^Pope again cuts back participation in Mass, but voice is clear ROME _ Pope John Paul II curtailed his participation in his annual Corpus Christie Mass and procession Thursday _ another indication of his increasingly frail condition. The 82-year-old John Paul presided over the open-air evening Mass in front of St. John Lateran, Rome's cathedral, but one of his closest aides, Cardinal Camillo Ruini, actually celebrated it. After the Mass, the pope took part in a kilometer-long (half-mile) procession to another church, riding on the back of a white pickup truck covered with flowers and a canopy. The bed of the truck was outfitted with a gilded kneeler and chair, both of which were used by the pontiff. During his homily _ the only part of the Mass he celebrated _ John Paul appeared in good form, however, his voice stronger and clearer than it has been in recent weeks. At one point, he motioned for a young girl taking part in the offertory procession to approach him; he kissed her when she neared and smiled heartily afterward. The pope has cut back on several of his ceremonial duties recently, letting others finish reading his speeches and sitting and kneeling in prayer while others celebrate Mass. The pope has knee and hip ailments that make walking and standing difficult. He also suffers from the symptoms of Parkinson's disease, including slurred speech and a trembling hand. His speech was clear, though on Thursday night when he issued a call for young men to consider joining the priesthood. ``If one of you has inside of you the call of the Lord to give yourself totally to him to love him _ with an undivided heart _ don't stop yourself because of doubts or fears,'' John Paul said. ``Say yes with courage and without reserve, trusting in he who is loyal in every promise.'' Tens of thousands of people attended the Mass and the procession, which took the pope down a shady Roman street dotted with outdoor restaurants and shops. As his car drove slowly down, diners, waiters and children with ice cream cones stopped and watched. The pope returned Sunday from a grueling five-day trip to Azerbaijan and Bulgaria, during which the Vatican suggested that future trips might have to be curtailed because of his frail condition. Praise the Lord Today we celebrate the Feast of St. John of Arc St. Joan of Arc May 30 Patroness of soldiers and France St. Joan of Arc is the patroness of soldiers and of France. On January 6, 1412, Joan of Arc was born to pious parents of the French peasant class, at the obscure village of Domremy, near the province of Lorraine. At a very early age, she heard voices: those of St. Michael, St. Catherine and St. Margaret. At first the messages were personal and general. Then at last came the crowning order. In May, 1428, her voices told Joan to go to the King of France and help him reconquer his kingdom. For at that time the English king was after the throne of France, and the Duke of Burgundy, the chief rival of the French king, was siding with him and gobbling up evermore French territory. After overcoming opposition from churchmen and courtiers, the seventeen year old girl was given a small army with which she raised the seige of Orleans on May 8, 1429. She then enjoyed a series of spectacular military successes, during which the King was able to enter Rheims and be crowned with her at his side. In May 1430, as she was attempting to relieve Compiegne, she was captured by the Burgundians and sold to the English when Charles and the French did nothing to save her. After months of imprisonment, she was tried at Rouen by a tribunal presided over by the infamous Peter Cauchon, Bishop of Beauvais, who hoped that the English would help him to become archbishop. Through her unfamiliarity with the technicalities of theology, Joan was trapped into making a few damaging statements. When she refused to retract the assertion that it was the saints of God who had commanded her to do what she had done, she was condemned to death as a heretic, sorceress, and adulteress, and burned at the stake on May 30, 1431. She was nineteen years old. Some thirty years later, she was exonerated of all guilt and she was ultimately canonized in 1920, making official what the people had known for centuries. Her feast day is May 30. [JOYnet] Retreat 2
My dear ones in Jesus I would like to share something about how Jesus has worked in my life. I told u about the retreat in my previous mail. My brother had also attended this retreat along with me, but he was always sitting in the last row not interested in praying, sitting behind and dozing. On the last day the retreat was supposed to end at 5.30pm and at 4.30pm we were all praying to the Lord to baptize us with his Spirit and fire of his Love. even then my brother was at the end and the preacher called him in front and asked him dont u want the fire? He said yes just bcoz everyone was looking then the preacher asked us to praise loudly and that our praise should shake the heavens then he prayed upon my brother by putting his arms round him and we were all praising and singing loudly and just as we stopped our singing we saw that hearing all this singing and praise one thin man also had entered the hall and was singing and praising along with us (even though he didnot understand English).! ! Then he told in Konkani that he was never able to speak properly or pray, but as we were praising he too started praying and praising!!! Praise the Lord!! And about my brother he was always lazy to read the Bible or attend any prayers he used to attend only bcoz my dad used to send him. In the evening after the retreat we went home, that day he just had his food and slept and in the morning he got up early and near our house there is a Adoration Chapel (we had our retreat in the hall above this chapel), he woke up and didnt even have tea he just went there for adoration from 7.30am to 9am. Praise God!! Usually he doesnt go for mass without having a cup of tea even if it is late. My mom was surprise when he directly went to adoration chapel, she was asking me if the preacher had told in the retreat that they are supposed to come for adoration there? Now still he continues going, formerly he used to read the Bible only a small parah or some lines and that too rarely and sleep early , but now he sits for an hour reading the Bible before going to sleep, even if its 12midnight he sits. A MILLION THANKS TO MY JESUS BY WHOM ALL! T! HINGS ARE POSSIBLE!! I know even these million thanks are nothing when we just look at the marvellous things he has done in our lives. We just cant imagine what is His love for us, its much beyond our human thinking, but what we can do is love him with all that we have. Let us ask Him to give us the grace to Love HIm with all that we have, with all our heart, mind and strength. Luv 'n prayers Mona, Mangalore. Hi Joynetters, My mother always told me that I should always try and go the second mile because most people go the first mile and its the second mile that makes the difference. My parents have ben married for the past 21 years and i suppose the novelty of marriage has long worn off. So my father generally leaves getting my mother a B'thday present to our discretion( that is me and my two sisters). So the three of us sit and plan things out .But when the three of us get going we have a slight volume problem .So finally everyone, including my mother and except my father knows what he is giving my mother for her B'thday. Though my mother never lets us know that she knows what is coming her way and pretends absolute ignorance. But this time for her B' thday my father, to all our surprise and to my mothers delight, got her a saree on his own.i mean he had gone and taken the trouble to choose a saree for her.It was wonderful because he had gone the second mile. I suppose all of us do go that second mile to show that we care with our friends . But most of the time , it is with the people for whom we care the most and the people who care the most fo us that we forget the second mile. There is nothing particularly great in taking your mother to the hospital when she is sick, or taking on more than your share of the load when someone is sick or tired... most people would do that. But its when u go that second mile to tell them through your actions and words that u love them that it makes a diference. M y mother rang me up yesterday. I was surprised since she had rung me up the day before and it was unual for her to call me again the very next day.But she told me that she was thinking about me and just fell like talking to meI always knew my mother loved me, but i felt great about that call---it made my day. The vintage rule( the longer stored ,the better the brew) , dosen't exactly apply to love u know. So why keep all that love for the people u care for corked up in your heart. Go the second mile today to show someone u care for, that u love them . It will make their day .. and trust me .. it will make yours too.
