I do the same.
The caps lock really helps when you need to press a command like:
Insert+Windows key+C to append text to the clip board.
Pressing the caps lock+Windows key+C is so much easier.

Great question about how to reach the keys...
I'll tell you the two ways I do it.

1. I have a desktop keyboard. The first way is to move my right hand to the
NumPad and press and hold the Zero/Insert Key with my thumb.
2. Then with my left thumb on the Windows Key, rather than the ALT Key, I
reach up with left index finger to find the F4 Key and press.

Hello list,

The dump command (JAWSKey+WindowsKey+F4) will restart JAWS automatically
while it creates a dump file to show what was happening at the time of the
loss of speech. It would be potentially very helpful to contact the Support
department and offer the Dump File with an explanation of what you were
doing when it the loss of speech occurred and how often you are seeing this.

These issues are difficult to track down as they happen randomly and most
certainly have something to do with JAWS interacting with UIA from Windows.
We are making progress on this every day and appreciate your continued

Smile, yes that is tricky with small hands. If you set the keyboartd to
laptop layout you will have assigned the caps lokc key as an altermate jaws
modifier. I recommend doing this anyway as it gives you a second jaws
modifier key, which makes certain keystrokes easier. If you need the caps
lock, you can always double tap the caps lock key to turn on caps lock
temporarily. Just remember to toggle it off when you are finished with it.
You can then hold the windows and caps lock key with one hand, reach up with
your right hand and press f4.

The second option.
Since I always run JAWS with Laptop Layout (even when on a desktop
keyboard), I can press the CapsLock and WinKey with the left hand, and use
my right hand to locate and press the F4 Key.

HTH.

We are making progress on this every day and appreciate your continued
feedback and support in tracking these down.

I think this is the "JAWS dump" keystroke referred to in the original post.
I did not think this keystroke automatically restarted JAWS? I'd better give
it a try. Usually I just kill JAWS with task manager, or nowadays, process
explorer, since task manager got ridiculously slow and basically unusable
lately.

You can also go into the JAWS Settings Center and configure the insert key
to work as a sticky key. That way, it can be pressed by itself first and
then whatever other keys are in the command. I had mine set this way and
find it much easier. It works for both insert keys.

We are making progress on this every day and appreciate your continued
feedback and support in tracking these down.

I did not think this keystroke automatically restarted JAWS? I'd better give

Where is the dump file located? Can we send this file directly via email and

I'm not sure it's been mentioned in this thread, but when I experience
freezing for a few seconds, I press JAWS key+Windows key+F4. This command
almost always restarts JAWS within another few seconds. I believe it helps
to first alt-ab out of the application where the freeze occurred.

This week, I'm noticing jaws just randomly freezes on me. I could be reading

would just stop working.

I would do the jaws dump command and then try to bring it back with the
hotkey but it doesn't come back up, unless I reboot. Thoughts?

I think this is the "JAWS dump" keystroke referred to in the original post.
I did not think this keystroke automatically restarted JAWS? I'd better give it
a try. Usually I just kill JAWS with task manager, or nowadays, process
explorer, since task manager got ridiculously slow and basically unusable
lately.

I'm not sure it's been mentioned in this thread, but when I experience freezing
for a few seconds, I press JAWS key+Windows key+F4. This command almost always
restarts JAWS within another few seconds. I believe it helps to first alt-ab
out of the application where the freeze occurred.

Re: [JAWS-Users] jaws and freezing

2018-01-28 Thread JM Casey
JAWS freezing, or just being intolerably slow, has been something that's
been a thorn in my side for many years. I appreciate your optimism and
supportive words, but I also believe that we, as computer users, require the
same speed and flexibility as everyone else. It's an unpleasant experience
when you know something that should take only a matter of a few seconds
takes you five minutes to accomplish just because of your screen-reader. I
personally think that it's much more important to fix these problems than it
is to introduce new features.

That said, I'm relatively happy with JAWS 18 on my Windows 10 machine. At
least I can reload it quickly if it crashes. There's also NVDA, which is, in
some aspects (not all mind you), more robust. So, the situation is
tolerable, just.

I don't want to overwhelm this serious issue with inherently worthless
responses. However, technicians at VFO have told me that the issue is
"under the hood" so to speak. Apparently, the newer versions of Jaws have
been redesigned in such a way that their headroom can be inundated by
software which requires more than normal functionality. In other words, the
more complex the software, the higher degree of probability that Jaws might
freeze or even crash under certain conditions. On the other hand, I have
noticed that with jaws 18, the program will often recover itself without any
prompting. The freezing is annoying but if we can be reassured that Jaws
will recover, it might be something we'll just have to put up with until the
designers find a way to deal with it. Personally, I think that Jaws had
made some amazing progress recently. I have no reason to think that the
designers won't continue to make it a better program.

I would do the jaws dump command and then try to bring it back with the
hotkey but it doesn't come back up, unless I reboot. Thoughts?

Re: [JAWS-Users] jaws and freezing

2018-01-28 Thread David Ferrin
I must report that I am not experiencing this freezing problem at all here.
In fact 2018 is quite stable on the systems I have it installed and use
every day as a matter of fact. Naturally all systems do not act the same for
various reasons.

Re: [JAWS-Users] jaws and freezing

2018-01-27 Thread Michelle Clark
I am using Windows 10 and JAWS 18 and notice it as well for a while. I
thought it was my computer. However, the interesting thing is we were told
at some point if the computer freezes, JAWS will restart. Not sure which one
it is.

However, it is irritating. Should not be occurring with a HP laptop with 8G.

Re: [JAWS-Users] jaws and freezing

2018-01-27 Thread Cristóbal
I'm going to have to pay more attention to this now. The only time I
absolutely know when Jaws freezes on me is when running a spell check in
Outlook before sending a message. It'll sometimes hang for a bit or outright
crash. I do get the odd Jaws freezing/hanging, but it's so random otherwise
that outside of the spellcheck thing, I can't really pinpoint a specific
behavior or sequence to it. I can usually tell when it crashes because my
Brailliant display will then just show the standard "Humanware Brailliant BI
40" message until Jaws comes back. This too is how I can tell in general
when Jaws has dumped on me since sometimes it can also be a pop up on the
screen or some other program that's frozen and gotte in the way of Jaws's
ability to speak. My sighted wife's bailed me out a few times by reaching
over and grabbing the mouse and closing whatever might be on the screen. And
like magic, Jaws comes back on its own.
There was an issue earlier this morning with Malwarebytes and some webcheck
update that was pushed out causing some weird ram spike and making
everything slow, crashy and buggy. It was locking up Jaws, NVDA and
Narrator. No matter what I tried, I would lose speech and I would have to
restart my desktop and laptop.
The only way I found out that it was Malwarebytes was by jumping online
between pc reboots and browsing through Twitter with my iPhone. There I saw
a tweet by them acknowledging that an app update was causing problems for
folks. They put out a fix about an hour later and both machines for me at
least are working as they should. It was a pretty stressful morning for
sure.

Subject: [JAWS-Users] jaws and freezing

Hello:

This week, I'm noticing jaws just randomly freezes on me. I could be reading
an email, surfing the web, writing in word, yelling at the dog, and poof it
would just stop working.

I would do the jaws dump command and then try to bring it back with the
hotkey but it doesn't come back up, unless I reboot. Thoughts?

Re: [JAWS-Users] jaws and freezing

2018-01-27 Thread Tammy
I had that problem on my Windows 8 laptop with Jaws 17. Naturally, FS told me
it was my computer so they did updates. I bought a new windows 10 laptop
running Jaws 18 and I have recently started having the same problem. If
somebody figures it out, I hope it is shared. This is frustrating!
Take care!

I am running JAWS 2018 on a Windows 10 Pro machine and experiencing the same
thing regarding freezing. In fact it happened to me the other day when I was
taking a Freedom Scientific certification exam Thinking there is a little
bit of irony there. If you leave the machine alone speech usually returns in
3 or 4 minutes.

Yeah, same here.
At first I thought it was Avast, when I accidentally installed it with
CCleaner, but after removing Avast, it still occurred.
But, others are experiencing the same symtoms, so Avast is not the issue.

I have also had the problem of jaws 14 freezing with outlook 2010. It appears
that I have no problems with regular email messages or jaws messages, but when
I have messages that involve links and I try to get into a link, it either will
freeze or give me blanks. I was advised to uninstall and reinstall jaws 14 to

waiting for a new email with links to come in to see what happens.

[JAWS-Users] Jaws 14 freezing with outlook 2010

2012-10-26 Thread jim
Hi Eric:

I have been helping Diane with trying to fix her outlook problem.

We spent about four hours on the phone with tech support yesterday.

They were very helpful and patient with us.

However, she has the same problems going on, Jaws freezing up and still losing
speech, or after waiting for a minute or two we get blank messages instead.

the last suggestion from the Jaws tech. was to uninstall Jaws 14 and all shared
conponents which I helped her do after we finished the call with the Jaws tech.
person.

I helped her reinstall Jaws 14 using narator, after finishing this long process
of talking on the phone with tech. support and walking her through all these
suggestions we are still having the same problems with Jaws 14 and outlook on
her computer.

How do I go about having her check for this update for Outlook 2010?

Any help would be appreciated, thank you in advance...

You should be able to get outlook service pack 1 in windows update. Keep in
mind that it won't say outlook, it will be ms office service pack 1.

Subject: [JAWS-Users] Jaws 14 freezing with outlook 2010

Hi Eric:

I have been helping Diane with trying to fix her outlook problem.

We spent about four hours on the phone with tech support yesterday.

They were very helpful and patient with us.

However, she has the same problems going on, Jaws freezing up and still
losing speech, or after waiting for a minute or two we get blank messages
instead.

the last suggestion from the Jaws tech. was to uninstall Jaws 14 and all
shared conponents which I helped her do after we finished the call with the
Jaws tech. person.

I helped her reinstall Jaws 14 using narator, after finishing this long
process of talking on the phone with tech. support and walking her through
all these suggestions we are still having the same problems with Jaws 14 and
outlook on her computer.

How do I go about having her check for this update for Outlook 2010?

Any help would be appreciated, thank you in advance...

All,

We have also determined that some users have not updated their Outlook 2010
and this has caused some issues. Please update to Outlook 2010 SP1 if you
have not already.

Regards,
Eric Damery

All,
This is really bran new outlook support that FS worked on. Any problems you
may have, I advise everyone to contact support and report the issues you are
having. As I understand it, they are working on an update that will be
released in November now.

I have also had the problem of jaws 14 freezing with outlook 2010. It
appears that I have no problems with regular email messages or jaws
messages, but when I have messages that involve links and I try to get into
a link, it either will freeze or give me blanks. I was advised to uninstall
and reinstall jaws 14 to see what happens. I had an old email that still
gave me trouble. So I am waiting for a new email with links to come in to
see what happens.

Hello;
Firstly;
If I recall correctly;
Office service pack 1 was released 2011 in june.
To find out whether you have the service pack installed,

1, control panel;

2, programs and features;

3, now tab and enter on,
View installed updates link,

4, now press the letter m=
Microsoft office service pack 1
