Hampir semua distro menyertakan xmms (bukan x.mms). Tapi yang biasanya
terjadi adalah xmms tidak dapat memainkan mp3 karena untuk distro tertentu
(redhat 9, fedora, suse, opensuse, ?) tidak menyertakan plugins libmpg123
(terkait masalah license). Untuk plugins tersebut dapat di cari di
google.com . Atau kompilasi dari source code.

untuk belajar linux memang musti dibiasakan, semakin sering make, semakin
kita akrab, banyak sekali cara intstall xmms, tergantung distonya, make rpm
-ivh nama_paket_xmms untuk redhat cs, dpkg -i nama_paket xmms untuk debian
cs, dsb. sedangkan distro yang sudah built in xmms setahu saya sih
slackware, suse, mandrake.

gitu dulu ya...

Setiap distro punya tool sendiri untuk nginstall, jadi punya cara yang 
beda-beda tapi kalo sudah ke text mode banyak yang sama. Kalo paket yang 
diinstall .rpm ya... pake:

#rpm -ih namaprogram.rpm

Kalo .tar.gz, buka kompresnya dulu trus baca README-nya, biasanya cuma pake
#./configure
#make
#make install

Tapi tidak semua aplikasi gitu caranya, ada yang lebih mudah dan lebih sulit 
dari itu. Kalo ada masalah posting aja ke sini, insyaalloh banyak yang bantu.

Kalo untuk install di semua distro kamu mesti download
versi source nya. Biasanya bernama xmms-xxx-x.tar.gz
Ekstrak filenya.
CAra installnya disertakan kok di situ. Baca aja, kalo
gak di situsnya.
Biasanya sih 3 langkah ajaib ini :
./configure
make
make install <--- yang ini dari root
