Re: [JAWS-Users] jaws2018 and libre office or open office?

2018-05-26 Thread JM Casey
HI.

It will work well with Apache Openoffice. LibreOffice is a more regularly
updated suite, but I understand it has some accessibility issues; the
developers seem much more interested in working with NVDA than with JAWS
from what I can tell. I have recently used Openoffice Writer, at least, with
JAWS, and am pretty happy with it. I believe the database and spreadsheet
software also work ok, although I haven't gone that far into them.

Whether you want to use Google Office probably depends on whether you enjoy
the functionality of the "live office" type scenario. I myself much prefer
not having to rely on the Internet and browsers for such things, but if you
feel that's the way of the future, give it a try and see how you like it.

Hi,
Does jaws2018 work good either with libre office or openoffice? Or if I want
a free office to use with jaws home edition, is it best to just use google
chrome and google office?

[JAWS-Users] jaws2018 crashing in windows10 mail app

2018-05-22 Thread Josh Kennedy
Hi
Sometimes when entering into a message to read it, then if I hit alt for the
ribbon, arrow right to reply all, hit enter, jaws crashes when the message edit
window opens. Has anyone else experienced this? I hope it will be fixed in the
next jaws version.

Oh I am so glad to hear that others love WLM as I do and I also will
continue to use it as long as possible. This current issue is, to me, a
minor annoyance compared to any other email client I have tried. and I think
I have tried just about all of them.

Re: [JAWS-Users] JAWS2018 And Multiple Sound Cards

2018-04-24 Thread Mike Mote
Hi there! As long as the device you want JAWS to default to is available,
it should use that device every time. If for some reason, Windows doesn't
load the drivers, JAWS may not see that the sound device is available, and
will then look for another device.

I Tend to use multiple sound cards.
I Always want the JAWS feedback to go through the laptop speakers as it is in
front of me and the other sounds to go through the speakers on the docking
station or the bluetooth speaker when I switch it on.
Sometimes when I change sound cards, JAWS will then try to jump back on to the
default sound card, I think it is getting confused when I switch things around.
Has anyone come across these issues?

Hi, Dennis. If there has been a Jaws update, the check for updates feature
is once again not working properly. The last time I checked the website for
an update, there wasn't an update yet. I don't think you missed an update.
I just wish that the please wait not responding message when a customer
tries to check for updates in the help section wouldn't come up so often. I
hate having to check the website for an update when the check for updates
feature won't work properly. Thanks.

Re: [JAWS-Users] JAWS2018 & Windows10 -Login & BitLocker

2017-12-12 Thread amcarr1
I am using Jaws 2018 build 1710.42. It did improve some issues on my
personal laptop, but has done nothing to address issues at work. I heard
that there was an update that came out today. I'll give it a try, but I
really think it has more to do with the security policies at work.

Thanks,
Annette

Subject: [JAWS-Users] JAWS2018 & Windows10 -Login & BitLocker

Hi All,

We are continuing to have problems with logging into the Windows10 Dell 7440
test machine at work. Frequently JAWS appears to be clipped when it
initially launches prior to the login screen. When this happens, JAWS does
not come back until after the user has logged in and they are on the
desktop. So one thing I am asking that IT look at is the launch order. Am
I barking up an empty tree? Is there a way to change this order?

I've been attempting to use Control+Windows+Enter to turn on Narrator at the
login screen, but it will not launch.

In addition, sometimes BitLocker comes up and wants some type of action from
the user. Besides figuring out what is triggering what now appears to be a
random launching of BitLocker, I am looking for any tips on how a JAWS user
can get through BitLocker when it does come up. I'm guessing that there is
not a solution.

Thanks,

Annette

There was a Jaws 2018 update pushed out this morning which among other

Hi,
A few questions:
* Is this really a Windows 10 Version 170x machine? The new Narrator command
is available from 1703 onwards. If Control+Windows+Enter doesn't work, try
Windows+Enter.
* Sounds like BitLocker (Pro and higher) is told to prompt you for a pin or
a USB drive. In this case, screen readers may not be available at that
prompt. The only way to circumvent this is turning off BitLocker completely
9unless your organization's policy says otherwise).
I'll forward this to another list to see if folks there have any answers.
Cheers,

[JAWS-Users] JAWS2018 Not Playing Nice with Office Spell Check

2017-11-26 Thread amcarr1
Hello All,

I am using Windows10 Professional, OfficePro2016 and JAWS2018 Professional.
I am having significant trouble with getting JAWS to read the various
components of the spell check dialog in both Outlook and Word. Sometimes it
reads nothings, sometimes it reads as I am tabbing through the dialog box
and other times it does not. It rarely reads items in the same order when
it does talk while tabbing. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to
improve or better yet, correct this problem?

Thanks,

Annette

Hi,
Just to let you know there are settings in Edge and also there is a favorite
list. The problem is with Edge you don't get to them like you do in IE. I
will post below a tutorial by David Moore on Edge using Narrator. But a lot
of the keys for Narrator will work with Jaws 2018.

Hi all,
Microsoft Edge works so well with Narrator, that I decided to do a tutorial
on it for you guys.
Narrator works just as well with Edge as JAWS does in other browsers.
This tutorial is written very simply, and I tell you everything Narrator
says each time I press Tab and other keys.
Please enjoy and give me as much feed back as you can.
Here is the tutorial pasted in this message right now!
Tutorial for Microsoft Edge
I will write this tutorial using Narrator only.
I am using the latest public build of Windows 10 Creators update.
If you are using anything different than that, you might get different
results.
When you can press spacebar or enter, I will list them both.
If I only list enter, that means that you can only use enter.
If I only list Spacebar, that means that you can only press spacebar to
toggle something, for example.
Also, unless you are reading what is on a web site, make sure that you have
scan mode turnned off with Narrator. For example, when we go through the
settings, and you are pressing spacebar or enter, scan mode must be off.
Remember, Pressing Caps Lock+Spacebar, toggles scan mode on and off.
That is very important. Please read Jim's tutorial on using Narrator in the
creators update of Windows 10.
I have a list of all key commands for Edge at the end of this tutorial.
Through the tutorial, I will point out many key commands as well, as I go.

Section Number One
Opening the Edge Browser:
Press the Windows key or CTRL+Escape, to open the start area. Next, type
Edge and enter when Narrator announces it.
Press enter, and the Edge browser should open.

Section Number Two
Opening the Freedom Scientific Web Site:
I pressed CTRL+L (alt+D works as well) and entered:
www.freedomscientific.com
That is the site for Freedom Scientific.
The web site came up very quickly.
I can use all navigation keys, like H for heading, C for Combo Box, E for
edit area, , for example, just like other browsers, and they all work.
Section Three
Pressing alt+X to get a large Virticle Menu:
Now, I will now press ALT+X to open the settings and more menu! This is to
the right of the address bar, but Alt+X opens this same menu. We have a lot
in this virticle menu.a large virticle menu of choices. When I down arrow, I
here the following:
New Window (CTRL+N), New InPrivate Window (CTRL+SHIFT+P), Zoom out, Zoom in,
Cast media to device, Find on page, Print, Pin this page to Start, F12
Developer Tools, Open with Internet Explorer, Send feedback, Extensions,
What's new and Tips, and finally, Settings. Extensions and Settings are the
main two choices we are interested in with this menu. Key commands will do
the rest.
Next, I will talk about settings.
Section Four:
Navigating settings and Advance settings:
Press alt+X again, and up arrow once to settings, because that is the last
choice.
Press enter on settings.
You will hear:
Choose a Theme light.
Don't worry about that!
Tab once, and you will hear:
Open Microsoft Edge with a page or set of pages combo box.
This is how you choose how you want Microsoft Edge to open.
I have mine set to a specific page or pages.
Now, Tab again, and you have an edit field where you can type in your pages
that you want opened When Microsoft Edge is launched.
I just entered:
www.google.com
Therefore, when I start Edge, the Google home page opens for me.
Tabbing again:
I hear delete button, where you can press spacebar or enter to delete your
page or pages.
Tabbing again, I hear Add Button, where you can press spacebar or enter and
add another page that you want to open when Edge is started.
Tabbing again, I hear:
Open new tabs with combo box.
I have this set to a blank page.
Tab again, and you will hear:
Import from another browser button.
You can press spacebar or enter here to import all favorites and settings
from other browsers you use, like IE 11 or Chrome, or Firefox.
Tab again, and you will hear:
Show the favorites bar toggle.
I have this unchecked, because I do not want everyone to see my favorites on
a bar right on the Edge Window. Press spacebar to check or uncheck..
Tab again, and you hear:
Choose what to clear.
If you press spacebar on this, you can tab and check or uncheck what is
cleared when you delete your history. You can also choose whether this
should be cleared every time you close the Edge browser.
Tab, and you will either hear Account Settings or your MSA account link,
depending

New OCR features that are very much worth it especially if you can't find your

Web verbosity settings which I have not played with much.

Minor problems with Outlook 2016 reading messages, but no different than I

When Jaws is on low verbosity it automatically reads what radio button is
checked on a website when you check it. I want this on medium but can't
figure out what is checked on low verbosity that is making this happen any
help is appreciated.

verbosity settings

Hi Dennis,

See if what you need is in this note from what's new:
New Verbosity Options for the Virtual Cursor

When reading content using the Virtual Cursor, JAWS alerts you to the
beginning and end of various elements such as lists, tables, and regions.
With JAWS
support for ARIA continuing to improve and web developers becoming more
aware of accessible design, the amount of extra information provided by the
Virtual Cursor can become overwhelming when you just want to focus on the
page content. To make it easier to determine what is spoken, JAWS now offers
three levels of verbosity for the Virtual Cursor, giving you control over
how much detail you want to hear when reading various web content. The three
levels are:

list of 3 items
. High - JAWS speaks the most information about elements on the page or
inside a document. Everything is announced at this level.
. Medium - This level is configured to provide the best user experience on
most pages and documents and is the default verbosity level.
. Low - JAWS speaks as little structural information as possible about the
elements on a page or inside a document.
list end

To choose a verbosity level, do the following:

list of 5 items
1. Press INSERT+F2, and select Settings Center.
2. In the Search edit box, type "web verbosity" without the quotes.
3. Press DOWN ARROW to move to "Verbosity Level" in the filtered search
results in the tree view.
4. Press SPACEBAR to choose the level you want.
5. Press ENTER to save your change and close Settings Center.
list end

You can also choose a Virtual Cursor verbosity level to be active for a
specific website. From the website where you want to use a different
verbosity level, press INSERT+V to open Quick Settings, navigate to the
Personalized Web Settings group, and press SPACEBAR on Verbosity Level to
choose the verbosity level you want for the current site.

Each verbosity level is preset to provide the most optimal experience.
However, just like with speech verbosity, each level can be further
customized to give only the information you want to hear. For example, you
may want to continue using the default Medium verbosity level, but you may
want JAWS to announce a couple more elements that are not spoken by default
at this level.

To customize a verbosity level, open Settings Center, expand the
Web/HTML/PDFs group, expand the Reading group, and expand the Configure
Verbosity Levels group. Next, press the SPACEBAR on the verbosity level you
want to customize. A dialog box opens containing a tree view listing the
structural elements that can be announced by the Virtual Cursor. Use the
SPACEBAR to select or clear an element and then choose OK to save your
changes.

Take care. Mike. Go Dodgers!
