Hi, it sounds more like a jfw related problem, she could try reinstalling jaws or possibly trying a demo of a later version of jaws, just to check that it is a jaws problem and not a problem with windows and/or her keyboard. Re: [JAWS-Users] Start menu problem
I think I'd start by checking the properties of my start menu in the taskbar settings. I suspect something's messed up there that can be fixed in a keystroke or two that would solve the problem. If working in assistive technology has taught me anything at all, (and I suppose my critics would argue that it hasn't taught me much), I'd say it's taught me to start simple! I can't emphasize that enough. I've seen people jerk their sound cards out of a machine when the only problem was their speakers had come unplugged from the AC wall outlet. I don't recall what operating system Patty's fridnd uses--Win 2k perhaps--but please start by right-clicking in the taskbar and looking at the properties. You probably want something like classic start menu or whatever. I don't have a machine running Win 2k here, so I can't be as specific as I'd like, Nolan Nolan Crabb Director of Assistive Technology The Ohio State University 2054 Drake Center, 1849 Cannon Dr., Columbus, OH 43210 Ph. Re: [JAWS-Users] Start menu problem
Almost forgot, have you actually confirmed with sighted assistance whether the start menu is actually opening or not, and Jaws just isn't reading the highlighted item? Try changing your say all setting to all, or highlighted by doing the keystroke of insert+S, and see what is actually happening when you press the start menu. Re: [JAWS-Users] Start menu problem
Hi Folks, Just my opinion, but providing another keystroke for opening the start menu only provides a bandaged approach to the problem, and doesn't really address the underlying problem of why the start menu won't open in the first place. Have you checked your settings for Jaws and windows? Have you ensured that your display settings are set accordingly? I think you have to check your settings first, then tackle other possible solutions if those don't fix it. Re: [JAWS-Users] Start menu problem
I don't know if this will work in JAWS 4.5, but you can give it a try. Press Windows key+M to minimize all applications, and focus JAWS on the desktop. Press Tab until you hear JAWS announce Start, or something like that. Now press Enter to open the start menu. Thanks for your help. Patti I have a question I'm hoping you might help me with. I'm still stuck with JAWS 4.51, IE 6 and windows 2000. Most of the time my start menu won't open using the windows key. It just says "start button; press enter to open" but will not open anything. I know that programs is the second P on this menu but pressing P twice and entering does nothing. Luckily, if I want to shut down the computer/or restart, if I arrow up once and enter, it does bring up that box. If you have any suggestions, I'd sure appreciate them. Thanks for your time. Re: [JAWS-Users] Start menu problem
Well, not that I know of. There is probably a command she could type in the run dialogue, but if she can't get the start menu to open, then it wouldn't do her a lot of good. She could try changing keyboards and see if that helps. Denny Huff Gateway FT Blind. LLC. (636) 262-1383 Having problems using Office 2007?
