[JOYnet] my comments on biji's mail

2002-01-17 Thread Ravi Vaz

 Hi Joynetters,
Firstly let us put things in perspective... What we have in Church are "Statues " not
"idols".
I totally agree with biji about the various idols in our life like our pride, jobs,
money etc.. but they are inbuilt and take some help from the master to break...
Are they not enuf that we want to add more...
We think that we r hurting people by refusing the prasad...
When we do accept it.We r only hurting our selves and our relationship with God , and
we r also making them a reason for us to sin against first commandment. Thus putting
them in sin..
we have to decide what to do...go against god ,or go against my friend..
A friend neednt be good to u all the time..he is one who does what is good for u at
all times..
Let us strive to be Good Friends to our friends..and god will bless us and them also..
Trust him with the relationship part..he will help them understand...
Love and Prayers

finally the procession of the idol with people
indulging in alcoholism, eating lots of non-veg
food,bursting of crackers, etc.

What is our stand on this?

I do understand that the idols are a symbol and
representation of saints,Jesus,Mother Mary etc. Our
church goers forget that our God is a living God who
is interested in becoming the Lord of their hearts and
lives and not in the external observances as written
in Isaiah.

What are we doing about this?Tell to stop this to our
own Catholic friends with due explanation and they
will be the first people to hit back us.

There are lot of other idols in our lives which takes
priority over Jesus as Lord like our immediate
priorities and concerns, our pride, our career, our
family, our job, etc. and this list goes on.

Is this not idol worship? What is our collective stand?

[JOYnet] My Main Switch turns 57!

2002-01-17 Thread Josun Jose

Dear e-family,

Yesterday 17th January was the birthday of one of the greatest souls I owe my
existence to. My daddin turned 57.! (i used to call him main switch! that was
before i became a JY)
We started our celebration at 1am yesterday. We had a beautiful prayer
session, each one thanked God for our loving daddin. After that we made daddin
kneel down and we laid hands on him and prayed (there was a small scuffle
between my last two brothers! They wanted to lay their hands on the same part
of daddins head!!!) My mummy said a beautiful prayer for the man with whom
she's shared 23 years together and 6 strong, healthy and wonderful children!
(those were her words ok). She thanked God for all the years she and daddin
spent together, all the struggles and all the joys that came along the way.
She thanked God for daddins parents for bringing up such a wonderful man (for
her)..it was truly a beautiful time.

After the praying over, we put daddin in the middle and started throwing
positive strokes at him. (Jesus youth Style!) Each one of the seven of us said
positives that we had seen in our daddin...there again mummy topped the list!
She saw the most positives in daddin.

Daddin cut the cake and gave a piece to mummy, and smeared some icing on her
face.as if that was a signal for us, each one assaulted the cake (we never
cared to cut in in geometrical shapes!) and started slinging icing on each
others faces!! Very little of the cake went into our mouths! Becoz of my
height everyone had a hard time smearing on my face. I smeared on everybodys
face..i was the only one who came out with the least icing on my face. Haha
(this is one of the zillion advantages of being tall!)

On completion of that episode each one brought the gifts they got for daddin,
I bought him a book, my mummy also bought him a beautiful book (chicken soup
for the fathers soul) my brothers bought him a few handkerchiefs, and sisters
got him a shirt.

My parents embraced, and as they were swaying in each others arms they kept
saying to each other, "Thangam you are Gods gift to me" and my mom would
reciprocate "Thangam you too are Gods precious gift to me "(My parents call
each other thangam, thangam. I was told it means gold or something) there were
tears of joy in both their eyes, after their cuddling session which lasted for
about 5-10 minutes, each one of us got a bear hug from daddin...he nearly
crushed my ribs!

Remember all this is occurring after 1am in the morning, daddin then said a
thank you to each one of us. We had a wonderful time joking, remembering our
sweet memories of the past, we asked daddin and mummy all sorts of weird
questions that I feel embarrassed writing here. (if I ask those questions to
any other lady, im surely in for shoes and slippers on my face!! no doubt
about it!) I asked them how they met? I asked daddin what was it in mummy that
swept him off his feet that finally he married her (to which he replied I had
better mind my own business!!). Still undaunted I asked daddin whether any of
the 6 of us was an accident! (see, I can become very uncivilized at times!) to
that he said something very profound! He said, "NO, none of you was an
accident, thangam and me have have always felt that all six of you are our
greatest wealth and investment!!" (Wow daddin & mummy! Bravo! I promise your
wealth will grow beyond your wildest imaginations!) They told us they have
been practicing NFP from the time of their marriage (I swear I never knew
that!, I thought NFP was having 1-2 children the natural way), "we have never
used any or artificial methods or contraceptives (Augustine my youngest bro.
Interrupted "what are contraceptives??" Akku is only in the 3rd standard) from
the time of our marriage" they said. It was a frank and a very meaningful time
we had together. I'll never forget it.

None of us wanted to sleep. We went on talking, pulling each others legs, then
my mom and dad both told us, "we are praying for a vocation from our family, I
hope at least one of you will take up priestly or religious life as your
vocation.." No comments on that:)

Like that it went on till about 3:00 am. After that we decided to go to
sleep. I set the alarm clock at 6:00 am coz I had to get ready and go to
office. I was awakened by the shrill noise of the alarm clock that started
blaring. I got up from bed and hit the snooze button and was about to go to
sleep again, that's when the noise of free praise caught my ears.I got up and
slowly went to the room where my parents sleep..there on the bed sitting
beside each other were my parents holding hands and saying their morning
prayer together..

Special thanks goes to my sister Betty for planning this time of love
together as a family. Bets has really revamped and revolutionized our family
bond after she became a fulltimer. God bless her abundantly for it:)

I have no reason to boast, or impersonate an I-am-better-off-than-thou
attitude. No, our family is off track and derails more than 9

mom asked little Johny to make the sign of the cross.
so Johnny started... in the name of the father and of
the son and of the mummy amen...
mom corrected johnny saying Johnny it is not in the
name of the mummy but that the of the holy spirit
amen.

Re: [JOYnet] workings of the Holy Trinity

2002-01-17 Thread John Wilfred

Dear Shobith,

It is wonderful to see the ways in which the Lord is guiding you in each and
every small and big things in life.

I had an incident today. I had just come down from Mumbai yesterday and
needed money to keep the rest of the month going since this month our
expenditure was high. I was finding it difficult even to borrow some money,
even from daddy since already he has given so much. Even filling petrol in
our car seemed difficult. But today when I went to office, I was handed
over a cheque for Rs3900/- which I had claimed a month ago. It got cleared
from medical insurance at the time when we needed most.Yes Jehovah, Jireh,
our provider-let His Name be praised.

Our wedding anniversary was on the 15th and I was not sure whether we will
be able to celebrate it together (since Annie was in Mumbai and it seemed
that my leave could not be extended and I may have to return to Cochin). But
the Lord took care of all that. We could go for Holy Mass together. Praise
God.

I could also narrate another incident where the Lord took care of us two
weeks before. Annie was getting out of our car and I carelessly took the
vehicle forward as the block in front cleared. The rear wheel almost drove
through the ankle of her feet. But the Lord helped me take reverse
immediately. Her leg would have fractured, but Jesus saved us. There was
only a slight scar and her shoes got twisted temporarly. Praise God.

Annie John and Isaac will be in Kalyan till 3rd March. Mumbai joynetters can
contact her at her mummy's place at 95251-323827 or mail to her at

[JOYnet] Trinity-5

2002-01-17 Thread C.C.Joseph

Dear friends,

I hope that by now you have gone through my last mail on Trinity and have
spent time dwelling on the truths mentioned there.

In this mail I will point out the various things mentioned about the Trinity
in the Scriptures and the CCC. I cannot give a detailed teaching as it will
take me pages to write, so what I will do is just point out some facts and its
up to each one to go through and meditate upon them, if you have questions I
shall be happy to answer them. (Please read the whole mail)

I would like to mention again that we must understand the fact that God
cannot be restricted to time and space he is above them.

1) In the Bible if we read Gen 1:26 " then God said, 'let US make
humankind..."(RSV): what I want to point out is the word US, its plural not
singular how come, I believe it has to be the Trinity. {shows that there are
more than one person in the Trinity}

 2) CCC 233 "Christians are Baptized IN THE NAME of the Father and of the
Son and the Holy Spirit; NOT IN THEIR NAMES..." A very important observation
{shows that the Trinity is one}

 3) CCC 253 : "The Trinity is ONE. We do not confess three gods, but one
God in three persons... The father is that which the Son is, the Son that
which the Father is, the Father and the Son that which the Holy Spirit is,
i.e. by nature one God..

 4) CCC 254 : "The divine persons are really distinct from one another...
He is not the Father who is the Son, nor the Son he who is the Father, nor is
the Holy Spirit he who is the Father or the Son..

 5) CCC 255 : " the divine persons are relative to one another...
Because of that unity the Father is wholly in the Son and wholly in the
HloySpirit ; the Son wholly in the Father and wholly in the HolySpirit ; the
HolySpirit is wholly in the Father and wholly in the Son."

 6) CCC 258 : ".. one God and Father FROM whom all things are, and one
Lord Jesus Christ THROUGH whom all things are, and one Holy Spirit IN whom all
things are."

So We believe in one God but three persons. In other words one NATURE but
three PERSONS.

Its as someone pointed out earlier, the example regarding, water, ice and
water vapour. By nature they are H2O but they are distinct from each other, is
water H2O? yes, is ice H2O? yes, is water vapour H2O? yes, are they same no..

Or if you have three candles lit in a room, how many light we have? We only
have one light but how many candles...

Or if we look at the usual fan in our houses, how many leafs do they have
three, but how many fans one. The fan is incomplete with out the three leafs,
the three together make one fan.

Its something like this also; Father is like honey in the flower, Jesus is
like the honey in the honey comb and Holy Spirit is like honey in the mouth.

(as I use these earthly examples I am well aware that these finite things are
not enough to compare to the infinite )

Everything originates from the Father, is brought to completion & actualised
by the Son, and reaches man, is present to and experienced by means of the
HolySpirit

 The Four Statements about Trinity:

i) There is one divine nature and three persons

ii) No one is either of the other

iii) Father is God, Son is God, HolySpirit is God

iv) There is not three but one God

Please take time to dwell on these things if you are interested in Trinity
and I am sure that God who does not set any limits of us knowing him will
guide you in this journey.

Love and Prayers,

C.C.Joseph

May God Bless You

[JOYnet] STORY OF UR LIFE

2002-01-17 Thread JASON :)

--THE STORY OF YOUR LIFE...

Don't say you're not important,
It simply isn't true,
The fact that you were born,
Is proof God has a plan for you.

The path may seem unclear right now,
But one day you will see
That all that came before,
Was truly meant to be.

God wrote the book that is your life,
That's all you need to know.
Each day that you are living,
Was written long ago.

God only writes best sellers,
So be proud of who you are.
Your character is important,
In this book you are the "Star".

Enjoy the novel as it reads,
It will stand throughout the ages.
Savor each chapter as you go,
Taking time to turn the pages.

[JOYnet] Accepting food....

2002-01-17 Thread Saju Mathew Alex

Hi Friends,

I would like to share my views on accepting food offered to Gods in other
religions.

I feel that there is nothing wrong in accepting food offered to other
Gods(???).

I believe that all religions lead to God. This is in accordance to the
teaching of the Catholic Church (ref. 12 std cathechism textbooks published by
POC, Kerala).

We are not gaining anything by refusing food offered to other Gods... The only
advantage is that we can show others that we are different. Many evangelical
groups encourage this, ie, to show that we are different... in varying
degrees...

And there lies the problem.

Everyone whants to show that he is different from others... or he is superior
to others... See how man tries to separate God's creations...

Just imagine the condition if a person of one religion refuses the food made
by a person of another religion.(When hindu's make sadya's, they first offer
the food to their Gods before serving). The result will be religious
fundamentalism. (which ofcourse is very common nowadays...).

If I refuse the food offered by my friend saying that it has been offered to
HIS God, then he has every RIGHT to refuse the food my mother cooks in our
home (because she says a prayer of offering before cooking). This can be
extended to my friend not entering my house(because we pray in the living
room and according to him, it is a place of worship of another God...:-)

Who gains from this??? Definitely not God It is the people who propagate
such ideas who are finally going to gain from this... Because religious
fundamentism(in all religions) have always attracted supporters... and
money... It is exactly this kind of fundamentalism that has caused man to
raise his sword against his brother... all in the name of religion.

Few years back, when I stayed in a hostel, the butcher who used to supply meat
was a Muslim. He used to pray before killing the goat. They call it halal. If
the Christians in the hostel were to refuse the meat because it was offered to
his God, the butcher would of course go out of business:-)

Well... if my spirituality is something that gets affected by eating some
sweets offered by my Hindu friend, then I dont think it is worth
keeping:-))

There are many evangelists(both Catholic and Protestants) who propagate such
fringe ideas... and brand those who dont follow them as sinners.. During a
retreat, I have heard a Catholic evangelist preach that it is wrong to sing
Indian Classical Songs.. and the reason she gave was that those songs
contained the names of Hindu Gods...:-)

According to my understanding of Hinduism, Hindu's cannot be called
idol-worshippers. (On consecrating the idol, the Hindu priest(tantri) invokes
the spirit of God into the idol.) They donot worship the idol, they worship
the spirit of God that is in it. Just like how we catholics donot worship the
idols on our altars, but the spirit of God in it.

If we judge Hindu's as idol-worshippers, I can emphatically say that Catholics
are also idol-worshippers... if judged by the same standards.

Please do let me know if I am wrong on any of the facts stated.

[JOYnet] How blessed we are

2002-01-17 Thread JASON :)

Dear JY Pals

Today I was given one of the best news this year. Being a Member of Online
Prayer Ministries, I was told that 4 eprayer sites were going to close down
because of the software bubble burst. Many of us were feeling really dejected
because simultaneously we were told that people were not willing to fund
Religious and Prayer Sites as it seems for a lost cause. They would rather
fund Porn Sites cause it guaranteed them safe returns.

These Prayer sites were unable to renew even for a single month. Then by God;s
grace all of a sudden donations poured in. It seems that each eprayer site had
benefitted many patrons in the past and many had their prayers answered. Today
all those sites are afloat helping and carrying out prayer petitions for all
those desiring the love of christ.

One of the main sites forwarded me this :

We were able to even send assistance to several desperate families during this
past month.

a. Helen who lost her job and had hardly any money to provide food for her
family;

b. Wanda who ran out of food. Both her husband and herself lost their jobs;

c. Peg who needed just a little bit of help to provide for groceries;

d. Carol who has problems making ends meet. We were able to provide some
Christmas gifts for her family. Here is what she wrote concerning the gift:
"Thank you so much for the Walmart Gift Certificate. We got it yesterday, and
I already bought Matthew two shirts and two pairs of pants for his presents.
Thank you, Thank you, Thank you."

e. Ross who needed a rolator in order to be able to walk again. A subscriber
donated the money through us to be used for the purpose of this purchase. Here
is a thank you note from his wife Rev. Sandy: "The money came this evening. So
everything will be fine. Ross is moving so much better with the rolator and we
are praising God. I really think that it will help him to become stronger
because he is able to move around better. He has a little trouble mastering
the steps with it but I am sure that he will get it all down with use and
practice. I wish that you could be hear to see him. The difference is like
night and day. This is one praise report that only being here could do it
justice. This is truly wonderful. Thank God and you and all the prayer
partners.

So my dear Pals in Christ. lets work towards a worthy cause. Today we can
certainly help this world out. If not monetary wise, certainly prayers would
do. Our Lord seeks our prayers to help others.

[JOYnet] the food 'gone bad'

2002-01-17 Thread rose antony

No matter how well food is covered or how cold the refrigerator/freezer is kept, food
still stinks once it has "gone bad"!

This got me to thinking... Our character defects, our sinful habits, are kind of
similar. You can cover them with wrap, put them in a dish with a tight cover, shove
them out of sight WAY to the back, but... they still stink! Why does food go bad? It
is when food’s nutrients are contaminated by bacteria and then start to be consumed by
that same bacteria. In other words, the food has outlived its usefulness and becomes
corrupted. Preservatives only postpone the inevitable. But once it starts to "go bad"
it’s rotten!

Our character defect, may seem useful or fun for a while. It may appear to protect us
from hurt, fill us up for a time, prevent us from feeling our hunger or from
experiencing our empty reality. But eventually, the defect outlives its usefulness and
sin begins to grow. It grows until it becomes unmanageable, glaring, obvious, harmful,
and unmanageable. Preservatives? I know of a few "preservatives" that one may use
(excuses, denials, rationalizations... but these "preservatives" only work for so long
before the vile stinkin’ truth is really discovered.

No one can ignore the decomposition of what may once have been quite palatable. What’s
rotten is rotten for all to see. So the real question you and I are left with is
really quite simple: what are we keeping hidden and under wraps that we don’t want
known or seen? Yea, it might be quite nasty to clean it out, but remember, eventually
the rotten stuff in the hidden corner of hearts always finds a way to make its
stinkin’ presence known.

Do we want to throw it out and let God cleanse and renew us, or do we want to wait
until it makes us, and those around us, really sick? Don’t blame God when you are
tempted! God cannot be tempted by evil, and he doesn’t use evil to tempt others. We
are tempted by our own desires that drag us off and trap us. Our desires make us sin,
and when sin is finished with us, it leaves us dead. (James 1:13-15 CEV)

[JOYnet] A Miracle for just 1 dollar & 11 cents

2002-01-17 Thread rose antony

Hi All! The article below is a real-life story which is sure to move your heart.
Regards,

Rose.

Tess was a precocious eight year old when she heard her Mom and Dad talking about her
little brother, Andrew. All she knew was that he was very sick and they were
completely out of money. They were moving to an apartment complex next month because
Daddy didn't have the money for the doctor's bills and our house. Only a very costly
surgery could save him now and it was looking like there was no-one to loan them the
money. She heard Daddy say to her tearful Mother with whispered desperation, "Only a
miracle can save him now."

Tess went to her bedroom and pulled a glass jelly jar from its hiding place in the
closet. She poured all the change out on the floor and counted it carefully. Three
times, even. The total had to be exactly perfect. No chance here for mistakes.
Carefully placing the coins back in the jar and twisting on the cap, she slipped out
the back door and made her way 6 blocks to Rexall's Drug Store with the big red Indian
Chief sign above the door.

She waited patiently for the pharmacist to give her some attention but he was too busy
at this moment. Tess twisted her feet to make a scuffing noise. Nothing. She cleared
her throat with the most disgusting sound she could muster. No good. Finally she took
a quarter from her jar and banged it on the glass counter. That did it!

"And what do you want?" the pharmacist asked in an annoyed tone of voice. "I'm talking
to my brother from Chicago whom I haven't seen in ages", he said without waiting for a
reply to his question. "Well, I want to talk to you about my brother," Tess answered
back in the same annoyed tone. "He's really, really sick... and I want to buy a
miracle."

"I beg your pardon?" said the pharmacist. "His name is Andrew and he has something bad
growing inside his head and my Daddy says only a miracle can save him now. So how much
does a miracle cost?" "We don't sell miracles here, little girl. I'm sorry but I can't
help you," the pharmacist said, softening a little. "Listen, I have the money to pay
for it. If it isn't enough, I will get the rest. Just tell me how much it costs".

The pharmacist's brother was a well dressed man. He stooped down and asked the little
girl, "What kind of a miracle does your brother need?" "I don't know," Tess replied
with her eyes welling up. "I just know he's really sick and Mommy says he needs an
operation. But my Daddy can't pay for it, so I want to use my money". "How much do you
have?" asked the man from Chicago. "One dollar and eleven cents," Tess answered barely
audibly. "And it's all the money I have, but I can get some more if I need to.

"Well, what a coincidence," smiled the man. "A dollar and eleven cents-the exact price
of a miracle for little brothers."

He took her money in one hand and with the other hand he grasped her mitten and said
"Take me to where you live. I want to see your brother and meet your parents. Let's
see if I have the kind of miracle you need." That well dressed man was Dr. Carlton
Armstrong, a surgeon, specializing in neuro-surgery.

The operation was completed without charge and it wasn't long until Andrew was home
again and doing well. Mom and Dad were happily talking about the chain of events that
had led them to this place. "That surgery," her Mom whispered. "was a real miracle. I
wonder how much it would have cost?" Tess smiled.

She knew exactly how much a miracle cost. one dollar and eleven cents . plus the
faith of a little child. A miracle is not the suspension of natural law, but the
operation of a higher law.. (A TRUE STORY)

Re: [JOYnet] Please Share your views!!

2002-01-17 Thread Jennifer

Hi Friends,

I would like to share my views on this topic of accepting foods from the
idols.

Before even I use to think that there is no problem in accepting the
food offered to idols simply because I din't have the nerve to tell my
colleagues in the office and friends and I felt I would hurt them if I
didn't accept but evrytime I did this my conscience would prick me and I
would justify the act by saying a prayer of Blessing or as Biji mentioned
invoke the precious Blood of Jesus. However, in my mind I always knew that
I was a coward and was pleasing my friends but displeasing God but since I
could justify my act I could cover up.

Off late I had been to Potta (Divine Retreat Centre) for a REtreat and there
Fr. Matthew pointed out that receiving the food offered to idols is wrong
and not only wrong it's a sin against the first commandment of God. Well
there and there I made a decision to give up this sinful act.

The Word of God speaks about this at lenght. You can refer 1Corinthians 8,
wherein St. Paul says in the first half that those who have a sound
knowledge that there is only God and that the idols are not gods at all then
he can eat the food offered to the idols since but then in the 2nd half he
pointedly says that if our act induces the other beleiver who is not so
strong in his faith or who doens't have enough knowledge of his faith then
we would be responsible for the fall of that person.

Again in 1 Corinthians 10 : 20 - 33, St. Paul says that when you are invited
by a unbeliever for a meal, we are to eat what is set before us but if the
persion says that the food was offered to idols, then it is better not to
eat if for the sake of the person and our conscience sake. Again in the
verse 33, St. Paul says that I am not trying to do what is good for me but
what is good for most of the people so they can be saved. Now this is a
question to us., is my act of taking the prasad which my friend said is
offered to idols do good to that friend of minewell
yes that frind of mine will be pleased because he/she doesn't know the truth
and though we know we haven't shared that to that friend so am I saving that
soul or by my act I am agreeing with my friend that it is ok to pray to
idols. what I feel is that God gives us an opportunity to evangelise in
mall things but then we are so scared and we feel we are going to hurt the
person that we decide to overlook the consequences of our action and commit
an act which is very wrong in the eyes of God. Intead of evangelising and
taking up the opportunity we ourselves fall prey. God has set apart a
mission for each Christian to spread His good news to all but agin this is a
question Are we actually Witnessing Him? Idol worship is not a part of
Indian culture, it's a part of Indian worship. We can remind ourselves here
what happened to the Isrealites when they accepted the worship of the idols.
It began in a small way and then we
know what happened.

Again in 1Corinthians 10:14 - 22, St. Paul puts in very strongly and
directly that we are not suppose to eat the food offered to idols. I agree
what George said that whatever we eat is not going to make me impure but
what comes from my heart i what makes me impure. The intention with what I
am receiving the food offered to idols will make me impure (I hope what i
said made any sense). In this chapter, St. Paul is very convinced when He
says in verse 21 - 22: "You cannot drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of
demons also. You cannot share in the Lord's table and the table of the
demons? Are we trying to make the Lord jealous? We are not stronger than He
is, are we?". By accepting the food offered to idols we directly disobey
the first commandment : Love the Lord your God with all your heart, mind and
soul.

Again we are suppose to witness Christ in every situation of our lives but
if we reflect on Christ's life, we can see that He never compromised.
Accepting the food offered to idols merely on the context of respecting the
culture and tradition of the Hindus is what I feel is a compromise since we
are a minority. Again I am not against respecting the culture and tradition
of our country however what I feel is and correct me if I am wrong, idol
worship is directly related to the Hindu Religion and is not a part of
Indian culture. I think we need to differentiate between Religion and
Culture.

I really appreciate Josun's response in this particular situation and I feel
that he proved to be a witness of Christ and that is what we as Christians
suppose to be doing. We have to witness Christ not by compromising but by
standing strong by our faith.

Love & Prayers
Jennifer
