I have set up an excell spreadsheet that will print checks of the standard size. It is not a program that does the math and keeps a check register, but for simply printing checks, this works well. If you are interested I will email you the file. Contact me at tomvos...@gmail.com Tom For answers to frequently asked questions about this list visit: http://www.jaws-users.com/help/

I also use online banking extensively, but occasionally, I employ day laborers or very small contractors who might not even have a regular address. This file will be laid out to match the print positions of the four items mentioned above on the check. This is the hardest step trying to make sure that the print positions matched up correctly. I have wasted several checks doing this. If you have a sighted person to measure the check for you, you can lay it out using alt+F then U for page set up to set up the margin. You also have to use format, paragraph to manipulate the exact position so not have to print high above the line or below the line. Once the format file is created, then you have to do a mail merge. I have accounts at a few businesses around town and I like to pay them by cheque rather than charge card or debit card. they offer me account services and they send me a bill. I don't see any reason why they should have to pay the banks for offering me that convenience. I would like it if they would offer me a discount for their saving but I consider it part of the cost of convenience. I have been able to occasionally pay by cheque rather than credit card for the bank discount in some situations, particularly large purchases. The vendor can give me 4 or 5% discount and there is also some tax saving to me without costing the vendor anything, it is just money he doesn't pay the card people. Not all merchants will do that. I saved a couple of hundred bucks on a bed a few years ago, enough to hang new curtains and a spread with some change. Don't think either of my banks offer raised line cheques. Gerald - Original Message - From: Lennie lenni...@mchsi.com To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Sent: Wednesday, October 13, 2010 5:49 PM Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] Check writing Software Hi Bill, I am assuming that you already have checks? I have set up a system using word 2003 and it is rather complicated, but it works for me. I'll try to explain. First you must set up a word table with four columns: 1. the payee 2. the check amount (in numbers such as 100.00 no dollar sign) 3. the check amount written out as One Hundred and no/100 4. the memo or note field Once the table has been set up, then you must create a file which I call check format. Alt+t, E press enter and select Directory and follow the prompt to step through the process to merge the table with the format file. Once you have successfully done this, then you must do the process over again by recording the steps creating a macro with a short-cut key so that the merge can be done each time that you want to change an amount of a check or add a new payee. I know that this is complicated as hell and a certain friend will probably want to go to Dr. Phil after doing all of this. One more thing, my checks are the business size checks that my bank provided for me as a blind customer. It is called a sighted check. I don't know if other banks will charge you for these types of checks. If you are interested on what I mentioned above, write me off list and I will do my best to help especially since I wrote this email rather quickly and may have left out some important information. You can write a macro in Word to enable you to fill in cheques and then use the envelope slot in a standard printer to actually print them. My Son set it up for me and it announces the title of each field as you tab through them. Obviously you will need to have someone fairly computer literate and sighted to set this up but once its done its really very easy to use. Andy GOODTIMES ROADSHOW Chairman of... Re: [JAWS-Users] Check writing Software
Hi Bill, I am assuming that you already have checks? I have set up a system using word 2003 and it is rather complicated, but it works for me. I'll try to explain. First you must set up a word table with four columns: 1. the payee 2. the check amount (in numbers such as 100.00 no dollar sign) 3. the check amount written out as One Hundred and no/100 4. the memo or note field Once the table has been set up, then you must create a file which I call check format. Re: [JAWS-Users] Check writing Software
Wouldn't it be a lot easier to set up online bbill payment with your bank instead of going through the hassle of printing checks? I never write checks anymore since I set up online bill payment with my bank, JP Morgan Chase. . Plus, I save on the cost of postage and special checks. And I can do this without sighted help. Re: [JAWS-Users] Check writing software.
Actually, online bill pay is safer than paper checks because there is less chance of checks getting lost in the mail and falling into the wrong hands. Also, you can receive daily email alerts of your account balance so that you know instantly whether there is any suspicious activity. And no check register to keep track of. Re: [JAWS-Users] Check writing software.
So, those of you who do not use cheques, do you carry large amounts of cash? I will contract a local loader operator to remove snow for the winter in a couple of weeks, I expect it will be around $600. I paid him something like $225 two weeks ago to bring me a small load of sand and to remove a couple of tons of debris from my lawn. Now he doesn't travel with a charge card machine in his truck or run PayPal and I don't keep hundreds of dollars about although I probably could make a special trip to the bank in advance if I knew exactly how much it will cost. Re: [JAWS-Users] Check writing software.
Hi Dale, It's not my preference, but I do have raised line checks and can write a check if needed. I bought the kind of checks that have a carbon behind them so if a friend or someone writes a check for me I have a copy of it. I have been using online banking until recently when they changed the site and I just don't get it anymore. I am working with FS and the bank to make it work for me. I like the online banking because I have it set so that anytime any activity occurs on my account, I receive an email. Some banks try to charge more for the raised line checks, but the law says that they have to charge you the price of the most popular check they issue. Re: [JAWS-Users] Check writing software.
I too use the duplicate cheques but I don't write them. There aren't many businesses who take cheques any more of course but on-line banking which I also use does not cover every situation.
