November 4, 2002 St. Charles Borromeo (1538-1584) The name of St. Charles Borromeo is associated with reform. He lived during the time of the Protestant Reformation, and had a hand in the reform of the whole Church during the final years of the Council of Trent. LIFE: St.Charles born on 2 october 1538 at Aron in Italy.Although he belonged to a noble Milanese family and was related to the powerful Medici family, he desired to devote himself to the Church. When his uncle, Cardinal de Medici, was elected pope in 1559 as Pius IV, he made Charles cardinal-deacon and administrator of the Archdiocese of Milan while he was still a layman and a young student. Because of his intellectual qualities he was entrusted with several important offices connected with the Vatican and later appointed secretary of state with full charge of the administration of the papal states. The untimely death of his elder brother brought Charles to a definite decision to be ordained a priest, despite relatives' insistence that he marry. He was ordained a priest at the age of 25, and soon afterward he was consecrated bishop of Milan. Charles had encouraged the pope to renew the Council in 1562 after it had been suspended 10 years before. Working behind the scenes, St. Charles deserves the credit for keeping the Council in session when at several points it was on the verge of breaking up. He took upon himself the task of the entire correspondence during the final phase. The reform needed in every phase of Catholic life among both clergy and laity . If the people were to be converted to a better life, these had to be the first to give a good example and renew their apostolic spirit.He reformed 3,000 clergy,founded endowedseminaries,lay catechists,in remote village heinstituted new parishesmonasteries,won innumerable souls. Charles took the initiative in giving good example. He allotted most of his income to charity, forbade himself all luxury and imposed severe penances upon himself. He sacrificed wealth, high honors, esteem and influence to become poor. During the plague and famine of 1576 he tried to feed 60,000 to 70,000 people daily. To do this he borrowed large sums of money that required years to repay. When the civil authorities fled at the height of the plague, he stayed in the city, where he ministered to the sick and the dying, helping those in want. Work and the heavy burdens of his high office began to affect his health. He died at the age of 46.,was canonized in1610. PATRONAGE: bishops,catechists,catechumens,seminarians,spiritual directors,spiritual leaders,stomachcolic intestinal diseases and ulcers. [JOYnet] our experience
Dear Friends, We would like to share the beautiful experience that we had when we attended a couples retreat last week at SVD retreat house in Kaduthuruthy Kerala. It was a really divine experience for both of us.We were able to see in a deeper sense the presence of Christ in each other and everyone else around us. The objective of the retreat was 'HOW YOU CAN MAKE YOUR HOME A HEAVEN'. We learnt a lot of new things in this retreat - The importance of accepting your partner as he/she is, the value and meaning of suffering in the life of a christian, how to accept suffering, and accepting the lordship of Christ in the life of your life partner. Our love for each other has really grown as a result of this retreat and we thank and praise God who gave us the blessing of attending the retreat. We pray that God may bless the married couples in Joynet and give them a similar chance to attend the couples retreat at SVD in future. Praise the Lord Very interesting scripture that brings inner healing. The moment we accept that our enemy is satan and not human beings then we start fighting against our enemy that is satan and not against human beings. 1 PETER 5:8 also throws light on this when it says YOUR ENEMY THE DEVIL IS ROAMING AROUND LIKE A ROARING LION TRYING TO DEVOUR WHO EVER COMES HIS WAY. So it is clear that our enemy is the devil. We started to talk about the stress in the families and I noticed one young man dropping his head and eventually the focus of attention was on reconciliation in the families. At one point, interestingly enough one of the youngsters stated My home is a purgatory and for him purgatory means a temporary hell. For him Lucifer is his Dad and mom is the counterpart of Lucifer. This young man and all the youngsters except one or two mentioned that they themselves are the little devils in that temporary hell. It was sad to be conscious that their parents are the devils. For the youngsters they and parents are the devils.. We may sit back and argue for arguments sake that they could be wrong but real life situation for these youngsters was the awareness of themselves not as the beautiful creation of God. They forgot that God created the human beings to resemble God. God said now let us make human beings they will be like us and resemble us - Gen.1.26. The youth in New Zealand experience temporary hell situation in their families. Often we think that our parents and our enemies are devils and we start fighting them. We are ready to annihilate each other. But the real enemy is not us. It is the wicked spiritual forces. We are not fighting against human beings but against wicked spiritual forces. Ep.6.11. Often times we think the enemy is my family member. Hence we fight tooth and nail to destroy the others. I have seen children fighting their parents for various reasons or even annihilating them. Cain did the same. He felt jealous. Jealousy is a gift of the devil and Satan hid that very cunningly and deceived Cain. Cain felt angry at his own brother and destroyed Abel. Cain ! turned on his brother and killed him Gen 4:8. The real enemy was evil that took over Cain. Satan is a liar. He even called God a liar. When Eve, reasoned out with Satan in her struggle to obey God, Satan said God is a liar and convinced Eve to work against God. Eve said God told us not to eat of that tree. If we did we will die Gen3.3 and Satan stated That is not true Gen 3.4. This Satan is out there looking for us to trap us to sin against one another so that we might fight each other and annihilate one other. In this fight against the evil forces, we may fail if we dont put our proper spiritual armors. There are six pieces in this spiritual armor to be used in the fight against the evil. Truth as the belt, righteousness as the breastplate, readiness to announce the Good News as the shoes, Faith as the shield, salvation as the helmet and Word of God is the sword which the spirit gives. Pray on every occasion as the Spirit leads.Eph.6.14-18. The fight against evil is a constant warfare. But we need the Holy Spirit to illumine our hearts so we will know the real enemy. The real enemy is Satan not our brothers and sisters. No need to destroy our erring brothers and sisters. Pray for them so that they will be ! delivered from the clutches of the Evil one. Jesus himself prayed for us sinners. I do not ask you to take them from this world. Keep them safe from the evil one John 17.15 We need to pray for our parents, brothers and sisters, spouses, children, friends, priests, religious, government officials, communicators so they may not transmit evil messages, teachers, office mates and everyone who might be considered as evil doers or our enemies. Hai all, A few days back I saw in the newspaper that a young couple committed suicide, in Kollam Dt. The victims were an upcoming young Architect of 26 yrs and his wife (23 yrs) and seems to be financially sound, employed parents and moreover Christians (in name at least). I read it again and again and couldnt find any reason for them to suicide, from the description given in the paper. This made me to think who I am. A Christian? A Christian means one who is in Christ. 1Jn 2:6 says One who is said to be in Christ shall walk in the same path Christ has walked. (The quoted text may not be the same, as I do not have a bible in English with me.) In Jn 11:21, Martha, the sister of Lazarus and Mary said to Jesus, If you would have been here, my brother might have not died. The parents/brothers/sisters/children of several such above mentioned victims may be crying out Lord if you would have been here .. Now we are here as Christians and are supposed to walk through the path that Jesus led. Then why these type of suicides are happening around us. Cant we do something? Or whether we have decided it as somebody else responsibility? Of course each one of us have our own Personal Mission. But still is something missing? Can we really be called as Christians? Check out how busy u r With whom... B U S Y ? Satan called a worldwide convention of demons. In his opening address he said, We can't keep Christians from going to church. We can't keep them from reading their Bibles and knowing the truth. We can't even keep them from forming an intimate relationship with their Savior. Once they gain that connection with Jesus, our power over them is broken. So let them go to their churches; let them have their covered dish dinners, But steal their time, so they don't have time to develop a relationship with Jesus Christ. This is what I want you to do said the devil: Distract them from gaining hold of their Savior and maintaining that vital connection throughout their day! How shall we do this? his demons shouted. Keep them busy in the nonessentials of life and invent innumerable Schemes to occupy their minds, he answered. Tempt them to spend, spend, spend, and borrow, borrow, borrow. Persuade the wives to go to work for long hours and the husbands to work 6-7 days each week, 10-12 hours a day, so they can afford their empty lifestyles. Keep them from spending time with their children. As their families fragment, soon, their homes will offer no escape from the pressures of work! Over-stimulate their minds so that they cannot hear that still, small voice. Entice them to play the radio or cassette player whenever they drive. To keep the TV, VCR, CDs and their PCs going constantly in their home and see to it that every store and restaurant in the world plays non-biblical music constantly. This will jam their minds and break that union with Christ. Fill the coffee tables with magazines and newspapers. Pound their minds with partying, fun frolic, with the news 24 hours a day. Invade their driving moments with billboards. Flood their mailboxes with junk mail, mail order catalogs, sweepstakes, and every kind of newsletter and promotional offering free products, services and false hopes. Keep skinny, beautiful models on the magazines and TV so their husbands will believe that outward beauty is what's important, and they'll become dissatisfied with their wives. Keep the wives too tired to love their husbands at night. Give them headaches too! If they don't give their husbands the love they need, they will begin to look elsewhere. That will fragment their families quickly! Give them Santa Claus to distract them from teaching their children the real meaning of Christmas. Give them an Easter bunny so they won't talk about his resurrection and power over sin and death. Even in their recreation, let them be excessive. Have them return from their recreation exhausted. Keep them too busy to go out in nature and reflect on God's creation. Send them to amusement parks, sporting events, plays, concerts, and Movies instead. Keep them busy, busy, busy! And when they meet for spiritual fellowship, involve them in gossip and small talk so that they leave with troubled consciences. Crowd their lives with so many good causes they have no time to seek Power from Jesus. Soon they will be working in their own strength, sacrificing their health and family for the good of the cause. It will work! It will work! It was quite a plan! The demons went eagerly to their assignments causing Christians everywhere to get more busy and more rushed, going here and there. Having little time for their God or their families. Having no time to tell others about the power of Jesus to change lives. I guess the question is, has the devil been successful at his scheme? You be the judge! Does BUSY mean this in your Life B-eing U-nder S-atan's Y-oke? Or Being Under SAVIOURS Yoke It is not enough to think, now is the time to act. I have identified what keeps me under Satans yoke, have you? May you have the courage to act what your inner voice tells you. God Loves you... Have a Blessed day with Christ..
