Re: [JAWS-Users] WINDOWS 10, IS IT WORTH UPGRADING NOW?

2015-08-13 Thread Michael Boyd

John,

Here's my take on your questions, after having updated 2 of my computers to
Windows 10 in the past week. 1 of these computers was a Windows 7 machine,
and the other was an 8.1 machine.

1.We know that Jaws doesn't work with the Edge browser or with the
e-mail client at this time.

2. There is a solution since Internet Explorer is also an option with
Windows 10 and apparently, Windows Live Mail and Outlook do work with the
new operating system.

Answer for #s 1 2: You are right in what you are saying, but Internet
Explorer does work very well with Windows 10, and so does Windows Live Mail,
which I have used for years, and I have heard many saying that Outlook is
working well too, so this should not be a hold back from updating.

3. Is there enough of a difference between Windows 8.1 and Windows 10
to make the change worth the transition?

Answer: I say yes, there is a huge difference. First, if you have had the
opportunity to use both Windows 7 and 8.1, then you know the differences
there, and as well, you know what you liked and disliked about both of them,
this being said, imagine an operating system that takes the best from each,
and combines them into one major upgrade, then, Microsoft gives it to you
for free! What's not to like? Secondly, I have not found very much in
Windows 10 that just does not work. Everything that I have tried so far,
except for Edge and the Mail app have worked well, even Cortana workkes
well, and she always seems to give me the information that I ask for, or
perform the task that I ask her to.

.
4. Will Jaws be able to work with Edge and the e-mail client later on?
Answer: I say yes again. I believe that Microsoft and/or Freedom Scientific,
will do what ever it takes to make both of these applications work with JAWS
in the near future. It is true, that right now, they are both in an unusable
state, but this was mentioned up front, and the decisions to update have
still been in record breaking numbers. Mostly, I have heard only good
reviews of the program to this point, and yes, there have been some who have
experienced some problems trying to install the update, but many times, I
believe it has been because Microsoft's recommendations were not followed
during the process. I have installed the thing onto
2 of my computers so far, one of which I am about to give uto someone else
to use, and I am about to install Windows 10 onto my last computer, a Lenovo
desktop which I recently purchased. So far, I have not experienced any
problems with updating either of my computers, and the whole process takes
only about 2 hours to perform. I used narrator during both of my
installations to select the Typical installation option, and shortly
after, my computers rebooted and JAWS began speaking again. Nothing was lost
in the process, just as promised.

Having used Windows 10 for a little while now, I don't think that I would
want to go back to 7 or 8.1. Both are great operating systems, but both are
lacking in some areas that I believe are made up for in Windows 10. At any
rate, this is my opinion, and I believe it counts for something, if not to
anyone but me. I say to you, Update man, you won't regret it.

Re: [JAWS-Users] deleting windows.old folder

2015-08-13 Thread Michael Boyd

Kevin,

Are you saying that your Windows.old folder does not contain anything? If
not, that's strange, because it should have a lot of stuff in it. Should you
want to revert back to your old operating system, you will need this folder
and its contents to do so. Maybe the files and folders within it have
gotten hidden in some way?

is there a way using disc cleanup and jaws to remove the windows.old folder
after upgrading in place?
when I select cleanup system files, I check everything that is not 0 bytes.
I execute the cleanup, then after I restart I go back into the c drive and
the folder is still there!

Try your State Library or the BARD website for the books on the Office 2013

Another way of shutting down is to open the start menu by pressing the
Windows logo key, as always, then right arrow to the right column, then
arrow up to the Power button, and press the space bar, and the options to

 Or, is
it too early to load 10?

[JAWS-Users] Cortana was RE: WINDOWS 10, IS IT WORTH UPGRADING NOW?

2015-08-13 Thread Londa Peterson
Hi Mike,
You said that you've been using Cortana. Have you ever tried sending email?
I did, and she said I needed to set up an account. I have 3 email accounts
set up in Outlook on that computer. Does she only send email through the
mail app? To keep this JAWS related, I do notice that JAWS doesn't talk over
her too much. I'm one of those fortunate people who almost always has a
Braille display handy, so I just turn speech off if it's a problem. I want
to do more testing before I recommend her to clients.

Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] WINDOWS 10, IS IT WORTH UPGRADING NOW?

I say to you, Update man, you won't regret it.

have you managed to get rid of the windows.old folder
the techs say that folder eats up a lot of space!
it was said that using disc cleanup can get rid of that but when I used disc
cleanup it got rid of everything but the system32 folder so the windows.old
is still on the desktop!

what you do is select the desktop
with ctrl+m until you hear desktop then one of your icons unselected
then just press alt+F4 and you will get the shut down options
windows 10 doesn't have a shut down sound so when your screen is blank it's
powered off I believe.

Hieahow do I force a full shut down on my laptop, simply hitting altogether
fbled will just close what I'm doing, but not bringing the shut down dialog.
When I hit the power button in the start menu, it will just put it into
sleep. How do I force my laptop to shut down what I'm doing? I dont want
rforce it by holding the power button for 10 seconds, because it would force
the update to stop to. I'm using windows 10. My windows 7 and earlier

I will be happier with Outlook, if I can find out how to enlarge the

well as how to keep a sender's address.

I called the library to see if they had a book on Outlook 2013, but
not yet, and neither did American Printing House or National Braille

Of all the things I disliked, having no control of updates was at the
top of the list, closely followed by Edge, and also the lack of
decent accessibility options for low vision users.
I imagine JAWS will catch up win 10, but it already works just fine
with Win 7.

Hello Michael,

How about connecting your laptop via USB to an external keyboard for the
shift key down arrow selection of messages, if you are presently having

Honestly the only thing that is keeping me from upgrading this laptop that I

 I'm with you, Jason.

I will be happier with Outlook, if I can find out how to enlarge the
print size just a little and how to read a sender's e-mail address, as
well as how to keep a sender's address.

I called the library to see if they had a book on Outlook 2013, but
not yet, and neither did American Printing House or National Braille

2015-08-13 Thread Rose Combs
Well, I am still holding off for a while, I have no one here to assist if
something does go wrong, and if I ever find another job, 7 seems to be the
preferred operating system, last job made me install Acrobat 9 and IE 9
also, talk about being behind.

For now, Windows 7, Office 2010 and IE 11 work for my needs.
Maybe in the fall or winter I may find a compelling reason to upgrade.
If my late husband were here, I might have already endorsed the update.

Not taking chances on losing my computer, and since I bought it last year,
May 2014, not interested in buying a new one just yet. My Lenovo laptop
which I bought in February does not have the power to do much with so far as
I can tell, it was the one I was using for work and slower than molasses. I
have disks for Windows 8, had to use 7 so have not even considered putting
those on.

Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] WINDOWS 10, IS IT WORTH UPGRADING NOW?

I have four voices on my jaws 16, windows seven computer. I disagree that
the expressive voices are better. The voice that I use most is, Eloquence.
I have the Ava, Tom and Samantha expressive voices. I find that the
expressive voices miss pronounce many words that eloquence does not. Take
the following statement, which is a thread on this list . The title of the
thread is,
WINDOWS 10, Is IT WORTH UPGRADING NOW? Eloquence reads this correctly
While the expressive voices reads the word, it, as I T. So They say, Is,
I T , Worth upgrading now? I don't know what voice that you are using to
read this post so I don't know if I have explained it well enough for you to
understand what I am saying. I will only say that I like the sound of the
Ava voice better, But the Eloquence voice is more accurate and easier to
understand so I use it most of the time.-Original Message-

whereas the Vocalizer Direct (being older and all that) may be better

You hit Control Y, then C. If you want to start an e-mail, you go down to

in the To field. Then when you get the names or name in there, you tab and

Re: [JAWS-Users] Successful windows 10 upgrade

2015-08-13 Thread Pablo Morales
Well guys,
I update my 4th computer, and I need to say that now my opinion is very
different. I am working on another Lenovo i7, 8GB, and one hybrid disk. I don't
know for what reason, in this computer jaws and windows 10 are working very
good. In my 3 first computers, windows 10 was working fine, but jaws was
messing with me, so I downgrade to windows 8, and jaws stopped playing with me.
But again, in this Lenovo, windows 10 is working very good, and jaws is working
perfectly.
Thanks for all for your advices through the list. Without all your advices, I
would not be able to make it work.
Thanks for all
.

No, there is no speech on that window.
You will need help with only this screen, as far as I have experienced so far.
You can do an ALT+n, for the next button.
You will need help to choose express settings.
Then ALT+n, for the last next button.
Wait for your system to come up talking on the windows 10 desktop.
enjoy, I hope this helps...

Personally I don't see any difference in the latest iTunes update, it is
still clunky and so far as I can tell there is no way into the app store to
perform a search. I still have to press way too many tabs, and F6 for me
rotates between about three different things, none of which I generally want
  to see.
I use it mostly for backups and until 12 for searches. I still think it
could be improved with keystrokes to get you out of music and into what one
really wants to see, in my case, battery status when phone is plugged in,
ability to know if there are updates, info on last backup and ability to
perform them, and search like we had in 11 that went directly to the app
store and where we could type in a phrase and see reasonable results. In
other words, I want my side bar and my apps that show up in a list ... but
that is too much to ask, the keep making accessibility worse and more worse
  in my humble opinion.

Apple Music also is still as confusing as ever, especially the FOR YOU tab.
Makes absolutely no sense and it never seem to remain after you attempt to
select what you like or love and never deletes what you do not like.

Come on Apple, stop breaking things, or leave a help guide to explain

Re: [JAWS-Users] Vocalizer Voices: Expressive Direct

2015-08-13 Thread Flor Lynch
That's a problem with either the particular voice you're using or the
original message subject, I'd say. Also, do bear in mind that people don't
always type subject lines correctly, doing capitalization or misspelling
errors. It could be written as IT (both letters capitalized, and, obviously,
depending on it or IT that has a different meaning). The Expressive voice I
use is the Irish one, Moira.

Also, I was comparing the responsiveness of Vocalizer Expressive with that
of Vocalizer Direct, which is what the original question was asking about. I
remarked that the Vocalizer Expressive's responsiveness is, IMO, as good as
that of Eloquence. I did not comment on nor compare the pronunciation
aspects.

the expressive voices are better. The voice that I use most is, Eloquence.
I have the Ava, Tom and Samantha expressive voices. I find that the
expressive voices miss pronounce many words that eloquence does not. Take
the following statement, which is a thread on this list . The title of the

I've found the Vocalizer Expressive voices to be more responsive. My view is

that they are probably as good as Eloquence, at least the one I use, IMHO

whereas the Vocalizer Direct (being older and all that) may be better

recipient in the “To” field and then, after filling in multiple names in the
BCC field and pressing control+enter to send the email, it brings up the ,
“check names box”. Then, one by one, it says “no match can be found for any of
the names that I just put in. It goes on to say, “ check the contact list to
make sure that the information is correct and try again.
I have checked every single name and email address in my list and they are all
correct in their entirety.
What is more odd, is that if I only enter one name at a time in the BCC field,
it recognizes it fine and even repeats the name and email address!
Please, any suggestions or feedback would help a great deal.

Thanks
Marie J

[JAWS-Users] Successful windows 10 upgrade

2015-08-13 Thread jim
I just completed my third update to windows ten, this time on our w_8.1 laptop.
I used the Microsoft media tool.
I first reserved windows, this morning on our laptop.
I then ran the F S windows tool for preparing for windows 10.
Next I downloaded the media tool from Microsoft.
I went to my download folder, and ran the media tool.
I chose, update this computer, from the media tool.
I had speech all the way through until it was done and loaded the windows 10
system.
I tried narrator, but it would not see the next button at that time until
windows 10 had been totally installed.
I pressed the next button.
I Chose express settings.
I press the next button, and I waited until the desktop with windows 10 loaded.
this installation was super smooth.
I uninstalled and reinstalled Jaws, did the same with my Mcafee, all is good.
I then customized the system and checked for new updates.

an answer for another post about the windows.old folder.
I think we have to wait the 30 days before we can totally remove the
windows.old folder.
Microsoft wants to give everyone the chance to go back to their previous
version if they wish to go back after 30 days.
I’m tired now, time for more coffee...ahahahhahahah

Interesting, when it got to that window where it said express settings, how did
you get speech? I mean, I already updated, but just in case I upgrade my
daughters comp to windows 10 that would be helpful to know.

just tab one time to each of them.
the f-6 key is fixed as well.

No, there is no speech on that window.
You will need help with only this screen, as far as I have experienced so
far.

You can do an ALT+n, for the next button.
You will need help to choose express settings.
Then ALT+n, for the last next button.
Wait for your system to come up talking on the windows 10 desktop.
enjoy, I hope this helps...

Re: [JAWS-Users] Successful windows 10 upgrade

2015-08-13 Thread Daniel MacDonald
guys, upgrade through windows update and you'll get narrator as soon
as the windows 10 setup screen launches. I use bootcamp on my late
2012 iMac, intel core i5, 1 TB hard rive, 8 GB RAM. it worked fine.
restarted four times, and I got speech. not right away, their was
notable delay from when I pressed windows+enter, to when windows 10
setup was announced. waiting for official bootcamp drivers so my
volume controls work, other than that, when without a hitch; you can
get rid of the windows.old folder by doing a disk cleanup and
scrolling down to delete operating system files.. I'll keep it because
when I called the microsoft disability answer desk and asked about
windows 10 ultimate, they said it wasn't hurt yet, implying that it
will come out in the future. so, is the downgrade process just as
smooth and the upgrade process?

don't know for what reason, in this computer jaws and windows 10 are working
very good. In my 3 first computers, windows 10 was working fine, but jaws
was messing with me, so I downgrade to windows 8, and jaws stopped playing
with me. But again, in this Lenovo, windows 10 is working very good, and
 jaws is working perfectly.
Thanks for all for your advices through the list. Without all your advices,
I would not be able to make it work.

[JAWS-Users] reaching tabs on the site woodpeck.com

2015-08-13 Thread Gary Patterson
On this site, there are tabs (I assume at the top of the page) where you can
checkout for your order.

I spent over an hour last night trying to navigate to the checkout tab. I
don't know what I did to actually reach the checkout tab. I had tried F6 and
CTRL+Tab without success.

If anyone has a solution, I would be ever greatful for the tip. I suppose
that someway with scripts might be able to navigate to the tabs.

Carolyn,

Try your State Library or the BARD website for the books on the Office
2013 applications. I am willing to bet that they are available from one or
both of these places.

I'm with you, Jason.

I will be happier with Outlook, if I can find out how to enlarge the print
size just a little and how to read a sender's e-mail address, as well as
how

to keep a sender's address.

I called the library to see if they had a book on Outlook 2013, but not
yet,

and neither did American Printing House or National Braille Press.

I've spent a month with win 10, starting with a dev copy and then a
fully copy on my laptop, and I'm going back to, and staying with
windows 7.
Of all the things I disliked, having no control of updates was at the
top of the list, closely followed by Edge, and also the lack of decent
accessibility options for low vision users.
I imagine JAWS will catch up win 10, but it already works just fine
with Win 7.

2. There is a solution since Internet Explorer is also an
option with
Windows 10 and apparently, Windows Live Mail and Outlook do work with

3. Is there enough of a difference between Windows 8.1 and

4. Will Jaws be able to work with Edge and the e-mail client

UP till now, Microsoft has been very supportive where screen readers

Jaws?

Or, is
it too early to load 10?
