[JOYnet] The "W" in Christmas

2002-12-16 Thread Ravi Vaz
Hi Joynetters,

This is a mail I would like to share with you. I dont know if it is truth or fiction ,
but it teaches us that " God Can Write Straight Even On Crooked Lines."

Love and Prayers

Ravi

The "W" in Christmas

Each December, I vowed to make Christmas a calm and peaceful experience.
I had cut back on nonessential obligations -- extensive card writing, endless baking,
decorating, and even overspending. Yet still, I found myself exhausted, unable to
appreciate the precious family moments, and of course, the true meaning of Christmas.

My son, Nicholas, was in kindergarten that year. It was an exciting season for a six
year old. For weeks, he'd been memorizing songs for his school's "Winter Pageant." I
didn't have the heart to tell him I'd be working the night of the production.
Unwilling to miss his shining moment, I spoke with
his teacher. She assured me there'd be a dress rehearsal the morning of the
presentation. All parents unable to attend that evening were welcome to come then.
Fortunately, Nicholas seemed happy with the compromise.
So, the morning of the dress rehearsal, I filed in ten minutes early, found a spot on
the cafeteria floor and sat down. Around the room, I saw several other parents quietly
scampering to their seats. As I waited, the students were led into the room. Each
class, accompanied by their teacher, sat cross-legged on the floor. Then, each group,
one by one, rose to perform their song.

Because the public school system had long stopped referring to the holiday as
"Christmas," I didn't expect anything other than fun, commercial entertainment --
songs of reindeer, Santa Claus, snowflakes and good cheer. So, when my son's class
rose to sing, "Christmas Love," I was slightly taken aback by its bold title.

Nicholas was aglow, as were all of his classmates, adorned in fuzzy mittens, red
sweaters, and bright snowcaps upon their heads. Those in the front row-center stage --
held up large letters, one by one, to spell out the title of the song. As the class
would sing "C is for Christmas," a child would hold up the letter C. Then, "H is for
Happy," and on and on, until each child holding up his portion had presented the
complete message, "Christmas Love."

The performance was going smoothly, until suddenly, we noticed her; a small, quiet,
girl in the front row holding the letter "M" upside down totally unaware her letter
"M" appeared as a "W." The audience of 1st through 6th graders snickered at this
little one's mistake. But she had no idea they were laughing at her, so she stood
tall, proudly holding her "W."

Although many teachers tried to shush the children, the laughter continued until the
last letter was raised, and we all saw it together. A hush came over the audience and
eyes began to widen. In that instant, we understood the reason we were there, why we
celebrated the holiday in the first place, why even in the chaos, there was a purpose
for our festivities.

For when the last letter was held high, the message read loud and clear:
"CHRISTWAS LOVE" And, I believe, He still is.

[JOYnet] The man i love-A christmas case study

2002-12-16 Thread anita sara dsouza
Dear friends,
On this time of the year when we are all preparing to receive jesus in our hearts, I
felt it was best to make a case study of a person in history who not only came to
prepare the way for the Lord, but also left behind an example for each of us. Please
forgive the length of this mail.
JOHN THE BAPTIST:

Introduction:

Born to a priest named Zechariah, and his wife Elizabeth, both belonging to the
priestly families, in their old age, John was a perfect example of Gods divine plan
for mankind.
>From the very time of the announcement of his birth (Lk 1:5.) Gods plan for his
>life was made very clear; or then, perhaps, the announcement came much earlier; at
>the time of Isiah, the prophet (Is 40:3), where not just the coming of our Lord Jesus
>was made clear, but also the coming of a messenger ahead of him to make clear the
>way of the Lord. John was a person , filled with the fullness of the Holy Spirit,
>right from the time of his birth (Lk 1:17), and perhaps that is why, He leapt with
>Joy when he first had a womb to womb meeting with Jesus.(During Marys visit to
>Elizabeth in Lk 1:39-45.)

Johns Appearance:
Johns clothes were made of camels hair; He wore a leather belt round his waist, and
his food was locusts and wild honeyMt 3:4
He fasted and drank no wine Mt 11:18.
His clothes, just like his personality resembled to that of Elijah the prophet,
(2Kings 1:8) thus causing an confusion as to his identity.
In the book of JoHN when questions were asked by the authorities regarding his
identity, He quoted Isiah when he said; I am the voice of someone shouting in the
desert: Make a straight path for the Lord to travel!
And yet, when Jesus began his work on earth He defined John with yet another identity
when He said,
I assure you that John the Baptist is greater than any man who has ever lived. But
He who is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than John Mt11:11
John was like a lamp, burning and shining Jn 5:35.
Now, now..didnt Jesus also tell us to be the lamps of the earth..

[JOYnet] the man i love-continued

2002-12-16 Thread anita sara dsouza
...CONTINUED

Johns Ministry:
(1) Preaching:
John went throughout the whole territory of River Jordan preaching,
Turn away from your sins, and be baptized, and God will forgive your sins Lk3:3.
In many different ways, John preached the good news to the people and urged them to
change their ways Lk 3:18
So by preaching the word of God, He first preared the way for the Lord.
(2) Helped others prepare the way of God in their lives:
When more and more people were drawn towards him and his teaching, they began asking
him as to what they were required to do for which he told them to share their
belongings with each other, he told the tax collectors not not collect more than what
was legal, and to soldiers, not to use force over people or to accuse them falsely.Lk
3:10-14.
(I wonder what he would have told us, if we were in there too? Would he ask us to be
sincere in our tithes, to help each other, to back away from all means of corruption
including giving and taking of bribes and not to judge others.specially now that we
are preparing for Christmas? Remember! He had come to prepare a way for the Lord)
(3) Baptism:
He baptized not just the people from Jerusalem, from the whole province of Judea and
from all over the country, (Mt 3:5-6) but he was also privileged enough to be able to
baptize our saviour Jesus Christ(Lk 3;21).
(4)He glorified not Himself, but Jesus alone:
when people began to raise hopes, and began to wonder whether he was the Messiah; He
humbly replied I baptize you with water, but someone is coming who is much greater
than I am,I am not good enough to even untie his sandals. He will baptize you with
Holy Spirit and fire. Lk 3:15-16.
Later, being born of human flesh with all its tendencies, he had all the opportunity
to feel jealous of Jesus, when Jesus himself also started baptizing people and more
crowd was moving towards Jesus, after, he had come in first in this buiness of
baptizing. But He was a man of definite identity, He did not need an identity of
being someone greater than
ctually was. He was at his heights of humility when he told his disciples,
The bridegroom is the one to whom the bride belongs, but the bridegrooms friend, who
stands by and listens, is glad when he hears his voice. This is how my own happiness
is made more complete. He must become more important while I become less important,
Jn 3:26,29-30.
(5)He introduced Jesus to mankind:
The next day of Jesus baptism, when he saw Jesus coming from a distance He boldly
testified, There is the lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world, and then
by the word of His testimony, he clarified their minds regarding Jesus as being the
son of God.( Jn 1:29-34)
JOHN, THE OUTSPOKEN MAN LANDS IN PRISON:
John reprimanded Herod, the governor, because he had married herodias, his brothers
wife, and had done many other evil things. Then, Herod did an even worse thing by
putting John in prison Lk 3:18-20
AGAIN THE DOUBTING JOHN
When John the Baptist was in prison, and heard about Jesus, he was again a little
doubtful and wanted to settle things straight, and perhaps that is why, he sent his
messengers to Jesus asking him who he was. But Jesus gave them a perfect reply,
Tell John what you are seeing and hearing; the blind can see and the lame can walk;
those who suffer from dreaded skin diseases are made clean, the deaf hear and the dead
are brought back to life, and the goodnews is preached to the poor. How happy are
those who have no doubts about me. Mt 11:2-6.
..was John really convinced and satisfied with this answer?
Perhaps yes! And why not, for with this answer, he had fulfilled the prophesies made
by Isiah long ago(Is 61:1) and then, it was with these very words that Jesus had first
started his public ministry.
THE DEATH OF JOHN THE BAPTIST:

It was very unfortunate though on the day of Herods birth, he had to order for an
death sentence for John the Baptist, being stuck with a promise made to his daughter
in public. He was beheaded and his head was brought in a dish and given to the
daughter who in turn ha
over to her mother.(Mt 14:6-12)
Thus, the man, a messenger, a prophet, the greatest of men o n earth met with his
tragic end, but only after having fulfilled the purpose of his birth.
love,
anita, kuwait

[JOYnet] Lifting Up The Hearts & Voice To The Lord At A Time

2002-12-16 Thread sajeev alex
Dear Friends,

As suggested by Calvin sitting together at a particular time, Why can’t
we carry on the same mode once or twice a month for at least ten minutes
by sitting together and praying to our Loving Lord Jesus for a particular
cause?

By this course (Gift for Our Child Jesus), we can know when most of them
will be available or we can change the timing later on.  It’s only a
suggestion, give your opinion & suggestions.

With love & prayers

RE: [JOYnet] Gift for Baby Jesus

2002-12-16 Thread Neovet
Dear friends in Jesus,

I would suggest that let us be focussed on one single intention on December
20th.
We can select another day for intentions like rivalry etc.

What will be the time for global prayer? and what about draft of the
prayer?

Regards in Infant Jesus

[JOYnet] The History of Christmas Celebrations

2002-12-16 Thread Jason :)
Dear JYs

I received a very interesting sharing on Christmas which I am putting across.
Incase ur view differ do let me know.

===

The Tradition of Christmas
By Denis Mueller

During this holiday season you may stop to wonder if Christmas was always like
this? Was it always filled with such crude commercialism? The answer is no.
Then how did our traditions come about? What are its roots? How did we get
here?

After the death of Jesus, Christianity was spread throughout the Roman Empire.
To do this the Christians had to challenge the culture of Caesar. So the
Christians began to use versions of Roman holidays. One of the biggest of the
Roman celebrations was winter solstice. They also sought to compete with
Caesar's image as the savior of the world.

This celebration occurred during the time that we now call Christmas. There is
no biblical basis for Christmas but the Christians were competing with the
Romans for the souls of the empire's subjects. This holiday became a good way
to conquer by culture what they could never do militarily. The move allowed
the Christians to take over a pagan holiday ritual and transform it into a
holiday of their own.

It became a huge celebration and by the time of the 17th century it was filled
with excess and carnival behavior. The celebration became an attack on
established power. All authority was challenged. The Puritans feared it so
much that Christmas was banned from 1659 to 1681. The atmosphere of aggressive
begging and the robbing of wealthy were a direct attacks on the structured
society that most people saw themselves a part of.

As the United States became more urbanized the rowdiness of Christmas only
increased. Now, the emerging middle classes sought to create their own myths
about Christmas. They sought to displace this class-based version of Christmas
and replace
it with a more domestically orientated Christmas. They sought to change it
from a public, politically-based meaning to a spiritualized celebration. To do
this it became a more family oriented affair.

Gifts were now exchanged between families and when things were given to the
poor it took on a whole new meaning. The act of giving came now to be seen as
an act of charity. This was aided with the invention of Santa Claus. The
invention of Mr. Claus created a consumer feast. Now the season became a
capitalist dream and the whole temper of Christmas was changed forever. No
longer was it seen as a challenge to authority but now authority was held up
within the context of hierarchy and wealth.

But history forces us to look at what was Christmas at first. It was the birth
of a poor child to a poor mother. For Mary there is no room at the inn. She is
outside of society. But her child has a profound impact on history and his
message of justice and peace causes the political hierarchy to kill him. Jesus
was a victim of capital punishment. I hope next Christmas we remember this
story.

[JOYnet] Gift for Baby Jesus

2002-12-16 Thread Prejomy Jose
Dear friends,

It is really a good thought that Calvin put forward. In addition to that I
would like to suggest one more thing. The rivalry between the factions among
our christian faith.

Everyday we are watching the incidents happening in Kerala among our
christian brothers. In view of an outsider, they are only Christians; not
Catholic or Orthodox or Protestent. This is ridiculous for us, Christians.

So, could we add this also to our fasting prayer. Or shall we make it on
another day?

Dear friends,

wanted to share this nice, inspiring story that I happened to come across ...tells us
how God does have our desires at the back of his mind or rather at the top of his
mind! and he would fullfill all our needs as lavishly as only he can do it...just have
to trust in him.. however impossible and hopeless situations in life may seemcheck
out...

Love & Prayers,

[JOYnet] x'mas gift -story

2002-12-16 Thread Reshma
We were the only family with children in the restaurant.

I sat Erik in a high chair and noticed everyone was quietly
eating and talking.

Suddenly, Erik squealed with glee and said, "Hi there."
He pounded his fat baby hands on the high chair tray. His eyes
were crinkled in laughter and his mouth was bared in a toothless
grin as he wriggled and giggled with merriment.

I looked around and saw the source of his merriment.
It was a man whose pants were baggy with a zipper at half-mast
and his toes poked out of would-be shoes. His shirt was dirty
and his hair was uncombed and unwashed. His whiskers were too
short to be called a beard and his nose was so varicose it
looked like a road map. We were too far from him to smell, but
I was sure he smelled.

His hands waved and flapped on loose wrists. "Hi ya, buster,"
the man said to Erik. My husband and I exchanged looks,
"What do we do?" Erik continued to laugh and answer, "Hi, hi
there."

Everyone in the restaurant noticed and looked at us and then at
the man. The old geezer was creating a nuisance with my
beautiful baby. Our meal came and the man began shouting from
across the room, "Do ya patty cake? Do you know peek-a-boo?
Hey, look, he knows peek-a-boo."

Nobody thought the old man was cute. He was obviously drunk.
My husband and I were embarrassed. We ate in silence, all
except for Erik, who was running through his repertoire for the
admiring skid row bum, who in turn, reciprocated with his cute
comments.

We finally got through the meal and headed for the door.
My husband went to pay the check and told me to meet him in the
parking lot.

The old man sat poised between me and the door.

"Lord, just let me out of here before he speaks to me or Erik,"
I prayed.

As I drew closer to the man, I turned my back trying to sidestep
him and avoid any air he might be breathing. As I did, Erik
leaned over my arm, reaching with both arms in a baby's
"pick-me-up" position.

Before I could stop him, Erik had propelled himself from my arms
to the man's. Suddenly a very old smelly man and a very young
baby consummated their love relationship. Erik in an act of
total trust, love, and submission laid his tiny head upon the
man's ragged shoulder.

The man's eyes closed, and I saw tears hover beneath his lashes.
His aged hands full of grime, pain, and hard labor, cradled my
baby's bottom and stroked his back. No two beings have ever
loved so deeply for so short a time. I stood awestruck.

The old man rocked and cradled Erik in his arms and his eyes
opened and set squarely on mine. He said in a firm commanding
voice,

"You take care of this baby."

Somehow I managed, "I will," from a throat that contained a
stone. He pried Erik from his chest unwillingly, longingly,
as though he were in pain.

I received my baby, and the man said, "God bless you, ma'am,
you've given me my Christmas gift."

I said nothing more than a muttered thanks.
With Erik in my arms, I ran for the car.

My husband was wondering why I was crying and holding Erik so
tightly and why I was saying, "My God, my God, forgive me."

I had just witnessed Christ's love shown through the innocence
of a tiny child who saw no sin, who made no judgment; a child
who saw a soul, and a mother who saw a suit of clothes.

I was a Christian who was blind, holding a child who was not.

I felt it was God asking, "Are you willing to share your son for
a moment?" when He shared His for all eternity.

The ragged old man unwittingly, had reminded me, "To enter the
Kingdom of God, we must become as little children."
