yeah...you guys figure out how to integrate and work together I kinda favor the sender being in the mailbox too. [JBoss-dev] [Design of JBoss Portal] - Forums portlet
I am trying to learn how to build a basic basic helloworld portlet myself. Try to use the forums portlet as a template. Have some confusion here. Based on the user manual, the reason that forums portlet is sperated out from the core is that it is intended to be deployed seperately (without the cms stuff). I took a look of the content of the portal-forums.ear. It does not contain any libary jar files. There's even no javax.portlet.Portlet (portlet-api-lib.jar). My question is can portal-forums.ear be deployed without the portal core? Also, for my new HelloWorld portlet, what's the jar file I need to include? I think portlet-api-lib.jar is a must. Just want to confirm. Thanks. [JBoss-dev] [Design of JBoss Portal] - Re: Forums portlet
Let me chime in ;) I wrote my helloworld portlet that was derived from the forum portlet and wasn't simple enough to understand... The build was copied from the forum and modified a bit and it turned out to be another mess. But afterall, I managed to build mine and started to get a hang of what's going on. My comment is that the forum portlet is not something to refer to when someone does not intend to write a database-driven portlet. It's just too complicated while a simple portlet will suffice. yeh, documentation is definitely necessary. While I am stumbling and crawling on my learning curve which appears to be very steep, I am willing to share my 2 cents here. :) View the original post : http://www.jboss.org/index.html?module=bb&op=viewtopic&p=3868599#3868599 Reply to the post : http://www.jboss.org/index.html?module=bb&op=posting&mode=reply&p=3868599 --- SF email is sponsored by - The IT Product Guide Read honest & candid reviews on hundreds of IT Products from real users. Talk to myself again :) I am able to build and run a helloworld portlet by including portlet-api-lib.jar in the war file. Once I have more time, I'd like to write a simple tutorial to show others how to build a portlet on JBoss portal. It should be very helpful for new developers. Good job, guys. [JBoss-dev] [JBossCache] - Replicated map coherence
It's actually a Jgroups question, but it's also related to caching... We are trying to build an replicated map based on JGroups (like the DistributedHashtable). The main concern is coherence of the replicated map. For example, consider two threads on different nodes trying to update the same entry (say threads U1 and U2 try to set id=1 equal to "a" and "b" correspondingly). At the same time two getter threads G1 and G2 try to get (locally) id=1 on two different nodes. It's ok if both G1 and G2 get a or b, but not if they return different values. Does the JGroups NAKACK protocol guarantee that (the user guide only says that it guarantess that messages from the same source will be processed in their original order)? If not, then how about TOTAL? Does that protocol queue all messages and process them in a single-threaded manner? How would that impact performance? Out of curiosity... I've "test-driven" the WTP 1.0M3 release and it is preeey impressive... I've got it installed in addition to JBoss IDE just for the visual XML editing alone! Why not base JBoss IDE on WTP? [JBoss-dev] [JBossCache] - Re: Is JBossCache appropriate for this problem ?
Thanks for the reply Ben. Probably you didn't understand my question because I was a little long-winded and not altogether to-the-point. I'll try to state what I want to do more succinctly. * I want to maintain a unique (global) collection of objects (user activity records) for a clustered application. * I only want to have one and only one such collection of objects, no matter how many nodes I have in my cluster. * The collection of objects should be available to the application components (Servlets and EJBs) across all nodes of the cluster. * I will update an object in this collection whenever there is a user activity. * A crash of one or more nodes of the cluster should not hose the collection, i.e. it should still be intact and available to all other surviving nodes of the cluster. What I'm asking is whether or not I can cook up an MBean (or any other component) which uses JBossCache to store a collection of objects and which can be available to all nodes of a cluster and survive a failure of the node it was started on. If so then how would I deploy the MBean so that it behaves essentially as a Singleton, with both replication and failover, without resorting to an HASingleton approach (since that doesn't appear to provide replication or failover) ? I have tried this already using an MBean (I'm calling it UserActivityManager) which stores the objects in a HashMap, and which is deployed as an HASingleton. It is working well but still it's only a partial solution since HASingletons don't appear to support true failover, in that when the master node which provides the HASingleton goes down the HASingleton MBean is lost for good (no real replication or failover). With this approach I need to access the object collection via the MBean by way of an RMIAdaptor. You can see details of this in a posting I added a few months back: http://www.jboss.org/index.html?module=bb&op=viewtopic&t=55794. My feeling is that this is really a hack and that there must be a more elegant solution. I have been instructed by my manager to investigate using JBossCache instead, and from my preliminary efforts at getting it to work it looks as if this is not the right thing to be using for the job. The idea is that I can use JBossCache as sort of an in-memory cache where I can store my objects, and since JBossCache looks to have some replication abilities I assumed that it could be used to replicate and share a cache of objects across nodes of a cluster. It's not clear to me that this is true, and that maybe my idea of replication is not the same thing as the replication provided by JBossCache. As far as failover goes it doesn't appear to be provided by JBossCache either, and if not then it is definitely not the right service to be using for the solution I need. My impression is that instead of using JBossCache this would be a better solved by using Hibernate objects, since the objects I want to store could be kept in a central persistent database and accessible to all components of my application regardless of which node of a cluster they happen to be running on at the time of access. In this approach I wouldn't need to maintain the object collection in an MBean itself but instead the MBean would access the objects as Hibernate objects, as would the other components of the application. There would be no need to roll my own replication and failover capabilities (as I'm currently doing by using an HASingleton MBean) since this is provided by virtue of keeping the objects in a central database which is not going to lose the data if any one node of my clustered application fails. What I'm hoping for is some guidance from those of you reading this forum who are more experienced and knowledgeable on these topics, as I'm not enough of an expert to be able to say one way or another which approach is best. I don't want to waste my time again by using the wrong tool for the job. I've again been long-winded, but hopefully I've explained the problem more clearly. Thanks in advance for any suggestions or insight. --James View the original post : http://www.jboss.org/index.html?module=bb&op=viewtopic&p=3868523#3868523 Reply to the post : http://www.jboss.org/index.html?module=bb&op=posting&mode=reply&p=3868523 --- SF email is sponsored by - The IT Product Guide Read honest & candid reviews on hundreds of IT Products from real users. [JBoss-dev] [Design of JBoss Portal] - Re: Portal 2.0 build failure
Thanks. Deployed core and forums successfully. The user manual needs to update on two things: 1. jboss-remoting.jar needs to be copied from all/deploy/lib to default/deply/lib as well (besides jgroups.jar and jboss-cache.jar). 2. changes need to be made on portal-ds.xml if you copy it from core/resources/setup directory. Click through the portal for a while, great stuff. Do have some questions: 1. whether or not all the portlet inside jboss porta are using the same authentication/authorization schem? To be specific, whether or not the user portlet/role portlet are controlling the access to the forums portlet? 2. what's the difference between "/index.html?page=forums" and "/index.html?_id=page.default.forums"? The second one is a working link (from the menu portlet) and the first one is not working (from the main panel) - page is just simply refreshed. I thought everything should go through "?page=", what's "_id" about? 3. can not make forums portlet fully working, e.g. can not click on "new post" link. Is it still under development? thanks! [JBoss-dev] [JBoss JIRA] Commented: (JBAS-29) Added URL Service MBean
[ http://jira.jboss.com/jira/browse/JBAS-29?page=comments#action_12315869 ] Phil Cornelius commented on JBAS-29: your first point.. My patch only supports trivial URLs but properly addresses the fact that the URL Resource, as one of the 5 J2EE resources, is missing from JBAS. This patch will allow users to decouple their external file resources from their EAR in a portable and J2EE standard way.. At present the only way to do this in JBoss is to embed the URL into the jboss dd inside the EAR.. which is not consistent with 'service file method' of the other 4 resources. I shouldn't have to have a different EAR file for each different customer deployment..that is the whole point. And I strongly believe this is the right way to do it. your second point I am not saying that this shouldn't be generalized.. but in the meantime this patch addresses an inconsistency in jboss. It is a first step.. and a first code contribution from me, I can't see the harm in including it. > Added URL Service MBean > --- > > Key: JBAS-29 > URL: http://jira.jboss.com/jira/browse/JBAS-29 > Project: JBoss Application Server > Type: Patch > Components: Naming > Versions: JBossAS-4.0.1 Final, JBossAS-4.0.2 Final, JBossAS-4.0.2RC1 > Environment: patches against src of JBossAS-4.0.1RC1, JBossAS-4.0.1RC2 > Reporter: Phil Cornelius > Assignee: Scott M Stark > Attachments: URLResource_jboss-4.0.1RC2.patch, was_urlresource.png > > Original Estimate: 2 hours > Remaining: 2 hours > > > Further to RFE991650 > http://sourceforge.net/tracker/index.php?func=detail&aid=991650&group_id=22866&atid=376688 > Attached is a patch that adds the URLResource Service > needed to actually bind the URLResources into the jboss > jndi directory. > Until now the only way of adding a resource of type > java.net.URL was to explicity write it in to the jboss > deployment descriptors. > Scott wrote the jboss server code to bind the URL > resource references to a jboss jndi name.. [JBoss-dev] [Design of Mail Services] - What dev tools?
Hi, Please tell what dev tools do you use. And also what testing/debugging tools to develop/test JBossMail? (I don't mean the platform(e.g. Eclipse), but the tools/plug-ins etc.). Especially how to test/ensure if the protocols(/dns) work the way they should? Some special TCM monitors/loggers? Also, do you use only the RFCs to implement? I red them but don't understand a word :(. Are they somewhere described/explained? Or what's the procedure to get those protocols to really work? Thanks in advance, Ahmed. [JBoss-dev] [JBoss JIRA] Created: (JBCACHE-104) Mass Removal
Mass Removal Key: JBCACHE-104 URL: http://jira.jboss.com/jira/browse/JBCACHE-104 Project: JBoss Cache Type: Feature Request Reporter: fredatwork Assigned to: Bela Ban Hello, I would like to propose to enhance JBossCache API with a mass-removal function : Let's say I entered several objects in an AOP cache : cache.putObject("/root/1", object1); cache.putObject("/root/2", object2); .../... cache.putObject("/root/999", object999); I would like to be able to remove masseively all objects under the "/root" frq, with a single method call. The idea here is to be able to reset whole regions of the cache by removing all objects contained in this region. For instance, a servlet init method could use this new method to reset a cache dedicated to a particular enterprise application. Whiout this method, there is no way to reseta cache region. With current 1.2 version, you have to keep track of individual objects in order to remove them one after the other one. Note: Ben Wang proposed me to create this feature request so he can add it to the roadmpa. [JBoss-dev] [JBossCache] - Is JBossCache appropriate for this problem ?
I want to have an object in which I store user activity information, and I want this object to be replicated across all nodes of a cluster. When one node of the cluster fails I don't want to lose the data being stored in this object. Essentially it will act as a central and unique (global) repository for my application's user activity information. No matter which node's Servlets service the user's requests the user activity information record (containing login time, last error, etc., updated at each request) should be stored in the same object, which should survive a crash of one or more nodes of the cluster. In this way I will be able to see all user information from the same UserActivityManager object (I plan to view this data using MBean methods). I already have such a class coded and working as an HASingleton MBean, but it is a bit clunky and does not support failover whenever the master node of the cluster goes down. From what I've been able to find out it appears that I will never be able to get true failover capabilities using this Singleton-based approach, and need to come up with a better solution. I am hoping that JBossCache will be able to do the trick. I have created an MBean class, UserActivityManager, which stores the user activity records in a TreeCacheAop member object. This MBean is deployed in its own SAR file in the deploy directory. In this SAR I have the UserActivityManager MBean class and interface, as well as two deployment descriptors: jboss-service.xml, which describes the MBean itself (with just a code and name), and replSync-service.xml, which I use to configure the TreeCacheAop object (this is the replSync-service.xml from the example, unaltered). So far I have not been able to get the MBean to either replicate or failover as I'd like, and before I spend too much more time with it I wanted to ask here to make sure that I will be able to make this work as I want. If not then hopefully someone can suggest a better idea. If this is the right approach then how should I go about configuring the MBean and/or TreeCacheAop to get the behavior I'm looking for ? How do I make it so that only one of these MBeans is used by all nodes of a cluster ? If this is not the right way to go about this then what is a better option ? I have considered/suggested using Hibernate objects for this instead, but my manager is against the idea of using a database for this sort of temporary persistence. (It seems like a logical solution to me, but I'm somewhat of a rookie and hence have little decision making clout.) If anyone can comment on the above I will certainly appreciate the feedback. I am by no means an expert on this sort of thing and will gladly consider any reasonable advice. Also I can post my MBean code and deployment descriptors if this will help. Thanks in advance. --James View the original post : http://www.jboss.org/index.html?module=bb&op=viewtopic&p=3868429#3868429 Reply to the post : http://www.jboss.org/index.html?module=bb&op=posting&mode=reply&p=3868429 --- SF email is sponsored by - The IT Product Guide Read honest & candid reviews on hundreds of IT Products from real users. [JBoss-dev] [JBossCache] - Re: Beginning Question: TreeCache and Clustering Requiremen
Thanks for the reply. Currently, our JBoss applications don't use transactions with Hibernate against our database. Am I right in saying that I would still have to use dummy transactions with the TreeCache in order to get replication to work across the servers, albeit without JBoss clustering? [JBoss-dev] [JBossCache] - Re: Mass removal of objects in cache
There is no api to do that now. You don't want to do a force non-aop remove (e.g., remove(fqn, root)) since it doesn't remove the CacheInterceptor. You will need to do rmeoveObject individually. If you want, please go to jira.jboss.com, open a feature request for JBoss Cache, and assign it to me. I'll put it in the roadmap. -Ben View the original post : http://www.jboss.org/index.html?module=bb&op=viewtopic&p=3868494#3868494 Reply to the post : http://www.jboss.org/index.html?module=bb&op=posting&mode=reply&p=3868494 --- SF email is sponsored by - The IT Product Guide Read honest & candid reviews on hundreds of IT Products from real users. [JBoss-dev] [JBossCache] - Re: Is JBossCache appropriate for this problem ?
James, I am not sure if I understand your question fully. But here is what I think. 1. We have plan to support MBean clustering using JBossCache in the future. 2. Meanwhile, if you want to do it yourself, you can have MBean sit on top of the Cache. Then to notify the MBean of a cache update, you subscribe to TreeCacheListener event. -Ben View the original post : http://www.jboss.org/index.html?module=bb&op=viewtopic&p=3868495#3868495 Reply to the post : http://www.jboss.org/index.html?module=bb&op=posting&mode=reply&p=3868495 --- SF email is sponsored by - The IT Product Guide Read honest & candid reviews on hundreds of IT Products from real users. [JBoss-dev] [Design of JBoss Portal] - Re: Document Replication and JBoss CMS
the cms can be configured to do cache invalidation and use one single database providing the feature you want. for that you need to configure the slide repository such it uses a JDBC store and shared by all the servers. also you need to use the HA version of the CMS that uses cache invalidation to invalidate entries in the cluster avoiding stale entries when modification occurs. I have not yet tested it with JDBC repository yet, only with shared file system. So if you want to try it you need to go on the jakarta slide website and use the doc to configure the JDBC store. All the configuration occurs in portal-core.sar/portal-cms.sar/META-INF/jboss-service.xml View the original post : http://www.jboss.org/index.html?module=bb&op=viewtopic&p=3868489#3868489 Reply to the post : http://www.jboss.org/index.html?module=bb&op=posting&mode=reply&p=3868489 --- SF email is sponsored by - The IT Product Guide Read honest & candid reviews on hundreds of IT Products from real users. [JBoss-dev] [JBossCache] - Mass removal of objects in cache
Hello, I would liek to know if there is a way to remove objects from an AOP cache "massively". Let's say I entered several objects in an AOP cache : cache.putObject("/root/1", object1); | cache.putObject("/root/2", object2); | .../... | cache.putObject("/root/999", object999); | Now I would like to remove all objects under the "/root" frq in a single call, like I want to reinitialize my cache. Any idea how should I do this ? [JBoss-dev] [Design of JBoss Portal] - JBoss Portal login
Hello, I am still wondering about the login in JBoss Portal... I mean, when I enter username and password on the UserPortlet, I do not really understand what happens, when I follow the code... If I am not already logged in, the UserPortlet presents that login.jsp-page. When I click on the Login-Button of that form, the action that will be performed is "renderrequest.getContextPath()"/login Where is that variable renderrequest initialized??? Not in those classes that are extended I suppose. How is my Request-Object for the Login built, so that I can probably build a dummy, for doing the login programmatically. Or is there a more simple solution to log a user in programmatically and get a positive or negative result??? Can anybody help me??? Thanks and regards OLLI View the original post : http://www.jboss.org/index.html?module=bb&op=viewtopic&p=3868359#3868359 Reply to the post : http://www.jboss.org/index.html?module=bb&op=posting&mode=reply&p=3868359 --- SF email is sponsored by - The IT Product Guide Read honest & candid reviews on hundreds of IT Products from real users. I was hoping that there was a way around, eg. by setting a property: resp.addProperty("portlet.expiration-cache","0"); In our applications we have to solve this use case: - User Lisa logs on to the portal and access several "protected" pages. - After a while she logs out and leave for lunch. - "Hacker" Bob takes physical control over her computer, and use the back button in the browser. If client caching not are turned off, he will be able to see localy cached pages in the browser, as long is he not posts or refresh's pages. Since majorty of browsers support no-cache directive, this has been enough to solve this problem. In our (and other) "secure" portal applications this problem has to be solved.
