[JAWS-Users] Magic 14
Someone on this list answered a previous Magic question so I have another one. I'm using Magic at 22X and I have light letters on a dark background. Win 7 64 bit computer Jaws 18 IE 11. So, I turned off the magnification with the cap loc key and delete so that a sighted person could see what was on the screen. When I used these toggle keys to turn the magnification back on, Jaws said, "Magnification enhanced" and the colors changed to the ones that are set, the light letters on the dark background. But the magnification wasn't on. I had to reboot the computer to get the magnification back. Has anyone else encountered this? Is there an easier fix than turning the computer off and on again? Re: [JAWS-Users] Accessible free anti virus
I've been following advice from various sources and using Windows Defender, with the free edition of Malware Bytes installed to perform occasional scans. I also keep the operating system and applications up to date. Running out of date software is a very effective way to become vulnerable to malware. So far, neither tool has detected anything. I don't know whether that's because I've managed to avoid malware, or because the malware is avoiding detection. I hope it's the former. -Original Message- From: JAWS-Users-List [mailto:jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of Dennis Long Sent: Friday, February 9, 2018 7:48 PM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] Accessible free anti virus I find defender annoying - Original Message - From: "JM Casey" To: Sent: Friday, February 9, 2018 3:23 PM Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] Accessible free anti virus > Windows Defender for anti-virus. Miriam, This sounds like a very strange problem which I cannot recall ever encountering before. Good luck and if you discover the solution to your problem, please let us know. Jeff On 2/9/2018 6:42 AM, Miriam Vieni wrote: Jeff, The Humanware Companion software always works the same way. There's never been a problem, ever since Humanware developed this piece of software. It works with zip folders from NLS and Bookshare. Windows Defender for anti-virus. Free version of MalwareBytes for anti-malware. Defender is already built into your Windows 10 and probably good enough for your purposes. It's less annoying than free AV out nowadays, which is always full of ads and hardly ever great from an accessibility standpoint. And it does detect a lot of stuff. Arguably, too much. But you can exclude areas of your drive if you are getting false positives. -Original Message- From: JAWS-Users-List [mailto:jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of Geovanni bahena Sent: February 9, 2018 8:47 AM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: [JAWS-Users] Accessible free anti virus Hey everyone, Subject line says it all. Re: [JAWS-Users] My wayward Books Folder
Thanks. But the point of having the books folder is to use the companion software. Otherwise, I can just unzip the book in downloads, where it arrives and transfer it. The reason for using the companion software is that one can unzip and transfer several books at one time and it's somewhat easier than unzipping the book with windows. Re: [JAWS-Users] JAWS & Microsoft Silverlight Updates
Hi Fernando, I've never had a need for Silverlight, & it has never been installed on this computer, but I only started receiving updates after reinstalling MSSE. I made sure that Silverlight wasn't installed by searching the registry, IE, & Firefox, but then after looking in Windows updates / change settings, I noticed this checkbox was added with the MSSE reinstall, & was checked / turned on, Give me updates for Microsoft products and check for new optional Microsoft software when I update I'm pretty certain this option is the reason for the Silverlight updates, but I don't want to turn this off because then I won't get updates for other MS products I have installed. So, hiding the silverlight updates is what I'll do! LOL Thanks much. Take care. Mike. Sent from my iBarstool. Arguing with a woman is like reading a software license agreement. Thanks to everyone who replied. I Found a way to disable the popup asking what I have plugged in, you can go in to MSConfig and disable the Realtek stuff from the startup. Re: [JAWS-Users] My wayward Books Folder
Jeff, The Humanware Companion software always works the same way. It finds the zip folder that contains the files for the book in my books folder. It unzips the zip folder, puts all the files in a folder, and then transfers this folder onto the SD card for the VR Stream or the cartridge for the NLS player. There's never been a problem, ever since Humanware developed this piece of software. It works with zip folders from NLS and Bookshare. The software is set to find the zip folders in my books folder which I've always had, ever since I began downloading books in 2007. Re: [JAWS-Users] Turning on and off the screen shade
Hello, The most effective means I have found for confirming whether the screen shade is on or off is to go into the quick settings menu with an insert plus v or capslock plus v if you are using the laptop layout and in the search field type shade. Next, down arrow once and JAWS should state whether it is checked or not if it is pressing the space bar on it to uncheck it and then tabbing to the ok button should disable it. Hope this helps On 2/9/18, Sharon S wrote: > Hi all, I am running windows 10, Jaws 2018 on an Acer laptop. JAWS 17 will read the title bar and other extraneous material of the documents window but will not read the general text typed up inside the document or spreadsheets themselves. Re: [JAWS-Users] JAWS 2018 and Windows 7 was RE: JAWS is not speaking control descriptions
Wayne, I assume that new versions of JAWS keep up with developments on the Web that don't help sell a software product. That said, JAWS 2018 doesn't work with certain messages in Outlook 2010 and fails to keep its place on certain (though not all) Webpages. I've brought these two problems to the attention of VFO by email, but they insist I call to seek solutions, even though others have reported similar experiences on this list. I don't want to spend the time nor risk getting one of VFO's less skilled tech service people, all for what I believe would be a fool's errand. You seem to be asking if it's worth keeping up with the biennial SMA. If you can afford it, the answer is surely yes. Whether for 2018 or some other future version, VFO's pricing system makes SMA's cheaper than buying JAWS all over again. Also, although I've never come across VFO claims of security, it could be another reason to keep up to date, as it is for all software. -Original Message- From: JAWS-Users-List [mailto:jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of wayne smith Sent: Thursday, February 08, 2018 10:30 AM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: [JAWS-Users] JAWS 2018 and Windows 7 was RE: JAWS is not speaking control descriptions Adrian, I see that you are using Windows 7 64bit as I am. However, I tried the Menus and Controls options but the issue is not fixed. It is expected that this setting doesn't fix this issue. This is because tutor messages handles speaking of hints given by JAWS on how to operate the focused control type with the keyboard; for example, when you are on a button and have Tutor Messages to Menus and Controls, JAWS will say using the Tutor Message voice: “To activate press space bar.” These are JAWS-specific messages. Control descriptions are small help texts, often just under the control name, which gives information on what a specific control does and it's displayed on the screen. For example, when you are in the Driver Update wizard for a device in Device Manager, the Search Driver Software on your Computer button have a description telling “Search and install the driver software manually,” and the button for check automatically tells something longer about the searching on the computer and Windows Update unless you disabled this in the device installation settings.
