[JAWS-Users] How do I dismiss the Winamp Update message?

2009-10-25 Thread Dale Leavens
I have Winamp to play MP3 files and such. When I click on a file Winamp plays
the file alright but I cannot get to the application to start and stop or pause
or any of that because of this darn New Version message which will not be
dismissed. ALT-F4 doesn't kill it, there isn't a close option on the
Applications menu, there isn't a File menu or any other with a Close option,
there doesn't seem to be any way to get rid of it but to reboot. Second time in
a given day it doesn't appear and I can go to the application and use the
functions.

This really is Malware, an application which takes charge and will not be
terminated.

So far as I can tell, the only advantage to having the new update might be to
get rid of this notice and of course to fill up my computer with album art I
suppose.

Any help with this would be appreciated.

Dale Leavens.

Hi Dale,
Can you close it with control plus F4 or control tab to the main Winamp
window?
Also if it is the update prompt I'm thinking of you can go to General under
Preferences (control plus p followed by g until you hear "General
Preferences" and tab through and look for "Check for new versions of Winamp
at startup " and uncheck this box.

I hope that message apears in a form of dialog box. Just tab to no button
and hit enter key. The dialog box will disappear and your current position
will be on winamp and you will be able to close, pause and perform other
functions with the different commands assigned to that application.

Ranjana,

This is not a dialog box. I have been using Windows for well over a decade
now and I am very familiar with Dialog boxes and other methods of dismissing
programmes. This stupid thing doesn't even have a method of selecting to
download the update.

Thanks for trying but I would appreciate it if people don't know the issue
or don't have an answer that they keep the unnecessary list traffic to
themselves.

Thanks.

Hi Dale,

There is a winamp listif you want to join?

I'm not at my home pc at present to verify the address, but if I recall
correctly, one posts messages to:
winampforthebl...@freelists.org and perhaps each word in the username
starts with a capital letter.

If you can obtain the subscription syntax to a freelists list, you'd be
able to join.

Also, I believe Chris Holswith, who is also on this list, is also a
member of that list and is very knowledgeable about winamp.

ctrl+F4 DOESN'T work WITH THIS. . You probably need to ctrl-alt-del on
that window.

However, most of these updates are a good thing, because of security
holes, etc. So I'd let the update go through, or find it and install.
then uncheck the update Winamp at startup checkbox (which john has
mentioned).

2009-10-28 Thread Don and Cher Bosch
I finally did the update due to the same issue. The older versions of
WinAmp did not do this. For me the problem version was 5.514, I think. It
drove me crazy too- for all the same reasons- and unchecking the 'check for
updates at start-up' did nothing. Even though I would do that and close,
the next time I ran WinAmp, it would have defaulted back with 'check for
updates' checked once again.

No normal method to close ever worked for me. I would have to go to the
task manager which would always show WinAmp as 'not responding'. As I said
in a previous message, that one version, unchecking the 'check for updates'
would always revert back to checked the next time the program was started.

I agree and it never worked for me as well and I had to close the
program by going to the windows task manager. But of course the update
box appears only when you are connected to the internet. The annoying
thing is that they come out with an update at least thrice a month and
I wish that I could have an alternative to this annoying program.

I agree and it never worked for me as well and I had to close the program by
going to the windows task manager. But of course the update box appears only

Actually it does. Only issue could be it's functions being largely oriented
towards internet. But of course one can play files off-line as a guest user,
but it has some limitations. Although not sure of the exact limitations of the
guest user since I always used it online.

You might try using an older version, I am using both 2.8, and 5.04,
versions of Winamp,
with no problems whatsoever.
Of course, what you use will depend on what your particular audio needs are.
Trying to use one application for every need, is not always the best
solution.
There are alternatives to Winamp, on both:

That is why you go into winamp's main window, control + p, go to
general, and tab to updates and un check it. then you close and never
see it again.

Re: [JAWS-Users] How do I dismiss the Winamp Update message?

2009-10-29 Thread Dale Leavens

Well, none of the offered methods have worked for me.

Another odd thing is that I don't see where to download the update on the
site. I thought I had it but nothing happened.

Is there any particular reason why, after all these versions they haven't
decided to make the base version a standard Windows application? I mean,
there isn't any good reason why they could not have standard menu bars is
there?

That's very interesting- especially I have never had to do that with any
previous versions. Sounds like WinAmp is determined to force updates by
making it harder and harder to shut them down.

There is also a checkbox checked, , somewhere in the Preferences, probably
General although it's very late where I am now, where it says, "return to
Winamp defaults at start-up"; so you need to uncheck that one as well.

Hi Dale,
Can you close it with control plus F4 or control tab to the main
Winamp
window?
Also if it is the update prompt I'm thinking of you can go to
General
under
Preferences (control plus p followed by g until you hear "General
Preferences" and tab through and look for "Check for new versions of
Winamp
at startup " and uncheck this box.

Subject: [JAWS-Users] How do I dismiss the Winamp Update message?

I have Winamp to play MP3 files and such. When I click on a file
Winamp
plays the file alright but I cannot get to the application to start
and
stop
or pause or any of that because of this darn New Version message
which
will
not be dismissed. ALT-F4 doesn't kill it, there isn't a close option
on
the
Applications menu, there isn't a File menu or any other with a Close
option,
there doesn't seem to be any way to get rid of it but to reboot.
Second
time
in a given day it doesn't appear and I can go to the application and
use
the
functions.

This really is Malware, an application which takes charge and will
not be
terminated.

So far as I can tell, the only advantage to having the new update
might be
to get rid of this notice and of course to fill up my computer with
album
art I suppose.

Any help with this would be appreciated.

Dale Leavens.

2009-10-29 Thread Don and Cher Bosch
Dale- Is your version 5.41? That was when my problem with that screen
started. I have 5.33 and 5.4 if you want either.
