Re: [JAWS-Users] if you are not ready for windows 10 beware of windows update
I'm sorry but I cannot afford to have 2 laptops. I'm glad you have the finances to own multiple laptops affording you the ability of upgrading to Windows 10, but for someone like myself it just isn't feasible. I'm using Windows 7 Home (64 Bit) with latest build of JAWS 17 and a TripleTalk USB hardware synth, and I'm experiencing zero issues. My All-in-1 Epson printer/scanner/copier works. My WD 2 TB USB hard drive work. My duel layer DVD burner works... in other words nothing is broke, so I'm not in a rush to change anything. I'm not a computer/software programmer so I have no idea what a "Faster OS" mean. All I know is when I open an application or visit a page on the web,, my PC does the job and does it well. So please don't look at people hesitant about upgrading to Windows 10 as "Cavemen living in the stone age" for in this instance there is absolutely nothing wrong with that. Continued fortune with your experience with Windows 10. When I feel the time is right and feel comfortable enough to take my flawlessly working Windows 7 PC down the road of uncertainty, I'll upgrade. That won't be anytime soon though. LOL! Well, there's never an iron-clad guarantee that something may not go wrong in any update process. In fact, the most common advise you see is to back up your important data before undertaking any major update. And most people regularly update their important data, don't they! So you would first have to upgrade to Windows 10 to determine whether Windows 10 drivers were actually available for your printer. Of course, you could search for third-party Windows 10 drivers for your printer before you upgrade to Windows 10, but this is generally not recommended, as the reliability of such drivers is often suspect. And before you think that you can just rush out and buy a new printer if you are unable to find Windows 10 drivers for your old one, keep in mind that many, if not most, new printers, no longer come with tactile, rocker power switches, and often require sighted assistance to set up and operate because they have LCD display screens whose menu options are often totally inaccessible. The same is true for scanners and all-in-one units. So again, proceed with caution. There is no hurry to upgrade to Windows 10, since Windows 7 will be supported until early 2020. Even Eric Damery has recommended that JAWS users wait awhile before upgrading. Gerald -Original Message- From: K. I agree. 2 of the Win 10 computers in the house we had to go and find the drivers for the printer. I have upgraded 1 of my computers and the other 1 I am not for various reasons, it's my choose to do so or not. This thread is going on forever. It's simple Microsoft wants everyone on 10 and is going to push it on you unless you change your settings and get rid of it. Some use it and it is fine and some don't want to use it. I hope we can end this argument about it soon. We all know what's going to or could happen if we don't change update settings. Microsoft shouldn't be pushing it but they are and we can't do anything about that. There are many reasons that one may not want to upgrade and so let them make their own decision. No one should be criticized for choosing to upgrade or not to upgrade. I am annoyed that Microsoft has taken this approach to force it on us, but that is not my reason for not upgrading. My primary reason is that my employer will not be upgrading to Windows10 anytime soon. As I grow older and wiser, I've decided that it is not worth my time and effort to be running different computer setups at work and home. There was a time in my life when I was simultaneously proficient in using Apple IIe, Apple GS, Apple Mac, and Windows 3.5, as well as able to write computer code in 4 different programming languages. I now leave the multi-platform use to others of you on this list. I monitor the information shared on this list and tuck it away (or search the archives) when I do need the knowledge. In addition, I'm pretty sure that when I do make the decision to upgrade at home, I will be faced with looking for a new printer and scanner. As best as I can tell neither will be supported in Windows10, but since I've been using them since WindowsXP I am well due for replacements of these devices. So my holiday which for this list is to continue to see useful information being shared on this list and no more criticism of people's personal decisions. Here's a thought. We have until 2020 to use a fully supported Win7 which works with few problems. I prefer to use the computer as a productivity tool and will leave upgrade headaches to others. When I find that Win10 has enhancements which will materially help me in my work, then I'll consider upgrading. Meanwhile the status quo serves me fine. My job gives me challenges enough. Re: [JAWS-Users] if you are not ready for windows 10 beware of windows update
Hi. You have to goto the Windows Update, Installed updates, and remove the kb2952664, kb3035583, and kb3112343. Don't restart the computer between each removal, but remove all 3 updates before restart. When the computer is Restarted, goto the Windows Update, and search for updates, but don't install the updates, but goto the Recommended updates link, and see, that the just removed updates again is ready for install. Uncheck the checkbox by each of these updates, and use the contextmenu button to get acces to the "Hide update". When these 3 updates are unchecked and hided, Win10 should no longer be able to install automatically. sorry Gerald I meant Mario, Yes I remember you saying to uninstall KB 3,35,583 and I did but I left automatic updates on. so my question is now with that update missing will windows 10 still be able to install without me knowing or my permission ? Re: [JAWS-Users] if you are not ready for windows 10 beware of windows update Anna, In the past, I've suggested to uninstall KB3035583, and then hide it upon checking for updates, but I think what Gerald is implying is that if you leave the settings on windows updates to be performed automatically, you won't have any control as to what gets updated. I never download recommended because I chinstruct Windows to check for updates and let me decide whether to download and install. If the Win 10 install is an important upgrade, then you'd have to go into the details of each upgrade that is connected to the operating system, not to your other apps like Word, Defender, etc. There is a link to more information. The process can be enlightening if you care for that kind of detail. This said, the Win 10 income in the systems tray came as an important update..I did not scrutinize the important updates. And so I warily proceed. Re: [JAWS-Users] if your not ready for windows 10 beware of windows update To prevent Windows 10 from being installed surreptitiously on your PC without your knowledge, go to Change Settings in the Windows Update dialog, and in the combo box choose the option labeled "check for updates but let me choose whether to download and install them." Also, uncheck the box labeled "get recommended updates the same way I receive important updates." It is twice as fast, JAWS and NVDA work with it great, and it is much easier to navigate. You also have cortana which obeys your commands to do things on the computer for you and to answer many questions. I and many many JAWS and NVDA users have already upgraded to win10 and love it and will never look back. Please quit being afraid to explore the unknown. It just might be 10 times more rewarding when you finally get the nerve to explore and find your reward. Have a good one. -Original Message- From: Bobb Wiley Sent: Thursday, December 3, 2015 10:02 AM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] If you're not ready for Win10,beware of Windows Update Thanks for the heads up on this. The automatic update brought up a screen about downloading Win10. MS had downloaded Win10 months ago, but this screen made me question what I knew. There were 2 options- "download and upgrade" and "download but do not upgrade". I selected the last option- thinking that either I had been mistaken about Win10 already being fully downloaded or that the major updates to Win10 required a new download of Win10. However, after the download, I started seeing a 'preparing to install' message and this morning was presented with a license accept screen. I called the accessibility desk to uninstall and hide this update. I don't plan on installing till early spring when I will have more time. [JAWS-Users] if you are not ready for windows 10 beware of windows update
Thanks Donny I think I know which one it is but I am not quite sure. since I am using windows 8.1 I think it is 3,112,336 but I can not be quite sure because it has not put a message in my system tray like yours did. as of yet. but I have a feeling that it will not do anything because I got rid of the update that started this whole mess in the first place which was KB3,035,583 I will keep an eye on it anyway Thanks again Re: [JAWS-Users] [Bulk] if you're not ready for windows 10 beware of windows update Anna- this one came down this week on either Dec. 1 or 2.
