[JAWS-Users] How to select a sentence in Word 2016 while using JAWS

2018-02-27 Thread Adrian Spratt
Hi. Using Word 2010, I became dependent on the F8 key to select a sentence. It
doesn't work in 2016. At Google, I find a control-mouse click instruction, but
using the JAWS simulated mouse, it doesn't work. Has anyone found an
alternative keyboard command buried in Word 2016 for this operation?

I'm finding that the F8 keystroke works after all, but only so long as my PC
was only recently restarted. I guess it means more frequent rebooting.

Thanks, Justin. You confirm what I just discovered. It seems Word 2016 gets
tired more quickly than 2010 because on my system, it works only for a while.

Hi Adrian,

I guess you could always go old school keystrokes.

Selecting from the beginning of the line to the end:
Shift + End / 1 on the NumPad.

Selecting more than 1 line of text, if the sentence is more than 1 line:
Hold the Shift key down while arrowing up or down until you have
selected/highlighted the lines you want.

Take care.

Hi JM,

Yes, it is a Windows / Office command, & it's called, Extended Selection
Mode, at least that's what it's called in Office Word 2010. You press the
F8 key to toggle through the various options, pressing enter on the 1 you
want. If it doesn't speak you won't know which option to press enter on,
unless you've got the key presses memorized, & know which 1 to press enter
on. Someone that has had this command fail would have to explain what
happens when it fails / quits working. I always select text with
keystrokes, & rarely use the F keys options, so I've never had it fail for
me.

Take care. Mike. Sent from my iBarstool.

Re: [JAWS-Users] How to select a sentence in Word 2016 while using JAWS

2018-02-27 Thread Adrian Spratt
I see the confusion. Unlike in Word 2010, JAWS never speaks the "select word,"
"Select sentence," etc. commands as you cycle through the F8 options while in
Word 2016, at least on my system. Yes, it's a Word command. However, after I've
been up and running for a while, the commands stop functioning. I'm assuming
the problem lies with the interaction between Word 2016 and JAWS, but I could
be wrong.

Take care.

I'm finding that the F8 keystroke works after all, but only so long as my PC

Hi. Using Word 2010, I became dependent on the F8 key to select a sentence.
It doesn't work in 2016. At Google, I find a control-mouse click instruction,
but using the JAWS simulated mouse, it doesn't work. Has anyone found an
alternative keyboard command buried in Word 2016 for this operation?

I see the confusion. Unlike in Word 2010, JAWS never speaks the "select
word," "Select sentence," etc. commands as you cycle through the F8 options
while in Word 2016, at least on my system. Yes, it's a Word command.
However, after I've been up and running for a while, the commands stop
functioning. I'm assuming the problem lies with the interaction between Word
2016 and JAWS, but I could be wrong.

Hello All,

Something that I have tried in the past but has only recently worked is to
select multiple sentences by first pressing F8 to get into selection mode,
then using the JAWS command to move by sentence (JAWS Key+Down Arrow). The
only real issue is that every time you add a new sentence to select, JAWS
reads from the beginning of the first selected sentence through the
sentences just added. Still, it is convenient if there is a need to select
multiple consecutive sentences.

Subject: [JAWS-Users] How to select a sentence in Word 2016 while using JAWS

Everyone seems to have their own methods for selecting sentences. The
way I do it is to insert a temporary PlaceMarker at the beginning of
the selection with CTRL+WINDOWS+K, then I go to the end of the
selection and press INSERT+SPACEBAR, M.

This works, but it involves more moving around. With the F8 method, you simply
place focus inside the sentence. Your method works very nicely for longer
blocks of text.

Brian, thanks again for this information. I can't get F8 to work this morning,
but your keystroke sequence does. Yes, it works in 2016 the way you describe in
2013.

Hello Adrian,

If you use the CTRL and simulated left mouse click you need to first route the
JAWS cursor to the PC cursor. It does work for me in Word 2013. Before you
can do the action following the selection you need to put PC cursor back
on.

Take care.

All select commands are wonderful, but that one specifically for a sentence
was, and still is when JAWS isn't tired and cranky, the best.

Take care.
Mike

I'm finding that the F8 keystroke works after all, but only so long as my PC
was only recently restarted. I guess it means more frequent rebooting.
