RE: [JBoss-user] transactions & synchronizations

2003-07-10 Thread Jeremy Boynes
There are a couple of solutions to this:
1) The finder takes a 'update-intent', basically exclusive, lock in the
database.
A fix that does this has been vetoed by Bill Burke, although you can
implement it
yourself with BMP or by using database-specific for
the finder.

2) Leave the finder running with a Read-Committed isolation level and
have the entity
implementation deal with the phantom case by checking that the
current values match
the values that caused the object to be returned by the finder. In
other words,
check that foo is still null when you try and set it to bar and if
not throw an
   exception indicating concurrent modification.

Not that I know of, you should be able to open as may connection as you
want.
Can you show some code how you open and use the connection?

[JBoss-user] transactions & synchronizations

2003-07-10 Thread Ittay Dror
Say I have the following case:

1. a session bean queries with ejb ql for entity beans with a specific
property value. name the property 'foo' and the value 'bar'. It queries
the entities whose foo property is null, selects the first and sets its
value to bar

2. two threads call the session bean:
   a. thread-a does the query, gets an entity, changes its value to bar.
   b. in the meanwhile, thread-b also does the same and therefore gets
the same entity bean.

3. say the session bean's method is synchronized (inside of it, there is
a synchroniztion). this doesn't help, since jboss only commits the
changes once the method returns, so when thread-a steps out of the
synchronization block, thread-b steps in, before jboss commits the
changes.

what is the solution to this? transactions? (i've tried RequiresNew,
with no luck) or syncrhonizing before the call to the session bean
(rather than in it)? this means every client needs to add this
synchronization..

please help,
thank you,
ittay

[JBoss-user] Re: Strange behavior when changing bean properties

2003-07-10 Thread Ittay Dror
ok, i think i found the bug. two threads try to use the (stateless)
session bean. although there is synchronization inside it (in the class
level), jboss doesn't update its interal data till after the call to the
session bean returns.

1. thread-a calls the session bean (through a local interface)
2. the call reaches the bean implementation
3. thread-b calls the session bean
4. the call reaches the bean implementation, but doesn't go further
since there is synchronization
5. thread-a executes the code, changing the property
6. thread-b enters the synchronized block and executes the query
7. thread-a returns from the method, where jboss closes the transaction,
updating its internal data.
8. thread-b works with an old data!

is this an accurate description?

how can i overcome this in a j2ee manner?

thank you,
ittay

[JBoss-user] Strange behavior when changing bean properties

2003-07-10 Thread Ittay Dror
Simply put, I change a property of a bean, I see it changes in the DB,
but JBoss thinks the property hasn't changed.

Details:
1. I have a bean, I change an integer property of it from null to some
number. In the debugger, if I inspect the property (bean.getFoo()), I
get the number.
2. Shortly after, I query for all beans whose property is not null. I
get the same bean as before in the results. In the debugger, when I
inspect the property, I get null.
3. When I look in the DB log files, I see there is a call to 'update'
with the right value for the property (the number), there is no 'update'
to set the property to null.
4. If I get the query from the DB log files and run it myself, the row
for which the property has changed is not returned.

Thank you,
Ittay

Hello Alexey,

what about other fields? Do their values correspond to the context

present?

When do you perform the check?
More details would really be appreciated.

RE: [JBoss-user] sync-on-commit-only

2003-07-10 Thread Jeremy Boynes
This causes the container to flush e.g. before executing finders, which
is required (and often desired) behaviour. Setting this to true will
mean finders will not be aware of any modifications already made in the
transaction. I'd recommend leaving it at false unless you know that your
application can handle this, or unless you do many find/modify cycles on
a single instance in a single transaction.

[JBoss-user] JBoss Featured in Out-of-the-Box Open Source distribution

2003-07-10 Thread Rod Cope
JBoss 3.2.1 is included in Out-of-the-Box 2.1, an intelligent distribution
of over 100 Open Source projects for Java developers on both Linux and
Windows.

Major changes from 2.0:
  * Added Oracle and DB2 integration for JBoss and the sample projects
  * Semi-automatic database switching for JBoss and the samples after
installation
  * Support for Red Hat, SuSE, and Mandrake Linux (in addition to Windows
XP/2000)
  * Added PHP, phpMyAdmin, and phpBB for LAMP developers
  * Dozens of project updates, including JBoss, Apache, Struts, Hibernate,
MySQL, PostgreSQL, etc.

The free Community Edition is fully functional, does not expire, and does
not require registration. It installs just over 25 of the 100+ projects,
including JBoss, MySQL, and Castor, and comes with the Castor sample project
and nearly all of the Enterprise Edition documentation.

Please visit http://www.ejbsolutions.com for details or to download the free
Community Edition.

Thanks,
Rod

RE: [JBoss-user] JMS behind a firewall.

2003-07-10 Thread Lyvers, William
Thanks,
We have the Http invoker layer working, but we are getting the following exception
when using the UIL2 invocation layer. It looks to be occurring when the client tries
to close the connection after sending the message. When we use the UIL invocation
layer, the exception does not occur. The client is a servlet that establishes a
connection each time, sends a message then closes out the connection. Are clients
only allowed to establish one connection with the UIL2 layer?

Hi Billy,

You can tunnel all your RMI calls through HTTP/S, this would include
JNDI lookup calls. So you would only need one port for that and than use
something like UIL or better UIL2 for JMS which will also need just one
port.
We have a setup like this in production using JBoss 3.0.x.

Sebastian

[JBoss-user] entityContext.getEJBLocalObject() returns local interface of another object

2003-07-10 Thread Alexey Yudichev
I am using Jboss 3.2.1
Sometimes entityContext.getEJBLocalObject() returns local interface of another
instance of the same entity bean.

I have a superclass for all my entities in application which implements EntityBean's
setEntityContext() method and saves entityContext in a field.
Inside one of business methods of one of entity beans I check if a primary key
constructed from key CMP field(s) matches a primary key obtained from
entityContext.getEJBLocalObject().getPrimaryKey(). Sometimes they do not match:
entityContext.getEJBLocalObject().getPrimaryKey() returns primary key of another
instance of the same entity bean.

I have sometimes situations when user is logged in as one customer and enjoys
privileges of another...

This happens ~20 times a day with a particular single object for me... I could install
some kind of bug trap logging some debug info to help fix the bug.

thank you for your suggestions, however, the writing to file is an
example only. imagine that instead of writing to a file, i want to
interact with another application or do some other work, for example,
change some entries in a singleton (a regular object). this work should
not (in my opinion) be done in the entity bean, since this is not
persistence related.

Re: [JBoss-user] synchronize on a bean

2003-07-10 Thread Dietmar Posselt
Hi Stephen,

As Ittay wrote, the file access is only an example.

I think we might come to a similar problem. In our case we have
a cluster with the same JMS queue on each node (so we can send
messages even if some nodes in the cluster are down). At a different
division we have one jboss with one remote message driven
bean for any queue/node on the cluster (that makes several MDBs
that might receive messages concurrently).
Now if we want to serialize these messages we need a session
bean with serialization. This is as far as i understand the same
problem as Ittay has.
Serialization might be necessary to trigger some external actions
via sockets or rmi.

Re: [JBoss-user] synchronize on a bean

2003-07-10 Thread Stephen Davidson
Hi Ittay.

I think what Alex meant is that in this case, the Entity should
have the file contents as its value. This is a trick I have
pulled a couple of times.
The other option, why don't you open the file as "Locked",
so that some other software application in the OS can't do
anything while you are working on this file?

Steve

Yes, that would seem like a good approach. I opened a feature request on

I agree, but that would be specific to the xmbean implementation.
usually a managed resource is not aware of the surrounding model mbean.

That might be done with a specific interface in jboss mx, like

interface XMBeanAware
{
void setXMBean(XMBean xmbean);
}

3.2 allows for control of the class loading behavior at the ejb-jar,
war, sar
and ear levels and this is defined in the various dtds in the dist under
docs/dtds. The META-INF/jboss.xml config for the ejb-jar would be
something
like:

   jboss.test:ejb-jar=log4j113-ejb.jar

Hi Gurus(This time Adrian and Scott ;-),

You saved
me a day...(PHEW!!!)
The issue
was one of the methods in the Value Object. It was using System.arrayCopy
to assign the recieved array parameter to member array. Instead of this
when just replaced the method with a direct assign everything worked
fine. Not SUre why an arrayCopy() cause such an exception. arrayCopy()
seems to be a efficient method only, right?

Scott,
then regarding the second error you mentioned on class loader, I am not
able to get it clear.
18:01:00,395 ERROR [String] JobTask:run() - Throwble.

method

Actually this error was not there when using 3.0.4. After moving to 3.0.7
it started appearing. The issue with the access modifer. But I checked
the access modifier. Its OK. i.e both the classes JobTask and
TimerManager are in the same package and removeOnceSchedule() is having
protected.

Could you please expalin?

Re: [JBoss-user] apache to JBoss/Tomcat forwarding

Hi,

I look at the mod_jk configuration.

With JBoss3.2.1-Tomcat4.1.24, which directory is considered to be the
Tomcat root ? I only found a sar file which holds all tomcat files.

If you have experience with mod_jk, is it correct to do :

|Alias /webapps /webapps|

JkMount /webapps/* mainWorker

So *ALL* apps deployed under JBoss could be available through apache ?

Thanks,
