Firstly, please do not cross post.

I deleted the exact same post you posted on the design forum.

Secondly, 1.2.0 version is fairly old now, if you are installing from new why
aren't you using 1.4.0?

The error you are getting is probably because you didn't follow the
installation instructions with respect to installing JBoss Remoting as
specified in the user guide.

IIRC it works for s:selectItems but not for s:convertEntity (it should work for
a converter which directly loads entitys based on ids from the page). I used
to have some caching support inside s:selectItems but removed it as I found it
only marginally useful. If you can come up with a good implementation, I would
be very willing to add it to Seam.

s:cache is, really, best suited for output only.

Damian, I see what you are saying, however there are situations where you might
want the it initialized (e.g. the value is provided by a factory) - so, yes, it
can provide a value if it doesn't exist yet. And the current behaviour is
consistent with the rest of Seam (when you reference a value using EL it's
create=true and not just a lookup).

I'm not sure of the best solution, but will think about it some more.

[jboss-user] [JBoss Portal] - Re: Feedback wanted. Would you choose JB Portal again?

2007-10-27 Thread wheezer
Chris,

 I complete respect what you're saying about the far more important design,
stability and usability of the portal, independent of the portlets. Let me
clarify my post and perspective a bit. I suppose my post was geared more
toward a view of the portal as a ready-to-run production environment for a
large (social) web site. As more of a portal user than a core developer, I am
very interested in the existing applications that a good portlet catalog could
provide (from any author or vendor).

In most reviews and remarks about many portals, and the promotional materials
of some of the portal sites themselves, the issue of off-the-shelf portlet
quantity and quality receives far more than a trivial mention. Like us, not
everyone choosing an enterprise portal is a large enterprise, able to just
crank out the code for a custom portlet to meet their needs. More often, they
want to modify something that comes close to their requirements, and go from
there.

The jsr168 approach provides a huge step up from the wild, wild, west that is
the open source portal world outside the JavaEE sphere. But the advantage of
some of those products is a wide array of third party plug ins that can jump
start many kinds of projects. I don't think it's a stretch to wonder if such a
community of portlets could be fostered in the JavaEE world too.

Liferay gets a lot of attention, mainly because of these available portlets,
and it's what attracted us to it. From just a few weeks of experience in their
forums, I can comfortably claim that this is what has motivated hundreds of
other users, as well. My sense, however, is that JBoss Portal is a better
architecture for our longer term goals, so I am eager to know much more about
it. Presumably, the portlets we develop there will be reasonably portable.

if you can use hibernate and toplink together, you can use jbpm 'with' toplink.
If you mean replacing hibernate completely, I suspect that that is possible but
requires it to be done complete by you.

[jboss-user] [JBoss Seam] - Re: Question - Can't save outjected DataModelSelection until

2007-10-27 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Remember @DataModelSelection injects a value. So, when you hit save, you get a
value injected both by @In and by @DataModelSelection which is injecting the
last data model selection made which as you are in a conversation is the one
from your list page. And Seam injects data model selections after @In
injections.

Putting @In and @DataModelSelection on the same variable isn't really sensible,
try splitting them out to separate variables.

Your points are valid. Then again, if you like Liferay's portlets (and
presuming that they are JSR 168 compliant), what is preventing you from using
these portlets in JBoss Portal?

Another aspect is, with JBoss Portal 2.6, we are starting to integrate with
non-JEE portals. You can for example very easily use Google widgets with a
Portal page with support for other (NetVibes comes to mind) probably coming
up...

Also, I often see this argument where people want to benefit from an open
source community of portlets to modify and use in their projects. How is it
though that these people rarely contribute their portlets back to the
community? Hint: useful, reusable portlets take time and attention to develop.
Most people write a custom solution and don't care about making it reusable.
From my perspective, and that's only mine, the return on investment on
open-source portlets is very low. First, it's not clear what portlets the
community wants. Second, we would probably spend a significant amount of time
developing them but they would probably not fit all users needs and the more
generic we make them (to try to make them easier to reuse), the more time we
would have to spend on them, also running the risk of making them more complex.
What do we have to gain from doing this? Increased visibility in the community
(which is great) and market share. But how much of this would translate to pa!
 ying customers? Would it be enough to justify the time we spent on them as
opposed to working on the core product (which IS making us money)? Hard
questions to answer...

A community doesn't build itself. It's a two way street... We provide an open
repository http://labs.jboss.com/portletswap/ for portlets... It is not as
great as it could be, and we are aware of that, but like most things, this
takes time and, from my point of view, with seemingly low interest from the
community, I'd currently rather spend that time on improving the Portal server.

[jboss-user] [Beginners Corner] - NetBeans IDE: Classpath not working for a JLabel icon image

2007-10-27 Thread victorj42
Hi all,

I get an error after using NetBeans to select an image file for a JLabel icon.

IDE code that works:
gallows.setIcon(new javax.swing.ImageIcon(K:\\Hangman\\images\\gallows.gif));

IDE code that fails when I run the project:
gallows.setIcon(new
javax.swing.ImageIcon(getClass().getResource(/gallows.gif)));

How I'm selecting the image location:
1) from the IDE click the [...] next to the icon property of my label then
choose classpath and click [select file].
2) I am able to navigate to the file correctly and it is displayed in the
preview window. I can even see it when I click on the test form button.

If I run my file I get an error:

at Keyboard.initComponents(Keyboard.java:175)

following errors removed by me

I hope someone can help me

Thanks

  | public ListBuildingsProd getBuildingsProdList() {
  | if (buildingsProdList == null)

  | return buildingsProdList;
  |

and when I load my planet

  | Planet planet = em.find(Planet.class, idPlanet);
  |
and add new object to collection

  | BuildingsProd b = new BuildingsProd();
  | planet.getBuildingsProdList().add(b);
  | em.merge(planet);
  |

new object should me inserted into db with my planet key and here is my
question.
This works fine on JBoss 4.0.5 but on tomcat with jboss embedded new object is
inserted into db but withoud planet FK key!!!
Why, and what is wrong here?

[jboss-user] [JBoss Seam] - Accessing a different conversation context

2007-10-27 Thread FabBoco
Hi,

I urgently need your help.

Suppose that I have two different conversation:

Conv1  Conv2

in which contexts there are two variables (let say v1) that can have different
values.

I am in a statefull bean method binded to Conv2 and I would read the v1
variable into Conv1.

I have tried the following code:

  |
  | Manager.instance().switchConversation(Conv1Id);
  |
  | System.out.println(Current conversation id
+Manager.instance().getCurrentConversationId());
  |
  | V1 v1 = Contexts.getConversationContext().get(v1);
  |
  | Manager.instance().switchConversation(Conv2Id);
  |

but v1 is always the value into Conv2 even thought the current conversation id
seams has been switched.

Where I am wrong ?

Please help me

Thank you very much indeed.

Regards

Fab.

[jboss-user] [JBoss Portal] - Re: Feedback wanted. Would you choose JB Portal again?

2007-10-27 Thread wheezer
All true.

I suppose though, in my head, I am thinking about why it is that so many open
source modules get built in the non-java, non-jsr168 communities. Naturally,
the universe of developers is much smaller here, and their professional demands
greater, but still, it seems there should be more interest. I mean hell, it's
not just open source portlets I am interested in. I'd happily pay reasonable
prices for useful portlets. I just don't see any around--at all. SyncEx
advertises all over the place, and I can't get a demo out of them. I'm not
expecting much, when I do.

If Jboss had a vibrant marketplace for portlets, I can't imagine independent
coders and developers not seeing a relatively easy path to some real revenue
without all that much work. I wouldn't even care how generic they were. I'd
bet there's a large market of enterprises and vendors who wouldn't either.
Sure, generic configurations are nice, but ANYTHING pre-built can be a huge
jump-start over building from scratch.

Incidentally, we do plan on probably running the Liferay portlets in Jboss.
Still just getting our bearings.

Thanks again for all the feedback. This has been very helpful. (Hope others
feel free to toss in some cents :)

[jboss-user] [JBoss Seam] - Re: getter method called hundereds of times

2007-10-27 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
JSF doesn't cache the value got from a backing bean - it just invokes the value
binding every time. Whether this is the ideal behaviour is up for discussion.
So don't put expensive logic in your getter!

[jboss-user] [EJB 3.0] - May be it's a bug about exception wrapping

2007-10-27 Thread FangTianying
hi,

env : JBoss 4.2.1GA  with Sun JDK1.5  WindowsXP EJB3.0

When SLSB A(transaction att:requried)  calls SLSB B(transaction att:not
supported) though B's local interface, and B throws a RuntimeException, then A
will recieve just this very RuntimeException rather than a EJBException.
I mean the EJB Container should wrap the rt. ex thrown by SLSB b to an
EJBException, and then deliver the EJBException to it's caller - SLSB A.

If this is a bug, please let me know, thanks. [EMAIL PROTECTED]

[jboss-user] [JBoss Portal] - Re: Feedback wanted. Would you choose JB Portal again?

2007-10-27 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
wheezer wrote :

open source modules get built in the non-java, non-jsr168 communities.
Naturally, the universe of developers is much smaller here, and their
professional demands greater, but still, it seems there should be more
interest. I mean hell, it's not just open source portlets I am interested in.
I'd happily pay reasonable prices for useful portlets. I just don't see any
around--at all. SyncEx advertises all over the place, and I can't get a demo
out of them. I'm not expecting much, when I do.
  |

Maybe it's because JEE developers spend their time in business integration of
complex enterprise services and it doesn't make much sense to provide the
portlets that were developed in that context to a larger audience? Maybe it's
because non-jsr168 portlets are usually not much more than a bunch of
javascript/html bundled together and which doesn't connect to enterprise
services, hence can be developed fairly quickly? I don't really know. I'm not a
portlet developer. :)

wheezer wrote : If Jboss had a vibrant marketplace for portlets, I can't
imagine independent coders and developers not seeing a relatively easy path to
some real revenue without all that much work. I wouldn't even care how generic
they were. I'd bet there's a large market of enterprises and vendors who
wouldn't either. Sure, generic configurations are nice, but ANYTHING pre-built
can be a huge jump-start over building from scratch.

Don't get me wrong. We would love to have a vibrant marketplace for portlets.
My guess as to why it's not there yet is that most portal deployments occur in
an enterprise context, with custom developed portlets that cannot be reused
outside of the context they were developed for.

What kind of portlets would you like to see?

wheezer wrote : Incidentally, we do plan on probably running the Liferay
portlets in Jboss. Still just getting our bearings.

  | Thanks again for all the feedback. This has been very helpful. (Hope others
feel free to toss in some cents :)

Glad I could help! Once again, though, this is my personal opinion so don't
construe it as JBoss' stance on open source portlets! ^_^

[jboss-user] [JBoss Seam] - Re: Seam 2.0.0 and hibernate search

2007-10-27 Thread slavosk
Hello Pete,
Thank you for answer.

I looked at the example. The only think I found was I don't call getDelegate().

  | FullTextEntityManager ftEm = (FullTextEntityManager) em.getDelegate();
  |

But when I do this I become an error:

  | java.lang.ClassCastException:
org.jboss.seam.persistence.FullTextHibernateSessionP
  | roxy
  |

Where could be the problem ? Versions of hibernate-search, hibernate
annotation, hibernate entityManager ?

Slavo

[jboss-user] [JBoss Seam] - Re: Performence of Seam 2.0 app

2007-10-27 Thread mgrouch
What could help to achieve better performance is variety of stress tests
which could be run as a part of the Seam build.

They would also have helped to understand how ongoing changes to Seam
impact the overall performance.

Each stress test should address a specific aspect of JSF application to be more
useful in troubleshooting and profiling.

Here are some ideas about use cases for stress testing

1. Rendering large table - measure response time (stress testing of EL, etc)
large number of columns and rows
2. Submitting big form (stress testing of validation and apply request values
phase)
3. Some repeatable evaluations of EL expression
4. Stress test case for injection/outjection
Backing bean with many In/Out annotations
5. Stress test case for annotation reading via Seam APIs
6. Stress testing of AJAX responses when using AJAX4JSF,
(by trying to rerender large area by Ajax)
7. Stress testing of EntityConverter
trying to render many dropdowns
