[JAWS-Users] Update On Outlook 2016 E-mail Attachment Issue
Hello, everyone. I just installed the latest build of Jaws 2018-version 1805.33, and I am now able to attach documents to an e-mail at least some of the time. What I mean is that the process works, but not consistently. I have tried the various suggestions I have been given for attaching files, and they all seem to work at least most of the time. However, there still are some times when Outlook e-mail completely crashes, irrespective of the attachment method I use. My next steps will likely be to see what happens with either NVDA or Narrator to help determine if this is a Jaws issue. Will keep everyone posted. Once again, I'm using Outlook 2016 with Office 365 here, along with Jaws 2018 on this windows 7 computer. If you haven't added nor removed anything from the Quick Access Toolbar for the message editing window the High Importance button should be the fourth item, so it would be assigned to ALT+4. Since ALT+NUMBER keystrokes are assigned in JAWS for reading Outlook message headers, you will have to press JAWS+3 before using the abobe mentioned keystroke. It was providing addresses that had nothing to do with the first few letters. He told me that in order to rebuild it, I should write in the first few letters and then press control K which would bring up a list of relevant addresses. I should arrow down to the correct address and press enter. That address would then be filled in and would be part of my reconstruction of auto complete. So I was trying to send an email to the blind democracy list. I found the correct address. However, even though I followed his directions, auto complete filled in a different address which belonged to someone who used "blind" and his first name and whose address was in the list. Finally, I went to a word document where I'd stored the blind democracy address and copied and pasted it into the to field. The next time I tried to use auto complete for the blind democracy list, the correct address was filled in, but Jaws didn't read it until I pressed enter. The Jaws users name was filled in but again, Jaws didn't read it the way it normally does. I think I had to press enter or manually read the line. So it seems to me that Jaws isn't working properly with auto complete or auto complete isn't working properly or something. At least, it works in Outlook 2010, and I believe I once tested this on 2016 at work, too. Enter in the first few letters of the recipient. For example, for this list, I might type in "jaws". Write your message and use your send command. If there's more than one address that matches the criteria of what you entered, a list of matches will pop up before you send the message, and you can select the one that applies. Not sure if this will really help you, but I notice that people often seem to have issues with JAWS and auto-complete, in that they don't know when an address has been filled out. -Original Message- From: JAWS-Users-List [mailto:jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of Miriam Vieni Sent: April 23, 2018 9:37 PM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] Microsoft Level 2 Well George, Here's my latest report. For Disc Cleanup, start typing "disc" into the field, pause, and then arrow down once. The disc cleanup option comes up and you just press enter. To get into the disc cleanup window, press alt-tab once. I suggest having all other programs closed. It can take a minute or so. Once done, JAWS will start talking, and you'll be presented with a vertical checklist of items to include in the cleanup. Make your selections, then tab to Okay, then again to confirm. I haven't done a defrag in a while, but I just checked that it comes up right away in the Windows search field. Re: [JAWS-Users] Serious Problem Since Doing Latest Jaws 2018 Update
Leonard: I should have been clearer about a few points in my earlier update. I did try Narrator and NVDA, and experienced the same sluggishness and speaker static issues. I also experienced them with earlier versions of Jaws. Fortunately, I've been working on things now for about a half hour, and everything seems to be back to normal. Not sure why checking the control sound configurations and re-doing the docking station interface could have solved the problem, but I seem to be ok once again. Re: [JAWS-Users] Serious Problem Since Doing Latest Jaws 2018 Update
Well, you might be right. I had some sighted assistance a little while ago. We went into the control panel and checked on a few of the sound card settings. After that, things improved slightly. Then, I took the computer out of the docking station I use, and put it back in. Now the computer seems to be functioning much more normally. Don't know what might have happened. All I know is that the problems I had earlier occurred after the latest Jaws update. Whether or not the update is truly related to what I experienced is still unclear to me. Perhaps the update temporarily messed with some sound card or other configurations. Re: [JAWS-Users] Making a keyboard shortcut for restarting JAWS
Matt: We typically use the shortcut command Alt Control J. If you can find Jaws listed as a program on your desktop or in your start menu, then hit the applications key, and use your arrow keys until you find properties. Hit enter on properties, and hopefully, you'll be at the shortcut page. By tabbing through the list of options, you'll find a place to enter that shortcut key. You may have to hit apply and ultimately ok, but once the shortcut is saved, you then should be able to start Jaws with that shortcut command if needed. You can also set Jaws to start automatically when your computer boots, but that may be going beyond what you are asking here. [JAWS-Users] Additional Note Regarding Outlook Chrashing Issue When Entering E-mail Addresses Into A New E-mail
Hello, everyone. Yesterday, you may recall that I was told by Freedom Scientific Tech Support that the best way to solve the issue of Outlook Crashing when entering addresses into the "to" field of a new e-mail message was to put Outlook in safe mode. This is continuing to work for me, although I must add that if you shut your computer down for any reason, you will have to go back into Outlook and put it back into safe mode. Apparently, the safe mode setting isn't saved, as I have just discovered. Dr. Tom Behler from Michigan For answers to frequently asked questions about this list visit: http://www.jaws-users.com/help/
Re: [JAWS-Users] Outlook Crashing Issue When Entering E-mail Addresses Solved, at least for now
Miriam: Outlook should remain in safe mode if you shut down, and then re-start your computer. At least it has done this for me at least so far. However, I have a Braille set of instructions right here to put things back in safe mode if the problem recurs. I sure hope FS provides an update to fix this issue at some point, because I am certain that others are struggling with it as well. Earlier today, I turned off my computer. Windows updates appeared automatically and I suddenly discovered that I couldn't send any emails because every time I tried to enter an address, Outlook crashed and Jaws stopped working. I just used your directions and tried to enter an address and nothing crashed. So I'm grateful. I don't understand what safe mode is or if Outlook will stay in this mode if I turn off my computer, however. I wanted to let you know that my Outlook 2016 address entry issue which was causing Outlook to crash has been resolved, at least for now. I worked with Corrie from FS Support, and they are aware of the issue. The temporary work-around is to run Outlook in safe mode. Here are the steps for doing this: 1. If you are in Outlook, close the program. 2. Then, press windows R to go to the run dialog prompt. 3. Type in outlook.exe followed by a space, and then /safe and hit enter. 4. Then, exit out of Outlook and go back again, and everything should function normally. I'm not totally sure what safe mode is, but Corrie said it has something to do with eliminating add-ins that are active when Outlook is running normally. I also asked Corrie about the problem I'm having with being unable to navigate entries in an Outlook e-mail group via the arrow keys, and he said that FS is aware of that issue as well. He indicated that we should all stand by for future Jaws updates that will be aimed at correcting these issues. David: I'm currently using the 64-bit version of Jaws version 18.0.4350. My computer here is a 64-bit machine. My next step will indeed be to download the latest version of Jaws 2018, to see if that corrects the issue. I'm also going to try Outlook with NVDA. Other steps that have been suggested include running Jaws in user default mode; doing a Jaws repair, and checking Outlook accessibility settings. When I get some uninterrupted time here, I'll try these various steps, probably in the order noted above, to see if I can correct the situation. Has anyone recently experienced this issue, and if so, have you found a fix? I am eligible to upgrade to Jaws 2018, and will do so when I get the chance. However, in the meantime, I'd like to be able to quickly originate e-mails in the usual way if at all possible. [JAWS-Users] Still Unable To Navigate An E-mail Group In Outlook 2016 after latest Jaws Update
Hello again, everyone. As I reported earlier, I just updated my Windows 7 laptop here to Jaws 18.0.4350. I was hoping the update would solve a problem that I have been experienceing with e-mail groups in Outlook 2016. Basically, for the past few months, I have found myself unable to navigate the names in an Outlook 2016 e-mail group via the up and down arrow keys. I used to be able to do this with no problem. Now, it is very difficult to determine exactly who is in an e-mail group, which, of course, leads to difficulties when trying to update or edit the group. Has anyone else experienced this issue, and if so, have you found a fix for it? Again, I'm using Jaws 18.0.4350 with Windows 7 and (Outlook 2016. Hello, everyone. I just updated my Jaws 18 here to the latest Jaws 18 build-version 18.0.4350. On my desktop, I now have two Jaws icons. One simply says Jaws, and the other says Jaws 18.0. Is this normal? If I wanted to eliminate one of these icons, which one would it be, or should I just leave well enough alone? Thanks for any suggestions. Paste the OneDrive link into the email, this will give that person a link to access the folder you are sharing with them. What does it mean to sink your OneDrive folders? When you choose to sink your OneDrive folders on your computer. You have a mirror copy of these files online, on your OneDrive page. You also place a mirror copy of these files in your OneDrive folder on your computer. Now, the advantage of doing it this way is: When you are inside the OneDrive folder and inside a text file in one of your shared folders, for example. Whatever changes you make to that text document on your computer, are automatically changed in the text document stored in OneDrive on line. Can I use the default folders of OneDrive, to place my audio or text files into for back up, or for sharing with others? Yes, you can use them the same way, as I explained above. OneDrive is a cool and easy way, to share large audio or text files with others. Microsoft gives each person a free 5 GB's of storage space on OneDrive. *Tip, when you sink folders, you are taking up room in your OneDrive folder, what ever the size of the one drive folder on line is also taking up room on your C: drive as a mirror copy. We have never had a problem with GMail before but they sure made up for it this morning. If anybody has contact with one of the people who have been removed ask them to contact GMail if they can and ask this domain be placed on their white list or whatever they happen to call it. Miriam: If all else fails, and if you aren't comfortable trying the more complicated suggestions that have been offered here, you might want to call Freedom Scientific about the issue. I believe they are aware of the problem, and the more people they hear from who have experienced the issue, the better that will be, in my opinion. For reasons that I don't quite understand, I have not experienced this problem very much any more, after updating to the latest build of Jaws 18, and after renewing my Office 365 subscription. This doesn't mean that I won't experience the problem again, though, so I'm knocking on wood here as I write this. Regarding the spell check when using Word 2016, I do agree that the ability to access the functions via the tab key is quite convenient. Adrian: To summarize where I am so far with the hyperlinks issue, it now looks like your suggested strategy for creating and opening hyperlinks in an e-mail do work. Not sure why the change from the other day. I also successfully used the control K command to force the creation of a hyperlink in an e-mail, and that seems to have worked as well. Not sure what has changed, other than the fact that I confirmed the suggested settings for reading e-mail in non-text format, and composing e-mail in HTML format. I'll keep these instructions for future reference. Thanks to all for your patience with this issue. I'm not sure how and why things sometimes change in Outlook settings. Use up or down arrow key and find the Mail Security item. Tab and make sure the checkbox "Read all standard mail in plain text" is not checked. Ok David. Here's what's really interesting. In your last message, you said: For example, With pressing enter you get, http://www.jaws-users.com/help without pressing enter you get, http://www.jaws-users.com/help In my Outlook, both links read identically. In other words, there's no hyperlink designation with either example; just the raw text of the link. I believe Miriam made this suggestion yesterday, and I've been doing it for a long time. Links are not shown as links without the return character at the end. When trying to open a link, right-arrow over the link's first character before pressing enter. I've found that Outlook fluctuates between this extra step being needed and not needed, though why it should be is beyond me. Rick: My e-mail is set to display in HTML format. Still no hyperlinks. Tom Behler -Original Message- From: JAWS-Users-List [mailto:jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of Rick Ely Sent: Monday, July 03, 2017 3:09 PM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] Need To Re-enable Hyperlinks In Outlook E-mail Tom, Here is how to check on the format that your Outlook is using when creating email and how to change it if you want. I believe it also changes how incoming messages are displayed, but I can't confirm that. In outlook go to the File menu by pressing Alt _+ f. Arrow down to options and press Enter. Arrow down to Mail and press tab Arrow Down once and you will find a combo box that displays what format Outlook is currently using to compose messages. Arrow down in the combo box and three buttons will be available. They are plain text, Rich Text and HTML Arrow down to the format and press the enter key on the button of the format you want To confirm this change, you need to press the OK button at the very bottom of this list. You are still in a very long list of options. You can tab through all of these to get to the OK button. However, from where you are it is easier to go backwards through the items. Hold down your shift key and press tab until you hear OK. Release the shift key and press enter on that OK button. If you feel like you made a mistake in this menu, worry not. Hit the Escape key and the menu will vanish and no changes will be made. You will just have to start over. Note, my setting here was Rich Text and I had no issues with activating an HTML that was part of a message I was reading. In terms of inserting an HTML link, I usually just cut and paste these, but they do appear as active links to me and to the reader on the receiving end. so I can't confirm the typing method you described. Let us know if that works for you and which text option you selected. Adrian: I couldn't get to the HTML formatting option via Alt O, followed by t and H in a new message, forwarded message, or in a reply. However, I eventually did find the HTML button in the format menu itself. I have activated this, and was told that the HTML button was pressed, but hyperlinks are still not showing up. Again, I'm using Outlook 2016, and Jaws 18 with Windows 7 here. Re: [JAWS-Users] FireFox Crash Reporter.
Jared and all: I currently am using Firefox version 52.032. I typically only have one, or maybe two tabs open at the most when using the browser. As another interesting note, I used to have Firefox set to automatically update, but apparently that doesn't work any more, since I believe the latest version of Firefox is version 53. Does anyone know how I can get the automatic updates started again? Perhaps a newer version of Firefox will solve the frequent crashing problem, although I worry how well it will work with Jaws 18 and Windows 7 here.
