Hi Vicki,

After opening the "empty" pdf, hit JAWSKey+spacebar followed by "od"
(without the quotes).
This invokes the OCR document scan. It will take a bit of time for the
scan, depending on the size of your document.
The result is then displayed in the virtual viewer.
If you wanted to, once the scan is complete, you could select all of the
text, copy it to the clipboard and paste it into a text file.

they said jaws 2018.
no, note pad is not needed to read the text.
i just for got to delete the note pad reference when i was editing what i was
going to say. grin
but you do need to use note pad if you want to save the ocr text, by useing
copy and paste to copy the text into note pad.

That seems a bit vague, even to me. Do you bring up the file list in the
"Open" dialog of Notepad? If so, you also need to change the file type to
"all files" to see any PDF document.

I'm thinking that your idea is based on JAWS 2018 with the capability to
recognize a PDF file directly from a file list in Windows Explorer, and not
opening it. If so, then Notepad has nothing to do with the process -- the
virtual viewer will come up without having Notepad open.

I'm not sure the requester has said what version of JAWS is being used.

Also the context menu that pops up does not say "OCR" it instead says
"Recognize with JAWS".

easy.
open note pad then go to your files. but don't open them.
open a context menu on them and use the ocr option and wait a few seconds
for
it to process the text.
do not press the escape key or it will close. then you can view the text
of
the pdf file.
the acuracy of the text depends on how much video errors there are in the
scanned image.

What version of JAWS? You need to have the document open in Adobe, then
remember that the convenient OCR keystrokes are:

Insert+Spacebar
Release to hear a click sound
Press the letter O
release
Press the letter D
release
You should hear a response that it is working

I recall that this was available in JAWS 17 or later.

will do the same thing with PDFs.
That said Judy, there are a number of good free programs out there that will
take a PDF and convert it to text, even some web sites where you send them
your PDF and they will return it in minutes as a text file.

Judy, to add a little more detail. I never bought OpenBook because I believe
there are so many other ways of accomplishing what it does. Essentially,
it's an OCR program with scanner that was designed with JAWS in mind.
However, as you may have seen with the recent KNFB Reader thread, there are
now many other, much more affordable ways to convert print to digital text.

But since I don't own it, I hope Openbook users will chime in with any
advantages it may have over other options.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Reading a PDF

2017-03-15 Thread Tammy
I have had Openbook for 20 years. At one time, it was the only thing I knew
about. The KNFB reader is really nice and so much more portable. I never
remember those web sites that convert files but they are good too. I know
Jaws has a feature to convert pdf files too. I don't have a lot of luck
with that one. I probably need more practice. It is so nice to have an
assortment of options.

It a little easier to use it and save things to a pc without having to go
around in a circle to do so. It's got all the features you need in one
spot.
There are a lot of features to it. You can read files in a variety of ways.
Take a look at the freedom scientific seminar
Also, you can read pdfs with the freedom import printer, a very valuable way
of readin.g You can take a file you've read with openbook, and convert it
over to work.
You can do a variety of things with it.

Judy, to add a little more detail. I never bought OpenBook because I believe
there are so many other ways of accomplishing what it does. Essentially, it's
an OCR program with scanner that was designed with JAWS in mind. However, as
you may have seen with the recent KNFB Reader thread, there are now many other,
much more affordable ways to convert print to digital text.

But since I don't own it, I hope Openbook users will chime in with any
advantages it may have over other options.

If you have Open Book or Kurzweil you can send the file to the printer
then

select the appropriate one and the image file is converted. Jaws OCR is
best used just to get a look at what it is so you know if you want to
proceed further with a conversion process. It is not meant to read long
documents. For that you really need some kind of scanning program that
will

convert image files to text.

Hi,

I am assuming that the PDF document is an image. If you have a scanner,
you

can print the document and then scan it to have Jaws be able to read the
document as a text file.

Re: [JAWS-Users] reading empty PDF documents in JAWS 13

2012-06-26 Thread Flor Lynch
If it's possible, it's better to open the pdf than print it. V12 and 13
of Kurzweil1000 can open the pdf and then start image recognition in it.
(This is a more accurate process than printing it.) So use that or your
off-the-shelf OCR program (if you have one) [with JAWS], if it can open
pdf's.

yes but if the file is locked/secured and/or accessibility is turned

notion, unless K9 did something to circumvent pdf security? if its
secured its not scanable in K8

If you have Open Book or Kurzweil you can send the file to the
printer then
select the appropriate one and the image file is converted. Jaws OCR
is

best used just to get a look at what it is so you know if you want to
proceed further with a conversion process. It is not meant to read
long
documents. For that you really need some kind of scanning program
that will

convert image files to text.

Hello Tara,

If you press incert and space bar you will hear a click then press the
letter o, followed by the letter w. You will hear it say OCR finished and
the jaws curser will become active and if you then arrow down it will read
the ocr for the text in that window. You will have to then page down and go
through the process again for each new page. I hope this answers your

According to the JFW help file on OCR, the Control 1 will make the pdf

So I opened up Open Book, and it did read it.
So if you have any scanner software see if it will do PDF.

the first lines. Could some kind person please tell me how I can

I actually recommend sending the document to conv...@robobraille.org.
You'll get it back in a few minutes as a textfile attachment. You can put
codes in the subject line to specify a different return file format.
Alternatively, you can upload the file to www.robobraille.org and specify
the desired file format in the form.

Try just using the Openbook virtual printer.

Try opening the document in Adobe Reader, even though there is no text, then

Re: [JAWS-Users] Reading Whole .PDF Document and Convenient OCRFeature

2012-02-06 Thread Ann Marie Medlar

Margaret,
Launch Open book. Press Control+o to open.
tab to file type and type adobe. Or just arrow down to adobe/PDF.
Shift tab back to folder name. I usually have my docs under my documents
but Openbook has its own path. So when on folder name keep hitting the
backspace key until you get to the folder where your PDF file is located.
You might just want to put your file on desktop and keep pressing the
backspace until you get to desktop.
When you see your file name in list view press enter and OpenBook should
begin processing. Hopefully it is readable.

Good luck.

2011-06-12 Thread ckrugman
another option would be to experiment with the reading settings that JAWS
uses in PDF files that are usually displayed when a PDF file is opened
unless you have chosen to not have these shown. Sometimes changing these
settings will impact the method of how JAWS reads this information. I would
suspect that this applies to other screen readers although I have never used
them.

right?

So, one way you might get this to work would be to use a scanning program
like Openbook to do OCR on your .pdf document. You would:
open your .pdf document.
Do a control-P to print
select your scanner's import printer and hit enter.
If your scanning program is set to recognize columns, you should get what

haven't gotten a handle on how to deal with PDFs.

Thank you for any help! Vicky

I am having trouble getting from page to page in a PDF document. I have
never had any problem before, but please tell me how to do it. It has
been

a while since I did this and I must be doing something wrong.

Thanks.
