I am using Office 2003 and Jaws 7x and 8x. I need to find out the column
width and would like to do it in a faster way then going up to the menu bar,
opening
the column width dialog box and tabbing to that edit box. Is there a JAWS
command for announcing this information? I've tried Insert+Tab+Tab and
Insert+F
and I'm not obtaining the info I need.
Thanks,

Annette,

I just tried it and you are right. Can't believe I never noticed that
before. When you press insert-f while focused on merged cells, you get the
attributes of the first cell only. I know of no work-around for this
problem other than adding up the widths of the columns in which the cells
are merged.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Finding out column width in excel

2007-09-11 Thread Annette Carr
In both JAWS 7.x and 8.x, Insert+F1 does not provide any information about
column width. It appears that in JAWS 7.x, Insert+F includes info on the
size of the cell, and in JAWS 8.x the command is Insert+F+F for this same
info.

Insert-f1 gives you a document summary, including the width of the cell in
the table where your cursor is.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Finding out column width in excel

2007-09-11 Thread Annette Carr
Thank you very much for that info. I did not know about the Insert+f+f
command, nor have I ever been able to correlate points and inches, so the
info you provided will prove to be helpful.

After reading your message I tried out the Insert+f+f command and found out
that when you execute it on a set of merged cells, it still tells you only
the points for the single cell, and not for the entire height and width.
Have you found this to be the case?. Any ideas how to work around this?

Annette,

I am an engineer and use Excel daily (office 2003 /JFW 8). Excel measures
everything in points (printer's points). In JFW 8, pressing insert-f twice
quickly will describe the atributes of the active cell to you in a dialogue
box. One of the pieces of information provided is the height and width of
the cell in points, e.g., "cell dimentions are 54 points wide by 12 points
heigh." The number of characters you can fit in 54 points depends on the
font you have selected.

All cells in a column must be the same width. That's why there is no way to
individually adjust the width of a cell.

It is a quirk of Excel that you can enter a column width in number of
characters instead of points I guess this makes it easier for some people.
But, for the purposes of laying out a page, the only way you will be able to
know if everything fits widthwise is to add up the active column widths in
points. For a typical portrait layout with 3/4-in. margins, you have a
total width of 432 points to work with. For a landscape layout with the
same margins, you have a total of 684 points to work with.

Hope this clears things up for you.

One final note, in earlier versions of JAWS, you only need to press insert-f
once to hear the cell's attributes.

2007-09-11 Thread Annette Carr
Thank you for your reply. Yes, navigating to this dialog box is what I've
been doing, but I was hoping that there was a shorter way of accomplishing
this. I need to combine portions of 3 different Excel files, and I am
having problems with the varying column widths. I think that I have
approximately 45 cells that I need to check their width, and that is if I
only check it once per cell/column.

To find your column width, try this:
hold down Alt, then press O, to open format menu, then C, it says "column"
then W, it says the default width of column which is 8.43, then release Alt
key.
Press backspace if you want to delete the default settings to change your
desired width.
I'm still in Jaws 3.7 and Office 2000 and I don't have problem navigating
around Excel.
Hope this help.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Finding out column width in excel

2007-09-10 Thread Estelita
To find your column width, try this:
hold down Alt, then press O, to open format menu, then C, it says "column"
then W, it says the default width of column which is 8.43, then release Alt
key.
Press backspace if you want to delete the default settings to change your
desired width.
I'm still in Jaws 3.7 and Office 2000 and I don't have problem navigating
around Excel.
Hope this help.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Finding out column width in excel

2007-09-10 Thread Annette Carr
Insert F1 did bring up a JAWS window with information about the current file
and worksheet, but I could not find any information about column width. Am
I over looking it?

I've read over quite a bit in the JAWS help and could not find out anything
on finding out the width of a column or cell. I find it hard to believe
that there is not a JAWS command for obtaining this info.

Any other ideas?

Annette

Are you sure it's not just Insert F1? I think you'll find that Insert F1
pressed twice quickly will open the help topic associated with the
application. Hope that helps.

With the cursor in the column you want to know about, press
insert-f1-f1. That is, hold down insert---the Jawskey--and press f1
twice quickly. You will hear a ton of information in a virtual
window, and the width of the cell will be a part of it. Press escape
to escape the virtual window and return to your text.

[JAWS-Users] Finding out column width in excel

2007-09-09 Thread Annette Carr
I am using Office 2003 and Jaws 7x and 8x.  I need to find out the column
width and would like to do it in a faster way then going up to the menu bar,
opening
the column width dialog box and tabbing to that edit box.  Is there a JAWS
command for announcing this information?  I've tried Insert+Tab+Tab and
Insert+F
and I'm not obtaining the info I need.
Thanks,
Annette
