Yes, there was a sentence in there where I should have written "VLC" to
clarify, since I was relating/comparing both programs. Sorry.

Yes, but we are talking about VLC player random function, not winamp.

I prefer randomising the playlist in winamp with alt-shift-r rather than
using shuffle mode. The reason is that when using shuffle it's impossible to
tell what song has just played after it's moved on to the next one.

I use Winamp for this too. There is a random button in the playlist editor.
I don't think there's a convenient shortcut for it by default. But yes, it's
there. When I took a brief look last time when I had version 2.2.6 or
something, I could not get jAWS to find it, however. I will try again with
3.01 and see what happens. The reason I didn't fuss about this at the time
(I like making random playlists too) is that I really only use VLC for
videos. Of course it's your choice, and it may make a difference to you that
VLC is still being updated. However, most new file formats are video, not
audio, formats. Another thing I value winamp over VLC for audio playback for
is the equalizer. VLC has one, but it's much less user friendly ... it's
very difficult to save your own settings. SO if you care about that, you
might want to consider this. However, for video playback, VLC simply can't
be beat. It's fast and extremely versatile. There's a lot of stuff under the
hood.

Some may remember I made several posts about how great this player was, but
that certain things, like the advanced preferences dialog, were difficult to
use with a screen-reader. I just want to report that I have installed the
last stable build, 3.01 I believe, and not only does the player seem at
least twice as fast to load on my Windows 10 64 bit machine, but the
preferences screen is reading properly with JAWS. The advanced preferences
now show as a tree view, and so far I no longer have to hit space on a
checkbox to even hear whether it is a checkbox or not. So, good news for
video users.

Re: [JAWS-Users] VLC Media Player 3.0

2018-03-02 Thread JM Casey
Hey jerry.

Isn't this something of an ongoing issue for you? Did you ever get your
external CD rom to be recognised for the other program (was there more than
one?) you were using?

You can find all disk options under "open disk" in the media menu. Looking
at it now, there is a series of radio buttons from which you can choose the
type of disk. This changes the playback options in the dialog box. There's
also a combo box that lets you choose a drive. I only have one CD drive, but
it should register any such drives plugged into your computer, external or
not.

The hotkey for the "open disk" dialog is ctrl-d. It's also accessible from
the media menu from the menu bar. If you have already seen that dialog and
looked at that combo box, and if it's only showing your internal drive --
then I guess your problem with the external and Windows is ongoing.

There's a lot of stuff under the
hood.

Hey folks.

2018-03-01 Thread JM Casey
Hey.

VLC is nothing like iTunes. It doesn't work in remotely the same way, I
think, although actually my knowledge of iTunes is quite sketchy. I've
always avoided it.

The way I do things, is that I have each artist in my music folder divided
into subfolders, which contain albums. I don't' use VLC for music, but I use
Winamp for that purpose and it essentially can work the same. I can add as
many folders to a playlist as I like, or just play a single folder, or a
single file -- all through file explorer in windows.

VLC doesn't have any knowledge of the files on your computer. It just plays
what you tell it to play. I don't know about exporting files from iTunes,
because I don't know what sort of files they are, if they're copy-protected,
or anything. I just got the impression that iTunes mucks about with your
file system, which I didn't like, so I stayed far away.

if the songs are not being stored in the cloud they should all be in your
users/account name/music/itunes folder. i don't know if they are copy
protected or not. so try copying a few songs to a flash drive and see if they
will play on another computer.

Hi Vicky,
I will tell you how to get started with VLC Media Player. I have used it for
some time, and love it. First of all, after it is installed, you should make
VLC your default player. If you are using win10, press Windows +I and press
enter on system and go down to default programs and press enter. tab to your
audio player and press the space bar and press the space bar on VLC after you
have tabbed to it. Do the same with your default video player. VLC will play
any audio or Video file you can imagine. Now, just press enter on a media file
in your collection, and it will open in VLC. Here are some key commands to get
started. Holding down the shift and tapping the right or left arrows, will fast
forward or rewind a small bit. If you hold down the CTRL and tap the right or
left arrow keys, it will fast forward or rewind by a bigger margin. Holding
down the CTRL and pressing the up or down arrow keys will increase or decrease

Yes you can do that.
My problem is that when I press the alt key the menus do not come up. Does any
one have an idea why this is and how to fix it?
Thanks

Can you select a folder for example and then tell VLC Player to play the
tracks in that folder at random as this is so easy to do in WINAMP.

started. Holding down the shift and tapping the right or left arrows, will fast
forward or rewind a small bit. If you hold down the CTRL and tap the right or

Re: [JAWS-Users] VLC media player?

2016-06-08 Thread David Moore

Hi Vicky,
I will tell you how to get started with VLC Media Player. I have used it for
some time, and love it. First of all, after it is installed, you should make
VLC your default player. If you are using win10, press Windows +I and press
enter on system and go down to default programs and press enter. tab to your
audio player and press the space bar and press the space bar on VLC after
you have tabbed to it. Do the same with your default video player. VLC will
play any audio or Video file you can imagine. Now, just press enter on a
media file in your collection, and it will open in VLC. Here are some key
commands to get started. Holding down the shift and tapping the right or
left arrows, will fast forward or rewind a small bit. If you hold down the
CTRL and tap the right or left arrow keys, it will fast forward or rewind by
a bigger margin. Holding down the CTRL and pressing the up or down arrow
keys will increase or decrease the volume. If you use JAWS, you will have to
press Insert+3 on the numbers row first to pass this key through to VLC.
Next, I strongly encourage you to go through the first three menu options
and keep track of all key commands you hear. You will be able to control the

Hi Paul,

I opened the DVD, opened the Video folder, & pressed enter on, VIDEO_TS.VOB
11/18/1999 12:04 PM VLC media file (.vob) 156 KB, & nothing happened.
I went into the VLC Playback menu & pressing enter on, Chapters brought up
some options with, Resume, being checked. Since I don't know what these
options do I stopped playing around with it. I did get WMP to play a couple
of chapters, but not the main movie chapter. Thank you very much for your
input.
Take care.

Another thing: Depending on the directory structure of the DVD, you
might need to go to the Play menu, down arrow to Chapter and manually
start the movie at the first chapter. Many DVDs are now laden with
features, accessible typically from a start menu that is often labeled
as Title 1. The DVD should move normally from chapter to chapter once
the first actual chapter in the movie has been started. BTW, this is
not the case for all DVDs, but I've often seen it when using VLC. HTH -

Hi Jim,

I have tried your suggestions, & nothing happens. The window is there
stating it's the DVD VLC..., but in the VLC Playback menu it says, program
unavailable, & in the Audio menu it says, audio track unavailable. I don't
get the File menu option, only the VLC menues when I press the Alt key. It
does the same thing on both my XP & Windows 7 computers. I've never tried
to play a DVD before so, I couldn't say if this something that just started
happening or, if this problem has been there all along. Thank you very much

Try reading the help, all kinds of keyboard short cuts.

2009-05-01 Thread Erin B. Edgar

Hi, Kerry,
I have not used it much, but it is loaded with hotkeys, although they
aren't generally visible. I think there is a list in the help files.
If you can't find them there, I have a list around here somewhere; it
contains many many hotkeys. I'm not sure where it is, however. If I
find it, I will send it along. If, in the meantime, you want to use it
to simply play a file, the space bar works well to play/pause.

Re: [JAWS-Users] VLC Media Player

2008-07-05 Thread Donald Marang
I use VLC Media Player. It works great! Dell installed it for me when I
could not play DVDs on my new laptop. I had to disable the CyberLink
startup item for the Dell provided Media Direct application, because it
enables Vista Sticky and Repeat Keys in JAWS. And for some reason, Windows
Media Player and Windows Media Center refuse to play a DVD, because it can
not verify that the video output is copy protected! I think this is a Dell
problem.

Back to the point, the default keystrokes for VLC Media Player are:
Play / Pause Space bar
Stop s
Full Screen F
Volume Up Control Up Arrow
Volume Down Control Down Arrow
 Mute M

But on my Dell laptop the volume controls do not seem to work, even if I try
to redefine them. The dialog box to redefine the interface is fairly slow
and I initially needed sighted assistance.
But you can eventually get the gist of it. You may have to tab through the
dialog box and Shift tab back through them to have JAWS tell you what the
combo box is defining. I think this dialog box scrolls and JAWS gets
confused.

 Hi, all,
I'm trying to use this player, and it looks excellent. However, I cannot
find a list of hot keys. I go into the preferences menu and try to pull
up the dialog that I think reassigns hot keys, but it looks very unwieldy
and clunky. If I use my JAWS cursor to navigate around in it, seems very
slow and complex. Any help would be appreciated.
 Thanks,
 Erin
