I have thus far had no trouble with spell check in Outlook or
Word 2016, but when I was in Word XP it would sometimes switch to Spanish,
not just for me but other coworkers.

Hello all- I had the chance to try out a PC with Windows 10 and Ms Word 2016
and when I tried using the Spell Check feature, which used to be a simple
task, it was a mess for me. In previous versions I simply pressed F7 and I
was off going through my doc. I have not tried using spell check lately so
can anybody tell me if it has improved in 2016 or which version of Word I
would need to use to have a working spell check? I do a lot of writing and I
do not want spell or grammar check while I am writing and want to go back to
correct and edit later without all sorts of extra options.

How odd, I have used Word since 97 and am now in Office 365 and spell check
seems to work mostly the same from when I started using Word in 1998 until
now, always great except it does not have medical words and since I am
retired I have not updated the medical speller addition.

This is very interesting.
I am using Jaws 2018 with Word 2016, but I am using Office 365 version, so
there could be incremental updates to the spell checker.
When pressing F7, Jaws says the misspelled word, I can then tab to Read
Sentence, and finally, a list of suggestions is shown, along with synonyms,
just so that you can make sure you are choosing the correct word. You can
use up and down arros to navigate the list of suggestions.
Then, after pressing enter, the next misspelled word is spoken, and I can
just tab to the list of choices again.
I find it to be a very seamless experience, and a vast improvement over the
spell check in Office 2013.

This is good news because the earlier versions of Spell Check in 2016 did
not work that way. They went bac to F7 andtabbing and that should be good
news. I'll have to check it out.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Spell Check in MS Word 2016

2018-06-05 Thread Adrian Spratt
Annette,

As in previous versions, JAWS key+c still reads the spell-checked word in
context when you're in Word 2016. However, when in an Outlook 2016 email, it
doesn't. In that case, the "say line" command works.

I'm having no problem getting spell-check to accept "c" on my system, and I'm
not experiencing any delays involving JAWS and spell-checker. I have Windows 7,
latest release of JAWS 2018 and, again, Office 2016.

Spell check in Word is a bit tempormental. As already stated, you cannot use
the Alt key combination to change, ignore, etc, but it still works in Outlook.
I find that when in Word just pressing the letter C for Change, etc. does not
work. I then resort to Tabbing to the button I want and pressing Enter.
Sometimes this does not work as there is a significant delay in getting a
response to executing a command. I resort to pressing Escape and start over.

Does anyone have an idea on how to get the spell check to read the word in
context? I resort to exiting out of spell check, and navigating around the
document or message until I find something that seems to be the word in
question.

Wayne,

You seem to be asking at least two questions. First, spell-checker does work in
Word 2016, but it operates a little differently. For example, to accept a
changed spelling, I press the letter "c" alone instead of alt-c. MS Word
2016 calls the alt key in this context an "accelerator."

Second, you can stop Word from making corrections as you type. Press alt-f,
then t, then arrow down to "proofing." From here, you tab through the options.
I suggest tabbing through all of them to find out what they are before you
start making changes.

Note: Although Word on my system requires that I not use the alt key when using
the spell-checker, spell-checker works as before when I'm in Outlook 2016. I
have Outlook set to use Word when I write messages, so it's possible there are
settings in Word that I haven't explored. But except for the alt key and some
other variations, I find Word 2016's spell-checker works just fine.

Kind of. It said that the spell-checker is built into Win7, which is what I
found out when I tried to open the .exe file.

Incidentally, what I do when spelling really matters on a form in IE is
write the text in Word, spell-check it there, then copy and paste into the

Yes, your earlier message did post. I remember wondering what you meant by
"rading," and here it is again. I guess it means "reading." I've previously
posted the procedure for opening PDF files outside a browser, in which case the
browser doesn't matter. If you open a PDF file in a browser, lots of factors
come into play, such as whether you've installed a PDF reader add-on, whether
you use an OCR converter, which OCR converter you use, and so on. But I've
found that opening a PDF file in Adobe rather than a browser makes for a much
better experience all round.

Hi,

I fail to see how this question has any more relevance than one that I tried to
get the answer to a few days ago? I did not see my post make it to thje list,
so I surmised that it was squelched for content. If that was not the case,
then I apologize and here is my question again.

Does JAWS do a better job of rading pdf files in adobe than it does in IE ore
firefox?

Well, welcome to the club. I have exactly the same issue that you do. I have

that browser to spell check. I do not think that you can have IE spell check,

I would absolutely love it if I could spell check in IE, because that is the

Hello all:

Using windows 8.1-64, latest Jaws16 and IE11.

Could someone please tell me if there is a Spellcheck for IE11? I tired looking
in the internet, but there seems to no be one.

Someone asked about this in the microsoft community, and someone answered them
to check in control panel misspelled and another option regarding the suabject.
Mine are checked, but it doesn’t check my spelling. Could it be that Jaws
doen’t detect mistakes in this case?

I managed to find spell checks in English and Spanish for FireFox, but not for
IE11.

Thank you in advance.

2016-07-22 Thread Adrian Spratt
Yes, your earlier message did post. I remember wondering what you meant by
"rading," and here it is again. I guess it means "reading." I've previously
posted the procedure for opening PDF files outside a browser, in which case the
browser doesn't matter. If you open a PDF file in a browser, lots of factors
come into play, such as whether you've installed a PDF reader add-on, whether
you use an OCR converter, which OCR converter you use, and so on. But I've
found that opening a PDF file in Adobe rather than a browser makes for a much
better experience all round.

2016-07-22 Thread Kimsan
I found another program for spell checking on the internet, and it's called
speckie. http://speckie.com/

The only thing I don't like about it as one would need to know what the
misspelled word is, unless you have some sight, wait a minute hahah, I just
remembered you could have jaws indicate a misspelled word, so when you hear
that, focus on the word, bring up the context menu and press enter on the
correct spelling.

If you look at each filename and the explanatory list beneath that list,
you'll see the one you want (English) has "en" after the second dash. The
first in the list I looked at had "ar" for Arabic after this dash.

Subject: [JAWS-Users] Spell check for IE 11

Best regards,

Teresa Arroyo Llosa

Hi Adrian,
That is very interesting. I never saw the "Ar," I will try this again, and
look for the ones that say "EN," like you said!

Thanks a lot for that observation.

If you look at each filename and the explanatory list beneath that list,
you'll see the one you want (English) has "en" after the second dash. The
first in the list I looked at had "ar" for Arabic after this dash.

Hi all,
There were many dictionaries to choose from by checking a box. I chose the
first one, over 7 Meg, and when I tried to install it, it said that this
program is not applicable for your computer. I am running win10 1511 build

64 bit with IE 11. Are there some dictionaries, I wonder, that work for
win10 but not others. There is a huge list of dictionaries you can check and
download. We will have to play around with this some more. Let us see what
we can all get together and do so we can spell check in IE11.

Take care.

Kimsan, thanks for this. However, after I downloaded the program, MS
notified me that it's already installed on my system. It begs the question
how do I make it work? I mean, it's nice to have, but I didn't download it

[JAWS-Users] spell check in windows live mail 2011

2015-10-02 Thread Peter Tighe
I find that in windows live mail 2011 in spell check settings, when I uncheck
“The original text in a reply or forward”
Jaws still spell checks the replied to or forwarded document.

It seems to me that when this setting is unchecked, Jaws should spell check
only the main document.

Is there any solution to this problem?

Thanks,

Peter

If you know you have past the new part you wrote you can cancel out of the

[JAWS-Users] Spell check

Hey Gang,
I'm running XP, office 2003, jaws 13.638.
When I check my spelling by f7, and there is a word that is right, but the
dictionary says no, and I want to add it to my dictionary, but when I'm
tabbing to add it that options isn't there. I've tried alt D, and alt A but
no luck.
How can I get it back in the tab line?
I've looked in the options, but I don't see anything.
I just did a spell-check in this email, and the option to add to the
dictionary is there, but it isn't in my office 2003 word.
Thanks for all the help you can give me.

Re: [JAWS-Users] spell check

2011-11-05 Thread Lois Butterfield

Hi,

What you need to do is, go to options with control shift O. Then, use
control tab to go to the spelling tab. There you need to check 2 check
boxes. You probably already have the first one you need already checked.
the second one you need to check is, check spelling while I type. If you
check that and then tab to okay and space, you will have your spell check
back.

Good luck.

Lois

[JAWS-Users] spell check, wlm

2011-08-31 Thread David Hardingham
Hi all,

I use win 7, jaws latest. I had to type a long e mail and when done I tried
spell check. all went well until the spell check just quit and the message was
routed to sent items and was mailed.

When I found it in spent items I could only read the first paragraph and no
more. Where the whole thing went and why it was sent when I did not hit the
send button is a mystry to me.

Anyone ever have this issue, this is not the first time this has happened with
a long e mail.

Try checking your spelling settings as this seems like the spell check is
used and when there are no more mistakes it will automatically send if the
check box is chosen this way.

To get to the spelling page do the following:
control shift o opens the options menus
control tab about 7 times to get to the spelling page and then tab from
there keeping in mind the choices!

Good luck

You can hit control+s at any time while your typing your message and it will
be saved in your drafts folder and you can either come back to it later or
save it periodically in case of a crash. Hope this helps.

[JAWS-Users] Spell check has quit working in windows mail and it's a jaws issue I think.

2009-11-21 Thread jim rawls
I had to uninstall jaws and when I reinstalled it again, from the disk, spell
check quit working in windows live mail. when I hit F 7 now, jaws qwill say,
blank, no suggestions, for every error there is in spelling. How can I fix
this? I am running windows 7 and jaws 11.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Spell check and upper case.

2009-04-15 Thread Victoria Vaughan
If you're looking for a spell checker, without needing to buy one, since you
have JAWS, can't you use HJ Pad? There, you could write your document and
spell check it and save it. You could then save that document in any word
processor you want.

Hope that helps.

Spell check will not check upper case; there is probably someone on this
list who knows how to change that setting to permit spell checking in upper
case.

If you need a free spell checker for Outlook Express, go to the JAWS Users
programs page and check out items 14, 20 and 22 under the heading Email and

A spell checker is usually included in a word processor or email client.
It

is not offered as part of JAWS or XP.

Subject: [JAWS-Users] Spell check and upper case.

Hi folks,

This morning I created a list of items typed in upper case
in MS-Word XP and when I went to spell check my work Jaws
announced that the spell check was complete and clearly
there were some words that were not spelled correctly.
I entered a purposely misspelled word in lower case and the
spell checker caught it.
Any ideas what might be going on and how to fix it?
I am using Jaws 9.latest, Office-XP and Windows XP-Pro.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Spell check and upper case.

2009-04-10 Thread Robert kingett
what u do is go into spelling preferences, and there will b a check box that
says ignore words in upper case. make sure that is unchecked, and it will
then look at words in caps. i dont know how to get there with jaws because i
dont use jaws all the time, but just go to options in ms word, then go to
spelling.

Hi Michelle,

To spellcheck an individual word with Jaws you,
1. High light the word you would like to spellcheck by placing the cursor at
the beginning of the word and high light/select with either the keystroke
control, shift, + right arrow or insert/Jaws key, shift, + right arrow.
2. Press the F7 key.
I hope this has answered your question. Take care.

[JAWS-Users] Spell check

2007-10-28 Thread Phyllis Stevens
Houston,
we have a problem!
I like to check spelling in OE before sending, and apparently XP's new
word has decided that OE's spell check has to be French, so it says
every word is wrong, or makes suggestions, for the simplist of words,
that I did not spell wrong! As I said in an earlier message, which no
one has replied to, I have a new Del Inspiron 530 with service pack
three on it and am using jaws eight!
Has anyone a suggestion on how to fix this probelm?

I think your nomenclature is off. Which service pack 3 do you mean?
Windows XP is still on SP2. Anyway, you need a separate spell-checker for
OE. (there may be some - such as SpellOE - on the JAWS-user Website?
