Re: [JAWS-Users] Laptop or desk top?

2009-11-21 Thread ChB
I have a desktop pc, a laptop and a netbook. I like them all and each is
great for what occasions I use them for.
So, if you ask 100 people you will probably get as many different answers,
because it depends so much on where and how you mostly use your computer, if
you plan to take it places and so far.

I started on desktop computers in 1987 and a couple of years ago

love it also. The HP laptop does have more features though.

Make sure you are in the very first 'if' line, then make sure you go to the
end of that line before you hit enter hit enter once. This will create a
space between that line and the next one. The StartupGreeting () needs to
be pasted into that. If you have done this as well as all previous stuff
right it should compile directly.

11. Then paste the following text on that blank line
StartupGreeting ().
I pasted that text, without the () but when pressing CTRL S to save I get

Worked like a charm, no problems, installed all drivers itself with the

Everything works out of the box.
I am running jaws 10 latest build and all worked fine there too, it
automatically adjusted itself with the graphics drivers and said it is
 now
in windows 7 basic. So far no problems with jaws 10 reading everything,
 navigating works very well.
Very impressed so far. Have two more systems to install now, lol

I had help putting in the license and stuff it asks, right at the beginning.
Then I just let it run its course. Then I got the jaws cd and just popped it
in and went from there. I don't know if one can do this totally unassisted,
I just always get it done with the initial launch of the installs, when
someone is available to help with the numbers and stuff. There is a thing
called unattended installs or at least used to be for xp, have never tried
this though. This is what companies also use, when they have a lot of
computers to install the same systems on, so they do not have to watch them
all while installing is in progress.
As far as clean installing, main thing is to make sure you have all your
files saved before wiping the drives clean. And then have all drivers handy
you may need. With win 7 I did not even need my additional windows 7
drivers, I had already downloaded prior.

How much slower depends to a great part on the machine you

I think it would be more correct to say that Microsoft
took
 too long to
develop Vista, released it too soon, and made many PR
 mistakes rolling it
out. Vista works well now, and much more secure than XP.
 For me, it's main
remaining problem is that it requires too much resources.
 It seems that
Microsoft has learned from their Vista mistakes. Windows
is
 a streamlined
version of Vista and needs less memory CPU and hard disk!

The only free upgrade from Vista to Windows 7 is if you
 purchased a computer
within the last few months. I have not heard of any other
 free upgrades,
and doubt if they would do that. There was a pre-order
 upgrade for $50, but
that offer is no longer available. These upgrade packages
 can be applied to
either Vista or XP. Windows 7 Premium is the most logical
 upgrade for most
people. There is now a family pack available for about
$150
 that allows
upgrading 3 computers. I hear that there is also a
discount
 student version
for around $30. It seems that all that is necessary to
 qualify for this
discount is an email ending with .edu.

I've heard nothing but good about it. Of course, there
 are many
people who don't like Microsoft or anything they make.
 I've also
heard good things about how JAWS interacts with it and it
 sounds like
it will be a better experience with jaws and windows 7
 than it was
 with jaws and Vista.

I heard someone say that on the news today and believed

Just asking that's all, good evening.

good to get to keep up with the latest improvements and

unmark this and it won't be included in the updates any

Thank you for this info, Mike. I have it running but am now wondering about

updates. Since this is the free version, do I need to update it myself once

a week or so, or does this update definitions regularly?

And is it normal for it to take a very long time to do a thorough scan? I
think this is what it's set on, and it barely moves percentage-wise and has
so far taken about an hour. I have 2 hard drives in here so maybe that's
the norm but just wanted to know.

Thanks again.

Chrissy and others, I think I may not have all the check boxes correct.
Would I just check the archive and hard disc ones, or leave them all
unchecked? I definitely don't have folders checked because it looked pretty

confusing when I did try, but wondered how you have your check boxes set up.

I appreciate your help.

Run it and open your winzip archive that you are trying to get the password
to. Leave minimal password length set to 1, max any number you like but make
sure it is higher than your passwords usually are.
Check all boxes for symbols, except user defined. the process takes longer
but this way you are all covered. Hit 'attack'and mark automatic which is
the default, brute force can be selected as well, your call.
Then hit go and specify where to save the found password to.

Why the hesitation in upgrading to the latest version of

hi,
am I right in thinking that Webvisum can only be used with
Firefox?
I've got a few things I want to sign up to, and they all
involve

I'm currently using outlook express, but don't mind changing

Any help will be appreciated.
I haven't been on this list for quite some time because of

I just bought a new Asus EEE Netbook computer. I installed the latest
version of JAWS I won (7.10).

The machine is loaded with I.E. 8.0, and I can't get JAWS to read anything.
Other applications seem to work fine with minor work-arounds, but I.E. is

That I don't know. With regualr folders they usually go back automatically
to the original location.
I just found this tutorial in a mail forum, you may want to give ita try.
Have not checked to see if this will work as I'd hate to mess with my
outlook setup but since the damage was done already it can't hurt to try:

Explore to the Local Settings folder for your identity, then Application
Data - Identites The location for the settings folder is: Documents and
Settings\Username\Local Settings\Application Data\Identities.
There will be several folders with #'s for names with subfolders Microsoft -
Outlook Express. Once you find the one with your e-mails. MOVE, Delete or
Rename the Folders.dbx file. The next time you open OE it will rebuild the
folders list (and the missing links). You'll have to re-sort everything, but
the missing folder should show up.

As always, use at your own risk, hope this helps

If in your recycle bin try and open the bin, arrow down to the item and hit

[JAWS-Users] Windows 7: Start Menu and recommended settings

2009-07-12 Thread ChB
Hi listers,
yesterday I read an article about what all has been changed in windows 7 as
opposed to vista, what has been omitted, added and so forth.
One of the things it said was that windows 7 no longer has the option to
change the start menu to classic start menu. Does this cause any problems
with jaws?
Also, does anyone who has had experience trying out windows 7 have some sort
of list or manual I can check out about what the recommended settings and
changes are that I should make to the OS, in order for it to run smoothly
with jaws?
Using jaws 10.

Hi, the default Windows settings work absolutely fine with JAWS 10. One
change I do make is to change the theme to Windows 7 Classic. This is to get

ridk of the so called task switching list box which is very annoying and I
can't get used to it for some reason. Otherwise all is well with Windows 7

how much does that number mean in terms of how many gigs of memory, I'll
need too ask the geeks on the list, if you folkson here have the answers too

Do you use firefox? There is an option under options in advanced options
(accessibilty). Once there disable (if marked) the field where it says
'search for text when I start typing'. It may have to with that when you
hit enter it catches the auto complete address and not yours. In other
words, say you want to go to a site that starts with 'you, auto complete
will suggest you tube, for example and get you there wen you actually wanted
to go to you shop or something. Sorry for the stupid example. I don't know,
just a suggestion to try out.

In nhave a lenovo netbook to take on tripsand stuff.
I like them a lot. The keyboard takes some getting used to since it is
smaller than a regular notebook's. but I have stuck some dots on significant
keys so I can navigate better.
You can run any jaws on it, I am currently running jaws 9 on mine and it
works perfect.
You could also hook up a portable braille display. I do that to mine a lot
and this also works no problem.
Netbooks usually come with either a linux version or windows xp.
I prefer xp becchaue I never used linux and am really not crazy about this
os. But that is all a matter of personal choice, like much everything else.

If you get a netbook that has a decent processor and 1 gig of ram which is
what most come with then there should be no issues. It will be as powerful
as a notebook with the same specs.

Hi folks,

I am considering dumping my old iron horse Dell laptop and
antique Packmate for a net-book.
I can install either Jaws 9 or 10 latest. The unit would be
used primarily for business including a fair amount of
wireless connectivity.
Software would be pretty much limited to MS-word, Outlook,
PowerPoint and Excel.

First of all how feasible is a net-book for a blind user?
Does it play well with jaws?
What software compatibility issues can I expect?
What are the features and benefits?

The speakers are not state of the art of course. So I would recommend
listening to music you might want to put on your netbook over earphones or
something. But it is ok for jaws and audiobooks and so forth.
My netbook has two usb outputs but you can get small usb hubs, which is what
I use sometimes when I need to hook up more stuff. For on the go, the two
usb ports are, for me usually, enough.

I found the Jaws 10 icon on my desktop and pressed enter. I then went

P.S Jaws 10 was starting automatically before the system restore.

You have to change the verbosity settings. You can do this by pressing jaws
key+V. to change verbosity settings overall and save all changes
permanantely you need to go into configuration manager. In the jaws options
menu go to help programms and arrow down to configurations manager. There
you can set your individual options. There are also set profiles for

Depending on what you mean, you could change the tutor messages from
within the basic settings in the jaws contextual menu, alternatively, if
your jaws is perhaps set to speak all text, you could change that to
highlighted with the long insert key [jaws key] pressed together with
the letter s.

Highlighted is the default.

work with yahoo?

Hi Yvonne,
There are some terms being interchanged here, that shouldn't
be, to avoid
confusion.
1. Windows, refers to the operating system installed on your
computer.
There are many different versions of Windows, such as XP and
Vista.
And to further complicate things the version of Windows
currently in beta is
called Windows 7.
2. Internet Explorer, commonly referred to as I E,is an
internet browser,
used for accessing the internet.
There are several versions of I E, such as versions 6, 7 and
8.
Version 8, is the latest version.
3. Outlook Express, commonly referred to as O E, is an
e-mail client, used
for sending and receiving e-mail messages.
As Flor stated earlier, there is no version higher than 6,
because Microsoft
changed it and gave it another name.

office outlook 2007, so that jaws works best with the program i.e. what
needs to be on or off and what view options work best, etc.
I am using xp and jaws 10 on this notebook. Thanks in advance.
Regards
chrissy

Re: [JAWS-Users] hotmail pop 3 access

2009-04-22 Thread ChB
i could be wrong but last I have read was that pop access does not work with
the regular hotmail accounts, I think they went the route like yahoo, where
this only works now with a premium account that costs a fee.
