Re: [JAWS-Users] Help with creating fillable forms in Word 2010

Hi Brian! When you create forms in Word, are you able to export them to a PDF
format, and have the controls stat in tact using the methods you described in
your email?

Fernando Gregoire wrote, in part: " Fortunately Word still has the option,
in the Developer tab together with the new content controls, a split button
called Legacy Control which allows you to insert a form field like the ones
available in Word 2003 and earlier, which are backward compatible and more
accessible with the keyboard and JAWS. "

It's actually "Legacy Tools," but your central point still stands. I customize
the ribbon to include the developer tab, if you need assistance with this it
needs to be a message of its own. One can then get to the insert function for
the various types of form fields with keyboard shortcuts, all of which start
with ALT+L to throw focus to the Developer Tab, followed by N for the Legacy
Controls area of the Controls Group, followed by one of the following:

  E for a text field
  H for a checkbox
C for a dropdown form field (AKA a Combo Box)
  F for frame
  S for form field shading
  R for Reset form fields

Remember, you need to be creating a Microsoft Word document template, a dotx
file, not a docx regular document, and that when you are finished you will want
to Protect the form from editing *except* for those fields where you want the
end user to be able to type in data. You do that via ALT+L (Developer Ribbon),
PE (Protect Item), then, under the "Editing Restrictions" section of the
protection dialog check the checkbox for "Allow only this type of editing" in
the document and selecting "Filling In Forms" from the associated dropdown
associated with the checkbox, then hitting the "Yes, start enforcing
protection" button.

I far prefer the legacy controls to the current ones. Do keep in mind
that as text fields get filled in the content will shift what's in the
remainder of the form. As a result, I don't ever put text fields of
indeterminate size next to one another, but on completely separate lines.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Excel cells now reading differently

Hi there! I have encountered some issues with Excel as well. I ended up
having to reinstall the desktop application. I hate to say it, but you may
have to do that. I noticed that there is a Windows app from the store
called Excel. If this is installed, it will give you fits.

Hello all,
I am using JAWS 2018 and Office 365 in Windows 10 1803.
I have just noticed the last week or 2 a very annoying event in Excel.
I have a Description in a cell as follows, "June 27 payroll draw"
When I go to that cell and press F2 and begin to arrow right each time I
arrow right JAWS reads me "June 27 payroll draw" instead of "J" then "U"
etc.
This is more than annoying because if I did not have a little residual sight
I would have no way of knowing where the cursor is to delete the 7 and
replace with 8.
Is anyone else finding this in Excel recently?
I feel like the little white ball bouncing between Microsoft and VFO's
paddles of "improvement."

[JAWS-Users] Password screen still not working

2018-05-08 Thread miketmote73
Hi folks! I'm using the latest build of JAWS 2018, along with the latest
build of Windows 10, and I still get no consistency with respect to JAWS
speaking at the log on screen. This is getting to the point of annoying.
Most times I have to start Narrator in order to log into my computer.

Also, if I change my password for Office 365, and then try to log onto the
Outlook desktop application, it crashes, the first time. When I relaunch
the program, I have to press Insert plus F10 to find the Windows security
option. I am able to find where to type in my Password, but the behavior is
inconsistent. I'm hoping the engineers at VFO will address this issue soon.

[JAWS-Users] Issues with my braille display navigating an Excel spreadsheet

2018-03-21 Thread miketmote73
Good morning all! I wondered if anyone could help me with an issue I am
experiencing with navigating an Excel workbook.

I can use my PC to navigate to the cells, and my braille display will follow
me. If I use the display to move through the columns though, it won't
advance past the A column. I can scroll down by row using my braille
display, but cannot scroll through the columns, and go from A to B to C etc.
Is there a setting that I can change that will help me do this? Many
thanks!

Re: [JAWS-Users] Jaws 18 and PDF?

2017-07-11 Thread miketmote73
Generally speaking, JAWS reads PDF files, provided they are created
properly. The structure of the document has to include proper tags and
other accessibility considerations, so that screen readers are able to read
the information. Scanned images are most likely not going to be read by a
screen reader, unless you perform some type of OCR, (Optical Character
Recognition). This functionality is already built into JAWS. Certainly, in
some cases, this works well, but in others, it is not ideal. For example,
if you're trying to fill out paperwork that was sent to you as a scanned
image, chances are, this will not work for you very well at all. While JAWS
may read to you the information, you probably won't be able to determine
where you should put requested informationlike your name, phone number etc.
onto the document, if you can edit it at all.
I have seen JAWS read documents that were not properly tagged for
accessibility, and other times it doesn't read the file at all. It really
depends on the type of file you're trying to read with Adobe, and what type
of accessibility considerations were included by the author of said file.

Hi List, I am wondering if it is worth spending the money to upgrade to 18
from the latest 16. If you say that it can read PDFs without going through
recognition steps, then, it will be worth it for me.

Please let me know.

Sincerely, Vicky Vaughan

I would like to see how this works, but I do not have an account, and I'm
not really interested in paying what it costs to subscribe. I use the
Tunein app for my NFL football listening experience, and find that it works
very well.

Re: [JAWS-Users] jaws 18 and outlook

2017-06-23 Thread miketmote73
Justin, that is an Outlook setting that you may want to change. When you're
in Outlook, press Alt plus F and then the letter T to get into your options
menu. Under the mail options, tab over until you hear JAWS say:
display a desktop alert. uncheck the box. I hope this helps.

I tried routing my PC cursor to the touch cursor which was sitting on the
button, and then tried to label the button, and still no go! I'm starting
to think you can't label buttons like this either.

Hi,

My best guess is that you cannot create a custom label while using the touch
cursor. In fact, I just tried pressing JAWS Key+Control+Tab while using the
touch cursor and while focus was on a button and was told I could not create
a custom label for the button, but when I located the same button when not
using the touch cursor, everything worked as it should.

Hello,

When on the Internet, once you locate a button without a label, press JAWS
(Insert) Key+Control+Tab. You will then be asked to type in a label.

I hope this is what you were needing.

Good morning all! I am a brand new member to this list, and I have a
question regarding the use of the touch cursor.

On a web-site that I use, I am encountering buttons that do not have labels.
When I activate them using the touch cursor, they perform certain functions
consistently, such as activating the save file option. I am then presented
with the standard save as dialog box. My question is this. Can I assign a
label to this button? It is not found by either the JAWS or PC cursor.
When pressing Insert plus F2, I am not seeing the option to label a button.
Any help would be appreciated. Glad to be part of this list!
