Hello Ann Marie et al,

I have been struggling with CD creation for a long time now.

What in the name of all is the difference between burning and ripping?

Which ever choice I make the CD is ejected on apparent completion but it
still won't play on anything and when I look again in the computer there
seems only to be two files regardless of how many I select.

Now I have not yet tried your method of drag-&-drop but instead have tried
copy-&-paste which method only seems to yield two files.

Thanks and thanks for your directions, I'll try them soon.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Burn CD with Media Player

2010-10-10 Thread Ann Marie Medlar

Hi,
I find it so frustrating as well.
Ripping is copying songs from a CD in your drive. I guess that is just the
lingo.

I don't believe you can just use the regular control+c.
Burn is sort of like writing to a CD.
These instructions are for taking a CD with music, I used a store purchased
audio CD and I wanted to make a copy. So when I burn or write the music to
the blank CD, the format is the same as what was on the original CD, CDA,
which means compact disk audio.
If you go to my computer from the desktop, open the D drive or whatever is
defined on your PC as your CD drive, you can see the contents of what is on
your CD. It could be audio or data.
If you follow my instructions, and press space bar twice on buttons, and
down arrow, you will find out much information. The only reason why I
posted this info is that a friend asked me to help him with copying a music
CD and he only has window Media Player.
It took me some time to figure it out and I hope my instructions are
correct. I successfully burned a copy of a CD. I hope I helped you but if
not please ask more questions.

Ann

Re: [JAWS-Users] Burn CD with Media Player

2010-10-11 Thread Ann Marie Medlar
Thanks Lisa. Why do you prefer this program. Is the ripping process
better? I don't really know what that means. When I used WMP to burn a cd
the other day I got static so I thought maybe I should unload Jaws and then
reload after ripping and burning. But after some analysis it had to do with
my CD drive itself. Whenever I played a cd on player I could hear some
static. So then I tried to burn a disk and the CD kept ejecting. I went
into My Computer and the D drive was not even part of the list of drives.
So I thought perhaps a virus or something but did not know. I rebooted and
then the D drive was listed and no more static. I burned some CDs and all
sounds fine.
I think I will download this software and give it a whirl. But honestly I
felt thrilled that I finally understood WMP. I just learned by trial and
error. I ruined so many CDS.
I usually don't use CDs much because I can copy songs in MP3 format on a
thumb drive, Cf or SD card. I can plug in NLS digital player with songs
into my radio or use my Dell PDA and plug into radio to hear music. I am
happy that I learned how to burn because I'll use CDs while travelling in
car.

Thanks again.
Ann

Re: [JAWS-Users] Burn CD with Media Player

2010-10-11 Thread Lisa Belville

Well, the process is more straight forward.

I have tons of ram and a pretty fast processor, but WMP constantly hangs on
my system and I need to go into task manager to shut it down. I know it's
WMP because before it starts all is happy, and once it's gone, all is well
again. I'm not sure what's causing this, but it's a fairly consistent
occurrence for me.

Plus I don't find this version of WMP, version 11, to be as user friendly as
previous versions. I think there's a tutorial out there specifically
designed with keyboard commands and screen readers, but I've had good luck
with CDex, so that's what I'm sticking to for now.

As far as usability of CDex, You just download and use the accompanying
documentation to configure the program. It will also burn data CDs and a
few other types of files, but I haven't explored this further.

Then you put in a CD, start CDex, and it goes out to the net and finds the
CD in a huge data base. If there's more than one match, it shows you what
options are available. There's sometimes a data listing and a regular music
track listing.

You tell CDex which selection you want and it automatically fills in the
meta data with album name, artist, genre, release date and track listing.
these all appear in separate fields you can tab to and edit if necessary.

The tracks appear in a simple list view, so you can use arrow keys in
combination with control or shift to select the tracks you want or Control A
to select all tracks. Then you press F9 for MP3 or F10 for a wave copy and
the program does the rest.

Once in a great while, it can't find a match. This usually happens with
copies of CDs that aren't the original, like stuff you've burned on other
PCs.

Thanks Lisa. Why do you prefer this program. Is the ripping process
better? I don't really know what that means. When I used WMP to burn a
cd the other day I got static so I thought maybe I should unload Jaws and
then reload after ripping and burning. But after some analysis it had to
do with my CD drive itself. Whenever I played a cd on player I could hear
some static. So then I tried to burn a disk and the CD kept ejecting. I
went into My Computer and the D drive was not even part of the list of
drives. So I thought perhaps a virus or something but did not know. I
rebooted and then the D drive was listed and no more static. I burned
some CDs and all sounds fine.

Ann

Surely there must be a more direct and easier method of copying files from

Well, the process is more straight forward.

I have tons of ram and a pretty fast processor, but WMP constantly hangs
on my system and I need to go into task manager to shut it down. I know
it's WMP because before it starts all is happy, and once it's gone, all is
well again. I'm not sure what's causing this, but it's a fairly
consistent occurrence for me.

Plus I don't find this version of WMP, version 11, to be as user friendly
as previous versions.

There's sometimes a data listing and a regular
music track listing.

You tell CDex which selection you want and it automatically fills in the
meta data with album name, artist, genre, release date and track listing.
these all appear in separate fields you can tab to and edit if necessary.

The tracks appear in a simple list view, so you can use arrow keys in
combination with control or shift to select the tracks you want or Control
A to select all tracks. Then you press F9 for MP3 or F10 for a wave copy
and the program does the rest.

Once in a great while, it can't find a match. This usually happens with
copies of CDs that aren't the original, like stuff you've burned on other
PCs.

Thanks Lisa. Why do you prefer this program. Is the ripping process
better? I don't really know what that means. When I used WMP to burn a
cd the other day I got static so I thought maybe I should unload Jaws
and then reload after ripping and burning. But after some analysis it
had to do with my CD drive itself. Whenever I played a cd on player I
could hear some static. So then I tried to burn a disk and the CD kept
ejecting. I went into My Computer and the D drive was not even part of
the list of drives. So I thought perhaps a virus or something but did not
know. I rebooted and then the D drive was listed and no more static. I
burned some CDs and all sounds fine.
I think I will download this software and give it a whirl. But honestly
I felt thrilled that I finally understood WMP. I just learned by trial
and error.

I'm fairly certain CDex works with Windows seven, though.

Well, the process is more straight forward.

I have tons of ram and a pretty fast processor, but WMP constantly hangs
on my system and I need to go into task manager to shut it down. I know
it's WMP because before it starts all is happy, and once it's gone, all
is well again. I'm not sure what's causing this, but it's a fairly
consistent occurrence for me.

Plus I don't find this version of WMP, version 11, to be as user friendly
as previous versions. I think there's a tutorial out there specifically
designed with keyboard commands and screen readers, but I've had good
luck with CDex, so that's what I'm sticking to for now.

As far as usability of CDex, You just download and use the accompanying
documentation to configure the program. It will also burn data CDs and a
few other types of files, but I haven't explored this further.

Then you put in a CD, start CDex, and it goes out to the net and finds
the CD in a huge data base. If there's more than one match, it shows you
what options are available. There's sometimes a data listing and a
regular music track listing.

You tell CDex which selection you want and it automatically fills in the
meta data with album name, artist, genre, release date and track listing.
these all appear in separate fields you can tab to and edit if necessary.

The tracks appear in a simple list view, so you can use arrow keys in
combination with control or shift to select the tracks you want or
Control A to select all tracks. Then you press F9 for MP3 or F10 for a
wave copy and the program does the rest.

So I thought perhaps a virus or something but did
not know. I rebooted and then the D drive was listed and no more
static. I burned some CDs and all sounds fine.
I think I will download this software and give it a whirl. But honestly
I felt thrilled that I finally understood WMP. I just learned by trial
and error. I ruined so many CDS.
I usually don't use CDs much because I can copy songs in MP3 format on a
thumb drive, Cf or SD card. I can plug in NLS digital player with songs
into my radio or use my Dell PDA and plug into radio to hear music. I
am happy that I learned how to burn because I'll use CDs while
travelling in car.

Thanks again.

Ann,

I've not been that impressed with the CD ripping process in Windows
Media Player.I used to rip and burn CDs all of the time with WMP
nine and 10, but the process was changed with the release of WMP 11.

you could try CDex. It's a shareware program that's easy to use and is
very customizable with JAWS.

You can find it and instructions for using it at

I would have called ripping copying.

When one has material, songs or talking books already on the computer is
it necessary to first rip to CD then to burn to the CD? None of this
makes logical sense to me.

Surely there must be a more direct and easier method of copying files
from my computer to a CD directly albeit with a final step to commit to
the disk.

Ripping is putting cds or in this case songs onto the comptuer.
Burning is copying them to a blank cd.

I have been struggling with CD creation for a long time now.

What in the name of all is the difference between burning and ripping?

Which ever choice I make the CD is ejected on apparent completion but
it still won't play on anything and when I look again in the computer
there seems only to be two files regardless of how many I select.

Now I have not yet tried your method of drag-&-drop but instead have
tried copy-&-paste which method only seems to yield two files.

Thanks and thanks for your directions, I'll try them soon.

Below are my directions; if incorrect please let me know. It took me
some time to figure how to copy songs from an audio CD, rip and then
burn. I hope this helps someone.

Player, Windows XP, Jaws 11.
Go to desktop, type w for windows media player and enter
or
go to Start menu, then programs, type w for windows Media Player and
enter
Because Window Media Player (WMP) opens to wherever you left off from
last time you opened,

tab to Windows Media Player button as our start entry point.
On buttons press space bar twice to get context windows with a list
of options.

Go to each button to check out settings.
tab to rip button, press space bar twice, down arrow to eject after
ripping and enter to check that CD

will eject when complete.
press escape
tab to burn button and space bar twice and enter on eject after
burning

press escape
Now you will know when ripping and burning is completed because each
time CD should eject

insert audio CD
Song will begin press control+s to stop playing
tab to the rip button, press space bar twice, down arrow to rip
record title D: and enter

Ripping begins
Alternatively you can press enter on start rip button or press alt+s
key

Rip begins, Takes time to rip songs give it about 10 minutes
CD ejects
tab to burn button press space bar twice
Remove disk and enter a blank CD
tab to library tree view which is closed, right arrow to open
down arrow to select by artist
Tab to list view of artist
down arrow to select the band you wish to rip
Alternatively you could have selected just added, by song, year...
After selecting band use the Jaws drag and drop key
control+insert+num pad

slash
tab twice to basket list
Use Jaws drag and drop key control+insert+num pad slash to drop songs
in

basket window
control + a to highlight all songs in basket
tab to start burn button and enter
burning begins and CD ejects when completed
Jaws states Windows Media Player close button press space bar to
close

Done

Hi Ann,

Yea, WMP12 is a real pain. I wouldn't get rid of WMP11 unless you have no
other choice. SMILE!
Once I have the songs on the drive to be burn, I select them and than go
through the menu as usual. I guess this lets WMP12 know there is a burning
job to be completed.
step 2 Than you want to alt tab and WMP12 layout appears and using the JAWS
curser find "START BURN" I believe on the second line of the page from the
top. Pressing the left curser activates the burning process. Once the
burning process gets under way it will say, "CANCEL BURN" as oppose to what
it read in the past, "STOP BURN"
Note: I could be wrong, but there is no basket in WMP12 and this is why I
select the songs from the start of my burning experience.
I am not sure if my Windows7 is in classic mode or some other manufacture's
mode, but this is how I get the job done.

Hello Ann Marie,

I did a recording a couple months ago for one of my clients concerning
using
Windows Media Player 12 for ripping a CD. If you would like to go
through

the file, I have included a link to it later in this message. The
recording
is certainly not professional quality but I have removed any reference to
my
client from the file. I did not get into working with the metadata in
Windows Media Player. The setting of ripping options was included, but
once
that has been done the options are remembered by Windows Media Player for
any subsequent ripping. There very well might be other and better ways
to

do the ripping with Windows Media Player 12, and certainly with other
programs, but I found the way discussed in the recording to be an easy
way

to get the ripping done. The following link goes to my SkyDrive page

you can choose the download link to start downloading the file.

Hi Ann,

in wmp 12, you don't first have to go to a burn page. All you need to do is add
items to the burn list. You can do this by opening the add to sub menu on the
items context menu, and then choose burn list. There is also a shortcut for
adding the select item or items to the burn list - it's ctrl + 8. Once you've
added items to the burn list, then you'll beĀ able to tab to the start burn
button, the burn options button and then the list of items to be burned. The
option to eject after burning is on the menu opened by the burn options button.

Once I have the songs on the drive to be burn, I select them and than go

step 2 Than you want to alt tab and WMP12 layout appears and using the

Note: I could be wrong, but there is no basket in WMP12 and this is why I

Hi Ann,

1. Open wmp 12. There's in fact no need to press ctrl + 1 for library - if you
manually open wmp12 it opens in the library view, but if you open an audio
file,
so causing wmp to open and play the file it would then open in the playing view.
2. Initial focus is in the tree view. If album is selected that would be fine.
3. tab to the list of albums (this will probably be two tabs), and select the
album to burn. There's no need to open the album, you can just press ctrl + 8
to
add all the songs in the album to the burn list. (you can do this sort of thing

4. load a blank cd.
5. tab once to the start button and press it.

Additional note: if you want to change what's in the list (eg albums,
music(tracks), artist) then after selecting one of these in the tree view you
have to press enter for the contents of the list of whatever to change.

best of luck,

Re: [JAWS-Users] Burn CD with Media Player

2010-10-13 Thread Van Der Walt Riana
Dear Listers,

In Windows 7 Home premium, which I think per default comes with
windows media player version 12, the ripping options are really not that
much different from the previous version, if you set your view options
to the menu, not sure whether it's called classic menu, view.

As your settings are retained, once made, you can a next time, just
insert the cd and if you've set it to automatically rip the cd when
inserted, you won't even have to make any other changes, when ripping a
second cd.

However, if you do not specifically place a high premium on and prefer
to rip to wma lossless or CDA format and do not need your track and
album titles to be retrieved from the internet, you can use the switch
program to convert the songs to another format, even the same format
like mp3, just with a lower bitrate encoding, which will in effect also
rip the cd.

I cannot recall which version of switch you have to install to work on
windows 7, but if you try to install an earlier incompattible version,
it will tell you to download a relevant version from the webpage and
even open the page for you.

But, as far as I could figure out, you cannot burn with switch.

Regards,

Riana
