Hello Sundaram,

have you tried changing itemid type from int to Integer. Though, I am
not sure that is the problem.

Good luck,

I dont think using SUN's supplied jdk rpms, or using redhat's postgresql
rpm is the way to go.

1) USE BLACKDOWN jdk.
2) COMPILE and TUNE postgresql by your own.

Thats why you are using *NIX and opensource isnt it??
Cause you can fine tune any piece of it.

Although you can install packages from source rpms, if you really need
full configurability, and decent SW management then the ports collection
of FreeBSD is the answer.

I was going to use the org.jboss.naming.NonSerializableFactory to bind, so there
shouldn't be any issues there afaics.

Re: tangent: Re: [JBoss-user] Is it possible to use a Local Interface to an EJB from an MBean t hread in the same VM?

2002-05-23 Thread David Jencks

Sure, unless the call starts a new thread or goes through an interceptor
stack, as far as jboss is concerned its the same context/object/whatever.

There may be some problems with serialized datasources, at the moment you
might need to look up the ds from its name if you don't bind using an
object factory.

tangent: Re: [JBoss-user] Is it possible to use a Local Interface to an EJB from an MBean t hread in the same VM?

2002-05-23 Thread Dmitri Colebatch

Hi,

This is something I was going to ask anyway, and kinda ties in here.

If I develop a module, and bind it locally in JNDI, and this module requires database
access. Can I have something like what JD
drew below, and maintain tx context... eg:

  1. client calls EJB with required tx
  2. EJB calls my module
  3. my module accesses db through DataSource
  4. my module returns
  5. EJB call completes, and tx commits

make sense? I'm not introducing any new threads, so afaik it should be ok - but
wanted to check? COuld someone confirm for me
please?

cheers

Re: [JBoss-user] locking in initializing cluster

2002-05-23 Thread Dan Christopherson

It's trying to do multicast is the problem I believe. Normally that
isn't set up under windows (is my shady understanding - I ran into this
on my windows laptap, moved the cluster-service.xml file, and became happy).

Re: [JBoss-user] Is it possible to use a Local Interface to an EJB from an MBean t hread in the same VM?

2002-05-23 Thread David Jencks

If you start a new thread, you've lost your transaction context. The error
looks a bit as if a transaction is missing. How about trying with a
current jboss 3 version and telling us what the transaction settings on
your ejb's are?

[JBoss-user] Is it possible to use a Local Interface to an EJB from an MBean thread in the same VM?

2002-05-23 Thread JD Brennan
Title: Is it possible to use a Local Interface to an EJB from an MBean thread in the same VM?

I've got

client -> EJB -> MBean -> EJB
  1    2   3   4

this works fine when 2, 3 and 4 are all in the same
thread, but when I have the MBean create a new thread
I get NullPointerException (stack trace is below) trying
to call my EJB through a local interface.

I'm using an MBean so I can create a thread to have
things run asynchronously in JBoss.  Is this not
the right way to design this?  Should it work?

JBoss 3.0 Beta
Linux
JDK 1.4

Thanks!
JD

2002-05-23 Thread Emerson Cargnin - MSA

ANyone can help me with that?

I need to make use of JAAS using ldap as subjects
storages, but i need to use tomcat standalone as the web container.
What's the better way to accomplish this?

1- Using tomcat own ldap LoginModule to make the
authentication? and afterwards use the subject gotten by tomcat in ejb
invocations?
2- Using jboss ldap LoginModule to make the
authentication and autorization ?

if there's any other approaches to do this, i'd be
pleased to know.

And if someone has any working example of any of
this or other approaches, please send me a link to it : )

Thanks in advance

Umm, yah, that's why it took until NT4 for them to fix that neat little
LanManager hash issue - where the password hash sent over the LAN was
cleartext equivalent.

I wonder if Microsoft's developers really believe that it's that hard to
reverse engineer weak algorythms. Apparently 'more secure' is equivalent
to "I can't tell if there are any backdoors because I don't have the
source." Maybe, "It must be more secure: I can't verify that it's
mathematically correct!"

The same principal is why science done by hermits in mountain hideaways
has been so much more influential to modern technology than science done
openly in an environment where peer review and reproduction of
experimental results is critical to acceptance.

pfah! First they take bad engineering ("Windows won't run without
Internet Explorer") and use it as an excuse for monopolistic practices,
and then they take bad security practices ("If we tell them how it
works, they'll break it") and try to make it a virtue!

Hrm... Here's the loaded question for Microsoft's talking heads: "If
open source security is so bad, why did you use kerberos under Windows
2000?"

OK, back to work.

They are so cute when they try to convince the world their platforms are
more secure

I thought I'd share my favorites:

"I've never seen a systematic study that showed open source to be more
secure," said Dorothy Denning, a professor of computer science at Georgetown
University who specializes in information warfare.
--- Is there a systematic study that says they were less secure??? What a
bozo statement.

"Microsoft's push is a new front in a long-running company assault on the
open-source movement, which company officials have called "a cancer" and
un-American."
un-American? In the sense that "American" means anything MS profits from, I
guess.
a Cancer? No wonder I feel dirty. I liken those f&%^#ing macro viruses more
to a cancer than anything else.

"Microsoft also said open-source software is inherently less secure because
the code is available for the world to examine for flaws, making it possible
for hackers or criminals to exploit them. Proprietary software, the company
argued, is more secure because of its closed nature."

Hmm. If they say it, it must be true. Just more FUD-rhetoric. Nevermind
that there are (I would argue) FAR more well-meaning folks testing OSS
software than ill-meaning ones.

Hi Geeks

I funny to see that the more M$ is bitching about open-source the more
people notice open-source and at starting to evaluate it.
Most people, I think, realized that M$ with its history of buggy and un-
secure software is not reliable or at least giving the impression of the
need for a backup if M$ application fails.

M$ started a trend (killing competitors with free software) which is going
to hurt, maybe kill themself because open-source is not only free but
also increase trust by providing the code.

So, hopefully, M$ is going on with this smear campain and we can take
advantage out of it.

Have fun - Andy

RE: [JBoss-user] Access InitialContext of Tomcat 4.0.2

2002-05-23 Thread Jon Swinth

Dirk,

If you are trying to access the Tomcat JNDI from an external program then you
are most likely out of luck since it doesn't look as if Tomcat is exposing it
via a port like JBoss does.

"Tomcat 4 provides a JNDI InitialContext implementation instance to web
applications running under it"

Key words being "under it". You can read for yourself at:

http://jakarta.apache.org/tomcat/tomcat-4.0-doc/jndi-resources-howto.html

If you want to access the JNDI from _within_ a Servlet then simply use:

Context jndiContext = new InitialContext() ;

If we have all misunderstood you and you are trying to access the JBoss JNDI
from a standalone Tomcat then use this in your Servlet code:

Properties props = new Properties();
props.setProperty(Context.INITIAL_CONTEXT_FACTORY,"org.jnp.interfaces.NamingContextFactory");
props.setProperty(Context.URL_PKG_PREFIXES,"org.jnp.interfaces");
props.setProperty(Context.PROVIDER_URL,"localhost:1099");
InitialContext jndiContext = new InitialContext(props);

Obviously change localhost if JBoss is running on a different machine. You
would also need to add a link to (linux) or copy the following files from
$JBOSS_DIST/client to $CATALINA_HOME/lib :

jboss-client.jar
jboss-common-client.jar
jboss-j2ee.jar
jbosssx-client.jar
jnet.jar
jnp-client.jar
log4j.jar

Good luck.

We're using SuSE linux now but before, when we had red-hat, I remember
it was extermely important to install the jvm via rpm from sun. You can
download a tar.gz jvm or you can get the red-hat rpm. If we used the
tar.gz version it failed miserably all the time. When we installed
their rpm things worked.

Hope this helps.

ps. SuSE is way better than RedHat :-)

[JBoss-user] Success with JBoss

2002-05-23 Thread Jonathan Gibbons

Hi,

very quick note to day I've had JBoss with Oracle and MySQL running on a win2K server
for the last 2 months now. And its ace. Using version 2.4.4 and have zero problems.
Hurrah!

Its a small site - about 300 registered users logging on a day. But I am still very
pleased with JBoss.

from the embedded catalina ?

there are no tomcat InitialContext, since jboss
propose it's own InitialContext...
to contact EJB and MBeans resources, just
include the jboss\client\jnp-client.jar, the jndi.properties
and alike as explained in jboss doc

http://www.jboss.org/online-manual/HTML/ch01s15.html

if you want to use a separate Tomcat, in order to
contact Jboss resources you need to add the
same jnp-client.jar, jndi.properties to the server classpath
(I think you can simply put it in the common/lib )

RE: [JBoss-user] JBoss 2.4.4 NameAlreadyBoundException

2002-05-23 Thread Graham French

Hi,

I eventually found the problem, the entity bean was trying to initialise the
datasource from the JNDI in the constructor of the bean, when, according to
the EJB spec, the constrcutor when it is called by the container does not
yet have access to the JNDI environment for that bean. Moving the call to
this method to outside the constructor solved the problem.

Many thanks anyway for your prompt reply and apologies for wasting your
time.

Thanks
Graham

Show the full log of the jar deployment. If the jar is something you
can post to SourceForge open a bug and attach the jar.

[JBoss-user] HELP : Stable JVM for running JBoss on Redhat 7.2 (smp) ??

2002-05-23 Thread Craig O'Shannessy

Hi,

I am desperately trying to keep JBoss running without the JVM crashing on
Redhat 7.2. I have spent days trying to track down the problems, but to
no avail. I cannot find a stable JVM to run with JBoss (both 2.4.5 or
3.0.0_RC2). We need to import large amounts of legacy data, and I can't
get more than 10% of the way through before the JVM crashes.

Does anyone have a stable PRODUCTION JBoss environment running on Redhat
7.2 SMP??, if so, please let me know what JDK you are using, and any
patches you have had to apply.

I have tried the following JDK's

Sun JDK 1.4.0
Sun JDK 1.3.1
Sun JDK 1.3.1_03
IBM JDK 1.3.1_01 (had to use "LD_ASSUME_KERNEL=2.2.5" for smp machine)
Blackdown JDK 1.3.1_01 (both native and green threads, both give sig 11)

ALL of them crash (with Signal 11, SEGV) (both the smp (dual athlon)
machine and uni processor machines). I have been researching this with a
colleague for days, and no one seems to have a solution to this issue. If
you have faced this issue and solved it, PLEASE let me know!

I upgraded glibc*rpm which helped with a SMP specific (pthreads) sig. 11
crash, but I am still don't have a production qualitiy environment.

HELP!! I *REALLY* don't want to have to run this server on windoze, and
we have to deploy soon.

Please CC me in any reply.

Thanks,

Craig O'Shannessy
