I'm not realy good at juggling and gymnastics, so I keep faar from that . That
is why I use tasks if I need to know who did what and when. So the answer is
largly already in the initial question. If it is relevant, use a task (you do
not need the jBPM ui for this if you do not want to) if you want to have logged
who did what when no task is used, file a Jira issue (as a feature request, not
a bug)

2006-07-07 Thread kukeltje
Intro:
Read the docs, getting started, wiki, as well.

1: If they are deployed they are in the db and do not need to be loaded each
time (btw, this is in the docs) The interaction with the engine is though the
JbpmContext as can be read/seen in all code (and docs) and JMS or any wrapper
you want to write yourself (this is in the docs two)

2: jBPM IS the engine. See answer 1

3: jBPM IS the engine, see answer 1

4: jBPM IS the engine

To be honest without wanting to offend you, I think you do not (yet) have a
pretty good understanding of the components of jBPM.

2006-07-07 Thread kukeltje
Brad, I said it is in the docs because it IS in the docs:

http://wiki.jboss.org/wiki/Wiki.jsp?page=JbpmGettingStarted (among others)

Regarding the courtesy, no I do not want to tell everybody that my knowledge is
superiour to someone else, nor did I do that here (but I do happen to know the
answer to life, the universe and everything). On the other hand, I've never
seen anyone posting a (basic) question (which by itself is fine) and stating
that he/she has a pretty good understanding of the jBPM components. Again I
explicity stated that I did not want to offend you and I don't (I'd repond much
less nice then ;-))

Now back to your new questions:
1: Not yet, although it would be nice. I myself am thinking of packaging a
process in a war file and have a startup servlet deploy the process if needed
(e.g. if it is a newer version)
2: This is unrecommended usage and will probably be deleted. It was there
because there have been issues with blobs in certain databases.

Yep, it will never hurt to raise a Jira issue for this. That way it is and
stays on the radar. But be sure to fill in the environment correctly and do not
assign a version to it since it is not supposed to work in the environment you
have. (well, not realy but you get my point)

Imo it would be a nice generic enhancement if this was basic functionality of

1: The login module is a JBoss AS thing. Look the AS forum/docs/wiki etc to
replace it. But watch out, the identity module is not the same as the
loginmodule. If you need to retrieve roles etc, you must implement your own
assignment handlers!!
2: Search the api, the docs etcthere must be a way to retrieve the current
actor ;-)

3: Not yet, in 3.2 there will be something for this. Look at cvs for this.

[JBoss-user] [JBoss Portal] - Help offered: JBoss Portal on BEA WLS 9

2006-07-05 Thread kukeltje
Hi,

I've seen that JBoss portal currently does not run on other appservers than
JBoss AS. But that it still is a focus to be able to do so.

I'm in the process of convinging others in our organisation that we do not need
Bea WLS as an appserver and can run JBoss as well. They are not ready (yet),
but we are allowed to start using JBoss jBPM and Alfresco (ok not JBoss but a
nice product) The latter also has a portlet that runs in JBoss Portal, which
lead me to the thing that it would be nice to have jBPM portlets as well,
BUT. it all has to run on Bea WLS 9 for now. To get JBoss portal in, we (me
and a fried) could spend some time looking into issues on getting JBoss Portal
running on WLS, but only if there are not to many issues (the time is limited).

If there already is a list with issues (I did not find anything in Jira or on
the wiki and certainly not in the docs, but I could have used incorrect search
terms, so spank me if I did). That would be helpful. I've installed Bea WLS
already and will try to get some results (positive or negative) with trying to
get JBoss Portal on there.

Thanks in advance,

Thomas,

Thanks for the quick response. I also meant 'server agnostic' but indeed did
not mention that. Nowing it is planned for 3.0 is more then I could find...
but ;-)

Do you mean by this that we should *not* spend any time on trying to get issues
fixed if we find them when trying to run JBoss Portal on WLS 9? Will it be to
difficult? Does the portal code need refactoring to become server agnostic?

If so, we currently have to look for another product, but no worries, I'll try
to switch to JBoss Portal as soon as possible.

:-P It's not so much religious as it is that they (internal support) are
afraid employees need to have new training etc.

Regarding the jira issue... I get the point. Never thought this was the
'container' issue for running it on other appservers. Sounds like I have to
speed up the internal memo to get the opportunity to talk to Kris d'Hooge from
JBoss Belgium/Benelux. So I'm working on speeding things up, but in a different
way.

Thanks anyway. Would be good however to add a small comment to the jira issue
that this is needed to run it on other appservers. Or make a new Jira issue
that is dependant on this one. It shows up on the then.

[JBoss-user] [JBoss jBPM] - Re: Help required with exception handling on transitions

2006-07-04 Thread kukeltje
hmmm... normally I would agree, but we have a kind of identical situation as
well. The customer thinks he wants to put the process in a certain error state
if something happens. If we model this in (from EVERY state) it gets kind of
blurry. 50% of all icons in the process are decisions all going to this error
state. The customer has the choice to correct something and then put the
process back in the state it came from. If you've ever seen a web, it must have
been based on this process diagram. So Manipuliating the tokens, just for this
kind of error handling seems a good solution for us. Luckily we do not have the
problems that errors on actions on transitions (mainly sending a mail or
something like that) is not an issue for us.

In short you mean that an errorhandler works when an error happens on an action
that was not on a transition.

Regarding the storage: then store it somewhere else. It's up to you.

We have to be, our time is precious and costly. We cannot start helping people
on such fundamental issues. If these things already pos a problem, I'm holding
my breath for what is comming up next.

Besides that. The list of what jBPM needs is *not* on the hibernate site. It is
bigger and posted in the forum several times, in the wiki and docs. So if
people start doing things *without* knowing what they are doing. We are hard
and will be hard in the future as well.

btw,

probably had some maintanance) Sorry diwaker for my response in the private

today, come on. Give everybody some time to respond. And if it is realy urgent,
again I suggest buying commercial support from anybody but preferably JBoss ;-)
(although I do not even work for them)

Now with regard to the problem.

The thing is that the error here contains to little info. Look at the
stacktrace in the logging to see if it contains more info and post it here if
it does not mean anything to you

[JBoss-user] [JBoss jBPM] - Re: State events fire order

2006-06-28 Thread kukeltje
Read the logging again

The token is in state first, then you signal it and get the following logs:

  | 13:34:14,151 [Thread-0] DEBUG GraphElement : event 'before-signal' on
'State(first)' for 'Token(/)'
  | 13:34:14,151 [Thread-0] DEBUG GraphElement : event 'node-leave' on
'State(first)' for 'Token(/)'
  | 13:34:14,151 [Thread-0] DEBUG GraphElement : event 'transition' on
'Transition(to_end)' for 'Token(/)'
  | 13:34:14,151 [Thread-0] DEBUG GraphElement : executing action
'action[action]'
  | 13:34:14,167 [Thread-0] DEBUG VariableContainer : update variable 'message'
in 'TokenVariableMap18b81e3' to value 'About to finish!'
  | 13:34:14,167 [Thread-0] DEBUG GraphElement : event 'node-enter' on
'EndState(end)' for 'Token(/)'
  | 13:34:14,167 [Thread-0] DEBUG GraphElement : event 'process-end' on
'ProcessDefinition(cpob)' for 'Token(/)'
  | 13:34:14,167 [Thread-0] DEBUG GraphElement : event 'after-signal' on
'State(first)' for 'Token(/)'
  |

Which is correct, you get a
- before signal (which is a way of telling the system: 'hey there is a signal
comming'
- then you leave state first
- you are taking the to_end transition
- you enter state end
- the process ends
- the signal is completely processed

So there is nothing wrong with your logging, you just read it wrong.

Remember, jBPM does nothing unless you signal it in one way or another. If you
start reading the log from the moment you signal it, everything is correct

currently it (obviously) does not, but I would not mind having it fire with the
restriction that one can determine if it was a pooled assingment event. We
could also add another event (poold-task-assign), but then you have to add two
eventhandlers if both can happen.

I think the latter is easier to implement

Simple, jBPM has (human) task functionality by default. Oracle had to make a
proprietary extension to BPEL to achieve the same. So tasks are already 'async'

Could you elaborate on this? Besides the async continuations, jBPM runs in the
client thread (e.g. the webapp, fat client or whatever). It is a library, not a
full separate server

Async conituations? Mainly in the case of long running automated actions which
you do not want to block a thread, transaction etc.

2006-06-26 Thread kukeltje
One solution we (the company I work for) are thinking of for a kind of BAM
solution is to periodically poll the DB. This way we do not have to change any
code in jBPM and retrieving all starts, node enters and end since the last poll
(we keep the ID of the last log record) doe not lead to a major performance
issue. We think of polling the DB every 5 minutes.

This solutution is used by more BAM suppliers to be able to do things without
having to work with BPM suppliers to adapt the BPM engine.

[JBoss-user] [JBoss jBPM] - Re: ACL tied Transitions

2006-06-18 Thread kukeltje
First, it is a clearly stated issue, so no elaboration needed.

Creative solution:

- make one task node (in progress)
- make two tasks in there, one for the developer, one for the QA
- create two screens, one for the developer, one for the QA
- have each screen have just a subset of the transitions

hey, maybe you should not even use one state, but a fork, parallel task nodes
and a join. Mixing up the higher level state of a case and indivual 'task' can
make things more complex than they realy need to be.

Cancelling things in a process is often needed in multiple places. I personally
do not model these as state/task, just separate pages, more like a case
manager. The same is (imo) true for reassignment things. Only if an assignment
step is explicit, we put it in the model. Otherwise it is a separate action on

It's not only SWT that makes the editor, it is EMF, GEF etc.. as well. If I

about the rest of the functionality I cannot comment on doing it in one

If I just search the jbpm forum with the word decision, I get 123 hits. number

So I dare to bluntly state that you either did not use the search functionality

one

the SWT based GPD is a designer, as is the rules editor. It is not the user
frontend. jBPM and Rules can be accessed from/integrated with Swing based apps
by using the api. So unless you elaborate a little on what your application is,
it is difficult to give a detailed answer
