Howdy Y'all,

I was on the Jaws Users website & noticed that there is now a Windows10
folder under the Windows heading of the Tips & Tricks page.

Go to:

http://www.jaws-users.com/text/

After clicking on the link above, navigate by heading using the letter, H,
until you get to the Windows heading, then arrow down to Windows10 & press
enter, & you'll be in the Windows10 folder.
Take care.

hi jim:
thanks for the info.
but I really do not need the steps on reinstalling jaws.
I've does this so many times, I can do it in my sleep, so to speak. I'm not
naïve.
so just because I asked a question or told about my experience, do not
assume I'm a newbie.

have a nice day.

yes, you should reinstall Jaws 16, here is why.
yes, you are correct, it does come up talking and you can access the start
button correctly.
but I noticed while playing around with all apps region, and the live tile
area, jaws was very sluggish.
After removing and reinstalling, the apps area and the tile area worked
much smoother.
Microsoft also recommends a fresh install of Jaws 16 after installing
windows 10 from either w-7 or w-8.1.

It is not that difficult to do.
After uninstalling jaws 16, turn on Narrator with windows key+enter, to
close the programs and features window, and go to restart your computer,
press enter.
Wait for a reasonable time until you know that the sign in screen is up,
type your password and press enter.
Again, wait for a reasonable time, press windows key+enter to start
Narrator.
go to your download folder where you will have put the jaws 16 program
file, down arrow to the jaws file.
press caps lock key+escape to exit narrator, or skip this step and wait
until the installation of jaws has started to close narrator.

, now press enter on the Jaws 16 program file to start installation.
Depending on your computer you will either have to press enter again for
the Jaws instillation, or the ALT+y, for the users account dialog which
will pop up.

finish installing Jaws,
Important, if you chose to keep your share settings, which I would and did
do on my computer.
jaws 16 will install and after you hit finish, it will come on speaking,
no restart.

Make sure you reset your short cut start up key for jaws.
Make sure you check the setting and check the box for jaws to come on at
the log on screen before restarting.

Every other setting should be retained.

contacted FS and they told me they had no problem and to try again in a few
hours.

it works sporadically for me.
hopefully someone at FS can reproduce the fault and fix it in an upcoming
update if time permits before the rollout of jaws 16.

so.

I think I've maybe been able to get it to work twice. I wrote FS about it
and while they were able to access weather results, it's still a no go on
my

end. It may be as they said problems on the Internet side of things as
Research It relies on other services/websites to function.

List,

When I attempt to look up the weather, JAWS 14 Beta 2 is only reading the
current condition, temperature, etc, for that day. It will not read
anything
passed that. I.E. When you go to the summaries for the days of the week,
all you will hear JAWS read is Friday, Friday night, Saturday, etc. It
completely
skips the summaries underneath the listing of the days. I just finished
testing this with the latest build of 13, and it works as expected, just
as it did in Beta one. Let me know if you're able to produce this by
looking up the weather for your own area. I'd be interested to find out if
anyone else is experiencing this. Thanks,

Josh

Hi.
Yes it is.
If you are using jaws 12 or 13.
I think jaws 11 also has a researchit feature but it looks pretty basic.
To get sports scores for the current day.
Open researchit.
Delete whatever is in the edit box.
Press tab once.
Press up or down arrow until you hear mlb scores.
Press enter and you get the virtual viewer with the scores.
To get scores and schedule just type the date you want to know about in

Yes it is
You need jaws 11 or higher for this
to invoke the research it function do
insert/jaws key space bar and you will hear a little click
tap the letter r
this brings up the research it edit box
You don't need to type anything here just leave it blank
now tab to the list view of all the categories that research it has and
using the arrows find mlb scores and enter
If you also want you can tap the letter m instead of using the arrows and
then enter

Let me know how you make out okay?
Good luck

give me the steps. Today 1-800-555-Tell closed down. Does anyone know of
another telephone number that can be used to get sports scores?

Thanks,
Donnie

[JAWS-Users] commendations to FS

2012-06-11 Thread Howard
hi all:
as someone who has frequently criticized FS for the problems with research it
sports scores, I must be fair and commend FS when they have a job well-done.
we have gone through two updates since april and no problems.
as we all know, in past years, research it has broken during interleague play.
this year, things are different and research it for baseball is working
flawlessly.
  kudos for FS.

This interesting piece of news was posted on another JAWS-related list, so
I can't vouch for its reliability:

"A tech from FS was reported to have told a seminar at the CSUN conference
that FS does not plan on working on JAWS 13 any longer, it is too much of
a mess.

They advised customers to wait for JAWS 14, which is where the new fixes
will be."

I wonder whether there is any truth to this rumor?

Once you get your new computer/laptop,

Hi

Please can anybody confirm if they are having issues with dot and point
announced.

Fore example before this latest version my jaws desktop icon has always
announced jaws 12 point zero, jaws 13 point zero etc. However it now
announces jaws 12 dot zero, jaws 13 dot zero.

I have tried to alter this under customisation but it alters everything,
for

example in a document instead of 12 point zero being announced where there
is a period used as the divider between the 12 and the zero it will say
dot.

I hope you understand what I mean and can confirm that it is just not me,
sigh.

All,

If you have JAWS 13 and have not gotten the update to build 852 yet,

posted the full build on our download pages now if you have any trouble
with the auto update.

Below is the list of changes.

Regards,

Eric Damery

a.. Improved how JAWS works in ARIA menus in Internet Explorer and
Firefox.
b.. A new DAISY book on using the Convenient OCR feature is now
available. To install this book, select Check for Updates from the JAWS
Help menu, then choose Convenient OCR DAISY Book.

for each team in the results just like with the NFL lookup source.
d.. Resolved issues with the NFL and Business Search ResearchIt lookup
sources not correctly returning results.

not working as expected in Microsoft Excel.
h.. JAWS now announces the character being deleted when you press the
BACKSPACE key in the Express version of Visual Studio 2010.
i.. When US International is set as the default input language in Windows

password edit fields.
j.. In Internet Explorer, If an ARIA live region is inside of an iframe,
JAWS will now read the live region as expected.

computer. When this occured, the computer would need to be manually
powered off.
l.. When performing any of the JAWS table navigation keystrokes in a
message in Lotus Notes, JAWS now indicates that table navigation is not

Yes I just finished An easy way to get there is
bring up jaws interface with insert j
use alt h for the help menu and then tap p for update It should say
something like:

Please wait to see if Jaws updates are available
then if there is you check the check box with the space bar
Good luck

Re: [JAWS-Users] research it sports scores broken again

2012-02-14 Thread Howard

hi rick:
since you're on this list I presume you use jaws also.
yes, jaws has its faults, but if there is a perfect screen reader out there
what is it?
since there is no perfect screen reader available, if you can name one I'll
call you a liar.

what screen reader are you using?
I presume it is jaws since you're on this list.
I just put the info out there so the list would know.
you don't have to be so damn smart and snarky.
and that goes for chris smart, also.
sorry, dave but I get so darn mad when all I did was post the info to the
list.

I didn't make any snide comments this time, either.
I sent a report to tech support and we'll see what gives.
I will not report to the list what they tell me either.
from now on, I won't post anything to this list since when I do all I get is
snarky responses.

I am only on this list for any info I may be able to use about jaws, anyhow.
dave, this is a wonderful but we sure have some really snarky people on it,
though.

take care, folks.

yep. sure is.
I wondered how long it would take until someone else noticed this.
you would think someone at FS would know about it especially since eric

maybe he'll chime in and let us know why he didn't let us know before we had

makes me wonder if they really use research it for sports anyhow.
and no, I will not back down from this statement and this will be my only

Try the straight Wikipedia:

He's there.

that's generally how you find articles, independently, using that (or

If you use the companion software, the number of kilobytes is listed for
each book and you can check how much room is left on the cartridge by
looking at the status line. With jaws this is insert page down. For a 1
gig cartridge, I can get 6 or 7 books on it, depending on their length.
There is usually a bit of room left, but not enough for a book.

GBcartridge?

Hi all,
There may be an easier way to calculate but...
I downloaded DB-Burnett, Carol-One More Time- A Memoir-DB25096 from USA
Bard

library and it states that book is 10 hours 31 minutes.
I went into properties and book is
Size: 110 MB (115,449,182 bytes)
My friend has a 1 GB cartridge and he asked me how many books could fit on
a

cartridge.
1 GB = 1000 MB
I used the 110 mb but I needed to round the bytes to 116 to get a good
rounded number without truncation.
so 1000 divided by 116 = 8.6
So approximately 8 complete books that are 10 hours and 31 minutes long
could fit on 1 GB cartridge.
Or approximately 84 / 85 hours can fit on a 1 GBB cartridge if downloaded
from Bard site.
What I did is that I copied the book to cartridge and then renamed it 1 to
9

and copied to cartridge and on the ninth time Windows stated disk is full.
At first I divided 1000 by 110 but I need to take the byte size and round
up

to get an approximation.

of this 10.5 hours could fit on a 1 GB cartridge.

Hi All,

In addition to the full links below, here is the list of
changes/enhancements in the December update.

Regards,
Eric

Enhancements in JAWS 13.0.638 (December 2011)

The following is a list of items addressed or added between the final
JAWS 13.0.527 release and the JAWS 13.0.638 posting.

JAWS
*Resolved issues with the Research It sports scores lookup sources
where the expected results were not being returned whether you entered a
specific date or not.
*Addressed an issue with the Wiktionary lookup source not returning a
definition if searching for a word containing uppercase letters.
*Resolved an issue with the Time Search lookup source for Research It
only returning the list of time formats you can use, however no actual
results for your search were returned.
*Updated the JAWS Help system to make it easier for users to locate
firewall and ILM multi-user network authorization information. These
topics can be found under Network JAWS and in the Index.
*JAWS no longer says "selected" when using SHIFT+LEFT ARROW or
SHIFT+RIGHT ARROW in ribbons to move between groups.
*When performing a Say All using a setting other than the default Line
without pauses, addressed an issue where JAWS would read the last line,
sentence, or paragraph continuously until CTRL was pressed to silence
speech.
*JAWS is now less verbose when announcing the start or end of ARIA
regions on Web pages.
*When using Convenient OCR, the resulting text now remains available if
you switch between the JAWS and Invisible Cursor. The text is removed
when you activate the PC Cursor.
*Addressed an issue where JAWS was not properly speaking the Username
edit field on the Talking Communities Webinar client login screen.
*Resolved a customer reported issue where JAWS would speak part of the
word just typed when pressing BACKSPACE and Typing Echo is set to
Characters and Words.

Adobe Acrobat
*Resolved an intermittent issue where JAWS would unexpectedly close
when doing a JAWS Find in a PDF document.

Eclipse
*Resolved issues using JAWS with the Rational Team Concert plug-in.

Eudora
*Addressed an issue of JAWS speaking extraneous information when
pressing CTRL+D to delete a message.

Lotus Notes
*Resolved a reported issue where SameTime conversations were not
refreshing.

Microsoft Excel
*Addressed several instances where braille was not tracking properly in
Line Mode.
*Monitor cell information is now shown in braille as a flash message.
*Resolved an issue where JAWS was not properly reading the controls in
the Format Chart Area dialog box.
*Resolved an issue where the Total column option in Quick Settings was
not remaining on the same setting with a braille display connected.
*After pressing EQUALS on a cell to begin a formula and then selecting
a range of cells, resolved an issue where JAWS would not properly
announce the selection.
*Addressed issues of controls in the Sort dialog box not reading
correctly.
*Resolved double speaking issues encountered when entering data into a
cell.

Microsoft Internet Explorer
*When on the last line of a multi-line edit field and Forms Mode is not
active, resolved an issue where pressing the END key would jump to the
beginning of the field instead of the end of the line as expected.
*Pressing INSERT+SHIFT+V no longer opens the Personalized Web Settings
dialog box. You can configure personalized Web settings using Quick
Settings (INSERT+V).
*Resolved an issue where alt text in links was not being spoken when

hi:
yep.

the Text Links Show option in Quick Settings was set to Title.
*After using SHIFT+ENTER to open a link in a new window, when you close
the window, focus now returns to the link you opened. Previously, JAWS
would place you back at the top of the page.
*Resolved an issue with the Page Refresh option in Quick Settings.

Microsoft Outlook
*JAWS is now much more responsive when navigating messages in Outlook
2010 that contain graphics.
*Resolved an issue where pressing ENTER on a button in the spell
checker would not work unless you first used INSERT+3 to pass the
keystroke through. Activating buttons with the SPACEBAR worked
correctly.
*Resolved reported issues of JAWS not reading reliably while navigating
in the Calendar using the Day View.
*When navigating text you are editing in the Signatures and Stationary
dialog box in Outlook 2007 and 2010, addressed an issue where JAWS would

Enhancements in JAWS 13.0.241 (October 13, 2011)

The following is a list of improvements made between JAWS 13.0.171,
public beta 2, and 13.0.241, public beta 3. Note that while many
customer reported enhancements are included in this release, the
following is a list of more notable changes.

JAWS

* Resolved an issue with all of the sports scores look up sources
for Research It not returning any results.
* Resolved issues with the Stock Quotes Research It look up
source.
* Resolved an issue selecting Mark Colors in Braille from the Run
JAWS Manager dialog box where JAWS would use the Custom Highlight Assign
instead. Selecting Mark Colors in Braille now works as expected.
* You can now perform commands that include the SPACEBAR directly
from a Focus braille display. For example, ALT+SPACEBAR to open the
System menu, or INSERT+SPACEBAR to activate the JAWS keystrokes layer.
* Updated the INSERT+W help message for the Webinar training room
plug-in to remove references to keystrokes that are no longer supported.
* If Quick Settings is open in another window, resolved an issue
where pressing INSERT+V while in the JAWS window, the title of the Quick
Settings dialog box was not getting announced as it gained focus.
* Added long Keyboard Help messages for the list of onMouseOvers
(INSERT+WINDOWS KEY+SEMICOLON), next clickable element (SLASH), prior
clickable element (SHIFT+SLASH), and list of clickable elements
(INSERT+CTRL+SLASH) keystrokes. To hear the long description for a
command, press the keystroke twice quickly.
* Added an Include Dimensions option to the General Options group
in Quick Settings. When selected, JAWS will announce dimensions for
graphics embedded in documents or Outlook messages where Word is the
editor.
* Resolved an intermittent issue saving default settings in
Settings Center.
* Resolved an issue where bullets were not displaying correctly in
braille with certain documents opened in WordPad.
* Addressed an issue with the Reuters Research It lookup source
where only five stories were listed even though the results page says
top 10 stories. Research It now lists all 10 stories.
* When pressing BACKSPACE in an edit field of a Java application,
JAWS now reads the character being deleted.
* When opening the Select a Voice Profile dialog box
(INSERT+CTRL+S), resolved an issue where the currently selected profile
was not displayed on the screen.

IBM Lotus Notes

* Addressed an issue of JAWS not reading section titles while
navigating in a note.

Microsoft Excel

* The help messages that are spoken when entering or editing a
formula are now also shown on the braille display as flash messages.
* Addressed an issue with the Input message edit field in the Data
Validation dialog box not being spoken and brailled correctly.
* Resolved issues changing between manually defined column and row
titles to automatically defined column and row titles determined in the
Excel spreadsheet.
* Resolved an issue in Excel 2007 and 2010 where the content of
text boxes was not being displayed in the Virtual Viewer. There were
only blank lines where the text in the box should have appeared.
* When navigating the list of functions for inserting into a
spreadsheet, addressed an issue where JAWS was not speaking or
displaying in braille the function description.
* Addressed an issue with editing the contents of a text box.
* If you want to manually set column and row title reading, you no
longer have to open the Quick Settings dialog box multiple times to
configure these options.
* If you add a hyperlink to another worksheet in the same
spreadsheet, resolved an issue where JAWS would not announce the
hyperlink if it was in a merged cell.

Microsoft Internet Explorer

* Improved navigating frames on a Web page that contain a Long
Description attribute. This was addressed for both Internet Explorer and
Firefox.
* Resolved issues creating a word list (CTRL+INSERT+W) on Web
pages in both Internet Explorer and Firefox.

All,

As you may know, ESPN made changes last June which caused ResearchIt to
fail for getting sports scores and schedules. I pleased to let you know
that we have found a solution and in the 3rd Public Beta of JAWS 13, due
out soon. The new solution, and the ability to alt tab back to results
for the ResearchIt lookup, is a great improvement I think you will
appreciate. It is not clear yet what the effort will be to get this into
a JAWS 12 hotfix after 13 is released. We will have to determine the
effort and risk in porting this new solution back to 12.

Jonathan Mosen discusses the new features of JAWS 13 with Eric Damery and
Dan Clark. The public beta is scheduled for release during the second
week of September, so it should be out shortly. Very interesting.

ok, here is some key strokes that will work on any mac to get VoiceOver
working.

If on a iMac or mac pro,
Just do command key + f5 to turn on.
If using a bookPro,
Just do a fn key + command key + f5.
If you do a control + option key +k, turn on keyboard mode like insert +1
for jaws.
If you do a control +option + h, turns on help menu for voiceOver
commands.
Now for some keyboard key location. You can use any keyboard. Starting
from left bottom, control key, windows/option key, alt/command key.

That should get you up and going to have a look around.

No. The bad news is that there is no jaws for mac. The good news is that
any recent version of the mac operating system already comes with the
screenreader for mac tied into the operating system. This native Mac
Screenreader is Called Voiceover and has becomeq quite good. Google for
"Voiceover" and you should find plenty of information for you and your
colleague. Also, I am sure that there is a voiceover email support group
out there but I do not know subscriptioninformation. Again I refer you to

FS would better serve its customers by eliminating the Research It feature
from future versions of JAWS. Constantly issuing fixes for Research It
every time a web page layout changes is counter-productive, and detracts
from the time FS's software development team can devote to more important
issues. To be perfectly blunt, Research It does not enhance the basic
functionality of JAWS and only makes it more bloated and prone to
problems. Besides, all the information available through Research It can
just as easily be found with a Google search. Oh sure, Research It is
more convenient, but at what price?

PROBLEM

Hi everyone,
I tried everything before finally deciding to post this note so that other
people with 64 bit systems won't get into the same mess I did.
Apparently, for 32 bit users, the latest patch works just fine. But it
doesn't for 64 bit people, or at least it didn't for me. Please see
details

below.

1. Tried automated download and received a message:
"DOWNLOAD ERROR. Cannot install the Jaws Patch. Recommend perform a
repair

and try again. Okay."

2. Went to the site and downloaded an entire new Jaws 12. Received the
same message.

3. Uninstalled Jaws and re-installed from my original disk. Did not
receive

a warning but the system wouldn't work at all.
Couldn't open e-mail messages.
Couldn't read documents. All cursors locked in position and not moveable.

4. THE FINAL SOLUTION! Got this idea from David
Ferrin. Performed a System Restore and took the time back a couple of
days

before the problem event.
Jaws went back to normal operation but started pestering me every time
about
downloading the latest updates. Finally, checked the box indicating I
don't

want to be notified of any updates.

5. Reported the problem in detail to Freedom Scientific in an e-mail
message.
I received the automated confirmation so I know that the message was
received.

CONCLUSION: It appears that Freedom fixed the issues with the 32 bit
version but there is still a problem with the 64 bit patch.

Hey listers,

I am dealing with a new Dell PC with Windows 7 Professional 64 bit. First
problem I noticed was that Narrator, although loaded, does not speak.
Second problem is there was no speech during the installation of JAWS 12
from a DVD. All I heard was the waves sloshing against the beach. Which
is nice, but hardly worth the money. Anyway, Jaws is loaded, but no
speech. I do have Windows system sounds, and audio CDs and Internet
streams play fine. Seems as though it is a text to speech problem, but
I'll be danged if I can figure out how to resolve it. As usual, all
suggestions and advice are mucho appreciated.

Before you send it to your CD drive, add the file to your windows media

hit control S and the playing will stops. See if that helps you find the

Lenny, I am running jaws 12 with windows 7 on a 64 bit machine, and I
use

WIMP 12 to burn CD's all the time. Here's what I do. There are probably
better ways, but here is what I do.
So you rip the files from the original CD to wherever you keep them on
your

computer.
Next, I give the folder those particular files in a name, like the name
of

the CD.
Next, I send that folder to my CD Drive, wherever yours is on your
computer.
The minute I do that, it asks me to put a blank disk into my computer,
so I
do that. then, it asks me what type of disk I want to burn, data or for
a
regular CD player. So I choose what I want. then it asks me to title
the
disk, so I do. then it says next, and since I have chosen WIMP 12 to be
my
default player in terms of burning disks, WIMP 12 comes up. then, if
you tab
over to you hear library button, you will hear, Start burn button. So
hit

your space bar, and the CD will start to burn. I hope this helps. Jim

in order to burn an audio cd. I do not think it matters but these are mp3
files that I downloaded from amazon for the neighbor. I want them burned
as au files for the kids.

Lenny, tab around again, and go slowly. I have done what you have done,
and

found that I just missed it. There's probably a key stroke to use to do
this, and I don't know it. Also, try this.
Before you send it to your CD drive, add the file to your windows media
player play list. the minute you do that, it will start to play. So then,
hit control S and the playing will stops. See if that helps you find the
start burn button. Jim

So I choose what I want. then it asks me to title the
disk, so I do. then it says next, and since I have chosen WIMP 12 to be
my
default player in terms of burning disks, WIMP 12 comes up. then, if you
tab
over to you hear library button, you will hear, Start burn button. So
hit

your space bar, and the CD will start to burn. I hope this helps. Jim

On this new win 32 bit machine windows media player 12.0.7600 is
installed. I just want to burn an audio cd. I can not figure out how to
do it. I had to have my wife make the cds. On the old machine with nero
it was so easy. With this I could not copy and paste the music mp3 files
and I could not locate the start burn button with jaws. It is not very
often that I make an audio cd. Amazon.com had a free download of some
veggietales music and I wanted to make it for the neighbor’s kids. Is
there something more friendly to use with jaws 12?

Howard,

Just so I understand you- are you saying if I'm running 32 bit Windows7
and Jaws11, I can just go to nextup.com, ignore their repeated messages
all over claiming the ATT natural voices they sell work only with their
software, purchase my choice of ATT natural voices anyway, then after
purchase simply run the executable and voila after the install Jaws will
be able to detect them and allow me to select them from the voice menu in
JAWS?
