[JAWS-Users] latest JAWS update, should I download it?

2012-08-05 Thread Steve Crews
Hello, I know that there is a JAWS update that I haven't downloaded yet.

I have noticed from emails on the list that there are some problems with it.

Have these problems been worked out or should I wait for corrections to be
made before I download the latest update?

I am not having any trouble with the current version I am using, JAWS 13
with updates upto the current one.

So, I guess my question is, should I wait to update JAWS?

Thanks

Re: [JAWS-Users] JAWS and ZoomText?

2012-04-19 Thread Steve Crews
Hello, I use Zoomtext for color enhancement and magnification and JAWS for
speech. It works great for me.
If you have Windows 7, Zoomtext has to start before JAWS. So, I have
Zoomtext come on at start up and then I have JAWS in the start menu.
So, after Zoomtext is loaded, I press the windows key plus the letter J and
Jaws starts up.
I hope this helps.

Re: [JAWS-Users] saving a picture that comes as an attachment

2012-03-21 Thread Steve Crews
Hi Trish, I am using Outlook but I think OE works about the same.
After I open the email, I shift+ tab which moves the cursor up to the
attachment line.
I then right arrow and JAWS should speak the name of the attachment.
I then hit the application key and arrow to copy.
Press enter on Copy.
The picture is now on the clip board and you can paste it into whatever
folder you want.
After placing it where you want, you can press the application key again for
a list of options where you can select from a list of things to do with the
file.
I usually place any pictures in the My Pictures folder, where I rename the
picture if needed.

 I hope thisworks for you.

Re: [JAWS-Users] How to get information about jaws that is useable to me

2012-02-02 Thread Steve Crews
Hi, the JAWS installation disc should have FS reader as well as some
training material. If it didn't get installed for some reason, I think I
would uninstall JAWS and start over with a complete reinstall.
Although the training material on the installation may have updates
available, it should still be applicable and help until you can figure out
why you can't download any new updates.

Miriam,
Here are step by step instructions for using the FS Reader, Version 2 which
should have installed in your system if you loaded Jaws 12 or 13.

1. Go to your Desktop.
2. Press the letter F to use First Letter Navigation and locate a link
called FS READER 2.0
3. Press Enter to open the FS Reader program.
4. You will now be on a blank menu because nothing has yet been called up.
5. Press Control O to open Fs Reader's search module.
6. Shift Tab and your cursor should be on a list of built in training
files.
7. Choose one of the files by lining up on it and pressing Enter.
8. You will now be able to read that the file has been prepared for
reading. The name will be highlighted on your screen.
9. To start Fs Reader, press control P for Play or Pause.
10. To pause the reading, press Control P, again.

Miriam, this will get you started. There are many other controls you can
use to advance through the file, speed up or slow down the reading and so
on.
In answer to your earlier question, the files read by the Fs Reader in this
manner are recordings of an actual voice.
If you have loaded all of the training files when you installed Jaws,
everything you need should be there in one of those files.
I hope this helps.

I managed to scan an image from within a Microsoft Word document onces and

Does anyone have a list of the key strokes, I am pretty sure it is

[JAWS-Users] JAWS 13 and Research function

2011-12-07 Thread Steve Crews
Hello,

I just installed JAWS 13 and updates.

When I press

JAWS key zero key on num pad withnum lock off

Instead of going to the research windo, JAWS gives me some instructions

AS I do use the researchs functions from time to time, I would like to find

This is the process I used in an earlier version of JAWS and it worked fine.

Any help would be appreciated.

Re: [JAWS-Users] greater sign in emails

2009-11-12 Thread Steve Crews
Hello, I opened the dictionary manager while in Outlook.
I think the change was only made when using Outlook.
I don't think any other programs were effected by the change.
Thanks,
Steve

If I didn't warn the original sender about that, I should have. You are
correct, Gerald, of course.
Once a character has been defined in that manner it stays silent in all
applications.
I suppose you could create the dictionary exception for the e-mail client
only. That might be a working alternative. In that case, ignore the
comment about activating the default dictionary. Open Outlook Express
Then go to Jaws using Jaws key plus J. Then activate the dictionary file
and define the symbol as indicated in my earlier message.
Thanks again for the caviat Gerald.

Your first technique for suppressing the announcement of the symbol is
not a good idea, because it will be suppressed in all applications, not
just email. So, for example, if you happen to encounter a Word document
that contains the symbol, JAWS will treat it as a space and not announce

it, which is probably not what you want. The JAWS Dictionary Manager is
global, so applying changes to the symbol will affect all applications.

A couple of ways, Steve. You can define the symbol in your dictionary
like this.

 1. Press Insert D to open the dictionary:
 2. Press Control Shift D to open the default dictionary.
 3. Tab to the Add button and press Enter.
 4. Type the character in that space.
 5. Tab to the next field and press the space bar.
You won't hear another when you read e-mails that have been extended.
That's why they're there by the way. To tell you that you are reading a
part of the e-mail which has been forwarded.

The second method is to use something like ECleaner to remove the
 symbols.
But you'll need to load that program first. It works quite well and it's

 simple to use.
 I think it's on David's programs page.

Steve,

Go to the dictionary manager (insert key + D)
click on the add button
type in the sign
tab once and replace with a space
hit ctrl S to save and exit

This is from memory so will be close if not exactly on

Subject: [JAWS-Users] Audio question

Hi all.
I have XP home and 10.0
I am looking for some basic tutorials on how to burn, copy, download, etc.
music.
There seems to be a ton of information and products out there.
I noticed the myriad of programs on the JAWS list.
My sighted wife is a pre novice with tech. information.
It was a laborious task just to copy a CD to another blank disc.

We figured it out using the MP player on our Dell.
I am familiar with terms like copy and paste, but then I hear rip and burn.
My goal is to be able to get music on to a CD or MP3 then listen to it on
the proper player, either home system or portable player.
How can I learn the terminology, and skills to do this?
Again, I really need to know the basics.
I know one can download songs, or albums as well as set up files with out
using too much memory.

Thank you for any help.

Rich

I am just trying to learn how to use Winamp. Any advice would be

Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] Winamp and WMP 11

I think it is just a personal preference. I have used Winamp for years and
it is what I have grown accustomed to using. WMP is a good media player and
if it does what you need it to do, then by all means keep using it.
I do find that it is easier to set up play lists in Winamp though. Also I
like being able to create bookmarks within a file easily in Winamp.
I also like being able to skip forward or back in 5 second intervals in
Winamp not to mention the ability to jump to any point within a file.
You can probably do all of these things using WMP, but I'm not totally sure
about that.

Subject: [JAWS-Users] Winamp and WMP 11

Hi,

I have been looking at just about every version of winamp over the last week
or so. I used to use Winamp several years ago but when I purchased a new
Laptop I tried using WMP 11 and have found it very good.

Please can somebody explain to me what I am missing by not using Winamp!

I do realise that it all depends on what you wish to do with your player and
that most of you will just think, Oh well whatever works for you but in my
case, Rippping, Burning using a Library, creating Play lists etc all are
very accessible using WMP but to be honest although I have had some success
with Winamp versions which includes using down loaded scripts from the site,
I am coming to the conclusion that WMP 11 is the thing to use.

Please tell me why most of you prefer Winamp and why you may think it is
better than the standard Windows Player.

Look forward to hearing your comments.

regards

Graham

Re: [JAWS-Users] routing jaws to pc

2008-01-17 Thread Steve Crews
I don't use either exclusively, but at times I do use a combination of the
two. It just seems to work out better for me under some circumstances. And
I'm probably not doing it in the most efficient way possible.
Again, I haven't been using jaws very long and I am probably just blundering
thru.
Thanks.

Hi,

Why would you use the jaws cursor to navigate pages? I've used the pc
cursor but am curious why you use the jaws one.

Marilyn, I mainly use the JAWS cursor for navigating thru web pages. And
use the PC cursor for reading emails and documents. But I haven't been
using JAWS very long and I am sure that there are others on this list that
can give you a better explanation of the difference between the two and how
to get the most benefit out of each.

Steve, it sounds as if I always have the keyboard set up as jaws key and pc
key so maybe I am makiing a problem that does not exist. I hit the jaws
cursor key and things read but I can't do anything with them. If I hit the
pc cursor key, nothing reads so I can't do anything. This is why I never
did get adaware going under my control. oDoes this make sense? marilyn

1. open address book.

2. press alt. go to file menu.

3. Add a contact, is first item under file menu. Press enter on add a

4. After completing Name page press control +tab, to go to the home info

can press enter on OK or press control + tab to go to the business info

There are several info pages: including, NAME, HOME, BUSINESS, PERSONNAL,
AND OTHER.

Hope this helps.

I've tried hitting the tab and control tab to see if there is a place to

Rich, Sorry about that. Don't know what the difference is but NEW CONTACT
is the first item under the file menu in my ADDRESS BOOK program. But
anyway, did the rest of the info seem to work out for you?

Hello, I don't use Quick Books, But I have used other quicken software. I
have found these to work well with jaws. I think most of the Quicken
software is available on a demo basis. You might want to check it out for a
trial period.
