no, you have to implement it yourself using hibernate queries or by

Thanks! In order to be complaint with all other Node implementations I think
the Decision class must also call the actions. So that way I don't have to add
new API to set decisionDelegation. Please let me know your thoughts. BTW I have
not committed code to Jboss before so any pointers to the right directions

This looks like a bug to me.

I made a change in Timer.java to fix this.

I inserted a line around line # 75 (in the execute() method):
executionContext.setTimer( this );

This sets the execution context's timer properly.

I have yet to write a JIRA issue for this though.

2006-07-10 Thread falazar
We have implemented the JBPM and are having similar problems trying to use a
group as an assignment.

After reading the many forums here, it appears we can modify the
jbpm/src/java.jbpm/org/jbpm/db/hibernate.queries.hbm.xml

Orig:

To include something like the query posted:
SELECT
   t.ID_ AS taskid,
   t.NAME_ AS taskname,
   t.DESCRIPTION_ AS taskdescription,
   u.NAME_ AS userid,
   t.START_ AS startdate,
   t.DUEDATE_ AS duedate,
   t.END_ AS enddate
 FROM jbpm_taskinstance t
 INNER JOIN jbpm_taskactorpool p ON t.ID_ =  p.TASKINSTANCE_
 INNER JOIN jbpm_pooledactor pa ON p.POOLEDACTOR_ = pa.ID_
 INNER JOIN jbpm_id_group g ON pa.ACTORID_ = g.NAME_
 INNER JOIN jbpm_id_membership m ON m.GROUP_ = g.ID_
 INNER JOIN jbpm_id_user u ON u.ID_ = m.USER_
 WHERE t.END_ IS NUL

Which fetches all tasks for a user that is in any of the groups.
This seems to work fine.
How can we merge these successfully in hibernate mappings, or has there been
any other solution put forward to implement the group(NAME) usage.

You're right... It looks like decision doesn't allow you to programmatically
create the decision handler.

My suggestion is to build jBPM yourself, and add in a method in Decision that
allows you to set the decisionDelegation.

Building jBPM yourself is easy, I'm doing it currently for some issue w/ Timers
not getting their execution context set properly.

Thanks for your help. I am copying the implementation of execute method code in
Decision class. This code checks the private decisionDelegation list for
handlers if there is one defined then it calls the handler. If you notice it
doesn't look for decision handlers in action list (If that is expected behavior
then this Decision implementation has broken the contract). So I guess that's
why the decision handlers were not called. I do not know if there is any other
alternative way to initialize the decisionDelegation. Please help me.

  public void execute(ExecutionContext executionContext) {
String transitionName = null;

try {
  if (decisionDelegation!=null) {
DecisionHandler decisionHandler = (DecisionHandler)
decisionDelegation.instantiate();
transitionName = decisionHandler.decide(executionContext);

Object result = JbpmExpressionEvaluator.evaluate(decisionExpression,
executionContext);
if (result==null) {
  throw new JbpmException("decision expression '"+decisionExpression+"'
returned null");
}
transitionName = result.toString();

  } else {

Iterator iter = decisionConditions.iterator();
while (iter.hasNext() && (transitionName==null)) {
  DecisionCondition decisionCondition = (DecisionCondition) iter.next();
  Object result =
JbpmExpressionEvaluator.evaluate(decisionCondition.getExpression(),
executionContext);
  if (Boolean.TRUE.equals(result)) {
transitionName = decisionCondition.getTransitionName();
  }
}

if (transitionName==null) {
  getDefaultLeavingTransition().getName();
}
  }
} catch (Throwable exception) {
  raiseException(exception, executionContext);
}

Transition transition = null;
if (transitionName!=null) {
  log.debug("selected transition name '"+transitionName+"'");
  transition = getLeavingTransition(transitionName);
} else {
  log.debug("no transition name selected: taking default leaving
transition");
  transition = getDefaultLeavingTransition();
}

if (transition==null) {

That is how you define actions... almost. Actions do not always have to be
with events. An action can be defined inside a Node (or Decision) as well.

You're on the right path, but don't be too quick to give up. You gotta make
sure all the elements are set up properly

Try doing a .setProcessDefinition(processDefinition); on both your action and
your delegation in addition to what you have.

You can load the process definition using the graph session like:

JbpmContext  jbpmContext = JbpmContext.getCurrentJbpmContext();
GraphSession  graphSession = jbpmContext.getGraphSession();

ProcessDefinition processDefinition =
graphSession.loadProcessDefinition(processDefinitionId);

Once the process is loaded, you can access any of its children.

Thanks.

Hi cpob,

Thanks for your response. The Action allows to set up handler?s trap one of the

I think API for setting up decision handler in "Decision" class is missing or
may be I am missing something here. Also I have modified my code to create an
action and associate with Decision but my handler wasn't called.

Decision amountcheck = new Decision();
amountcheck.setName("amountcheck");
processDefinition.addNode(amountcheck);

Delegation delegation = new Delegation();
delegation.setClassName("com.mycomp.test.AmountDecisionHandler");
Action action = new Action();
action.setActionDelegation(delegation);
amountcheck.setAction(action);

public static final String EVENTTYPE_TRANSITION = "transition";

You have to add the Handler to the decision node for it to work.

Look at the API for Decision.

There's a setAction method. Create a new action and set it to the decision
object using that method.

You'll have to investigate what creating a new action involves (you have to
create a new Action Delegation).

Hello,

In my junit code, I constructed a decision node and added transitions to it.
But I do not know how to add the decision handlers. The purpose of this unit
test is to prove all node classes can be created programmatically. Here is my
junit test code. The AmountDecisionHandler is a DecisionHandler and always
returns "forwardTo" value on decision method.
Please help me.

ProcessDefinition processDefinition =
ProcessDefinition.createNewProcessDefinition();
StartState startState = new StartState();
startState.setName("start");
processDefinition.addNode(startState);

Decision amountcheck = new Decision();
amountcheck.setName("amountcheck");
processDefinition.addNode(amountcheck);

State reenter = new State();
reenter.setName("reenter");
processDefinition.addNode(reenter);

State increase = new State();
increase.setName("increase");
processDefinition.addNode(increase);

EndState endState = new EndState();
endState.setName("end");
processDefinition.addNode(endState);

Transition amountCheckTxns = new Transition();
amountCheckTxns.setTo(amountcheck);

Transition successTxns = new Transition();
successTxns.setName("success");
successTxns.setTo(increase);

Transition failTxns = new Transition();
failTxns.setName("fail");
failTxns.setTo(reenter);

Transition endTrans = new Transition();
endTrans.setTo(endState);

//bind transitions to node
startState.addLeavingTransition(amountCheckTxns);
amountcheck.addLeavingTransition(successTxns);
amountcheck.addLeavingTransition(failTxns);
reenter.addLeavingTransition(amountCheckTxns);
increase.addLeavingTransition(endTrans);

ProcessInstance processInstance = new ProcessInstance(processDefinition);
AmountDecisionHandler.forwardTo ="success";
// after the first signal the AmountDecisionHandler of amountcheck
// would be called. The handler forwards to increase node imediately.
processInstance.signal();

assertSame(processDefinition.getNode("increase"),
processInstance.getRootToken().getNode());

processInstance.signal();

assertSame(processDefinition.getNode("end"),
processInstance.getRootToken().getNode());

processInstance = new ProcessInstance(processDefinition);

//now forward to "fail" state
AmountDecisionHandler.forwardTo ="fail";
// after the first signal the AmountDecisionHandler of amountcheck
// would be called. The handler forwards to reenter node imediately.
processInstance.signal();

assertSame(processDefinition.getNode("reenter"),
processInstance.getRootToken().getNode());

AmountDecisionHandler.forwardTo ="success";
processInstance.signal();

assertSame(processDefinition.getNode("increase"),
processInstance.getRootToken().getNode());

[JBoss-user] [JBoss jBPM] - Re: JBPM_LOG: who performed the transition?

2006-07-10 Thread m_ok
Thanks for replying. I'm not good at gymnastics and juggling either (but it's
always good for a laugh ; ).

Could you elaborate on your view of what JBPM_LOG is for?

I don't see a point in reanalyzing every task of a process every time I want to
provide a log to my users. I know I could store that info somewhere but then
again isn't that what the JBPM_LOG table is for?

>From my perspective, in a system, users do things and that is logged for
>reference/proof/audit, etc.

Another word for this is audit trail. I think of logging (as in the case of
JBPM_LOG and not log4j) as a synonym of audit trail and so I thought of logging
in jbpm in that sense.

Am I wrong in my assumption of what JBPM_LOG is for?

(Sorry to the OP for thread-jacking a bit.)

Thanks Ronald,

It's very useful to me and fixed my problem. I just replace ehcache-1.1.jar by

BTW: Why the servlet environment (I deployed in TOMCAT without EJB context)
works well but EJB? what are differences between these environments?

[JBoss-user] [JBoss jBPM] - Re: New jBPM Getting Started Documentation

2006-07-09 Thread n.belford
For anybody who wants a local copy of the getting started guide do this.

1. Use Firefox
2. Create two directories named Interim and Completed
3. With the geting started guide open in the wiki, use 'Save Page As' from the
Firefox File menu. Save the page as JBPMGettingStarted.html into the Interim
directory.
4. In the Interim directory, open the newly created JBPMGettingStarted.html
file with Firefox.
5. Use 'Save Page As' from the Firefox File menu again. Save the page as
JBPMGettingStarted.html into the Completed directory.

Thats it.

The JBPMGettingStarted.html in the Completed directory has an associated folder
with all the correct image files, and the links in the html document all point
to them. You can delete the interim directory and rename completed whatever you
like and move it wherever you like.

as said it is no jBPM error, try using the JBoss AS forum, but I think the
answer will be the same. You added a commons-logging jar. Try removing it. Why
did you assume changing the log4j config file would some this issue?

Ronald,

I got the solution.

It was a problemm related with the Web Container configuration used by JBoss.
It uses also commons-logging library and it looks as it has a defined
configuration for the version included.

The solution is:
- do not add any jar in the jbpm-server/lib/endorsed
- add the following jars in jbpm-server/server/jbpm/lib (do not add
commons-logging-xx.jar):
- activemq-core-4.0-RC2.jar
- backport-util-concurrent-2.1.jar
- activeio-core-3.0-beta1.jar

I'm not realy good at juggling and gymnastics, so I keep faar from that . That
is why I use tasks if I need to know who did what and when. So the answer is
largly already in the initial question. If it is relevant, use a task (you do
not need the jBPM ui for this if you do not want to) if you want to have logged
who did what when no task is used, file a Jira issue (as a feature request, not
a bug)

As you said it is a problem related with commons-logging addition.

I have tried changing the configuration of jbpm to use log4j_jbpm.xml instead
of the default log4j.xml without success.

Any clue would be appreciated.

this is no jbpm error. Look at the stacktrace. It is a log4j logging error,
probably (but that is just guessing) caused by you adding commons-logging to
the classpath

jBPM BPEL supports the entire XPath library (well, Jaxen does, we just use

The function library is described in chapter 4 of the XPath 1.0 specification.
The function you are looking for is starts-with.

2006-07-07 Thread kukeltje
Brad, I said it is in the docs because it IS in the docs:

http://wiki.jboss.org/wiki/Wiki.jsp?page=JbpmGettingStarted (among others)

Regarding the courtesy, no I do not want to tell everybody that my knowledge is
superiour to someone else, nor did I do that here (but I do happen to know the
answer to life, the universe and everything). On the other hand, I've never
seen anyone posting a (basic) question (which by itself is fine) and stating
that he/she has a pretty good understanding of the jBPM components. Again I
explicity stated that I did not want to offend you and I don't (I'd repond much
less nice then ;-))

Now back to your new questions:
1: Not yet, although it would be nice. I myself am thinking of packaging a
process in a war file and have a startup servlet deploy the process if needed
(e.g. if it is a newer version)
2: This is unrecommended usage and will probably be deleted. It was there
because there have been issues with blobs in certain databases.

It isn't a problem, it's more of a task to be done. It's a matter of querying
the database for unfinished inbound message activities and having the relation
service open a request listener for them. Not hard to do, but you'd have to be
familiarized with the JBPM BPEL internals.

So, yes, please wait for beta 2.

cpob,

Thanks for the reply, it was very helpful. So if I understand you correctly,
you are saying that I either have to load my business process programmatically
in my code, or I have to manually deploy it to a running JBoss server. Two
questions:

1. Is there a way to deploy a process archive (PAR) into the JBoss server
deploy directory in the same manner as a JAR, WAR, or SAR, and if so, what is
the impact on versioning?

2. One of the configuration files in the starter's kit, specifically
jbpm/src/resources/jbpm.sar/jbpm.properties, has a commented out section for
the property jbpm.files.dir, which has the comment above it that says:
"uncomment the next line to use the file systemm instead of the database for
storing files related to a process definition."

How does this come into play? I understand that this means processes will be
stored on the file system, but does this mean that they are *loaded* from the
filesystem as well, and should be deployed to that directory, or does this
means that an upload to the server or programmatic loading of the process
definition still must be done, and the engine will write to that directory
instead of the database. Additionally, do you lose versioning if you store on
the filesystem vs. the database?

Thanks for your help.

Brad

I almost posted a reply before Ronald did, and it was almost identical to what
he replied (the 4 listed responses at least).

Going through the source code for the WebApp provides a lot of help too, if you
haven't looked.

Now, back to your first question, you say:
brado wrote : in the examples, I see a runtiime method of deployment where a
process is uploaded to the server. I also see in the examples, programmatically
loading a process definition from a file. Obviously, I want to do neither of
these.

The thing is, you HAVE to do one of those. You have to deploy a process
definition to the jBPM engine for it to be available. Once it is deployed, it
is forever in the database, which will never have to be deployed again (even
between server restarts).

2006-07-07 Thread cpob
Action is not a valid element inside of state. A state is just a 'wait-state'
that sits there until someone signals the token out of it.

If you want a state that performs an action like that, use a node element. You
are allowed to put an action inside the node element like you are trying with
state. The action in the node will get fired whenever it gets to the node.

[JBoss-user] [JBoss jBPM] - Re: How to invoke a business process in JBoss

2006-07-07 Thread brado
Ronald,

First off, thank you for the reply. Any help I can get is appreciated. Second,
with regards to your comment:

> To be honest without wanting to offend you, I think you do not (yet)
> have a pretty good understanding of the components of jBPM.

I'd just ask you to consider your motivation and intended helpful purpose for
posting such a comment. For one, I'm here asking a question, so of course
there's something about jBPM I do not know -- that's the whole purpose for the
forum. You might as well post this "you do not have...good understanding"
comment as a reply to everyone who posts a question. Additionally, does such a
comment help? Does it encourage others who might be afraid to ask to post their
questions? And in general, does it promote a general courteous atmosphere here
on the forum? Or should we all give our own subjective zingers every time we
have an opportunity to point out that someone else's understanding isn't as
superior as our own?

Ok, leaving the issue of basic courtesy behind, here's where I'm coming from
technically:

1. There are a number of bugs in the ant files. It is clear that they were not
fullly tested.

2. The documentation is incorrect in places, which causes questions, so I
apologize if my questions seem elementary, but I'm attempting to clarify the
intent of jBPM usage, which isn't always clear from the documentation.

3. Regarding your answers:

1: "If they are deployed in the db" -- in the examples, I see a runtiime method
of deployment where a process is uploaded to the server. I also see in the
examples, programmatically loading a process definition from a file. Obviously,
I want to do neither of these. When JBoss is started/restarted, I want the
process definitions to be loaded and stored into the database once, without
manual intervention, like every other JBoss archive is handled. I also do not
want to have to manually load these process definitions from a file. The
examples which do so are helpful, but they somewhat suggest that this is
something that you'd need to do, rather than let some central engine load these
for you. If I have missed the specific part of the documentation which
addresses this, please direct me to it (link) -- it would be helpful not to
give a blanket "its in the docs" comment. I'm asking the question as a result
of reading the docs.

For starters, that would be good. Please understand that I've gone through the
examples, run successful unit tests, converted my database to Oracle, run
successful db tests (I might add here that the documentation and ant files need
some help), and read the documentation (which also needs help), have read some
source code, and I'm still having questions. Understand that other BPM engines
have different architectures, (which I've recently evaluated), so I'm asking
questions to be clear, rather than make wrong assumptions.

Again, your response, and any future ones, are greatly appreicated.

Cheers,

Brad

Intro:
Read the docs, getting started, wiki, as well.

1: If they are deployed they are in the db and do not need to be loaded each
time (btw, this is in the docs) The interaction with the engine is though the
JbpmContext as can be read/seen in all code (and docs) and JMS or any wrapper
you want to write yourself (this is in the docs two)

2: jBPM IS the engine. See answer 1

3: jBPM IS the engine, see answer 1

4: jBPM IS the engine

To be honest without wanting to offend you, I think you do not (yet) have a
pretty good understanding of the components of jBPM.

Can you expound on how this is done? The examples I have looked at have for the

so each of them is like an actor having id=actorid for the workflow . So one

You can enable logs by following these steps:

1. Open src/config/jbpm.cfg.xml

2. Configure the logging service:

  |
  |

  |
  |
  |
  |

3. Rebuild the service archive by calling any of the build.service.xxx target
of the ant build file in the distribution base directory

4. Enjoy :)

Problem solved! I simply have forgotten to add the pooled actor also to the
task instance itself, so that's the correct code:

[...]
PooledActor pooledActor = new PooledActor(actorId);
pooledActor.addTaskInstance(taskInstance);
hbSession.save(pooledActor);

pooledActors.add(pooledActor);
taskInstance.setPooledActors(pooledActors);
hbSession.save(taskInstance);

Thanks for the answers!

The necessity to know anticipatedly next taskNode("wait for money") to be
executed by an user is for showing in the interface of taskNode("evaluate web
order") the users and groups responsible for taskNode("wait for money") so that
the user who is executing taskNode("evaluate web order") can select the user or
the group for which it desires to delegate taskNode("wait for money").

I asked the same question a week ago and didn't get a response. So as far as I
know the API doesn't expose this information. The only way we've been able to
get that information is to use Hibernate getClass method.

Example

  | if(
Hibernate.getClass(processInstance.getRootToken().getNode()).equals(State.class))
 {
  |...
  | }

Class clazz = processInstance.getRootToken().getNode().getClass();

another idea might be

Same question.

How can I know which node will be executed after the current one ?

How can I know who is to execute it ?

In a context like start>A>B>C>End , that is really linear say that token is in
A, signal is sent, token goes to B. How can I know that next step/state/node is
C before to signal ?

Thanks

2006-07-06 Thread marazik
Thanks for the prompt response. I found out how to get the current logged in
user; from the execution context you can get the actorId
executionContext.getJbpmContext().getActorId()

I am still facing problems though with the users authentication replacement. I
tried checking the JBoss AS forums, as you said but all the Login customization
are about the JBoss Portal.

I don't see what am i looking for under JBoss AS in terms of logging in. I am
not familiar with JBoss but when u run the server I don't see a default web app
with login that i want to replace.
I saw the forums of the portal but i don't see how this relates to what I want
to do as I don't have the portal modules at all.

I would appreciate any help as where to start if I want to authenticate users
on the JBPM from some other source (basically an LDAP) than what is currently
happening from the table JBPM_ID_USER and contiue to use the same jBPM
interface.

thanks

2006-07-06 Thread gregoiredx
Sorry I did post before finishing...

Hello,
I'm testing jBPM and it really is a good product.
But I'm stuck with a problem when trying to identify node "real" Class type
when the process definition is retrieve from datablase.

More practicallly :
JbpmContext jbpmContext = JbpmConfiguration.getInstance().createJbpmContext();
try {
ProcessInstance processInstance =
jbpmContext.loadProcessInstanceForUpdate(processInstanceId);

processInstance.getRootToken().getNode().getClass();
<= this always has org.jbpm.graph.def.Node$$EnhancerByCGLIB$$a35a6dd8 as value

How could I get the real type (TaskNode, StartState,...)?
(without using the xml definition)

thank you

[JBoss-user] [JBoss jBPM] - Re: Deploying JBPM

2006-07-06 Thread fwshk
Hi Viegas,

I meet a similar problem before.

I unzip starter's kit and execute the start script of the pre-configured jboss
The JBoss start and http://127.0.0.1:8080/jbpm haven't response
And the problem fixed after restart jBoss

I don't know what is the reason, but the problem haven't meet again.

Roy
