I received the following off list. Perhaps someone who is using version 11
can confirm this?

Yes,
I found out it will work with a screen reader and it if fairly accessible.
You just have to turn off the gamer mode.

There is also outlook.com where you can get an email account. I don't think
that is what he is looking for, hover. I think that he was looking for a
free email client that he could run from his computer.

Hi,

I think what he is asking is if there are any free email services other than
gmail and yahoo. I believe there is something called gmx, but have not used
it in a while. There is also something called poste.de, but have not looked
at it so don’’t really know. Doing a search for free email services should
do the trick though and if I come acrosst any myself I will be sure to pass
them on.. Thanks.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Editor Toolbars

2018-01-11 Thread Fuzzmom
What seems to be happening is while I'm typing suddenly
The icons just show up and of course then I can't continue typing. I'm not
sure what program or code my forum uses. Almost like the icons are
scrolling?? Hard to describe. I use a braille display. I have refresh turned
off. I also have forms mode set to manual, both of which seem to have
helped, but not with this particular issue. Some forums have a checkbox to
disable these things, and I do. Others don't seem to have that checkbox.
Sorry just confused.

Hi Melanie,
Sure. Unfortunately, my braille printer is not functioning at this time, but
I can certainly take notes and present whatever. And if you want to talk
about it and make whatever special emphasis points you want to, that would
be great. It looks a lot like last years it seems to me. Not a lot of
change, except for our not being entirely sure about housing initiative
stuff, and the lack of a crop walk. That was a surprise. If you would like
to talk, what time works well for you?

Hi All,

I learned about this update from another list, & it's all explained below.

Reading issues have been reported when using JAWS 2018.1712.10 (released in
December 2017) with Windows 10 Universal apps. Here are some examples:

list of 2 items
1. In Windows Mail, JAWS 2018 will not speak the body of an email while
navigating by character or word. And JAWS may read a previously opened
email instead of the current one.
2. In Sticky Notes, JAWS 2018 repeats the character in focus and will not
speak the text while navigating by character or word.
list end

Solution

These problems have been fixed and will be included in the next JAWS 2018
update. But if you need these fixes before the public release, you have 2
options for receiving a pre-release update as follows:

list of 2 items
A. Download the full version update from the appropriate link below. It is
OK to install over the existing version, or it can be done as a new install
by itself.

will the new update fix that? Also, I have the home use edition, the low
priced one. Is there a limit to how many jws updates you can get? They just
released this early Nov and I'm surprised thy have a new update already.
Thanks for the info.

It is
OK to install over the existing version, or it can be done as a new install
by itself.

[JAWS-Users] Editor Toolbars

2018-01-11 Thread Fuzzmom
Is there a way to diaable something called an editor toolbar? Smilies,
icons, align, allsorts of stuff I don't need for simple text posting. Mostly
found in forums. I've clicked all the things that say disable, when they're
available, but that isn't working. Do these conflict with Jaws or am I just
missing something? Thanks.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Two problems with JAWS 2018

2018-01-11 Thread JM Casey
I noticed the first behaviour in JAWS 18 as well. It doesn't seem
consistent, though. In fact, I can't remember the last time that happened.
Then again, this could also have to do with the fact that I use firefox; I
think it was largely at work that I noticed this issue, and they still used
iE. I know I've noted it a bit on this machine, though, too. I don't know
what causes it or why it only happens sometimes.

By "no menus"...you mean the ribbons? I'm using Word 2010 as well, but JAWS
18; can't say I've ever had this happen. It almost sounds like something in
Word itself might have been changed?

Tab to, Edit scheme, & press the spacebar.
control+tab to html tab.
tab and down arrow to on click speak.

Agree. The very few times where there's an element that can be clicked
through for me at least doesn't warrant this feature to be enabled. Besides,
you can more or less tell if and when you can click on something to bring up

Hey Cristobal.

Yes, I know I can disable it, but having JAWS detect these elements is
potentially useful. It just seems like it's doing it wrong, and I'd like to
know why that is. I know I'm not the only one; does everyone else just turn

Disable the detect elements setting in your Jaws settings. Going off of

I know this topic came up here some time ago, but I'm afraid it wasn't
relevant to me at the time and wasn't a thread I took the time to read. So,
sorry for bringing it up again.

But yes, I was just wondering about this. I understand that there often *is*
"clickable" text on a webpage, and JAWS is trying to inform me of this fact.
But on many pages, every line will say "clickable", even though there is
nothing to click/nothing happens when you click. Why is this? And can I get
a happy medium somewhere? Obviously I don't want to miss important
information about a page, but when I'm reading a wikipedia article or IMDB
review or something and hear "clickable, clickable, clickable", on what
appears to be static text - that just seems like weird, excessive noise.

It is in your settings centre.

Once in there, go to Speech and Sounds Schemes, pressing right arrow to open
it.

Arrow down to modify schemes... and press the spacebar.

In the resulting dialog box, tab to the edit sound scheme button and press
the spacebar.

In the resulting dialog box, control+tab to the HTML tab and it'll be the
fourteenth item in the list, and it's labelled as "onclick" and should be
spoken as "clickable".

I have changed it to say simply click instead of the clickable so it doesn't
interfere with my webpage reading very much.

I've also changed the "on mouse over" links to just say mouse instead of the
mouse over.

Yes Jim, they sure do.

Well, this has been a thing since at least 2016. I found the archived thread
about this, probably from this list.

I have turned off the "indicate element attributes" checkbox and this has
done the trick. But this isn't an entirely satisfying solution, since now
I'll be missing some potentially useful information as well. The little help
message informs me that you can turn on and off individual attribute
announcements using speech and sound schemes. This I know. However,
"clickable" is simply not to be found anywhere in that list. So if they
could just add it to the schemes page -- then we could turn it on and off at
will. Seems very uncomplicated to me ... or am I missing something?

I recall a response from FS that the "clickable" ghost issue is a known item
and they're working on a fix. I've no further information, though. When I
switched to Firefox as my default browser about 6 months ago when IE
insisted on opening pdf's in the browser, the everpresent clickable sound
was a real nuisance. Now it's just a nuisance. Humans have a wonderful
talent for drowning out useless noise so long as it does not tweak the
emotions.

It works, sure. However, you may not get a lot of feedback, depending on how
the remote person is operating. If they are sighted and moving the mouse
around and using keyboard shortcuts the way most service desk types do,
probably don't expect JAWS to say much. But yes, team viewer itself has an
extremely minimal, streamlined interface that is perfectly accessible.

Well, it seems I was premature; it is not actually working (in the sense
that it's not solving captchas) on my Firefox 52 ESR. Oh well.

I'll get on board with FF 58. I used 57 with NVDA and it worked ok. All
reports say 58 will be better.

It is
OK to install over the existing version, or it can be done as a new install
by itself.

After opening the "empty" pdf, hit JAWSKey+spacebar followed by "od"

This invokes the OCR document scan. It will take a bit of time for the

The result is then displayed in the virtual viewer.

Thanks, Mike. This release fixed the problem I was having reading email
messages in Outlook 2010, so it did more than advertised.

And JAWS may read a previously opened email
instead of the current one.
2. In Sticky Notes, JAWS 2018 repeats the character in focus and will not speak
the text while navigating by character or word.
list end

2018-01-11 Thread Mitch
Hi Mike, Thanks as always for your extra effort in informing the list of
updates, etc.
I had the Windows 10 Mail problem of reading prior messages and previously
reported it to VFO as did many others.
While this update fixed the reading problem, another issue that I previously
reported still exists and I again reported it to tech support this morning.
In my case and maybe others as well, certain emails – like every one from
KimKomando.com – cause the mail program to close and unload. I hope this can
be addressed prior to the next update, whenever it is released.
All just FWIW, Mitch

Re: [JAWS-Users] online outlook client

2018-01-11 Thread Debby
Hi Kevin,

It's been awhile since I used that, but if you haven't already you need to use
the "light" version of the interface. The last I knew the full feature version
did not play well with JAWS.

using jaws 2018 I’m having trouble opening my email messages from
www.office.com I would assume when you arrow to a message icon I would just
need to press enter on the message icon to open and I would beable to read the
message line by line with the arrow keys. but for some reason when I press
enter on an icon the message doesn’t open. but when I select a message jaws
will read it. I prefer to read an email line by line that way I can take my
time when jaws is reading me the message. is this a bug in 2018 or is there
some special way to open the message?
Email is golden!!!
