and now that I am using windows 8.1 the internet explorer 11 the
internet explorer that is like a search engine the file menu and the

In Windows XP and earlier, you could down arrow, or up arrow thru the
start
menu.
In Windows 7, it is my understanding that the search box is at the top
of

the start menu,
if this is true, why can't I down arrow in the start menu?
It would appear to me that down arrowing would move to the next item in

About three years ago we came close! That was why I stopped trying to
make
TaxAct work each year using old scripts. The program changes every
year,
but FS has never updated their original scripts. My wife hates
computers
and has no patience! Now we go to H R Block and the frustration is
gone!
I just have to forfeit a little of the refund! At least the household
is

peaceful!

I ended up scanning in all of the documents this year anyway. I
wonder if I
could manage to get all of the needed data off the W2s to directly
fill out
the forms on the IRS site. The nice part about H R Block is they
also
fill out the PA state and local taxes. There is no way otherwise to
fill

out the local taxes electronically.

There is no such thing as importing information if you use IRS forms.
You keep your own records, and start out from scratch each year.
You have to know how to fill out the tax forms on your own, to use
this

method, or be willing to read enough to learn.

The biggest thing you need to know is that the Num lock key acts as

We now have another nice choice for this. Jamal Mazrui has developed
version 3.3 of pdf2txt, available completely free, to download, from:

http://EmpowermentZone.com/p2tsetup.exe

and it can also scan image pdf's using Google's Tesseract technology.
There
is more info about it at the site I have given. Once downloaded, you
then
install it, and can read the documentation included. the program is
about
24 mB in total. Some of us will kinow that jamal has also developed
the

Homer scripting library for JAWS, and indeed, is now developing an
accessible Twitter interface (called macTwit with JAWS and any other

Hi Listers,
I am using a fantastic conversion program which makes those graphical
PDF

files empty document Jaws readable. It isn't perfect, but its quite
accurate. It in ternally does a scan and converts the graphical
characters
to Ascii format readable by Jaws. The fully functional program is
quite
inexpensive (about thirteen dollars). The free version demonstrates
its many

capabilities. Check it out, you will be amazed.

Hello all,
JAWS has a feature to improve support in edit and rich edit controls.
This
can be found in Configuration Manager, in the text processing
dialogue. By

default it is unchecked, and I think FS should have this turned on by
default in default.jcf. What do you think? Do check this feature out
as you

may find that edit controls will be more responsive and accurate.

Perhaps this should be brought to the attention of Freedom Scientific.
I in fact did state that the languages option was removed since FS
started to use Windows Installer technology to deploy JAWS, which
started with JAWS 7.1. It's never been reinstated since.

there is ten languages located in the synthesizer language submenu.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Seeking Tips for Using JAWS with a Braille Display

2008-03-03 Thread Mike Wagoner
Hi,
I can't answer all your questions about Braille displays but I use one
at work in combination with speech. I use it primarily to read to
people on the phone, and input information that needs to be specifically
entered in to certain boxes on the screen. It is critical when
inputting information to place the data in the correct space for the
computer program to except it as correct. I occasionally use the
buttons on the handy-tech star Braille 80 as a mouse click because it is
much quicker and more convenient. I don't use it as a separate
notetaker because for me it is not quick enough to switch modes while
dealing with the public. I look at the Braille display as a very
helpful addition to speech but rarely use it independently. Hope this
helps.

Subject: [JAWS-Users] Seeking Tips for Using JAWS with a Braille Display

Hello all. I've attained the use of a braille display for a couple
 weeks
as an evaluation toward a likely purchase of one. I want to be sure to
get the full experience of using a braille display before having to
 give
this on back, so hope that the braille display users among you can
provide me some guidance as to features that you do or don't use of
 your
braille display and screen reader combo. I've thrown some questions
 out
to guide your thoughts, but I'm surely not limited to these questions
 in
terms of the feedback I'd find helpful. Thanks in advance for your
 help,
and I look forward to reading your responses.
How do you use your braille display? For what tasks would you not want
to live without your braille display? For what tasks is it less than
 desirable and why?
Do you primarily use it for proofreading, screen access, replacement
 for
speech, access to text only, or some combination of these?
Do you use its ability to input text? If so, is that your primary, or
even your sole, means of interaction with your PC?
How much customization of the display's key commands do you do?
Do you use your screen reader's ability to output in grade II? How
 often?
Do you browse the web using braille, and if so, do you read text with
braille and navigate with speech, use braille for both, or some other
 combination?
If you use braille to browse the web for text or navigation, do you
encounter situations where content on the web is difficult to access
using braille alone? If so, what problems do you encounter?

Once more, thanks tremendously for your thoughts and feedback, and
 feel
free to write me privately with any of this information if you like.

 Very gratefully,

 Jeremiah Z. Rogers

 Hi:
I had this tutorial on my computer, not really sure how long, but
maybe it can help. I will paste it below just incase you can get some
 help from it.
Creating Accessible Forms in MS Word

 Introduction
With the instructions below, you will be able to develop easy-to-use
forms. There are several advantages to developing your forms using the
 Forms tool provided
 by Word:
 List of 4 items
. You will develop the forms once, but they will be usable over and
 over again.
. If you ever need to change/add/remove anything from a form you've
already developed, you can make that change in moments without having
 to re-create the
 whole form.
. Since the forms will be protected, people filling them out will only
be able to type in the appropriate fields, ensuring that the forms
 will print out
 properly every time.
. The Add-Help Text that appears each time you tab onto a field makes
these forms readily accessible by a blind person using JAWS.
 list end

 Set-up

To create a form in Word, you use the Forms toolbar. Since this is not
among the standard toolbars visible when you first launch Word, you
 need to bring
up the Forms toolbar. To do this go to the View menu on the standard
menu bar, then choose the Toolbars submenu, and down arrow to Forms.
 Press ENTER on
this item to check it and close the menus.

 Laying out the Form Content

Your form may have a lot of text that is not directly related to
entering data. This may include instructions on how to fill out the
 form, headings, disclaimers,
etc. Type in or copy/paste all of the text that needs to appear on the
printed form, formatting it as appropriate. The edit fields that
 people move to
in order to fill in data will be put onto the form for you when you
use the options on the Forms toolbar. This will ensure that users only
 type in the
right places on the form. (The sample below shows the form context
without the edit areas and checkboxes.)

 Sample form 1
 Personal Contact Information
 First Name: Last Name:
 Street address:
 City: State: Zip:
 Personal Information
 SSN: DOB: Sex: Male Female
 U.S. citizen: Yes No

Creating an Accessible Text Edit field

A form field is the space a person filling out the form uses to type
in text or response to a question on the form. Usually, a highlighted
 area provides
a visual marker to show where to fill in this text. To create an
accessible text edit field, do the following:
 List of 8 items
 1. Place your cursor at the beginning of the space where you expect a
person to start filling in text. This is usually, but not always, just
 to the right
of the question on the form.
 2. Press ALT to move to the menu bar item File.
 3. Press CTRL+TAB until you move to the forms toolbar. JAWS will say
 Edit box button.
 4. Press ENTER. An edit box appears at your cursor location. (Mouse
users, point and click on the first button of the toolbar.)
 5. Go back to the forms toolbar and choose the Form Fields Options
button. (JAWS says Properties button.) This brings up a dialog that
 lets you change
various aspects of the edit box you just created. For example, you can
set default text to appear in a field or you can limit the number of
 characters
users can type in the edit field. In fact, if you do this, it
guarantees that users won't type more than you need them to type. For
 example, limit the
edit field for State to 2 characters so that users can only fill in a
two-letter state abbreviation. If your cursor is at the beginning of
 or in the middle
of the edit field you can also press your Applications key to open a
context menu. Then you can choose Properties from that menu.
 6. Press ALT+T (or click on it) to activate the Add Help Text button.
This brings up a multi page dialog that lets you add a meaningful
 prompt or tool tip
for the person filling out the form. You land on the Status Bar page
 tab.
 7. Press ALT+T or TAB three times to move to the edit area for adding
your own text, the third radio button called Type Your Own Text. The
 text you enter
on here will be visible on the Word status bar and will also be read
to a blind person using JAWS. In most cases, simply type in the same
 question that
is printed on the form. So if the form reads First name: type first
name (with minimal punctuation and no quotation marks).
 8. TAB to or click on the OK button to exit the Add Help Text dialog,
and again to exit the Text Form Field Options dialog. You will be
 placed back in your
edit field in the original document.
 list end
 List of 2 items
. If the question on the form is very wordy, you can copy and paste
 its text into the Type

[JAWS-Users] number pad

2007-06-28 Thread Mike Wagoner
Hi all,
thanks for the info on the number pad. I use it almost all day at work and
find it much faster than using the row of number keys. When entering a long
string of numbers, I find it much faster than the number row.

[JAWS-Users] I Did It!

2007-06-28 Thread Mike Wagoner
CONGRATULATIONS,
You were successful. For me trying things is the best way to learn. While we
all have made mistakes, it's still well worth the effort.

Re: [JAWS-Users] An intro and a question

2007-06-09 Thread Mike Wagoner
Hi Liz,
It may be a shot in the dark but have you tried maximizing the current
window? Just a thought.

Yeah, I honestly have no idea what the issue is, but it's driving me
slightly crazy. I've never seen it before, either. I guess if all else
fails, I could try taking it far enough back in system restore and see
 if
that does anything, although I'm always slightly leery of system
 restore,
even though it says it doesn't harm anything.
