Hi Candy,
JawsKeyPlusEscape, when pressed often will bring it back, most of the time.
Using Jaws10 and Win7 with the new video intercept (and that seemed to have
worsened the Notepad problem). It did however fix the Mirror Display driver

Hello everyone,
I am using Jaws 11, and all of a sudden am having problems with notepad.
When I type a text document, it will let me read about 14 or 15 lines with
jaws, and then the next line says, start.
If I unload jaws, and use system access, it lets me read the entire
document. Any suggestions?

Subject: [JAWS-Users] Using FS Reader to read mp3 Audio Books

Dear list

I offer this tip.
Experimenting with the full version of FSReader that comes with Jaws 11 I
have found that it is very good at reading mp3 audio books. In particular
the capacity to increase reading rate with control page up is better than
any other software that I have come across for this feature. Unlike other
solutions for accelerating playback the distortion level is low. It seems a
bit like having the Victor Reader Stream reading capacity on your PC.

As I understand it, even if you download and install only the demo version
of Jaws 11 you will get the full version of FSReader.

Of course FSReader will not normally read mp3 audio books as it looks only
for daisy content.
However I have found an easy way to convert a folder of mp3 files into a
Daisy book that FSReader will open and read.

The first step is to copy the folder of mp3 files you want to convert into
an easy place to find on your PC. I copied a book onto my C drive and
renamed the folder daisy.

Now download the free Daisy book Generator from

http://jaapvanlelieveld.xs4all.nl/daisy.htm

Install the Daisy Book Generator and run the program from your programs
menu.

The program is a very simple command line program. There are no menus or
buttons.
Simply type in the path of the folder you want to become a Daisy Book and
then press enter.
In my case this is C:\daisy
It seems impossible to copy and paste a long path into the program which is
why I suggest you copy the folder you want to convert into an easy to type
location.
Press enter if you get any warning messages from the program about the
filenames you have in your folder.

The program will then start converting your folder of mp3 files into a daisy
book.
The program will prompt you when this is completed and then pressing enter
again will close the program.

Now you will find that FS Reader will recognise this folder as a daisy book
and play the contents.

Regards

Subject: [JAWS-Users] "Read current paragraph" - not possible?

Hi,

Here's an idea I have had for some time. I am one who sometimes navigates
by paragraph - ctrl+DownArrow to read next paragraph; ctrl+UpArrow to read
previous paragraph. However, say I want to read the current paragraph,
which is not the same thing as reading line by line. (think of this as if
you were reading a news story: and you want to 'read that again', something
that flagged your attention in the paragraph you are reading but before you
proceed onward, you have to repeat to make sure you apprehend it right.)
Currently, there is no single keystroke for 'reading current paragraph' or
going to the beginning of the paragraph and scrolling it - in Windows terms.

I know that the ctrl and arrow keys are Windows movement keys. But people
move by paragraph because that's how they want to read or view the writing.
perhaps something - a script - could be done with JAWS to make this 'read
current paragraph' possible? I hope that makes sense. This lack in Windows
is something I've noticed for a long, long time; and something I now think
should - and quite easily could - be corrected.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Real speak solo direct

2009-05-28 Thread Jon C. Pierson
Hi Chris,
Before you can see the Realspeak voices you first have to press JawsKey Plus
S and then select Sapi 5. Then they should show up in the list of synths
under Voices in the JawsMenu.
When in the Jaws Menu under Options, voices, global tab twice to the list of
synths and hit the letter r for Realspeak. From there you can tab through
the rest of the options to select specific voices and parameters.

Hello Chris,

My Jaws distributor's file received from FS, of the real speak solo direct
synthesizer, would also not show up, until they installed a different copy,
which I think may have been downloaded from the fs site, but I'm not sure.

However, you can have both realspeak sapi 5 and solo direct installed on one
computer, as I use the sapi 5 with Kurzweil and can also now access the solo
direct via jaws. But the solo direct is proprietary, so you cannot use that
with e.g. Kurzweil or narrator.

You can however still use the sapi 5 realspeak voices with jaws and there's
really no big difference to the, said to be improved, solo direct version.

Hello all,
For the past few months I've been running JAWS 10 in 40 minute mode and the
rest of the time JAWS 9. I have since upgraded to and authorized JAWS 10,
and so far everything's working as expected. I performed about six Tandem
sessions for my friends. I was able to update from the first to the current
build of JAWS 10 with no problems. The other features are working great,
particularly autoforms mode. I do, however, have a slight issue, but I think
this is because I have the RealSpeak SAPI5 synthesizers installed.
Basically, although I installed RealSpeak Solo Direct I can't see them in my
list of voice profiles. I restarted JAWS, and even my PC, and they're still
not there. Do I need to remove the SAPI5 version first before I can see
them? Please advise. Otherwise all is well. Thanks for any help you can
offer.

Seriously though, you can get different cooling pads to put under laptops.

Hi Folks,

Anyone have any idea what a land mark is on a web page?

I'm assuming it has something to do with it's navigation or some such, but a
site I've been accessing on a daily basis for the last year or so seems to
have screwed up to the point that I can't access it the way I used to.

For example, one of the data tables that house the message lists are not
displaying properly, and I can't click on some of the links, particularly in
my mail options page, which is important to me and how I view my mail.

Some of you may be familiar with this change as I have noticed it on Yahoo's
mail servers page.

Those with an A T & T/SBC Global account may notice this type of change.

Can anyone tell me if this is related to Internet Explorer 8 or not, or
whether this is yahoo's fault, as I have noticed that they tend to make
changes to their website without our consultation.

Can anyone shed some light on this?

Thanks.

Hi Rangs,
The non-permanent way is to press Jawskey Plus Numrow2 until you hear none
among the choices for "Key Echo".

You can also make the same changes permanent by:
1. Opening configuration Manager with JawsKey plus Numrow 6 or choosing it
from the JawsKey Plus F2 Managers list.
2. Press Control plus shift plus d to open the default configuration file as
you want this setting in all situations.
3. Press Alt Plus S and then enter for User Options.
4. Press Tab until you hear Typing Echo.
5. Select the radio button for none and press enter.
6.Save your changes with Control Plus S and Exit with Alt Plus f4.

1. Windows, refers to the operating system installed on your computer.
There are many different versions of Windows, such as XP and Vista.
And to further complicate things the version of Windows currently in beta is
called Windows 7.
2. Internet Explorer, commonly referred to as I E,is an internet browser,
used for accessing the internet.
There are several versions of I E, such as versions 6, 7 and 8.
Version 8, is the latest version.
3. Outlook Express, commonly referred to as O E, is an e-mail client, used
for sending and receiving e-mail messages.
As Flor stated earlier, there is no version higher than 6, because Microsoft
changed it and gave it another name.

Hi Simon,
He asked about a router, not a modem, your suggestion won't work.
Albert, try going to

Good afternoon everyone
On wednesday of this week, I am going to change my internet service
provider from Verizon's dsl service too that of time Warner Cable's road
runner service. My two questions are as follows.

First, I don't remember what kind of wireless routerthat I have installed on

this computer, as it was installed about two or three years ago. Is there a

way that I can find out this information before Wednesday? Second, is it
easy to setup and configure the new settings for the router through time
warner? how would I go aboute doing this, as I have never done anything like

this before and am very afraid of making a terrible mistake. There asking
for an additional50 dollars for setting up the router. Do you folks think
that I should let them do this? or should I try it on my own with your help
and advice. I'm using jaws 10 with windows xp home addition with service

Re: [JAWS-Users] jaws 10 & notepad

2009-05-02 Thread Jon C. Pierson
Hi Gary,
Actually, the settings are for Notepad, not for mail.
I say this because and I quote you message below:

"You suggested that I should make sure Word Wrap is checked while in an open
message>

Also, I know it's probably the first suggestion you got but have you made
sure the Notepad application is running maximized with alt plus space
followed by X?
If all of these things don't work then I lean toward something
display-related such as background and the like.

Hi Mike & all,

You suggested that I should make sure Word Wrap is checked while in an open
message. I made sure Word Wrap is checked.

You also said that I should go to the configuration manager under the Text
option and make sure enhanced is unchecked.

I went to the JAWS Configuration Manager and found "Enhanced Edit Support"
in the Text Processing Dialog. I made sure that it was unchecked. Is this
the setting you mentioned?

I'm new to JAWS and I could have easily misunderstood you. I get stuttering
when I try to read by line or character.

Maybe I should keep playing with other settings along with the ones you
mentioned. Regardless, I appreciate your help.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Muting JFW

2009-04-22 Thread Jon C. Pierson
Hi,
You can certainly mute JFW by:
1. Bringing up the Jaws Verbosity Dialog with Jawskey plus V.
2. Hit the "End" key to go to the bottom of the list or tree.
3. You will hear: "Synthesizer Speech On". Pressing the spacebar hear mutes
your synth.
Pressing the spacebar again brings speech back.
This is certainly worth a look if someone has already looked at the volume
control sliders and mute check boxes.

Flor,

All I know for sure is he hit the insert key and didn't know what else he
was doing. What confused me, is the sighted person went into the control
panel and un muted something in there. That sounds to me, it had something
to do with the volume control, instead of a JFW problem.

Re: [JAWS-Users] AVG Identity Component

2009-04-21 Thread Jon C. Pierson
Hi,
Here's some info on this, looks legit.
Identity Protection

The Identity Protection module helps to prevent identity theft and protects
your personal information against threats from new and unknown badware.

Traditional security products rely on "signatures" to protect your
information against viruses and spyware, and that’s just fine for dealing
with existing
threats. AVG's identity theft protection goes a step further by adding an
extra layer of defense that uses advanced behavioral technology to detect
and
block new and unknown threats.

Subject: [JAWS-Users] AVG Identity Component

Yesterday I was prompted by a box claiming to be AVG saying that I should
install a new component designed to prevent identity theft. I did so but
have a slight concern since that this was a genuine AVG update.
The reason I have become suspicious is that my AVG Internet Security
Firewall is alerting me that this component is attempting to connect to the
internet. It seems slightly odd that AVG Firewall would not know about one
of its own components. The second cause for concern is that after doing
some online banking tonight my IE reported that it had encountered a problem
with an adding and needed to close. On checking the details for this the
adding causing the problem appeared to be again an AVG component.

The concern is that I have inadvertently let something in claiming to be AVG
which in fact is not. Is there anybody who can reassure me on this point?

David Griffith

Subject: [JAWS-Users] creating message rules for different folders!

Hi list members, i seem to be having problems with creating message rules
for different messages. Some times the names of the lists that i'm on are
in different places. As an example some times the name of the list is in
the subject line of the message, other times the name is in the to field,
but where else might the names of the different lists be? I'm not sure and
this is why i'm asking so that i can properly create message rules that
won't croud my in box. Thank you.

I need to know the server protocol for a com cast email account.
Specifically the incoming and outgoing server terminology. This should be
easy as there are quite a large number of com cast customers on here.

I also did it. When I reopened file, it just asked me if I wanted to enter
what was in the file into the register. Did I do it correct? It didn't say

anything about balloons. I just hit yes.

Hi Mike,
Notice the "no" in the code, it turns off all balloon notifications.
You can reverse the process and re-enable them by substituting "Yes" for
"NO" keeping the quotes intact and reimport it into your registry.

Good evening,

Not sure if this question has been answered, but the file can be
found in:

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Freedom Scientific

Also, the following URL is for a fairly popular JAWS scripting mailing

In " Basics_of_Scripting.chm" which is in the Jaws10\manuals folder under

any ideas on where to get this kind of documentation?

The only thing I'd say for folks new to this program is read the dialogs as

Hello John,

I remember a few years ago when CCleaner was not very easy to use. If you
have an older version then you might consider updating it to the latest
version, which as of today is 2.17.853. I am using JAWS 10 and all the
controls I mentioned in my earlier message are easily accessed in this
version using the tab key and other navigational commands. You can download

the latest version of CCleaner from
http://www.filehippo.com/download_ccleaner/

The "download latest version" link should start the download. You might
have to use Alt-N to access the information bar and then use the application

key for a context menu in which will be a choice for downloading the file.

Take care.

Hello,

I thought that I would point out for those of you who were unable to get the

registry cleaner being discussed, that the CCleaner registry cleaner has
been well thought of for a long time. If you have CCleaner then you might
want to read the rest of this message.

To use the registry cleaner in CCleaner:

1. Open CCleaner from the desktop icon.
2. Tab to the registry button and press spacebar.
3. Tab five times to the tree view of items to be included in the scan.
Registry integrity will be the opened level in the tree structure.
4. Use down arrow to the various choices under registry integrity. Each
one will be checked. If you don't want a particular item included in the
scan then press spacebar to remove the checkmark. The following items will
be in the tree view:
Missing shared DLLS
Unused file extensions
ActiveX and class issues
Type libraries
Applications
Fonts
Application paths
Help files
Installer
Obsolete software
Run at startup
Start menu ordering
MUI cache.
5. Tab past the list view, which will have zero items before the scan.
6. Tab to the "scan for issues" button and press spacebar.
7. When the scan starts the "cancel button" will be in focus. Use
shift-tab to move to the list of items being found.
If you want to when the scan is done you can use down arrow in the list and
use spacebar to uncheck anything you don't want included in the fix. All
missing DLLS will be shown first in the list, then all missing unused file
extensions, etc. The list will reflect all items in the order of the
choices in the tree view.
In the class section of the scanned problems you will find such things as
"open with application" issues, "invalid default icons" help file issues,
activeX problems and others. The entire path of files being referenced in
the registry is shown. Installer reference issues and uninstaller issues
are also listed with complete paths.
  8. Tab twice from the list to the "fix selected issues" button and press
spacebar. You will be asked if you want to backup changes to the registry,
which is a nice addition to the program. I suggest answering "yes." You
will be shown a "save as" dialog. The file name suggested starts with CC
for CCleaner and then shows the date and time starting with the year. It is

a .reg file. Save it where you wish to. If you have Vista you can route
JAWS to PC, do a page up, and arrow down to the line where the save to
location is found to know where the file is being saved. Turn on PC cursor
and then tab to the save button and press spacebar.
9. The dialog box that appears will show the first problem found. You can
route JAWS to PC, do a page up and then arrow down a line at a time to hear
the problem. After putting on PC cursor you can then tab to the "fix issue"

button to resolve the problem being shown, or use tab key to move to the
"fix all selected issues" button and press spacebar.
10. A dialog will appear asking if you are sure you want to fix either the
issue or all selected issues. Press spacebar on OK.
11. If you chose to fix all issues then in the resultant dialog you will be
shown how many issues were fixed. Use JAWS cursor to read the information.
Turn on PC cursor and use tab key to the close button and press spacebar.
12. You can then close CCleaner. If it doesn't close with Alt-F4 or through

a system menu then close it with the JAWS cursor. Route JAWS to PC, do a
page Up to the top of the window, arrow down once and press home key. use
CTRL-left arrow to move to the last graphic on the first line of the window
and do a left mouse button click simulation (slash on the number pad if
using a desktop configuration or caps lock with the number 8 on a laptop
configuration).

You might run the scan again and find additional items.

Take care.

[JAWS-Users] Jaws starting slowly

2009-02-16 Thread Jon C. Pierson
Hi,
One more thing for the person with the slow Jaws startup, try getting a copy
of bootvis, you'll have to Google for it. It's a Microsoft program for
perking up your PC's startup.
Run it and on the Trace menu, choose optimize system and press enter. This
will reboot your pc and organize the files for faster startup.
You've done everything else I can think of other than to disabling something
you've recently added that runs at startup if any.

I very much doubt that is slowing the computer. I have one old machine where
the fan doesn't always run. Allow it to cool, then when you turn it on
insert something insulated and small. I use little stir sticks from the
hospital cafeteria, into the vent slots for the fan and give the blades a
little flick or two or three or four. I can often thus get the fan spinning.

If the circuitry gets too warm you certainly get thermal run-away but that
will cause all sort of dysfunction not just slow boot-up time.

I suppose the memory or other self check may be failing and re-starting
several times thus slowing boot-up.

2009-02-15 Thread Jon C. Pierson
Hi,
You're talking about the chip fan and they too can beoiled in the same way.
There is however another one, in the power supply.
Again you should have some basic knowledge about electrical things and a
fair bit of mechanical aptitude. The power supply dismounts from the case
with 4 screws, the cover of the supply comes off with 4 flat-head Phillips
screws, the fan is mounted to the back of the supply behind the grill with 4
plastic-tapping screws of a fairly large diameter.
Taking out a supply means disconnecting the 40-pin motherboard connector,
probably a 4-pin p4 connector, all power cables to your hard drive and
floppy, and well make sure you know what you are doing before trying this
at home.
Once you've done it a couple of times it's cake.

It can fry it. There are two fans: The PC fan, and the motherboard fan.
The computer tries to save itself, but there is only so much it can do. The

PC fan can be fixed (by a replacement fan) fairly easily. When the
motherboard fan goes, so does the motherboard; and that all takes longer and

is more expensive.

I am working on a computer with a non-functioning fan. It operates
really slowly. This is the same one that takes 90 seconds to load
JAWS at start-up. Can the heat from not having a fan slow down the
computer? Is it trying to save itself from committing suicide

Thanks.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Computer with broken fan

2009-02-15 Thread Jon C. Pierson
Hi,
If you are into fixing things, many of these fans just need a drop of
lubricant. There is usually a sticker on the back side of the middle of the
fan under which is either the backend of the motor shaft or a small rubber
plug covering the former. Removing the plug, oiling appropriately and
putting the sticker back on should get you a couple more years of fan life.
Purists wil say "buy a new one", they are cheap online.
It has worked for me in many an emergency.

Re: [JAWS-Users] winnt.sif Windows XP Self Installer

2009-02-15 Thread Jon C. Pierson
Hi Jack,
You obtain a bootable cd, create an iso of that and add the .sif file to
your i386 folder using a tool which will let you edit the iso file and then
burn that back to a cd, giving you a bootable cd on which windows will find
the answer automatically.
The only thing is to catch that "press any key to boot from cd" message as
it comes up on-screen by hitting the spacebar repeatedly when you start the
machine, then your off to the races.
If the bios isn't set to boot from cd first then you need a flopp with the
answer filey

Now, this is for a floppy drive. Not sure how you do it without one. If
anyone knows, please let me know.
Once you fill in all the information that's appropriate for your computer,
you save the file as a .txt file. Then, after you save it, you change the
extention from .txt to .sif.

Well, I have an off the shelf computer that came with Windows Vista already
installed on it. It has a partition that's labeled "Drive D." This is the
original OS as it came from the factory. If I should ever need to restore
my computer, one of the options is to restore it to the original factory
settings. Now, should the whole drive die, so then would my copy of Vista.

Ar, Vista would be slightly easier then as the product key is only required
if you wish to commit to the licence and thus activate the product. When you
install Vista without a product key it will run as a 30 day, fully
functional trial.

I've installed XP manually several times. The only thing you may need
sighted assistance on for the first few times is the entry of the product
key. Once you've done that it should be pretty straightforward once you've
memorized the keystrokes.

Hi,
Let me chime in here to say that yes, you may need assistance (and not
necessarily sighted assistance) but not because you can't see.

In other words a totally blind person can do complete XP installs, I've done
far too many myself of late do to changing hardware needs and upgrades to my
machine.
I just did 3 machines for a friend who managed to blow up a pretty stable OS
in XP repeatedly.
He doesn't know enough to do such work and it's not like his eyes are
broken.
If you are a first-timer at this, help is in order. There is a lot of info
out there about doing an unattended install from Dos or better yet, making a
bootable cd with the script file included which formats the drive and enters
all the relevant information for you about your Windows installation. You
can even have it start Narrator or the installer for your favorite screen
reader at the end of the process.

Re: [JAWS-Users] reformatting hard drive?

2009-02-15 Thread Jon C. Pierson

Hi,
Let me chime in here to say that yes, you may need assistance (and not
necessarily sighted assistance) but not because you can't see.

Kliph,

As someone who has done the very thing you want to do, I can tell you that
you will need to have someone there with sight. And if you have your
Windows CD, it reformats the drive before it starts reinstalling the
operating system. Just make sure that you've backed up everything you want
to save. Because once you start to reinstall Windows, everything on the
drive will be gone. With my other computer, I had a floppy drive that had a

winnt.SIF file on it. This had all the instructions on it for installing
Windows XP. As Windows was being installed, it would look to the floppy
drive for all the installation instructions. But you still needed sighted
help with some of it.
In short, don't try this on your own.

How would I go about reformatting my hard drive? There are something's that
aren't working like they should, and I'm tired of hearing the error message
and trying to fix it. Also, how easy is it to reinstall my OS? Thanks in

Re: [JAWS-Users] microsoft word question

2009-02-12 Thread Jon C. Pierson
Hi,
If you reread her original email you will see that you missed part of her
description of the problem.
Jaws is announcing file position as she downarrows through the list and is
skipping in increments of three.
If she was only showing one file type, Jfw would still number them correctly
i.e. "1 of 2", "2 of 2" and so on.
One of the first responses explained that this is either a grid or icon view
being displayed and that right arrowing would show the rest of the files.
In other words,3 files per line are displaying with 1 through 3 on the top
line, 4 through 6 on the next line and so on.
So naturally, downarrowing on file one will bring you to file 4, and then
seven with the view set up this way.

Hi all;
I have 10.00 and XP home.
When I am in Microsoft word and go to the list of files by hitting Control
O.
I then shift tab until I get the list of files.
It seems that JAWS does not read the entire list.
JAWS seems to read every third file.
I will hit the "say line" and JAWS reads the name of the file and says 11
of 83.
I down arrow once and it says the name of the file 14 of 83.
I can't find 12 and 13.
It's like this down the entire list, reading third file.

Thanks for any help.

Hi Folks,

In previous versions of Jaws, one could press alt+spacebar to get to the
system menu, where one could simply press the letter X to maximize the
window.

That is no longer possible with version 10.

I'm assuming that FS has replaced this keystroke with another one, and so
I'm wondering what it is.

As of now, I'm forced to use my Jaws cursor to go to the top of the window
and click on the maximize button, which, needless to say, is a pain the
royal backside.

Is there a keystroke that will maximize the window or allow me to access the
system menu on a window in order to perform what I want to do?

Any help would be appreciated.

We do cover scripting under the perview of this list as a matter of fact.
What your problem is the script that indicates the program name is not
included in your code file or source JSS file. I'll include the code I have
created for note pad some years ago to give you an idea what I am talking
about.

Script ScriptFileName ()

ScriptAndAppNames ("Notepad")

EndScript

Change the word note pad to what ever the program name you are scripting and

assign it to the insert+Q hot key. You'll receive a notice about over
writing the default file and just say yes.

Hi,
I hope that even though this is related to basic scripting that it is ok to
post here. I've seen a few script-related questions here, thus I draw the
conclusion.

The problem is that scripts I've created under Jaws8 or 9 do not seem to
associate with the correct application.
Even after recompiling when pressing JawsKeyPlusQ I hear default.jss and the
name of the application in question.
The scripts work fine, but for the autostart part.
This worked fine in JFW8 and I know I'm missing something.

Hi,
I'm presently trying to change some of my info for my Amazon account using
Webvisum but having no luck.
I have an image above and an edit box below which wants 6 chars. I tried the
hotkeys, can't remember them right off with no luck.
I'm definitely logged in to Webvism.
I've tried both OCR'ing the thing and when in forms mode telling it to solve
the phrase for me.
I find the key bindings dialog under the Webvism preferences to be very
quirky though. Sometimes I can't get my virtual cursor back after looking
through the Webvisum preferences and must reload JFW.
I've looked at their faq, tutorial and the rest.
Any ideas?

[JAWS-Users] Capsha & Amazon anyone

2009-02-05 Thread Jon C. Pierson
Hi,
I'm presently trying to change some of my info for my Amazon account using
Webvisum but having no luck.
Any ideas?

Hi Fina,
Just booted up the 98 machine to make sure where all these things live
because it has been a long time.
Go into ControlPanel, then display.
On the first tab, the backgrounds tab set the wallpaper to none by hitting
the home key in the list.
You probably want to press control plus tab to go to the next tab which is
screensaver and do the same there.
Next go on over to the web tab with a couple more "control plus tabs" and
make sure "view my desktop as a web page" is unchecked.
That should silence the chatter.

[JAWS-Users] My Alva woes solved

2009-02-05 Thread Jon C. Pierson
Hi,
This is rather long but since it may help someone else, I'll explain what I
did with this display.
It turned out to be an Alva Delphi 40 cell after all.
The German in the menue doesn't seem to matter as it works perfectly fine
with Jaws10 after some tinkering.
I didn't have a serial cable with both female ends so I tried a parallel
cable but Jaws only offered com ports when adding a display.
I modified the jfw.ini file replacing auto (which I tried first) with lpt1.
That did the trick.
I do get "the selected port is invalid" message if I look under advanced
braille display options but since I don't want to change the port, I just
continued setting options for the display.
Maybe this will help someone with a similar situation.

Hi Fina,
Have you checked to see that there is no unusual theme loading or that the
desktop is not viewed as a web page?
If those suggestions don't do it then I'd look for an updated display

Actually there is a plugin you can get which will allow older versions of
Office to work on docx files.
Do a search for: " FileFormatConverters.exe" and good luck.

Hi,
Let's see how the German translates, I'll just do this char by char since
most of will be contractions.

A P on the left and 3 blank cells, then:
Th, th, ing, m, m
Then a space and:
Ing, ch, ing, ed, ow, ou

It's all German to me.

believe its posible to do so, when you turn it on what's displayed
after the status cells if any on that unit. mine has 5 status cells
and yours may have only 3. it should show something like this

abt 40 010197

and since you said it show german, the numbers will show different.
i'll take a look at mine and see if there's a way to switch it to
german and back.

Hi,
I recently came into posession of a 40-cell Alva display.
It looks newer than the old abt40 but I can't tell what it is because it

Re: [JAWS-Users] sorting in word 2000

2009-02-04 Thread Jon C. Pierson
Hi,
Don't bother with a table unless you're alphabetizing on some other
character that's not at the beginning of the line.
Going to: Tables menu, sort, paragraph works nicely for this kind of chore.

David,

You would need to put your data into a table. Then you can sort by text.
That would alphabetize your list of names.

[JAWS-Users] USB blocks boot

2009-02-04 Thread Jon C. Pierson
Hi,
I've actually got a couple pc's around here on which I must shut off the
external drive or unplug the usb cable before I am allowed to reboot
successfully. I'm thinking it must be an issue with default boot order as
none of these drives has either an active partition or one that's bootable.
Isn't technology fun?

OK, this sounds serious enough that I'd get someone to look at your screen
when you're starting your computer and see what kind of message pops up. An

external drive should not interfere with the booting up of a computer. And
if it is the boot order as others have suggested, you'll need to have
someone who really knows computers fix this for you. I've just never heard
of a USB port being first in line in the boot, or startup sequence. But
anything is possible.

Howdy. I hope my explination of this problem isn't too confusing, but I'm
finding it hard to move my folders within outlook express, because for some
reason the inbox keeps closing, and in order to move my folders or files to
different folders within, I have to keep opening the inbox. It keeps saying

inbox closed, and that's not happened to me before, until a couple of weeks
ago, and damned if I know how that happened. Your help would be much
appreciated as always. Thanks in advance. Kimmie.

Hello Friends,
You can always paste a messy message you might have received into a Word
.doc file, then just hit Control H, which is "Find and Replace" use the
greater sign to "find", and leave the "Replace" blank.

It will leave the message clean of those messy greater signs, and your
recipients will appreciate it!
I do it with about half the forwarded messages I in turn wish to forward.

It only takes a couple of seconds!

Best Regards,
Alan

Hi,
Another thing to try is in Notepad, hit the alt key, right arrow to format
and uparow. If "word wrap" is not checked, hit the enter key. If it is
checked, press the alt key to leave the menu without changing it.

Hi,
When anything is opened in Notepad Jaws will not read it at all. I can't do
a Select all and copy it to another kind of document, either. All I can do
usually is do a Save As and then open the new doc in another program. I
changed the Open with to open txt files in WordPad but I would like to fix
the Notepad since several programs I have installed open the reports in
Notepad and I can't read them at all.
I am using Jaws 9 with XP on a Dell laptop.
Thanks for any suggestions.

Hi,
You may have to do a repair of Jaws but first (when in OE) open the script
manager with JawsKeyPlusNumRowZero and press control s to see if the scripts
compile, that may fix your problem.

Subject: [JAWS-Users] the error messages

In case anyone knows what might be going on with the error messages I
mentioned, I get a lot of "unknown function call" errors such as when
arrowing up or down in a list of files in Windows Explorer, afterthdeleting
a message in Outlook Express, or after pressing the delete key on a message.
I get these errors when navigating through file lists from the open dialog
in some programs. Often this will cause a Jaws crash.

An FS bulletine talked about this being a problem when running Magic, but I
don't have that.

Any thoughts?

Re: [JAWS-Users] System Trade

2009-01-30 Thread Jon C. Pierson
Hi,
Go to properties for the StartMenu and Taskbar by hitting alt plus enter
while on the start button. Tab through until you get to a checkbox that says
"group similar taskbar buttons" and uncheck it. Tab until you hear "hide
inactive icons" and uncheck that box as well.

Re: [JAWS-Users] WinAmp and Value.

2009-01-28 Thread Jon C. Pierson
Hi,
If you select "Direct sound output" as your driver (control p for Winamp
preferences,, o until you hear output, and tab through the dialog), you can
get better independent control of volumes. In other words, this separates
your Jaws and Winamp playback volumes so that what you do in Winamp does not
affect JFW's volume level.
You can always boost the Winamp volume in the EQ with ~ and decrease it
again with the tab key, assuming the EQ is active (toggle the EQ's on/off
state with n from the EQ window, alt plus g to toggle the EQ window open or
closed).
Control plus tab will cycle among open Winamp windows.
I hope this helps a bit.

That is not the problem. I did so already. I even did it using the value in
the speaker and the only thing went up was jaws.
