Re: [JAWS-Users] reading empty PDF document with JAWS 2018
What version of JAWS? You need to have the document open in Adobe, then remember that the convenient OCR keystrokes are: Insert+Spacebar Release to hear a click sound Press the letter O release Press the letter D release You should hear a response that it is working I recall that this was available in JAWS 17 or later. you have to wait. like a 200 page pdf file can take over 1 minute to process. and jaws will make a tone while you are waiting until it has finished. -Original Message- From: Vicki W. Re: [JAWS-Users] reading empty PDF document with JAWS 2018
easy. open note pad then go to your files. but don't open them. open a context menu on them and use the ocr option and wait a few seconds for it to process the text. do not press the escape key or it will close. then you can view the text of the pdf file. the acuracy of the text depends on how much video errors there are in the scanned image. -Original Message- From: Vicki W. Hi Vicki, After opening the "empty" pdf, hit JAWSKey+spacebar followed by "od" (without the quotes). This invokes the OCR document scan. Between open book, and the jaws feature, insert plus space bar, o, then d, I can read most pdfs I want to read. I use adobe dc, and sometimes, it just converts it on its own without me having to use openbook, or the ocr convert in JAWS. Re: [JAWS-Users] Reading a PDF
It a little easier to use it and save things to a pc without having to go around in a circle to do so. It's got all the features you need in one spot. There are a lot of features to it. You can read files in a variety of ways. Take a look at the freedom scientific seminar Also, you can read pdfs with the freedom import printer, a very valuable way of readin.g You can take a file you've read with openbook, and convert it over to work. You can do a variety of things with it. Re: [JAWS-Users] reading empty PDF documents in JAWS 13
If it's possible, it's better to open the pdf than print it. V12 and 13 of Kurzweil1000 can open the pdf and then start image recognition in it. (This is a more accurate process than printing it.) So use that or your off-the-shelf OCR program (if you have one) [with JAWS], if it can open pdf's. - Original Message - From: inthaneelf inthane...@roadrunner.com To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Sent: Tuesday, June 26, 2012 7:56 AM Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] reading empty PDF documents in JAWS 13 yes but if the file is locked/secured and/or accessibility is turned off as well, then it can't scan it, don't know where folks got that notion, unless K9 did something to circumvent pdf security? if its secured its not scanable in K8 inthane - Original Message - From: Tara tarakelly...@gmail.com To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Sent: Friday, June 22, 2012 11:29 AM Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] reading empty PDF documents in JAWS 13 This is what I was doing, but it didn't work. You will hear it say OCR finished and the jaws curser will become active and if you then arrow down it will read the ocr for the text in that window. You will have to then page down and go through the process again for each new page. I hope this answers your question about JFW's OCR. It is a little bit limited but it works great in a pinch. I actually recommend sending the document to conv...@robobraille.org. You'll get it back in a few minutes as a textfile attachment. You can put codes in the subject line to specify a different return file format. Alternatively, you can upload the file to www.robobraille.org and specify the desired file format in the form. Thanks for what would be a great idea, but it is from my attorney and is private, so I don't want to send it to a service or for anyone to open for me. I do have Open Book 9, but my efforts to open it with OB haven't worked. I don't know if I have messed up my file associations or something, but I get the following error message: File C:\Program Files (x86)\Freedom Scientific\OpenBook\9.0\Users\default\Library\(the name of the file).pdf does not exist. The file is definitely in documents under libraries. I launch OB. Press alt-F/ Press enter on open. Paste in the name of the file . Tab over to the combo box for look in. Get to libraries and press enter on open. I can't get it to go below libraries. I've spent hours on this and am getting very frustrated. Re: [JAWS-Users] Reading Whole .PDF Document and Convenient OCRFeature
Margaret, Launch Open book. Press Control+o to open. tab to file type and type adobe. Or just arrow down to adobe/PDF. Shift tab back to folder name. I usually have my docs under my documents but Openbook has its own path. So when on folder name keep hitting the backspace key until you get to the folder where your PDF file is located. You might just want to put your file on desktop and keep pressing the backspace until you get to desktop. When you see your file name in list view press enter and OpenBook should begin processing. Hopefully it is readable. Re: [JAWS-Users] Reading a pdf document with more than 1 column
another option would be to experiment with the reading settings that JAWS uses in PDF files that are usually displayed when a PDF file is opened unless you have chosen to not have these shown. Sometimes changing these settings will impact the method of how JAWS reads this information. I would suspect that this applies to other screen readers although I have never used them. When reading it with Jaws 12.0.1158 in Acrobat Reader 9.4.4 I cannot figure out how to read each column separately. Right now Jaws reads continuously through each line, treating the two columns as one line of text when the two columns appear together. How can I configure Jaws to read each column separately when they appear on the page next to each other. Thanks for any help in this matter. Re: [JAWS-Users] Reading a pdf document with more than 1 column
What I would like to do is read the document one column at a time like two columns in a magazine or newspaper. Can Jaws do that for me? Greg For answers to frequently asked questions about this list visit: http://www.jaws-users.com/help/
Re: [JAWS-Users] Reading a pdf document with more than 1 column
Have you tried changing the document reading mode to see what difference that makes? I often change it from the let Adobe figure it out option to 'left to right, top to bottom' and get a better result. Good luck! Re: [JAWS-Users] Reading a pdf document with more than 1 column
Greg: If I understand, you basically want one column of text, is that right? So, one way you might get this to work would be to use a scanning program like Openbook to do OCR on your .pdf document. You would: open your .pdf document. Do a control-P to print select your scanner's import printer and hit enter. If your scanning program is set to recognize columns, you should get what you're looking for. William S.
