Hi, I'm aware that Hal has a layout specifically for JAWS users, but
that's all I can remember. Hope that helps.

Happy belated birthday David! Wow! A Capricorn just like me! I will
celebrate my birthday in 11 days and my last digit will also end with
a 9, but I won't tell you which decade. No, I am not as old as
Benjamin Franklin which is his birth date too.

Anyway, have a great birthday with good health and peace and joy.
Thanks so very, very much for your efforts in bringing us blind
people with wonderful information about Jaws and the computer. And
thanks to your lovely wife encouraging you to keep up with the
technology. If it wasn't for her, where would we be today?

Sorry to ramble, but I want to thank you and the people behind you
for your support.

2008-01-06 Thread James Scholes

I agree, the old versions were a bit strange in the way they handeled
certain things, but I know for a fact that the later versions of Hal and
Supernova are quite good as far as screen reading goes. But, I suppose that
its just a perssonal preference, I used Supernova as my screen reader for
many years successfully, however as I did not keep up to date with all of
the upgrades, it became unusable with newer things like IE 7. However I have
used the most up-to-date version, and it works just as well as any other
screen reader, if not better in some areas. But, that's just my opinion.

I agree here. I tried a demo of Hal once, and it wasn't very good on

gave up the demo after it decided to expire on me prematurely, and

Re: [JAWS-Users] Happy Birthday David ferrin

2008-01-06 Thread orhan deniz
oh right, so not window-eyes or hal.
well when i first started using computers, i had a screenreader called hal.
at that time, i virtually understood nothing about hal and the manual was so
complex.
and nothing would read properly.
i never knew that the map file (the script we call it in jaws) had to be
asociated with th program.
the map file was an exicutable and you had to asociate with the program.
strange for me at that time, this was 6 years ago.
anyway, a happy birthday as well.

2008-01-05 Thread Waqas Hussain
Greetings David,

Many many happy returns of the day!!!
Only 49? As on the subject, my Dad always refers to Coleridge's "Youth and
Age" that youth and age is in your mind no matter whether you are 49 or 79.
Try reading the great words of wisdom on the following website:
http://www.netpoets.com/classic/poems/016021.htm

And thanks for running this great resource for the entire blind humankind!

Thanks to everybody for the good wishes this day. In case anybody is
interested it's number 49 as a matter of fact. We all owe the creation of
this list ETC to my wife for first introducing me to JAWS back in 1996. She
didn't want me to be left behind in the world of technology and that's when
she made the discovery of the 30 day trial program that the then Henter
Joyce company offered for $39.95. Before meeting her I bought a screen
reader for $995 that was absolutely worthless and it made me very
discouraged regarding Windows and computers in general. There was no way in
the world I was going to pay for another such program without at least first
trying it out to see if it worked or not. The rest as they say is history,
between self teaching and learning from others who are much smarter than I
am I've learned what I know today. Also I must credit this list for forcing
me to learn a lot of new things like writing my own HTML code ETC. So to
celebrate I'm taking the day off, it's out to lunch and then just goofing
off this afternoon. Have a great day to all and thank you again.

2008-01-05 Thread orhan deniz
yes, james, you rase a good point.
i'm curious, what screenreader he used before.
I tell you, its window-eyes, because at that time, they did not have hal in
america.
in the UK, we have had it for ages.
i don't intend to offend anyone, but i really think hal is a really instable
and rubbish screenreader in terms of reading things properly.

orhan.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Happy Birthday David ferrin

2008-01-05 Thread Annette
Well David, you might be getting older, but with every passing day, the
lists that you run are getting better, thus reflecting back on you. Thanks
for all that you do for this list, and I hope you have a great day away from
your computer.

Oh by the way, 49 is not that old. You are just a little ahead of me.

Annette

Re: [JAWS-Users] Happy Birthday David ferrin

2008-01-05 Thread David Ferrin
