[JAWS-Users] FW: Survey for Improving Text-Equivalent Descriptions for the Blind - Distributed with Permission from the Texas Tech Institutional Review Board

2013-12-05 Thread Reinhard Stebner
From: Broyles, Cristopher (OS/ASPA) (CTR)
Sent: Thursday, December 05, 2013 11:11 AM

Hello,

If you use screen‑reader software, are blind, are at least 18 years of age, and
if you have an interest in helping to improve the quality and consistency in
text-based descriptions for the blind (such as alt-text/long descriptions), I
would very much like to include your opinions in my dissertation study. My
study focuses on improving text-based descriptions for the blind. The survey
consists of 12 questions and is designed to be completed in less than 15
minutes. It has also been tested to ensure screen‑reader compatibility and
keyboard-based navigation.

The survey can be completed anonymously, and you will not receive any follow-up
contact from me—or anyone—about the survey or your responses. However, for
those who indicate that it is okay to do so via their survey responses, please
note that I am planning to conduct follow-up one-on-one interviews (30 to 60
minutes) and a group teleconference about improving text-based descriptions (60
to 90 minutes). If you have an interest in participating in that conference
call, please be sure to provide contact information where requested in the
survey. Compensation in the amount of $15.00 will be provided in the form of an
Amazon gift card (or other like retailer) to those who participate in the
individual interview. Due to technical limitations, not everyone can be invited
to participate in the group teleconference. For those who do participate in the
teleconference, additional compensation of $25.00 will be offered through gift
card.
If you have any questions about the survey, its aim and potential use, or my
dissertation, please contact me. Your participation is completely voluntary and
all information gathered will be used exclusively for my research. This survey
has been approved by the TTU Institutional Review Board.
Please feel free to forward this survey link onward to other individuals you
think might have an interest in participating.

Here is the link to the survey: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/SZXHYH3 .

Respectfully,
Cristopher Broyles, Doctoral Candidate

Subject: [JAWS-Users] JAWS And T.V. Tuners

Hi friends,

has anyone managed to find a free software application for accessing digital
usb or PCI t.v. tuners that works well with JAWS please?

There seems to be a real gap in products available here.

I have a Microsoft Windows Vista Business laptop that unfortunately, doesn't
come with Microsoft Windows Media Centre so I am a bit stuck and as far as I
can tell, the tuner software is not accessible at all.

Take care all,

Steve.

[JAWS-Users] cd burner that works well with JAWS

2012-05-12 Thread Reinhard Stebner
I am looking for a cd burner that will allow me to burn mp3 files to an
audio cd. I am looking for something that is shareware, with no adds and is
accessible. If I need to buy the software first, this is okay as well. Thank
you for your help.

Re: [JAWS-Users] How do I customize keystroke combo to shut JAWS without the prompt asking me if I'm sure?

2012-03-09 Thread Reinhard Stebner
The keystroke you are looking for is JAWS key + windows key + f4. Use this
key is JAWS is not responding correctly.

In the past I have used such a keystroke, but cannot remember what it was
and if it is still available. It was something like insert control windows
key and F4. Or something like that. I thought it was called something like

kill jaws because it forced jaws to close and made a funny little sound when

it worked. I also would like to know if this feature is still available and

if so, just what it might be.

hello,

there is a keystroke combo that shuts off JAWS forcefully without prompting
the user. this is quite handy when something is going on on the PC and JAWS

is either not responding or acting funny. then there is a way to go in and
change this keystroke combo to something more ergonomic like say, ctrl
windows-key alt J.

Thx!

Hi Jack,
You obtain a bootable cd, create an iso of that and add the .sif file to
your i386 folder using a tool which will let you edit the iso file and then
burn that back to a cd, giving you a bootable cd on which windows will find
the answer automatically.
The only thing is to catch that "press any key to boot from cd" message as
it comes up on-screen by hitting the spacebar repeatedly when you start the
machine, then your off to the races.
If the bios isn't set to boot from cd first then you need a flopp with the
answer filey

Once you fill in all the information that's appropriate for your computer,

[JAWS-Users] remembering different information with scripts was RE: jfw scripts for cheating on exams for school jaws-users!

2007-10-28 Thread Reinhard Stebner
I like the idea of remember differnat info using jfw sdripts. Do you know
if there is a way to dynamically intert items in to keybord short cuts? I
am thinking of doing this for a programming assignment where I have problems
remembering what is in each var at a time. I can rmemeber numbers much
better then names. My idea is that while walking through a piece of code
that one would place info in a var assigen to a script and use it when I
need to remember it aain leter in the program.

Subject: [JAWS-Users] jfw scripts for cheating on exams for school
jaws-users!

Hello everyone.
I have made a set of scripts for cheating on exams/test. The scripts
work like this. When you press one of the different hotkeys to give an
answer, control 1 through 7, control shift 1 to control shift 7,
control f1 through f12 and control shift f1 through f12, once or twice
quickly, jaws will speak a different answer without showing anything
on the screen. I have been using these for 2 years now, and never got
caught. Mine are for wordpad , but they can be used with any other
application by just renaming the files to the application we want. The
scripts give more than 70 answers, and what I usually do is grab my
notes file, copy one line, paste it, press backspace and space bar so
there is no line break between a sentence and another because if
there's a break the script will will show a compile error message. You
can put in as much information as you want in each hot key slot, but
it can get tedious to get through a lot of information from just one
key, so what I do is put different small bits of information in the
different keys. I never used up all of my keys, but if anyone needs
more slots, just tell me and I will definetly do something about it.
if anyone is interested in using these scripts, contact me off list.

Postscriptum: If someone has a better way to copy the notes to the
script, like using an ini file, please contact me. I've been trying to
do this but never figured it out. Thanks!

Eric--

I continue to be frustrated by Jaws 8.0 (plus updates) and the Jaws 9 Beta's
inability to read many e-mails in Outlook 2007. This appears to be
primarily a problem for html e-mails in table format. Jaws reads the table
row and column numbers but not the text; sometimes it will read the standard
"boilerplate" regarding how to request removal from a list but not the
substantive content. Also, I find that Jaws 9 does not read even the table
format information in "say all" mode. On my laptop. I am hoping these
problems can be addressed as they were not probles in Jaws 7.1. Thank
you.Chris Bell

Well, I guess I blew this one.

It has been a long week. This message was sent in error to the JAWS users
list instead of the Freedom Scientific Private Beta List. I apologize.
Please disregard and do not ask about the where the file is now or how to
get this update, we have removed them from these locations.

We will be getting a new public beta update out once we complete work and
testing on the next round of fixes over the next 10 days.

Hello Private Beta Testers,

JAWS Private Beta Build 9.0.356 is ready for testing. This one includes
quite a bit of change since the 353 build because we have been fixing items
that were held out of the public beta builds as we attempted to stabilize it
as best we could. The next update we do for the public will be in about 10
days or so I hope. Your attention to this list of fixes is greatly
appreciated.

The Known issues is empty today. Rosemary and Stephen are both off sipping
Margaritas somewhere so we are not as professional in the write up as we'd
like to be.

Special note: The Red Sox are going for game two tonight at 8:30 ET and the
Yankees will be going for their second loss on Saturday!

 Regards,

Eric

JAWS Private Beta Build 9.0.356 is ready for testing.

JAWS 9.0 Update

An update is provided for your convenience as well as to continue with some
level of testing of the update process during the beta cycle. Not all builds
provided during the beta cycle will have the update option. As the product
progresses, some builds will be new BASE BUILDS upon which subsequent
updates can be installed. The Automatic Update will update to JAWS 9.0.356
from the following prior builds:

* 9.0.353 Base Build or Update.

*   9.0.348 Base Build.

Attempts to update to 9.0.356 from any build other than what is listed will
fail by design. If in doubt or you have trouble, simply use the full install
instead. Updates are not yet available for Windows Vista, and are not
available for Windows 2000; you need to download and install the full
version.

* Update Patch:

1. Please enter 90909 into the special code dialog in the JAWS about
box dialog. Go to the Help Menu, About. TAB to the special access code
button and press ENTER. Type or paste 90909 into the edit field.
2. Select check for updates on the JAWS UI help menu. You will find
today's 9.0.356 in the list box.
3. TAB to your choice and proceed with installation.

* Update Tip: How do you check to see if a listed update will update my
installed version of JAWS?

If you navigate the list of updates and highlight one of the listed updates
you can TAB to the detail button and press spacebar to get a list of the
versions of JAWS which can be updated by that particular update.

* If the Update fails:

Either Repair or install the full build, if available: Check out the FAQ:
How do I perform Installation Maintenance procedures like Repair and Modify?

NOTES

*   JAWS 9.0 beta will expire December 1, 2007.
* For those who are testing the Outlook Calendar work: to test the
calendar, you need to disable the Task List option in View, To Do, menu.
ALT+V to drop the View menu, then select the To Do Bar sub menu,
then uncheck the Task List option.
* MAGic and JAWS private beta testers: We are working on testing a
combination here in-house, and on getting you a new MAGic 11 Public beta
candidate, that will function with the JAWS public beta. While you are free
to install both JAWS 9.0 beta and MAGic
