Re: [JAWS-Users] major announcement

Hi,
Actually, you can: you need to save membership list to a text file, then ask
Groups.IO to offer you a one-month transfer plan (ten dollars), which then
will allow you to add members directly via file upload method. Also, in
theory, you can port archives to Groups.IO provided that it is in Unix mbox
format.
Cheers,

Even though I have participated on this particular list minimally as a
contributor, I also vote for integrating the list with the existing JAWS for
Windows Users Group on the Groups.io e-mail list/online forum. No purpose
is served by having multiple JAWS user groups. It's one thing, for
instance, to have specialist groups like the JAWS scripting group, but if
one is looking to bring end users together the idea should be reaching the
largest audience in a single place.

For anyone who's curious, send an e-mail message to the Help e-mail address

Personally, I'd love to see the JAWS for Windows, NVDA, and Windows 10 for
Screen Reader Users groups "fused." There is very little that goes on in
any one of them that doesn't have partial or total cross-over interest for
the other. In addition, Groups.io gives you an exquisite level of control
over just what e-mail messages you will get from any group of which you're a
member. See:

I am considering moving the list over to groups IO as I understand they seem to
have less problems of being bounced by various internet providers. Over the
years and especially lately we have lost a number of good members since their
providers will not allow messages from this domain to get to subscribers, and
as such they bounce and get removed by the server. I can’t even contact these
people privately since my email address is tied to this domain.

I have to bring my people up to date on groups IO next, the good thing it is a
lot easier to figure out than Mailman. It is almost 10 years since the last
move and with luck this will be the last. I do not know how much longer I will
keep running this beast, but believe it or not in October it will be 13 years.
Bob and I never figured on it lasting this long, There is obviously a need
which is the reason for keeping it.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Just For Fun, Emoji

2018-06-21 Thread joseph.lee22590
Hi,
I'll try my best to address several questions about emoji panel in one go:

Q. What is emoji?
Emoji (a shorthand Japanese for "emotion characters", from Romanization of
"emo" and "ji" (character)) is a picture that represents objects, emotions,
people, events and so on. This came about in the late 1990's where people
wanted to conserve space on data usage yet wanted to express their emotions
to the fullest. This became pop0ular among Japanese mobile phone users via
SMS (short messaging service) before it gain widespread usage in 2010's.

Q. How do I read emoji?
It'll depend on screen reader and synthesizer in use. Some synthesizers do
support announcing emojis, while others don't. Also, the ability to
recognize emojis will depend on how the screen reader processes Unicode data
and instructions sent to speech synthesizers regarding how to process such
characters.

Q. How do I input emoji?
In Windows 10 Version 1709 (Fall Creators Update) and later, you can browse
and insert emoji by pressing Windows+period or Windows+semicolon. Note that
in 1709 and 1803 (April 2018 Update), only United States English keyboard
layout will let you browse emojis. In Redstone 5 (under development), this
restriction is gone.
In 1709 and 1803, once emoji panel opens, press the arrow keys to move
through emojis. Press Tab to cycle through emoji categories, or if you're
looking for a specific emoji, type the name and the panel will return
suggestions. To insert a given emoji, press Enter.
In Redstone 5, you can still use arrow keys to move through emojis. However,
pressing Tab will not cycle through categories; rather, it'll switch between
emojis and categories. To select a different emoji category, press Tab to go
the categories, then use left or right arrows to move through categories and
press Enter. In case of People category, you can choose a skin tone. Once
the emoji is found, press Enter.

Q. Does JAWS support emoji panel?
Not at this time (according to tests). Some users asked VFO regarding this
matter not long ago.

Q. Does other screen readers support emoji panel?
Write to me privately regarding this matter please (not only to keep the
topic on scope, but also because I am the one who brought support for emoji
panel for a certain screen reader; hint: there will come a day when a
certain scripts will not be required to interact with emoji panel, but
that's for another time).

Cheers,
Joseph

Howdy Jerry,

Do you have Fast Start enabled? If this is enabled then when you shut your
computer down it doesn't really shut down, but it goes into a hibernated
state that allows the computer to wake-up & install updates, run security
scans, & whatever the Widows 10 system is supposed to do in this state.
These tasks are all scheduled and designed to do their thing when your
computer is not being used. But, if Fast Start is disabled it can't do
these scheduled tasks. So, in your case if Fast Start is not turned on in
can't wake-up to install the updates and you would have to do them manually.
If you have Fast Start enabled and the updates aren't being installed there
might be an error code message somewhere which explains why. if you do a
search using the error code number as your search criteria.
Take care. Mike. Go Dodgers!

Evening all.

Using JAWS 2018 and Windows 10 on a Dell laptop, I have a confusing problem.

When I go to shut down my laptop, I close all open programs with the
exception of JAWS. After returning to the desktop, I use the ALT F4 command,
and I get an option for updating and shutting down. But after pressing this
option, my laptop goes ahead and shuts down. So, the next time I start my
device, and shut it down for the day, I still get this option. I go into the
Windows notifications, and it states there is an update that was not able to
be completed. Any suggestions/advice on this problem? Thanks in advance for
any help.

There is an active discussion on Win10 (groups.io) forum where people wrote

either:
1. Notification announcement is turned off in JAWS.
2. A specific Win32 host process isn't running.

I Googled the problem. There were solutions posted for Windows 10 Pro but
not for the Home version. But I found this interesting. It's not JAWS
fault, since it seems there is no message displayed.

Someone wrote:

I'm glad I found this thread... I am having a similar issue...

When "Safely Removing" using the Icon on the lower right of the Taskbar, the
Safe Removal confirmation message no longer appears...

There is just a quick blink on the Taskbar... Checking ThisPC afterwards
shows the drive in question has been removed...

Maybe Microsoft will fix this in a later update.

Hi,
Windows+T will cycle through Taskbar icons, including pinned programs,
running programs and what not. In contrast, Windows+Tab will do different
things depending on which Windows release you've got:
* Windows prior to Vista: moves focus to Taskbar.
* Windows Vista: cycle through open programs via AERO Flip 3D.
* Windows 7: Peak at running program icons.
* Windows 8.x: cycles through running Windows Store paps.
* Windows 10 versions prior to 1803: display a grid of open windows and
manage virtual desktops.
* Windows 10 Version 1803: shows a grid of open windows, manage virtual
desktops, and a feature I'll be demonstrating on March 26th Tek Talk.

Hi,
This command is used in various layouts.
As for why Windows+TAT won't work on Windows 7: AERO Flip is used in this
case. As opposed to earlier releases, when you press this command, Windows
Vista and 7 will present a list of icons, and you can press Windows Tab
multiple times to cycle between programs. On Windows 8.x, this command is
used to cycle through Windows Store apps, and on Windows 10, opens Task View
(a combination of traditional taskbar and virtual desktop management
features; a new feature joins this screen starting with Version 1803).

Hi Cheez & Joseph,

Running Windows 7 Pro on 2 Dell desktops & 2 Lenovo laptops with J16 thru
J2018 latest, & Windows + Tab does not work to switch between open programs,
at all! Actually invoking the Windows + Tab, keystroke doesn't do anything
useful. On the other hand using, Alt + Tab. Works just fine to switch
between programs. I'm only speaking about our personal computers, & noone
elses.
Take care. Mike. Go Dodgers!

Hi,
This command is used in various layouts.
Cheers,
Joseph

How about in the future, differentiate which keyboard layout is being used

Hi,
Hmmm, and is JAWS functional? Have you tried System Restore to see if it
fixes it for a while?
As for why I asked for Windows 10 release version: when people say they've
got Windows 10, some of us (including I) go into a "panic mode" where we
need to ask which release of Windows 10 one is using due to massive
differences between releases. In case of the info below, Tim is using
Version 1709.

Re: [JAWS-Users] JAWS freezing when switching between programs

2018-03-10 Thread joseph.lee22590
Hi,
I see. I did say, "part of this may have to do with ...", which leaves open
the possibility that it might not be apps at all, but rather JAWS alone.
Given one evidence here, I'd say let's gather more evidence before we
conclude for sure that it is JAWS. If folks running JAWS 16 and 17 on other
computers can replicate this, then we can move forward and say that
bisecting the code might be the next step (from VFO's side, as core code in
JAWS is closed source).

Joseph,

I must respectfully disagree with your point. Earlier versions of JAWS on
the same machine do not exhibit the same symptoms. It is clear to me that it
is the new design of JAWS from version 17 onward that is the root cause of
the freezing, hesitation, and slowdown. To wit -- why would VFO put an auto
restart routine into JAWS so that it can quietly crash and restart, when
things bog down? Why not simply fix the disease, and not the symptom?'

Hello Mike,
John Justice, here.
I work for the state and use configurations which are similar to the ones
you describe.

In the interest of correcting the problem, I brought it to the attention of
our upper level Access group. Their explanation doesn't solve any issues
but it might give you food for thought.

 1. THE ISSUE AT HAND: apparently, what we are experiencing is the
assignment of RAM. Current versions of Jaws tend to utilize a considerable
amount of RAM, especially when changing from one software environment to
another. The result is that the system has to {wait} for enough RAM to
perform the function.
2. PROGRAM PRIORITY ASSIGNMENT: It is possible to assign certain programs
on a PC so that they have a priority when RAM is distributed. This is way
beyond my pay grade Mike but apparently, within reason, certain programs can
be allowed to operate at the expense of others, at least temporarily. There
are exceptions to this rule and certain pieces of software are assigned a
permanent top priority. I imagine that the Windows operating system might
have that kind of assignment.
3. According to our A. T. department, reassignment involves the division of
RAM into smaller compartments which then handle this function. The entire
process scares the heck out of me. It isn't something I'd want to attempt.
There might be someone on our list with more technological knowledge than I
have.
4. A WORKING SOLUTION: I am now operating two computers simultaneously.
One is dedicated to some of the functions I need while the second unit
handles primary functions. For example, I use the secondary unit to load
and display Excel spreadsheets. But even with that arrangement, certain
pieces of software will temporarily shut down Jaws until they are fully
loaded. The down time has been measured and it is usually approximately32
seconds.
5. CREATING HOTKEYS FOR RELOADING JAWS: Finally, we have established
hotkeys which can be used to encourage Jaws to restart. Occasionally,
though rarely, Jaws wil not restart after one of these incidents. We use
three key combinations which are dedicated to reactivating Jaws.

The entire thing is frustrating to say the least, Mike. But it's
