After reading several messages from list members who were getting good
results with Win 7 and IE 11 while navigating the Amazon Web site with Jaws
version 16 I decided to install IE 11 and give it a try. It seems a bit more
stable on the Amazon Web site as long as I am navigating and reading.
However if I don’t do any thing for several minutes IE stops and I get the
message that Internet Explorer has stopped working and asking me what to do;
Shut down, check the Internet for a solution, etc. Are there some settings that
would make IE more stable? Sometimes I can alt tab away from IE and
then alt tab back and Amazon comes back. Tom

It is reasonably accessible and usable with Jaws. You will need to spend
some time to familiarise yourself with its lay out. I must however admit
that I do not get the opportunity to spend a great deal of time there.

You can navigate between headings by pressing h Features such as sending

Has anyone had experience with the linked-in web site for professional
networking, in terms of how accessible its various features are with Jaws?

I'm certainly going to investigate this more thoroughly myself, but always
find the experiences of others to be useful.

Hello list,

I was wondering if others have experienced this issue?

While in Firefox, Jaws will lose speech or crash all together when I press
the control+j command to check the status of my downloads. This doesn’t
happen in IE and it doesn’t matter if I’m either in the process of
downloading something or just reviewing the history of downloads. Also, it
doesn’t matter where I’m downloading from. Be it bookshare, Bard, etc.

I’m using the latest JFW update on a Windows 64 bit machine running the
latest Firefox enterprise version (17.0.6) since the regular Firefox is
still having problems with flash and Jaws. And yes, I have also experienced
this problem with the regular Firefox version.

I can’t recall whether this crashing/freezing happened before the latest
Jaws update, but I’m inclined to believe so. I don’t have an earlier version
of Jaws on this computer either where I can try it out.

Anyone else come across this problem?

Hi,
My computer automatically installed IE 10. As a result, I can no longer do
things I'm used to doing like reading newspapers, and navigate certain
websites. I know it's probably settings that need to be changed, but I don't
know which ones. In control panel, I've never had luck with changing my
theme. I do what I think should be done which is to be set to classic, but
every time I check it, it seems to be on another theme or unsaved theme.
Where can I uninstall IE 10 so my life can return to what I feel is normal
for me? I've always welcomed changes in technology, but Windows7 and I have
just never gotten along for some reason. This situation happened too with IE
9, but I was able to revert to 8, but I don't remember what I did because I
tried so many different things. I went to the control panel and checked to
have updates downloaded, but let me choose when to install, but even that
didn't make much difference to Microsoft. I'm running windows7 with JAWS14
latest build. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated. I would like to
work with IE 10 if I had a step-by-step instructional explanation regarding
all necessary changes, but for now, I need to go back to IE 8. Thanks in
advance for your help.
Jo

with an error message that it will close down. Any thoughts, how I can find
out for sure if it is effected?

There was a serious security hole in IE that was discovered recently, and
code exploits were in the wild. It was serious enough that my university
chose to recommend that everyone stop using IE until Microsoft released a
fix for this hole. They even pushed FireFox out to all domain managed
computers at the university.

I've never seen a response like this before, so I thought it was worth
warning a few lists I am on.

Microsoft has released an update and you should make sure to install it as
soon as possible. Your virus definitions would not have helped you in this
case. If you had been lured into going to a maliciously crafted web site,
or hit a legitimate site with a compromised ad on it, it was possible to
have remote code executed on your machine, at the same level of permissions
as the user running IE at the time. Since most people don't set up users
with limited access to their own machine, most people are running with
administrator privileges, so this could be pretty serious.

Again, I rarely send out warnings of viruses or malware, but when I see a
response like this from our security office, I believe it to be a credible
and serious threat.

Again, Microsoft has released a fix and you should update as soon as
possible.

I had a similar issue sometime ago in Windows Vista and Outlook 2003. From

explanation was that one can loose that registry key for a number of reasons

Try control shift and E to turn them on and off. Jaws will announce when you

clutter but Jaws not recognizing the edit box at all.

One list member has suggested upgrading to Jaws 12 in order to fix the
problem with IE 9. If this is the case, I must share my disappointment in
Freedom Scientific for sinking so low by not fixing such a basic issue for
Jaws 11 users. I have remained a faithful Jaws customer ever since I first

Unfortunately, K1000 does not always retain the colours and lay out of a

I am surprised that k1k does not allow you to keep the original document
format but then I am not a k1k user currently.

I have used Abbyy Finereader since its version 3.0. Any recent version of Fr
does allow you to keep the document formatting.

Depending on where you live in the world, you may be able to get a previous
version of the software at a much reduced price.

If you want to buy Finereader, you want to get the Professional version.

I just checked headers and saw that you are in Europe. Try going to

www.pearl.de

and see if they have an English version of their webpage. There you can get
FR9, the previous version of Fr, for about 30 Euros. It will probably be
f=proficient for what you need - and is the same fine engine that is used in
the latest version of k1k I believe.

Re: [JAWS-Users] how to convert ribbon design in Office 2010

2011-06-06 Thread Waqas Chauhdry
Greetings,

Thanks to all who replied to my query. Now, the big question, if one is not
using Jaws 12 as in the case of my friend, is there still a way of getting
rid of the ribbon design?

Very Best Regards

The virtual ribbon takes you back to the menu structure, a way from the
ribbon structure.
When I tried it the first time it came out I liked it for a second, then I
turned it off. I turned it off because I got so use to the ribbons and for
some reason I felt like I was going backwards.
It seems first letter navigation works when the virtual ribbon is activated,
instead of tab tab tab or remembering the keytips for the ribbons.
I don't really care for it, but nice thought though.

Two ways, whichever you choose:

Method #1:

Open the configuration manager insert-f2.
Go to Settings.
Open miscellaneous.
Virtual Ribbons is the third option. Check it.

Method 2:
Press insert-6 to bring up the settings search box.
Press control-shift-D for the default application.
Type virtual ribbon in the search box.
Press down-arrow.
Check the box for virtual ribbons.

Well I can, but I think there is a JFW training module that does the same
thing. If you have experienced the virtual ribbons for yourself, and how if
you arrow through you may or may not see every option, and tabbing from
group to group, well? Turning on the VR option in Jaws, while it is a
cop-out, is more productive for me. When you go back into the menu, you are
saved at the last place you were, so for example, when I make bulleted
lists, I can go in and turn bullets off quickly.

Many thanks for the suggestion, I have just worked it out. Those who are
interested, go to the control panel and then, programme and features. Tab
across to the link installed updates and hit enter. A list of all
installed updates will be displayed in alphabetic order. Now, you can use
first letter navigation until you hear Windows internet explorer 9 press
enter again and the option to uninstall is there.

[JAWS-Users] Jaws problem in IE 8

Greetings,

I wonder if someone can help with a problem. When ever I use the key stroke
jaws key, control and home to get to the search field on a web page, the

I'd appreciate if someone could tell how to fix this issue and whether it is

I've not really played with this sight because quite simply I've never

typical flash for you. Apparently Adobiesay they are going to make flash

Try the sight and let us all know how you find it!
And if someone on this list knows about this new thing called html5 ccould

It all depends on which website you're using really. For example, if
you use the BBC IPlayer, there's a button called timeline. when you
press space on that, you have an option to skip to different sections
of the video, so 1 button will be 10%, the other will be 20%, etc etc.
same with volume controls, but not all websites implement this.

 Hope this helps,

Thanks but what about places like YouTube and similar websites? Are there no
scripts available to label the buttons in Flash player to work with Jaws?

It all depends on which website you're using really. For example, if you use
the BBC IPlayer, there's a button called timeline. when you press space on
that, you have an option to skip to different sections of the video, so 1
button will be 10%, the other will be 20%, etc etc. same with volume
controls, but not all websites implement this.

Hope this helps,

Mo.

I suppose not! My sighted colleague tells me that the buttons change
depending on the type of programme i.e. HD etc. so, I think we really need
some scripts.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Using Jaws on two computers

2010-04-03 Thread Waqas Chauhdry
It is perfectly legal to install Jaws on different machines. I run Jaws on
three machines (work, laptop and home PC) simultaneously. Further more, FS
was quite happy to reset my three activation keys just in case if I need to
reinstall. I suppose the real cause for concern for them would be if one
Jaws license is used by multiple users and quite rightly so.

Hi,
as long as you have activations left you could install it on serveral
computers along side each other. I don't know and don't believe that it is
legal though. Anyway they won'gt notice or care I suppose.
Just download the latest and greatest and go ahead to installing and
activating.
Only problem is when you need to reinstall on one of these machines and you
don't have activations left. Then your Jaws dealer needs to suply you with
more keys. But since machines do crash and do get upgradedd it was never a
problem with Papenmeir.

Subject: [JAWS-Users] Using Jaws on two computers

 Hi,

I am currently using the latest Jaws 11 on an XP home OS system.

I will be purchasing a new laptop shortly with Windows 7 64 bit
system. I have several question for now.

Can I legally use Jaws on two computers without purchasing another
license? Or is my copy of Jaws okay to use on more than one computer?
I don't know if the license will allow me to do that.

Also, if it is allowable to use Jaws on more than one computer and
since I have the original DVD of Jaws 11 which does not have the
latest updates, how do I get the authorization I need so that I will
not be in the demo mode? I figure that I can download the latest
version from FS with 64 bits, but do I need to install Jaws from my DVD
first?

If I need to purchase an additional license, how much does it cost?

I am sorry for so many questions, but this is the first time for me
since I first started using Jaws on one computer. I hope that I made
 sense with my questions.

Any help will greatly be appreciated.

 Lennie

I use Jaws 10 and Windows XP with Outlook 2007. To view my Contacts, I use
the Phone List view. That view presents a simple table view with each row
representing a particular Contact, and each column represents a field; like
Mobile Phone.

In Jaws, I wish it would announce each column title as I arrow left and

in Excel.

Any help would be appreciated!

Re: [JAWS-Users] reading a scanned pdf file with Jaws

2009-12-08 Thread Waqas Chauhdry
Thanks to all especially Riana, who replied to my query in resolving this
matter. Glad to say that following your suggestions the document can be read
using K1000 software and one can set Jaws eloquence voice to read it if you
don't like the default K1000 voice. Now, whether the document is readable is
a different story all together although, it is all to do with the quality of
the document and not the software so my poor secretary has to retype the
130 pages long document (smile)

Thanks again to everyone who replied.

Hello,

You could access it from anywhere via Kurzweil, but for convenience, save
the file in the folder where your other scanned documents are, which you can
in any event change, but the default location is under:
C:\my documents\kurzweil educational systems\general

If I recall the exact syntax, but one may perhaps have to put my documents
in quotes.
Alternatively, and Sorry, I beg to differ from Keith, as Kurzweil could do
this Provided that one has set the file association for Kurzweil to open
certain files, it is possible to open the file directly with Kurzweill,
which then automatically sends the scanned image via it's OCR facility and
prints it via the virtual printer into a file, which is then treated as a
document one scans.

It takes a while, as every page of the document is being OCR'D but it does
work.

If a file association already exists and it's not the first time on a pc
that kurzweil is being used, one can open the file as follows:

Select file, still using jaws, in windows explorer and go down via the
applications menu to the open with, option.

Go down and if kurzweil is not specifically listed, choose the other,
option under that submenu.

There will be more programs, but if Kurzweil is still not listed there,
you'd have to set the file association via the folder/file association
option via the control panel.

I cannot offhand recall the exact prompts and cannot check via this pc, but
where one has to set the program to open the particular type of file with,
and one also has the option to set it as default or not, you have to type in
the full path of the executable program as per the destination installed on
your particular pc, as for some reason it doesn't recognize it if one only
put in the program name as such.

Then tab to ok and close the relevant menus.

I don't think one has to restart to get the effect, but for good measure
it's probably best to do so.

Regards,

Riana

Yes Waqas,

It could help to rather open the pdf file with k1000, which will then OCR
and read it.

If it is a scanned pdf file, jaws will in any event not be able to read it,
without converting it to text, for which you will need a scanning program.

If it is a pdf file, not created from graphics, you could open it with any
of the later jaws versions and read it with jaws in the adobe pdf program.

Hello all,

We have released the update this afternoon. You should be able to locate it
now if you use Check for Updates. Here is what it includes:

Enhancements in JAWS 11.0.746 (November 2009)

The following is a list of items addressed or added between the final JAWS
11.0.734 release and the JAWS 11.0.746 posting. All enhancements since the
initial public beta release are included in this release.

* This release resolves an issue with new Windows 7 installations
where JAWS would request that you install the mirror driver after using
applications such as iTunes 9.0.2 or Roxio Creator 2010. This has now been
resolved for JAWS 11. If you experience this issue with JAWS 10 or MAGic 11
with Windows 7, download the 64- or 32-bit Video Intercept
http://www.freedomscientific.com/downloads/jaws/JAWS-whats-new.asp#Vide
oIntercept as described earlier on this page.

The following lookup sources have been added to the JAWS Research It
feature. Remember that you can quickly access lookup sources using the
INSERT+SPACEBAR, R keystroke.

* Amazon Product Search: Displays search results from
Amazon.com(r) for the word or item entered in the edit field. Results appear
as links followed by price and shipping information.
* Bookshare(tm) Book Search: Displays search results from
Bookshare.org based on an author's name, a book's ISBN number, or words
found in a book title or book description. If a match is found, the result
appears as a link containing the author, title, and copyright date.
* Health Search on WebMD: Provides search results from the Web
site WebMD(r) for the words entered in the lookup edit field or located at
the current cursor position in a document or Web page. If a match is found,
results appear as links followed by a brief synopsis.
* Stock Quotes: Displays current and up to 52-week historical
financial information for the stock symbol entered in the edit field or
selected from a document, spreadsheet, or Web page.
* Time Search: Displays the current time and time zone for any
location typed into the edit field. Note: Be specific when entering a
location since one name may represent multiple cities. For example, if you
only type London into the edit field, you will receive time results for
London, England, U.K., London, Ontario, Canada, and London, Arkansas, U.S.A.

* UPS Tracking: Returns progress and delivery status information
for a valid UPS(tm) tracking number.
* People Search: Allows you to search for individuals using their
first and last name, street name (optional), and location. Use semicolons to
separate search terms, for example, John Smith; Main Street; St. Petersburg,
Florida. Always use a comma to separate the city and state or province
location. Note: Currently, the results that appear in the Virtual Viewer are
limited to the first 10 items provided by the Web site 411.com. This site
only displays 10 items per page. If the individual does not appear in your
initial search results, try refining your search input by including a street
name.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Is there JAWS for XP Professional and JAWS for XP Homeor just 1 JAWS for all?

2009-09-13 Thread Waqas Chauhdry
Hi Siew,

As far as I know, the pro version of Jaws would work with the home edition
but not the other way around or at least, this was the case when I
purchased Jaws. So, if your Jaws work with XP pro you'll be just fine with
the home edition. And yes, you can install Jaws without sighted assistance,
when you will insert the CD into the machine it would ask you if you wish to
install with the help of voice prompts or something like that. Just choose
yes or press enter to use voice prompts.

Today, August 11th is a special day in the life of Richard Q. Justice. Yes,
it is his birthday. I am not sure of his age, whether he is old enough to

that retirement is out of the picture since their benefit package basically
sucks. Would you all rise from your keyboards, place one hand on your

Hello Perry,

I am using JAWS 10 and Excel 2007. The methods might be a little different
for earlier versions of Excel and/or JAWS.

To hear the formula spoken use JAWS key with CTRL and function key 2. JAWS
key is the big zero key on the number pad when number lock is off. If using
the laptop configuration then use the caps lock key with CTRL and F2 to hear
the formula spoken. If you hold down the JAWS key with CTRL key and press
F2 twice, the formula will be shown in a dialog box. You can use JAWS key B
to read the box or use the JAWS cursor to read it. Use escape key to
dismiss the dialog.

Another way to read the formula is to move to the cell that contains the
formula and press function key 2 to move into edit mode. Press home key to
move to the beginning of the formula and then use right arrow key if you
want to read it character by character. use escape key to move out of the
edit mode.

If I remember correctly, in earlier versions of Excel and JAWS the command
to hear the formula was just CTRL with function key 2. Holding down CTRL
and pressing function key 2 twice would bring focus to the formula bar where
you could use arrow keys to review the formula.

Take care.

 Greetings,
How do I access the formula palette in excel? I wish to use some of the
built in functions in excel and would like to have the proper syntax.

 Thank you for your help.

I agree, my experience with Vista Business and Home Premium is the same ever
since I upgraded in January 08. For new users it is not worth the hassle
when XP does the job quite admirably.

 hi

it depends on why you where thinking of it to begin with.

I had to buy a new pc couple days ago because my xp machine crashed. So
was left with two choices, buy a new computer with vista and get on with
it, or don't have a computer. might as well chop my arms off than have no

 computer. *smiles*

I figured might as well get used to vista since I had to purchase a new
 machine any way.

yes, I'll agree vista is different to xp, but in a lot of ways, exactly
 the same.

you still have a desktop, you still have email, you still have menues.

windows mail was outlook express, but honestly if you could use the latter

then you sure can use the former.

I.E is version 7 so that the same as XP.

I would strongly recommend anyone wishing to go for vista, takes a look at

the daisy files from freedom scientific. it does explain a lot and how to
manage the new layout of the desktop, what the vista gadgets are etc.

so meaning no di respect to anyone, I totally disagree with people when
they say don't upgrade, it's not accessible

load of rubbish and gives a total wrong impression.

what is good for one might not work for another, but I would say try it
out as you might find it is easier to use than what you currently have.
 and, you might like it.

I'm sorry if this upset anyone, this was not my intention.

I for one was scared off from upgrading by the so called experts I am
 not pointing any fingers here.

my last comments here are, ask yourself your own questions?

why do you want to upgrade?

 Thanks

Control JAWS key r is reply to sender, useful in mailing lists where you
can reply to the individual rather than the whole list. Control R is a
standard Outlook Express keystroke to reply to a message.

 Dear List,

I have already posted this on the blind Computing list but David F has
agreed that in this instance it might be useful to post here also.

I have been using the revolutionary EyePal Scanner for 3 months now.
Some of you may have heard about this special scanner which to keep it
on topic does work well with Jaws. . I have decided to write a user
review. The headline is that it is awesome in some ways and I find it
is now indispensable for me. However it is let down by buggy software.

The link to the review is below. I hope you find it interesting if you
decide to read it. Needless to say I have no connection with any of
the manufactures or retailers of this device so this is completely
independent as you will probably tell from some of the criticisms.

be an attachment and should not have any jproblems getting through. I also
had problems trying to understand the name of the sender of the message. I

Re: [JAWS-Users] Microsoft Outlook Send and Receive.

2009-04-14 Thread Waqas Chauhdry
Hi Mandy,

Try the following if you are using Outlook 2000, 2002 or 2003:

1. Open a new message in Outlook and then, bring up the view menu and arrow
down to the BCC field and hit enter. Press escape to come out of the new
message. Now, when you will open up a new message the BCC field would be
there, after the CC field.

2. In order to automatically set your Outlook to send/receive messages,
check it under tools and send and receive that it is checked to do it
automatically. There is another setting which you will find under tools,
options, preferences, e-mail settings, advanced settings and then check the
tick box to automatically send and receive e-mails. The next tab will land
you in a combo box where you can use your arrow keys to choose the interval
i.e. mine is set to 1 minute.

Hello Sherry,

You might check in verbosity settings to see if the new line indication has
been set to something other than off. While in Microsoft Word, use insert+V
to bring up the JAWS verbosity dialog, press the letter n to move to the
new lines and paragraphs indication choice and if it is not set to off
then use spacebar until you get that setting. Also, you might check in the
configuration manager. Use JAWS key 6 to open Word's configuration manager.

Use Alt+S to bring up the settings menu. use down arrow to the text
processing choice and press enter key. Use shift-tab past the OK button
and there should be three or four checkboxes shown that control the
indication of new lines. If any are checked then remove the checkmarks from
all relevant checkboxes by using spacebar. Use the tab key to move to the
OK button and press enter key. Use CTRL+S to save changes and close the
configuration manager.

Take care.

Since this is not Jaws related so I'll be brief. All Synbian series 60 third
edition handsets can handle e-mail, web browsing and messaging etc. You have
to decide whether you prefer a full qwerty or standard phone keypad which
would Of course determine how big or small the handset is going to be. Some
of the popular handsets with the speech software talks are Nokia E90, E71,
N95, N96 and N82.

Hi Folks,

In previous versions of Jaws, one could press alt+spacebar to get to the
system menu, where one could simply press the letter X to maximize the
window.

That is no longer possible with version 10.

I'm assuming that FS has replaced this keystroke with another one, and so
I'm wondering what it is.

As of now, I'm forced to use my Jaws cursor to go to the top of the window
and click on the maximize button, which, needless to say, is a pain the
royal backside.

Is there a keystroke that will maximize the window or allow me to access the
system menu on a window in order to perform what I want to do?

Any help would be appreciated.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Hello Waqas Chauhdry, Getting rid of greater signs in a message

2009-02-05 Thread Waqas Chauhdry
Hi there,

My point was that the greater than signs are there for a purpose i.e. to
help a sighted reader. Now, it doesn't take long for screen reader users to
make the appropriate change in the dictionary but of course, if the
correspondence in question is purely aimed at vi people than it makes sense
to take them out. It is my view that accessibility works both ways and
sometime some vi friends forget this important principle.

I just use the Jaws dictionary manager in Outlook to stop Jaws from reading
the greater than or vertical bar signs by replacing them with a space. Nip
the greater than sign in the bud for good (grin)

 Hi Alan,

Another much faster way of doing this is to paste the message into a
 WordPad
document, which opens a lot faster than Microsoft Word, and doing the same
thing of finding and replacing the greater symbols and leaving the
 replacement field blank.

Tab to the replace all button and press the spacebar.

This also does it a lot faster than word.

 Hope this helps.

You are only nipping your own reading of those greater-than signs inm the
bud, not the recipients'. Just thought I'd mention that. (they do have a
purpose, actually: the amount of greater-than signs preceding a line
indicate how many times the email was forwarded before it reached you.)

I have just checked in Outlook 2003, you can also do Control E from your
main contacts list and then type in the name and hit enter to quickly select
it - don't know if it is going to work in 2007 though.

[JAWS-Users] Jaws 10 and headings in Word 2003

2009-01-25 Thread Waqas Chauhdry
Greetings,

I am trying to permanently turn off the rather annoying announce headings
feature in Word with Jaws 10 but can't find the option anywhere. I can only
do so using the verbosity dialogue however, it only applies to a particular
document. Can someone help?

You don't need to use Jaws key f 6, you can just press h for heading.
On Sun, 25 Jan 2009 15:04:56 -0500, Kate wrote:

In jaws 9 I used to be able to go to websites and hit the number 3 to
get to various heading levels associated with the number 3, such as
google results. Now as I am using jaws 10, I cannot go straight to the
first level 3 heading on the page if there are other level one or level
two headings before the level 3 heading. Why is this? It's not as much
a hastle on google as I only have to hit the number 1, then the number
two then the number three to get to the first search result, but it's
still less efficient. It's even more complicated on other websites such
as on my blog website. Just to get to my blog, which is at a level 2
heading, I have to hit a 1 and then a 2 just to get past some other
preliminary stuff on my page, and then because there's another level
one heading that appears before my blog begins, I have to hit the
number one again and then number two again before arriving at the area
of my blog. With Jaws 9 I only ever had to hit the number 2 twice and
then I was at the blog.

On another frequently visited website, there's about six level one
headings before I come to the only heading level 2 is on the page. I
cannot simply start at the top of the page and press the number to to
find my place easily and quickly. I have to either use the insert f6
key and scroll through everything or i have to hit the number one six
times before it will even acknowledge that the level two heading even
exists.

As I continue around the web, this problem keeps slowing me down every
time. I've tried repairing jaws and nothing is helping the problem. Has
Freedom scientific just stopped supporting their former ease of heading
navigation now or something? Anyone else noticed this at all? Any work
around or setting I could try changing so this isn't happening to me?

Thanks for any feedback you might have.

Kate

You may like to consider the Samsung Q45 as well. It is only 1.8 kg in
weight and comes with a 5.5 hours battery life with Intel 2.4 ghz duo core
processor, 3 gig RAM and a massive 300 GB hard disk and the keypad is
fantastic. I paid around £750 plus £100 for an optional three year cover
here in UK for this great machine a few months ago.

netbook computers with model numbers, could please repost them back on list,
because I would like too look at them with my girl friend. She’s thinking
of purchasing one for the part time job that she has, teaching English as a
second language too blind, and visually impaired people, andshe doesn’t want
too carry aroundsomething that’s very heavy. Also, could you please include
the price please?

Sherri,

Thank you for the directions. I will give it a try later.

I have the directions documented on how to bring a CD book into iTunes. If
anyone wants these directions, just let me know and I'll post them in a
message here on the list. My directions include instructions that tell you
when to switch back and forth from the JAWS cursor to the PC cursor, but I
do not give directions on the commands for doing this.

Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] itunes question

Hi,
I have been using the iTunes for several months and I think I am really
getting a handle on it. The support from Jaws 10 is really great. I am
using Jaws 9 but installed the demo of Jaws 10 so the support for iTunes was
there.
I was thinking of putting together a little tutorial for new users of iTunes
but don't know if any are already available that go into the details.
Anyway here is how I add songs (and books) to the iPod manually:

Adding files manually to iPod

Use control comma to go to the preferences in iTunes or choose it from the
Edit menu. When you are on the General tab use the right arrow to move
across the tabs. Jaws says use control tab but that does not work. After you
get to Apple TV it seems like you are at the end but do another right arrow
and after a time the Devices tab will appear. Tab to Automatically sync iPod
and uncheck it so you can do it manually. Then tab to oK.

To add songs or books do the following:

Focus on the name of your iPod in the source list after you have connected
it.

Create a new playlist and call it whatever you like (You can delete the
playlist later if you wish after the songs appear in your Music folder on
the iPod.) .

Go down your source list and make sure it shows right in the list following
the name of your iPod so you know you created it on the iPod and not in the
iTunes library.

Now it is a matter of choosing the music you want to add and copying it to
the clipboard. If you are starting out and want to add a whole playlist just
go to the name of the playlist and tab twice to put you in the list of songs
and choose Select all from the Edit menu or Control A. Then I choose Copy
from the Edit menu or the Applications menu just to be sure. I think using
the Control A checks all the items but to be sure press the applications key
and see if Uncheck selection is listed. It took me a while before I
discovered the many things that can be done by using the choices in the
Applications menu so check it out carefully.

Now go to the empty playlist you made on your iPod. Tab twice so you are in
the empty list area. Choose Paste from the Edit menu. The songs should be
copied into the playlist and onto the iPod.

Some people have luck focusing on the Music folder or the name of the
playlist and doing the paste but it has never worked for me. I have very
good luck pasting into an empty playlist.

Adding the songs takes time. I think you can check on the progress by using
the Jaws cursor to read the info at the top of the window. I can also hear
the computer working.

After it has pasted all the songs into the empty playlist on the iPod you
can go to the music folder of the iPod and tab to the search box to search
for one of the titles just to be sure it got there.

When you do the syncing manually you need to use the Remove hardware
Safely feature on your computer or I think an eject command appears in one
of the menus. Anyway you need to be sure not to disconnect while it is
still adding music.

One trick I noticed when adding a book in mp3 format was that after I copied
the files to the regular clipboard (not in iTunes) I just created a playlist
on the iPod and pasted the files directly there instead of pasting them into
iTunes and then onto the iPod. It was a good shortcut since I don't need
those files in iTunes anyway.

HTH

Sherrie

I just took a look at Preferences from the Edit menu. Under the General tab
there are a series of check boxes that allow you to pick what you see in

Let me know if you find anything else.

Yes Kerie, I am having the same issue both with Vista Home Premium and
Business. Furthermore, it is not just IE but in other applications such as
Outlook 2003 as well. Jaws suddenly stop talking in Outlook Calendar and
when I forward an e-mail message it get stuck in the from field of the
original message. I don't think it is a memory issue as I have 2 gb ram
installed on both machines and they are running Intel 2.4 ghz duo core
processors. The only solution I have found is to unload and reload Jaws but
it doesn't always work - would love to hear if there is some other solution.

Hi all
Just wondering has anyone found this problem, I could be doing anything,
today I've just been navigating the internet trying to search in combo
boxes, using messenger, and also just generally navigating web pages, and I
find, that sometimes, for absolutely no reason I can figure out, jaws will
just stop talking and can take some time to start talking again, in order
for this to happen I normally press insert t but sometimes I will just wait,
anyone else finding this problem?
And if so, what did you do to fix it?
I'm running vista home premium.
Thanks in advance,

I am using Free DVD burner to burn data dvd's. It is very easy and free.
The only hangup I have found at all is that after I burn a dvd I have to
completely close out the program before starting another different dvd.
When I try to delete the folder and add another it always gives me an error
message. But it is really simple. I read about it on Fred's Head Companion.
Here is the info from that source:
One of the most frustrating things that still remains for Windows XP is that
you can't burn data directly to a DVD. This is very unfortunate because of
the amount of storage space on a DVD. Well, the folks at MiniDVDSoft.com are
out to change this with a FREE program.

Free DVD Burner is an ideal tool to burn data DVD/CDs. It can easily burn
files onto most DVD/CD discs such as CD-R,CD-RW,DVD-R,DVD+R, DVD-RW and
DVD+RW.

With Free DVD Burner, you can use a screen reader and burn DVD/CDs from
files and folders for backing up your data on DVD/CD. Free DVD Burner allows

you to burn data DVD/CDs in a few minutes and it's completely FREE. Simply
select the files and folders you want to put on a DVD/CD and press the
Start Burn button and let the program do the rest.

Click this link to download Free DVD Burner from
http://www.minidvdsoft.com/dvdburner.

Instructions for use: from website

1) Start FREE DVD Burner, insert a blank CD/DVD and select the CD/DVD
burning device.

Can't find CD/DVD device?

2) Click Size Limit button to select disc size. The default setting is
DVD-5 (4.5GB).

3) Add files and folders to the list, click Start Burn button to set the
Burning Options.

4) Select the burning speed and mode in the Burning Options group. Click
Burn button to burn data DVD/CD.

Welcome to the list. I'm not sure about DVD creators, but if you want to
burn CD's, one thing you can use is Windows Media Player, which comes with
Windows, but you could also use Winamp to burn music CD's, if that's what
you want to do. Hopefully someone else can fill in the DVD creator
question, or suggest something else that would perhaps do both. Again,
welcome to the list, and hope you find it helpful and informative. Don't be
afraid to ask us pretty much any JAWS-related question. there's probably
bound to be someone who knows the answer. Mark

Well I'd to take a minute to thank those who have already wished me well

also in advance of those who will as the day progresses. The fact is I
 won't
be home much today because of family obligations so it might take a while
 to
respond to some of the messages. All I can think of right now is that 50

[JAWS-Users] Jaws 10 start up issue

2008-12-28 Thread Waqas Chauhdry
Greetings,

I wonder if someone can help me with this strange problem? I have both Jaws
9 and 10 installed on my machine running Vista Business. I have unchecked
the start up options in Jaws 9 as I wish Jaws 10 to start automatically on
the log in screen however, everytime I restart the machine the settings
somehow go back to Jaws 9 being checked to start automatically on start up.
Any thoughts on how to resolve this problem? I don't wish to uninstall Jaws
9 as yet.

hello there;

you could try the following;

1, when you boot your computer, and windows has loaded, as has jaws,
assuming its version9, go into the options, and uncheck the box, for run
jaws at startup.

2, now, unload jaws9,

3, now load jaws10, again, go to options, and make sure that, the box is
checked, for, run jaws at startup.

this should resolve the issue.

Re: [JAWS-Users] my questions: about Jaws and the computer:

2008-11-20 Thread Waqas Chauhdry
Hi Eric,

And I am certainly one of those thousands who are benefiting both
professionally and personally from computers and Jaws. I remember I had just
started to learn computing and Jaws when I met you at the Sight Village in
Birmingham in the summer of 2002 and as a 22 year old law graduate my life
was stuck as I was left with no useful sight. Whatever I have achieved over
the last six years is largely due to Jaws and computers and no doubt one has
to be patient in developing these new skills just like any other field.

Keep up the good work and God Bless!

Learning JAWS was definitely worth it, even though I have no intention

benefit, mostly email and web surfing and I try to learn something new
every day.
A year ago, I couldn't even type, let alone use a computer. But after

a few sessions at the rehab center which furnished me with my
JAWS-equipped computer, I just started picking up things on my own.
Try listening to the JAWS Basic Training Daisy books at your own pace.
Don't worry if you don't understand something. That's what this email

list is for. Don't feel pressured to learn JAWS just because it might

enhance your employment prospects. A talking computer is also a

Re: [JAWS-Users] JAWS Reading Emails

2008-10-23 Thread Waqas Chauhdry
Hi Donnie,

You can do it in two ways:

1. Press shift, control and W from an open message and then arrow down to
html option and hit enter.

2. To change your settings permanently to html,

i) Go into tools and then options (make sure you are not in an open message)

ii) Control and tab three times or until you hear mail format page

iii) You will land in a combo box where you can choose html as your default
setting and then tab across to the OK button.

iv) Close and reload Outlook and now your e-mail messages will be downloaded
in html format depending of course on how they were formatted.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Questionabout making changes too the font using microsoft word version 2003, with Jaws 9 point 0.

2008-10-23 Thread Waqas Chauhdry
The short answer to your question is Yes, it would save the changes just for
that particular document. If you wish to make 12 point the new default
setting, try the following steps:

1. From an open document press shift control and P to open the font dialogue
box.
2. Quickly type 12 or use your arrow keys to choose the desired font size.
3. Now, press alt and D or tab across to the default option and press
space bar to check this box.
4. Tab across to the OK button and hit enter.
5. Close and reload Word and now your default font size should be 12 point.

Good afternoon everyone,

version.

My girlfriend has er font size set, too 24 point print, as she needs to
use that font size too teach students with low vision English as a second
language.

Now,wen we try to change the font size back too 12 point,it gives me the
following message. Save as, diolog. Do you want too save changes too
document 1 dot doc? If I answer yes too this message, will doc one dot doc,
be in the list view of her files, or is it just suppose too make the change
automatically without having too go through all of the above steps which I
