Hi.
You have to press enter on what you call the sub heading. The page won't
change until you do that.

I do not get anything like this. The first item in this list that you

experiences across all apps, turning this off will reset your ID". I see
nothing about "Getting to know me".

Hi group,
there is a setting under privacy, called, speech inking and typing.
When this is on, your computer sends all kinds of information to
Microsoft.

Such as info about you, and your contacts, your calendar, your search
history, and your preferences.
How to turn this setting off.
Windows key+I, right arrow to, privacy, press enter.
Down arrow to, Speech inking and typing, press enter.
Tab one time, if turned off, should say, Get to know me button.
Tab again, it will say, go to bing settings, you can go here to manage
how

bing works, and manage bing history.
Last week when I was demonstrating Cortana, this setting was
automatically

turned on, even though I previously had it turned off.
Just letting you know, of another setting which collects info about
you and

your computer.
This is the only thing that I wish Microsoft would change in w-10, this
constant collecting of one’s computer information.
Thank you and have a nice day...

Hi.
Smart navigation and navigation quick keys are two different things.

Smart navigation is a glorified version of the old screen layout web
document presentation mode.

If you browse a site that has links placed on a line along with other
text, such as a link in the middle of a paragraph, without smart
navigation it places the link on it's own line and interrupts the flow
of the text. Visually the link is just part of the text in a different
color that you can click on, but to jaws the link is on it's own line so
you can arrow down to it and press enter. With smart navigation however,
jaws tries to read the link among the text around it just as it is shown
visually. It's more than just that, but this was a quick stab at
explaining the point of smart navigation. The idea is to allow you to
continue having efficient access to the web while giving you a more
accurate representation of the layout of the document.

Navigation quick keys is what you thought yes, smart navigation is as
I've explained here, and not the same thing as navigation quick keys.

Amazing how JAWS use over the years creates habitual patterns of use
such as first letter navigation taht is officially called Navigation
Quick Keys. I must admit that I was a bit lost in the Smart Navfigation
discussion. The catch, of course, is that such things like tables must
be recognizable as such by JAWS.

2015-09-19 Thread Daniel
Hello,
You can activate smart navigation in two ways. Through settings center where
you press space to cycle through the options - off, controls, and controls
and tables. The second way is through the jaws startup wizard, where these
options are radio buttons. Smart navigation
Is used via the arrow keys. In controls, you can arrow across form fields
and you'll get the exact layout of the form. In tables, you navigate them
again with the arrow keys and you can pick a cell in a row, and arrow down
to the corresponding cell on subsequent lines.
Hope this helps,
Daniel

hi jim
thanks for the reminder.
but I'll be installing win10 directly from my sys tray since I already
downloaded it.

it's just sitting in my windows update waiting for me to start the process.
I will do it sometime on monday.
I did use the windows on my 2-in-1 netbook and it did work perfectly.
I do have the win utility tool on a flash drive for when I eventually
install win10 on my dell laptop sometime in the future.

I will save this info for future reference, though.
thanks again.

p.s. yes, I will uninstall both jaws versions and shared components.
unfortunately, I no longer have a key since I used my last one last week and
tech support probably will not give another, so I hope I don't lose my last
jaws license key.

I'll cross that bridge when I come to it, I suppose.
take care.

I hear ya on that banking and them boxes issue..
sometimes, it's a pop up getting you to explore other features your bank
offers, such as mobil banking.
Personally, I love mobil banking far better than through the web site.
Jaws 16 that I am still using, does very well on my bank site, it's my
bank's new layout that is hair pulling.
But using the mobil route, it's very quick and right where you want to be.

It once again reads the list of profiles in outlook 2007 correctly as I
arrow up and down to make my selection as to which email account I want to
check. This is a good thing that wasn't working in 16 for the last several
months. Strangely enough when I do a copy and paste it does not say the
  relative command.
One item I must point out as an improvement is for the first time since
the
ability to use the my extensions feature hit is that I was able to just
copy
and paste my scripts from 16 over to 17 without having to rebuild my
personal extensions file. Not a major deal for me as it is just some
copying
of text and doing a compile, but it is nice that I didn't have to do that
  this time around.

It seemed to work a little better on my banking web page last evening but
I
was pressed for time so more research in that area is required. They have
got a lot of strange things up there called modal boxes or something of
that
nature. I have no idea how to spell it either so that is a guess.

Respected friends, as you are well aware that I'm always very much
interested in new things specially a jaws or a jaws scripts.
So I have managed to install jaws 17 first public beta successfully.
In my windows 7 system I have jaws 16 and 17 first public beta both.
As far as my usage's result is concern,
  I have observed following.
Jaws 17 smart navigation is working very well.
I'm using it as ctrl and table enable.
I have checked different websites and found out that smart navigation is
  working nicely.
The matter of fact is that I didn't check it to all browser specially with
google chrome which is in my opinion with jaws 16 use not to be very much
  accessible.
One of the most surprising thing for me is that it is working very good in
  Doug's jaws script for Skype.
It is faster than jaws 16.0.4350.
Please let me know the result of google chrome if any of you are using it
with jaws 17 first public beta.

Smart navigation is a glorified version of the old screen layout web

jaws tries to read the link among the text around it just as it is shown

Hello George:
I have read the instructions from the link you provided. I pasted them into

 However, I have two questions:
1. Since we never know whether we will be trying to use the thumb drive on
a 32 or 64 bit computer, how does one know which one to download to the
thumb drive?
2. Secondly, it seems to me that a sighted person needs to be available,
when the thumb drive is plugged into the second computer. Otherwise, we
never know whether the auto run dialogue appears. Is that correct?

Good afternoon Jaws users group.
OK, here is what I have figured out so far with the Calculator app.
Using Jaws 17.
Just type Calculator into the windows start button, press enter on it.
Turn your numpad on, upper left key of your numpad.
Start typing any equation followed by the enter key on your numpad, this key is
on the bottom right corner.
Jaws 17, will speak, the equation followed by the answer.
Jaws 16, will not speak the equation or answer, it will just say equals.
Press, Control+h, for the history list box.
Just up and down arrow to hear the whole equation and answers, of all your
problems.
Tab one time to, clear history, press the spacebar, to clear all, after you are
done copying them.
How to copy calculator results.
Why you are in the history results list.
Turn on touch cursor, Shift+PC cursor.
Right or left arrow to the equation and answer you want to copy.
Press the left mouse click, the button to the right of the numpad on-off button.
Use Control+Shift+right arrow to select your whole equation.
Press Control+c, to copy your equation.
Press P C cursor, twice quickly, to go to your regular P C cursor.
Paste your equation into whatever application you with to put it in.
Here is my equation that I copied:
99 × 99 =‬9,801
So, my conclutions are that Jaws 17 works better with the Calculator app, then
does Jaws 16.

2015-09-19 Thread jim

Hi Howard,
Yes, I would reinstall Jaws 17 after upgrading to w-10.
Just in case you need some reminders of upgrading to windows 10.
*Upgrading to Windows 10 with jaws 16 or 17.
go to:
http://www.freedomscientific.com/Support/TechnicalSupport/Windows10Upgrade
Download the tool called utility tool, leave it in your download folder.
Download jaws 16.0.4350, leave it in your download folder for future use.
Download the Microsoft media creation tool at:
http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10
On this web page, Go to download link now 64 bit version or 32 bit version
depending on what system you have.

Download the tool and save it to your download folder for future use.
Leave all three of these downloads in your download folder.
Now, if you have not reserved windows 10, please do so.
press enter on the get windows 10 icon in the notification area.
go down the page and fill in your email address ext. this gives you a
verification email.

Now, restart your computer.
check for updates, install any updates, restart to make sure you have all
the latest updates.

Now you are ready to begin the upgrade to windows 10.
Run the jaws utility tool, this will get rid of any jaws fragmented files
and so on from your system.

Run the media creation tool.
yes, for your users account warning.
Choose, update this computer now and press enter.
you are now in an ongoing and updating dialog which says:
Windows 10 is being downloaded, continue using your computer.
This could take anywhere between 30 to 60 minutes, depending on your
download speed.
When it is done downloading, it will go through several screens itself
updating your computer and will get it ready for windows 10.
Next, there will be a screen asking you to except the license agreement,
check the yes and press enter on next.

Again, the program will run through several screens by itself.
Next, press enter on install.
now you will have no speech, this install takes 45 to 60 minutes to
complete.

After 1 hour, press the Windows key+enter key to turn on narrator.
Wait for a few minutes if it does not come on right away.
Almost done.
press the next button.
choose express settings.
press the next button.
if done right, in about 10 to 15 minutes, jaws will come on talking on the
desktop.

very important, uninstall jaws.
Keep shared settings and personal settings.
Reinstall jaws, no need for a restart here, jaws will come on talking with
all your settings, except for 2 of them.

Redo your shortcut key, control+ALT+j.
Redo the setting to have jaws come on at the log-on screen.
For whatever reason if the media tool fails the first time.
Check for updates, restart, and run the tool again.

continue having efficient access to the web while giving you a more
accurate representation of the layout of the document.

I changed the subject line to reflect your question concerning how much we
understand.
Doesn't look like the current smart navigation. Did not notice that
striking certain keys, such as H, would jump from heading to heading.
Looks like we have to do three keystrokes to get the same thing we now get
with one keystroke.
They are talking about doing the keystrokes twice quickly.
Where is the option to have it like it is in windows 7?

Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] JAWS Smart Navigation

Respected friend, here is the detail of smart navigation of jaws 17.
Read and let me know how much have you understood!
Smart Navigation, More Efficient Interaction with Complex Web Pages and
Applications Today and in the future, users will be faced with an increased
need to work with complex web forms, tables, and even applications that run
inside of a web browser. This will impact your day to day interactions with
services on-line such as banking and shopping, in addition to many web apps
found in both companies and government agencies. For instance, Internet
Explorer can be used to log onto a Microsoft SharePoint server to
collaborate with other co-workers and create and store documents. The new
Smart Navigation feature is designed to make it more efficient when
navigating web-based applications with the Virtual Cursor as the LEFT and
RIGHT ARROW or CTRL+LEFT and
CTRL+RIGHT ARROW commands move by control instead of character and word.
This makes navigation such as moving across toolbars, tab strips, and
navigation links more like navigating around a desktop application. Pressing
the Say Character, Say Word, or Say Line commands twice quickly changes to
the traditional navigation by character, word, line, sentence, and paragraph
so you can review the text of the control. Smart Navigation resumes when you
press ESC, or move to a different control by pressing UP or DOWN ARROW or
TAB.

For example, if you use the LEFT and RIGHT ARROW keys to move across a tab
strip, you might hear JAWS announce something like; "Home tab selected,"
"Insert tab," and "Page Layout tab." If you wanted to review the items on
the tab strip character by character, press the Say Character (NUM PAD 5),
Say Word (INSERT+NUM PAD 5), or Say Line (INSERT+UP ARROW) commands twice
quickly. You can now navigate by character or word until you press DOWN
ARROW to move away from the tab strip to another control.

Smart Navigation is off by default. To turn it on, do the following:

Press INSERT+F2, select Settings Center, and press ENTER.
Press CTRL+SHIFT+D to open the default settings file if you want to use
Smart Navigation in all web browsers, or open the Internet Explorer or
Firefox settings file.
Type "smart navigation" without the quotes into the Search edit box.
Press DOWN ARROW to move to Smart Navigation in the filtered results of the
Settings Center tree view.
Press the SPACEBAR to choose the Smart Navigation option you want to use.
Press TAB to move to the OK button and activate it with the SPACEBAR. The
changes are made and saved. Settings Center closes.
Alternatively, Smart Navigation can be enabled for all web browsers through
the Startup Wizard, or through Quick Settings (INSERT+V). For instance, you
may want to use Smart Navigation in Firefox, but not in Internet Explorer.

Smart Navigation offers two modes, Controls, and Controls and Tables.

When set to Controls, most web-based controls, including, but not limited
to, buttons, links, edit fields, list boxes, tree views, and headings, are
treated as single units when navigating by character or word. Performing a
Say Character, Say Word, and Say Line command twice quickly while focused on
a control will switch to character and word Navigation so you can use the
traditional navigation by character, word, line, sentence, and paragraph to
review a control, such as the text of a button or link, in greater detail.
Smart Navigation by controls automatically resumes when you press ESC, or
move to another control using TAB or UP or DOWN ARROW. If you encounter a
table, you will still use the table reading commands (CTRL+ALT+ARROW keys)
or the Table layer (INSERT+SPACEBAR, t) to navigate the table.

When set to Controls and Tables, navigation is the same as the Controls
option when not in a table. However, if focused inside of a table, the RIGHT
and LEFT ARROW keys move between columns while the UP and DOWN ARROW keys
move between rows. When focused in a cell and it contains any controls, such
as a heading, or an edit field, pressing the Say Character, Say Word, or Say
Line commands twice quickly will switch to control navigation, and
performing these commands again twice quickly will switch to character and
word navigation. If the cell does not contain controls, you can only switch
to

Re: [JAWS-Users] JAWS Smart Navigation

2015-09-19 Thread valiant8086

Re: [JAWS-Users] A Little Result Of Jaws 17 first public beta

2015-09-19 Thread David Ferrin
It once again reads the list of profiles in outlook 2007 correctly as I
arrow up and down to make my selection as to which email account I want to
check. This is a good thing that wasn't working in 16 for the last several
months. Strangely enough when I do a copy and paste it does not say the
relative command.
One item I must point out as an improvement is for the first time since the
ability to use the my extensions feature hit is that I was able to just copy
and paste my scripts from 16 over to 17 without having to rebuild my
personal extensions file. Not a major deal for me as it is just some copying
of text and doing a compile, but it is nice that I didn't have to do that
this time around.

It seemed to work a little better on my banking web page last evening but I
was pressed for time so more research in that area is required. They have
got a lot of strange things up there called modal boxes or something of that
nature. I have no idea how to spell it either so that is a guess.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Jaws 17 beta!

2015-09-19 Thread valiant8086

Hi.

My experience with jaws 17 have been such that I'm glad this is still a
public beta only. Try using 17 with a touch screen on a tablet computer,
my atom 1.8ghz quad core asus t100 is sluggish in quite a few places not
the least of which is skype for desktop. Try moving up and down your
contacts, if you're lucky JAWS will only be sluggish and keep talking
and focusing new items for several seconds after you take the finger off
the screen, but I've had plenty of jaws crash and restart, or jaws
shutdowns happen to me, the shutdowns are nasty because I have to
connect the keyboard dock long enough to use buttons to start jaws again.

While my t100 isn't exactly a speed demon, it does actually run pretty
good, and it did ok with jaws 16. I think this ought to be fixable given
that fact. I don't know if it has anything to do with extra code in use
to play the tick sounds when touching no man's land or what.

With the touch keyboard, if you put it in numbers mode and slide a
finger over to the number pad, you get extreme sluggishness or crash and
hopefully restarts of jaws. I duplicated this numerous times with my
asus t100 running windows 10 (see specs above) and my 3ghz core i7
hozwell lenovo yoga 2 pro with 8gb ram running windows 8.1.

Also, the touch keyboard is pretty dangerous on the t100 while trying to
type someone a skype chat, because if you accidentally touch above the
keyboard jaws will at least freeze temporarily, if not just crash and
again HOPEFULLY restart. I say hopefully there because it doesn't always
start up again, it just closes and you have to connect a keyboard or go
back into laptop mode long enough to press the buttons you need to start
jaws again.

The touch keyboard is a lot better, but the touch screen support right
now feels really gimmicky, 16 didn't have as many touch screen usability
features but it is far more responsive and stable.

My last issue is with smart navigation. If you have a page that uses a
list of links but they're all laid out horizontally on screen even
though they are indeed an html list, jaws insists on putting them in a
vertical layout. You can reproduce this on freedomscientific.com near
the top of the page with the navigation menu that contains items like
home, products, services, downloads, support, dealer locator and shop.
According to the jaws cursor (yes I really mean the jaws cursor), this
is a horizontal list, a bar of links that span the top of the website,
kind of looks like a menu bar. With the virtual pc cursor while you've
got smart navigation turned on, this appears to be a vertical list.

I have reported all of these concerns to fs via the 17 beta report form,
but as that form is crazily short on the edit boxes limiting the input
to too few characters to say all that I have to say, I wondered if there
was a chance I'd get Erick's or someone's attention on here, especially
if anyone else wants to confirm my findings, perhaps by duplicating my
problem reports via the beta report form at least.

I think the touch screen issues are likely fixable as jaws 16 is much
better. Oh also, is anyone else finding web browsing to be more sluggish
in internet explorer 11? Smart navigation is of course on, for elements
and tables.

sometimes, it's a pop up getting you to explore other features your bank

Personally, I love mobil banking far far better than through the web site.
Jaws 16 that I am still using, does very well on my bank site, it's my bank's
new layout that is hair pulling.
But using the mobil route, it's very quick and right where you want to be.

links, et cetra?

If not that, what is it? What does it do? And, how do you activate smart
navigation?

I sure hope they don't drop it. I use the Amazon research it several
times a week and never have a problem. It's convenient and fast for finding
an item. I may need to type in different wording to find different results
but I always find what I'm looking for.

Could someone explain the advantages of using the Amazon.com option in
Research It versus visiting Amazon.com directly? Using JAWS 16 with Windows
7, I have no trouble either navigating the Amazon.com site or making
purchases. And for those who find the regular Amazon.com site somewhat
cluttered or difficult to navigate, there is always the accessible version
which is optimized for screen readers. The trouble with Research It is that
when a web site is modified, Research It often no longer works well with
that site, if at all. Although the Research It feature was useful and
convenient when it was originally introduced, many users are now reporting
problems with it, and FS should considerdropping it from future releases of
JAWS.

2015-09-19 Thread DGH
The command is, insert spacebar followed by the letter R.
Type in the item you are looking for and then tab one time.
Type the letter A for Amazon and press enter.
This will bring up 5 search results for that product.
It gives you a short description and the price.
If you want more information about one of the results or you want to
purchase it, just press enter on the name and it takes you to Amazon so you
can purchase it or see the reviews on that item and also get more
information about it.
I just find it to be quick and easy. Almost too easy to spend money.

Re: [JAWS-Users] JAWS Smart Navigation

2015-09-19 Thread inamuddin khan
Respected friend, here is the detail of smart navigation of jaws 17.
Read and let me know how much have you understood!
Smart Navigation, More Efficient Interaction with Complex Web Pages and
Applications
Today and in the future, users will be faced with an increased need to work
with complex web forms, tables, and even applications that run inside of a
web browser. This will impact your day to day interactions with services
on-line such as banking and shopping, in addition to many web apps found in
both companies and government agencies. For instance, Internet Explorer can
be used to log onto a Microsoft SharePoint server to collaborate with other
co-workers and create and store documents. The new Smart Navigation feature
is designed to make it more efficient when navigating web-based applications
with the Virtual Cursor as the LEFT and RIGHT ARROW or CTRL+LEFT and
CTRL+RIGHT ARROW commands move by control instead of character and word.

If the cell does not contain controls, you can only switch
to character and word navigation. Pressing ESC or moving focus away from the
control or table cell will switch back to the prior navigation level, for
example, pressing ESC while in character and word navigation will return to
Smart Navigation in tables.

When Smart navigation is active, press ALT+DELETE or INSERT+TAB to have JAWS
announce the current Smart Navigation level.

Anytime you are using Smart Navigation, either set to Controls or Controls
and Tables, JAWS will work in Screen Layout. This presents pages in the
virtual buffer similar to how they appear visually on the screen. Toolbar
buttons or other lists of controls that are visually laid out horizontally
on the screen are displayed on one

The windows key x was also available in windows 8.1 btw, but I am not sure

where you can put the comp to sleep, restart, shut down etc.
