I am considering doing an update to my tutorial on installing jaws scripts
using the roaming shortcut.

Also depending on what other recordings others have done as I don't believe
in inventing the wheel since that has already been done I will need to
review what I can do that needs to be done. I have recently obtained a
system for testing purposes which has been upgraded to windows 10 myself. I
am still learning what programs will or will not work on that platform. I
can say this for a fact. Gold Wave seems to work wonderfully. Now I need to
find out how well it works with my USB headset which is my recording media
of choice.

If all goes well some of this might start next week or so.

Re: [JAWS-Users] find a text string

2015-09-10 Thread Ann Medlar
Hi Lenny,
I am using Windows 10 and J16.

Unsure if this might work but use.
JawsKey+Control+f and type your desired search string.
Then press F3 key above the number row to find more search hits.
It seems that shift F3 does not undo your desired search string
press JawsKey+Control+f again and type a different search arguement. Press F3
key to search through site. Just experimenting.
I opened Freedom Scientific site and tested it using search arguments download
then window and it found it. Keep pressing F3 key and you might find what you
are looking for.
I hope it works.

Is there any way to locate a specific text stringin a large folder of

For my web page I have a main folder with several sub folders. Each of these
sub folders have a fairly long list of files.
In one of these files is a link to my old email address. I thought I had
everything changed until last evening. I received a request sent to my old

where the unchanged link resides.

Ann,
It should work the same way. The FN key sends a signal to the HP processor,
telling it to perform different functions when that key is pressed.

Jawes doesn't recognize or speak this key because, as noted in previous
messages, it has no recognizable function. However, when used with the
function keys, it will allow the user to activate certain original
functionality. It acts like a Shift key.

In a standard HP laptop, the key is pressed in combination with the
function keys. When that happens, Jaws will announce the function such as
Refresh, Windows Active List, System Tray, etc.

Without that FN key, those keys are programmed to activate other Windows
based functions. When that happens, Jaws may or may not react to the change
initiated. Certainly, if a key is pressed and new information appears on
the screen, Jaws will respond as normal by attempting to speak parts of the
new data displayed.

[JAWS-Users] Keyboard on new Windows HP Desktop

2015-09-07 Thread Ann Medlar
Hi all,

I have a new HP desktop with Windows 10, Jaws 16 and of course a new
keyboard.

On keyboard from left of spacebar is alt, Windows key labeled with Windows
logo and control.

However, from right of spacebar is alt, FN key, application key labeled with
three bars and then control.

I wish to append to clipboard and I press Fn key+JawsKey+c and Jaws states

Not available outside of tables or in spell checker in find / replace dialog
windows.

In keyboard help mode FN key is not defined and not defined when combined
with letters c or v or x .

When I press FN or function nothing seems to happen. I would love to
reassign this key to make it a windows key. Any way to do this?

Thanks,

Ann,

The Fn key is computer (laptop) specific, and has nothing to do with JAWS.
It's a modifier key that many laptop makers use to assign extra
functionalities that they think are important for their users. Neither does
it have anything to do with Windows per se.

Somebody who has an HP computer (like yours) may wish to take it further;
but, unless there's a specific facility in the HP settings to mute or switch
off the Fn key, you'd have to go into the BIOS to do it. (Not possible
without expert knowledge and/or sighted assistance.)

Hi,
When using Windows 10, Outlook 13 saving attachments is a bit diffirent.
Highlight the message but don't open it.
Press alt+f for file and down arrow to save attachments and enter.
Enter on okay
Then you have dialog to save it.
I wanted to save it to my external drive so I needed to shift tab to

right arrow to open. Then my documents is closed and arrow to open.

Hi,

Go to Control Panel, either from your desktop or by pressing Windows X and
arrowing up or down to find it, and press enter to open it. Press the letter
D until you find Default programs. Press enter to open this. Tab down to
"Set Your Default Programs". Press enter here. Once open and loaded, tab
one time to the list view, and then arrow down to focus on Internet
Explorer. Stop on this and tab down and press enter on "Set this program as
default. You will then be prompted to set defaults for the program, which
you can choose to do, or you can simply use it in it's default state, which
I believe most people do. hth.

Hi all,
Using windows 10 Jaws 16 latest version.
Anyone know how to make IE default rather than Edge?
Edge I believe is inaccessible. When I press alt key I get no menu options.
Am I correct?
I went into IE Tools options program page enter on make IE default then
okay.
I pinned IE to start and task bars.
I have a call into MS accessibility help.
I called FS on another issue and was told to call MS because it is a windows
issue not a speech issue...
On and on.
Slogging through and now have outlook excel and word on desktop.

Thanks, your method easier than Microsoft.
Had to change to small icons.

They said control panel, default program, set programs as default, tab to
list of programs arrow down to IE tab to default.
I'll save your method.
I need to set up another PC next month. Hope to keep good notes.

Press windows key+I, for settings.
Press enter on system.
arrow down to default apps, press enter.
Tab 7 times, across and make your changes to various default programs.
You will want to use insert+tab, to repeat some controls...

Hi all,

I have turned flash off and went to visit a web page of a web designer who
may work on a page for our business. I wanted to investigate his work,
because he warned me he tends to use flash for obvious visual reasons.
Jaws will not read anything for me when I visit the link, and is very
sluggish.

If anyone is up for trying out the link, and helping me to figure out if
Jaws will work with this guy's design, I would appreciate it. The link is:

http://www.keepsakemedia.net

Also, since I'm a windows user, I've never paid attention to if Jaws works
with Macs, so does it?

Thanks,
