If you are using Windows 10, try tapping Windows + Up Arrow twice to make

Subject: [JAWS-Users] problem navigating in Word 2013

Hi.

I am running Jaws 17.0.1214 and Word 2013.

This problem seems to happen no matter which version of Jaws I am using.

If I use my arrow keys to read down or up line by line, many times, when I
reach a page boundary word jumps to the page following the one I want to get
too.

For example, if I am at the end of page 5, and press down arrow, word jumps
me to the top of page 7.

The only way I can get to page 6 is to use the control key with page up or
down.

Even if I use just the page up or page down keys by themselves, word skips
over a page.

I can't seem to determine if this is a Jaws issue, or if there is some
setting within word I must change.

Any help or advice great fully appreciated.

Re: [JAWS-Users] problem navigating in Word 2013

2015-11-29 Thread Mike B
Hi Vicky,

If you open Word 2013 using a shortcut icon, yes you can. Try the
following:
1. Let's say your Word icon is on the desktop & you also have a shortcut
keystroke assigned to it. Highlight the Word icon & press, Alt + Enter, to
open its properties.
2. Tab to the, Run dialogue, & arrow up / down to maximize.
3. Tab to, Apply, press the spacebar, tab to the, Okay button, press enter
to save & close.

Now whenever you press enter on this icon or, use the shortcut keystroke
assigned to this icon to open Word 2013, it will open in the maximized
state.
Take care.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Two questions

2015-11-29 Thread Mike B
Hi LeDon,

I only have an answer for question #1, actually 3 answers:
1. I have just updated to jaws seventeen and am using windows seven. . How
do I set punctuation to, none?
Answer #1:
1. If you are running Jaws from the system tray press, Insert + J, to open
the Jaws context menu.
2. Press the letter, H, to open, Help, or arrow down to Help & press enter
to open.
3. Press the letter, Z, to open the Startup Wizard, or arrow down to,
Startup Wizard& press enter.
4. Go through the Startup Wizard making your choices & following the
prompts.

Answer #2:
If you want your punctuation set for, None, in all applications try the
following:
1. Open the Settings Center in either of these 2 ways.
A. Press, Insert / Jaws Key + 6, on the number row above the main keyboard.
B. Press, Insert / Jaws Key + F2, to open the, Jaws Manager, arrow down, to
Settings Center, & press enter.
With the Settings Center open press, control, shift , + D, to open the
Settings Center Default All Applications.
2. Arrow down to, Punctuation, right arrow to open.
3. Arrow down to, Punctuation Level, press the spacebar until you hear Jaws
report, None.
4. Tab to the, Apply button, press the spacebar, tab to the, Okay button, &
press enter to save & close.

And the bonus answer #3 is:
While in any application press, Insert _+ V, to open Jaws quick settings,
arrow down to Punctuation, press the spacebar until you hear the level of
punctuation you want, tab to the Okay button & press enter to save / close
quick settings.
Take care.

Hi,
Thanks for the suggestion, however, I really haven't had much success
in the past with itunes. It seems to want to micromanage my library of

putting things into the directories of my choice. I know it does this
for music, but does it do it for podcasts too, or will it let me
manage and organize them to my liking?
Thanks,

From: Gerald Levy
I finally figured it out. As I mentioned previously, I could not get IE 11
to read a PDF document when ever I encountered a Google search result labled
as "PDF". When I clicked on the link, it would open on a blank page. But I
solved this problem by launching Adobe Reader, and bringing up the
Preferences dialog on the Edit menu. I scrolled down to Security (Enhanced)
on the list of options, tabbed once to the option labeled "Enable Enhanced
Security Mode at Start Up", which was checked by default, and unchecked it.
Now when I encounter a PDF document in IE 11 and activate the link to read
it, Adobe Reader processes and reads it. I remember this being discussed on
this list or elsewhere some time ago, but had forgotten about it. Hope this
helps others who are experiencing the same problem.

Hi Carolyn from Ron Kolesar and current Leader Dog Boz.
What I'd like to see in jaws especially for reading money is this.
Currently what is nice if you have a dollar amount it will read it as
example.
$55.
Example two.
If you also have something like
$3.25
It only reads as three point two five.
Instead of reading $23.25.
Example threee
I also would like to see the following.
For just something smaller than a full dollar.
We currently have to use the following format.
$0.25
And it read zero point two five.
I'd like to see twienty-five cents.
Wouldn't you?
It is something to think about.

Text settings is where to go to gew that. If you have problem, write again.
I'll go through it, then tell you, but I know it is in Text Settings, which
probably is in Configuration Manager. Otherwise, you might go into JAWS and
search for Text Settings. I don't know why, for the life of me, that speak
dollar after digits is not a default. I guess it makes sense to somebody,

Is anyone having problems with the dictionary?Hi to all, I am playing a
online truck driving game.
There are some abbreviations and some words that need to be placed in the
dictionary to sound better.
Just using the insert d command crashes JFW and you have to wait a good two
minutes before it will start up again.
Don’t even ask me about the default for the dictionary.
So I was curious to know if anyone else is having problems with the insert key
with win 10 and jfw 17?
Thanks.
Now it looks like the problem is with the dictionary when you go to the default
dictionary.

Below is a note I've saved that might help. This helped me in Word 2010:

Just thought I'd share this for those who want to try it.

The symptom. I've often found sluggish performance in Word when searching,
or when opening a second document. Jaws seems to either not be able to read
a screen without refreshing, or, in searching, it would sometimes take two
tries to get to the results. Just plain sluggish.

In going through settings, I came across an option to "Disable Hardware
Graphics Acceleration". I checked that and things seem to be much more
responsive now. I'll see how the day goes. But if anyone wants to do this,
go into Options, Advanced, and the item is in there. If you use the, Alt +
G keystroke, you'll get to it much quicker. From what I read on Google, if
you change it in one MS program, it should affect all of them. Hey, I don't
need graphics anyway. haha.
Hope this works.
Jean
Note From Mike B.: My settings wouldn't stick until I checked the, prompt to
update style, checkbox. To get to this checkbox the keystroke is, Alt + Y.

This is more likely something in your user verbosity settings or your web
browser settings, that has changed. You might want to compare between your
previous version of JAWS and JAWS 17 to figure out what's different.

Hi.
I have the same problem with my banking website.
I sometimes have to switch browsers, and sometimes I have to change screen
readers in the middle of what I am doing to click a button, or link.
I think the website is just poorly coded not taking accessibility into
account.

There is a lawyer in California that is an expert in getting many of these
sites to make their websites accessible.
She made Bank of America change their website to make it more accessible,
and she just made humana make their prescription labels accessible. She also
make CVS do the same thing.

I try routing cursors, turning off virtual cursor, left clicking, just about

Due to the configuration of some newer websites with maybe too many

I am running Jaws 17.0.1214 on a 64-bit 3.2MHZ windows 7
ultimate system with 12 GB of ram.

I am also running Word 2013.

When I am typing for a period of time in word, suddenly
without warning, Jaws will stop speaking. If I wait for
bout ten seconds, , jaws will say the last key pressed. If I
press another key, I have to wait another 10 seconds or so
before that key is echoed.

Eventually all the keys pressed will show up in my document.

I am just wondering if this might be a jaws problem, or if
there might be a setting within word that might have to be
changed, possibly something to do with recovery?

Also, if I attempt to save a large document first as a doc,
and then as a text file, Jaws will crash and sometimes
restart. Even after it restarts, sometimes Jaws will not
respond and I must use narrator to finish saving my text
file within word.

This seems to happen with Jaws 17 and 16.

Any clues would be great fully appreciated.

How exactly do you find "Disable Hardware Graphics Acceleration" in Word
2013? I checked the menus and I also tried alt g, but I can't find that
setting.

Hi Al,

Below is a note I've saved that might help. This helped me in Word 2010:

From: Jean Menzies via Jfw

Turn off Hardware Graphics Acceleration in Office 2013

Microsoft Office 2013 is great software for Windows 8 and I am guessing that
quite a few of you may be using it on your system. This productivity suite
contains many technologies in-built inside it and sometimes due to them an
average computer has to suffer. If your facing this issues like crashing of
Office components or not running properly and freezing every now and then or
if they only works in Safe Mode of Office, then technology named Hardware
Graphics Acceleration may be the culprit behind this.

Turn off Hardware Graphics Acceleration in Office 2013

I found that many users having issues with working of Office 2013 on your
system are often advised to disable hardware graphics acceleration. Almost
in all of the cases, disabling the hardware acceleration for graphics does
the trick and solves issues for many. In this article, I'll show you how to
disable hardware acceleration of graphics using the UI and of course, using
my favorite Registry Editor.

Turn off Hardware Graphics Acceleration in Office 2013

Using UI

1. Open any Office 2013 component for example Word, and create a blank
document, click FILE.

Re: [JAWS-Users] on some websites I can't activate buttons

2015-11-29 Thread Philip Hall

Subject: [JAWS-Users] on some websites I can't activate buttons

On some websites I run across buttons I can't click on with space or enter.
I try routing cursors, turning off virtual cursor, left clicking, just about
everything I can think of but the keystroke won't work to get me to the next
page. I see it a lot on banking sites and on submit or continue buttons.
Due to the configuration of some newer websites with maybe too many
graphics--just making a guess--is there just no way to be able to use
buttons and therefore the inability to complete tasks on these sites without
sighted help? I truly hope there's an answer and that it's not impossible
to use these sites independently.

Thanks.

I'd also like it because I'd like to email them direct about the drag and
drop issue. If the method used is unpredictable and nothing has been done
about it, I'd like to get FS'S reasons why. As someone else on the list very
rightly pointed out, not every task can be achieved by cutting and pasting.
I have not been able to move my shortcuts around on the desktop by cutting
and pasting, and I know there are a couple of other instances where dragging
and dropping was the only way around and I didn't have the knowledge at the
time to do it myself.

Cheers!

Re: [JAWS-Users] Upgraded to 17, now all stored emails are gone

2015-11-29 Thread Dave Carlson
Kurt,

This is more likely something in your user verbosity settings or your web
browser settings, that has changed. You might want to compare between your
previous version of JAWS and JAWS 17 to figure out what's different.

I am using gmail attached to Outlook. I did notice that the very last person
that I emailed is showing up if I press the tab key but the list of people
are not there if I use first letter navigation and then the down arrow to
get to the particular one that I am looking for, the way it used to be.

the messages should still be in your web server whatever web emailer you use
like yahoo, gmail etc.
if you are using outlook from any version of ms office it's just a desktop
email client.

Hi list,

I just upgraded to 17 and all the emails that Outlook saves in the
background are gone. Is there any way of getting these back or am I just
going to have to find them all out again? Why would upgrading mess with this
stuff, Outlook is not a JAWS product. My spelling suggestions in my spell
check are not spelling them out or giving me all the options that were there
before.

Thanks for any help.
