kind of a streaming service.
I will have to play with it more, once I got it started I could not stop it.
over all, every thing works, there are just extra edit fields between your
artist, albums, and music list.
extra check boxes across the top as well, like, for you, new, connect to,
are some of the new things.
Freedom Scientific needs to take a look when they can, and at least get the
f6 key working again.
So with a lot of tabbing around, itunes 12.2 does work very good with the
latest jaws 16 release.
happy music listening to all...

FYI. I downloaded the new iTunes but jaws 15 does not rread the list of
audiobooks. When I go to an author and tab to see the list of books jaws
will not read them. Even if I use left or right or up or down. I do not
know about jaws 16.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Opening a thumb drive in Wind7

2015-07-01 Thread LeDon

When, I'm in my computer menu and I arrow down,

The only thing that is read pertaining to a thumb drive is:

So, I been pressing the content menu and entering on O for Open.

Then, I get a insert disc dialog and I cancel out.

It's been like a 50 50 chance to open the thumb drive.

Can someone help me with a better way to open it.

I looked in the properties and didn't see anything really, besides being a

Thanks so much John, it worked very well, awesome.

Hi Patty.
1. Choose the information you want to use as a heading.
2. Highlight it by pressing SHIFT+END
3. Now press ALT+SHIFT+RIGHT ARROW
4. Use the left and right arrows to choose the heading level

Note: There are several heading levels. Each one creates the heading using
a different font.
Patty, you have to do this in Word 2010 or in another word processor.

 Hi Brian,
I know somewhat how the find replace works.

You can then use escape key, find position
 using
alt with delete, use CTRL with H followed by Alt with R to replace it or
 alt
with F to find the next occurrence.

 Take care.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Opening a thumb drive in Wind7

2015-07-01 Thread Michael B.
Hi Jorge,

After you open, Computer, try putting it into list view. Alt + V, press
the letter, L, or arrow down to List press enter. In, Sort By, press
enter on, Name. In, Group By, press enter on, None. This should make
reading items in, Computer, much easier.

Take care.

Subject: [JAWS-Users] Opening a thumb drive in Wind7

Hi,

When, I'm in my computer menu and I arrow down,

The only thing that is read pertaining to a thumb drive is:

Devices with removable storage expanded.

So, I been pressing the content menu and entering on O for Open.

Then, I get a insert disc dialog and I cancel out.

It's been like a 50 50 chance to open the thumb drive.

Can someone help me with a better way to open it.

I looked in the properties and didn't see anything really, besides being a
bit unsure?

Thanks,

Jorge

 Carolyn,
 It's called a flick up ,
A swipe is from left to right or versa only.

 To clear all:
Swipe to the left and double tap the edit button,
Then swipe to the left and locate the clear all button and DT double tap.

 Jorge.

Maybe my problem with Find or Find and Replace is closing the thing,
 since

 I
thought Escape was all that was needed. What does one do to close Find or
 Find and Replace? Thanks.

 Hi Brian,
I know somewhat how the find replace works.

If you are just finding a word and not replacing it then you can use
 shift
with F6 to move to the document pane, use Alt with delete key to get
 your
position, and then use F6 to move back to the navigation pane. Press
spacebar on the Find Next button, use shift key with F6 and read the
position with Alt and delete. You don't have to keep jumping between
 the
panes using shift with F6 to move to the document and F6 to move back to
 the
navigation pane. Once you find an occurrence of what you are finding
 and
move to the document pane you can just use CTRL with page down to find
 the
next occurrence or CTRL with page up to find a previous occurrence and
 check
position with the Alt and delete key.

You can then use escape key, find position
 using
alt with delete, use CTRL with H followed by Alt with R to replace it or
 alt
with F to find the next occurrence.

In Word 2013 there doesn't seem to be a way to switch between the
 navigation
pane and the document pane the say you can if just finding something.
 Also,
in the dialog box the Alt+delete only gives pixel position for the
 control
in focus so you have to be in the navigation pane to get the position of
 something using Alt
