Re: [JOYnet] Tithing - whom should I give ?
Dear Bros and Sis, I agree with Wilson that there are a lot of really poor people out there who needs our help. We need to identify such families, orphanages, evangelical groups who are really starving for funds. Would like to also add the point that the money we squeeze out for the Lord out of acute shortage is more valued than what we give from our abundance. Remember how Jesus complimented the two copper coins donated by the widow. I remember when I was going through a really hard time a priest asked for some help for a poor woman to build her house. I requested for some more time. I asked the Lord for direction and the Lord asked me to give an amount. After a few months I went to meet Fr. Varkey at Koluthuvayal Retreat Center and there a sister while praying told "Sanju, Jesus liked the way you helped the woman for her house." Another point I would like to add is that we need to forget what we gave for the Lord. We should not keep account for the money we had given, as it is the Lord who keeps account. Each time we give we can offer that giving with an intention for the conversion of a soul, to overcome a particular sin in our life , for the souls in purgatory etc. All these are points which will be considered after our death on the day of Judgement. Help given for real poor people with the intention of one's family cleansing is more powerful than the masses offered for the departed souls in purgatory and also for the entire family tree healing and deliverance. Lord values the way you help feeding / clothing the slum children and He appreciates this. Another area of giving is our own spiritual gifts. Why should God bless us with Spiritual gifts ? It is to be used for building His Kingdom. Ephesians (4 : 10 - 14)The one who descended is also the one who ascended far above all the heavens, that he might fill all things. And he gave some as apostles, others as prophets, others as evangelists, others as pastors and teachers, to equip the holy ones for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ, until we all attain to the unity of faith and knowledge of the Son of God, to mature manhood, to the extent of the full stature of Christ, so that we may no longer be infants, tossed by waves and swept along by every wind of teaching arising from human trickery, from their cunning in the interests of deceitful scheming. So everytime you share something to the Joynet; you are tithing your spiritual gifts. And the promise is that you will receive back 100 fold. Re: [JOYnet] Tithing - whom should I give ?
Dear Thankful Netters, Thank you wilson for bringing out that practical suggestion - It is very important to support our neighbourhood activities. Also I feel one way to say "Thankyou" to the JY's is to give a portion of the tithing regularly to the JY. To add on to what Dr.Jomon wrote about the deficit JY has here in Kerala -it is much more than what he wrote. Also the financial scene of the National Team and the International Team is even worse. I'm sure this is the same with our folks in UAE/Singapore/UK and so on... From our earlier discussions ,I feel all are well convinced that 10%(Minimum) tithe has to be there BESIDES the amount to be set apart for charity works. What we have been suggesting to the JY's here is to put in atleast 5% of the tithe to the central level JY and ofcourse a part of the rest should be given to the local JY setup. Meanwhile the regional level must contribute to the National level and...the National levels must contribute to the International Team...What say Manoj Chettan?? From my opinion if the Co-ordinators of JY(International/National/Regional - all levels) are free from the burden of raising finance - they will do much more for the Kingdom of God than what is happening in the present day. During this Thanking season - How about calling up our co-ordinators/elders/pastors/animators and telling them "Thankyou for what you are doing in our lives - for setting apart so much... for our spiritual growth ". I am sure they will appreciate that. Thankyou. Regards n prayers Berly Earnest/cochin/India --- Wilson Thomas <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > Friends in Christ, > > 2 months before Fr. Friends in Christ, 2 months before Fr. Sebastian Vechookaroottu visited Singapore. He is the director of Penuel and Emmanuel Ashrams (Home for abandoned mental patience and drug addicts) in Thampalakkadu. Some of them asked him the same question Berly asked. "Whom should I give?". Hope you can also find something from his answer. Every place in Kerala have at least one orphanage or charity organization. Just locate one or two near your home town and help them. If every one help like this all these organization in Kerala will not have financial problem. Currently what happens is all the money is going to some very famous evangelization centers and they are becoming rich while most others suffering for their daily bread. So, give a fixed portion of your share for your hometown and the rest for others Praise the Lord Wilson Thomas Singapore - Original Message - From: "Berly Earnest" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Sent: Friday, January 31, 2003 4:50 PM Subject: [JOYnet] Tithing - whom should I give ? > Dear Enthusiastic Netters, > > I too would like to add few more things on tithing. > In our prayer group - there is one chettan who has > been supporting us with his tithing since past few > months(more than a year). Re: [JOYnet] Tithing - whom should I give ?
keep apart the amount [tieth] in a separate box so that God can use it for His flock. we jesusyouth must use that for j/y activities, for helping poor personally especially to somebody who can never give that back and also to help somebody to avoid a suicide and also for Emmaus expence. I came to know that Emmaus is running Rs. 1/- short isn't it? dr jomon, angamaly ---Original Message--- From: Berly Earnest Date: Friday, January 31, 2003 14:20:55 To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: [JOYnet] Tithing - whom should I give ? Dear Enthusiastic Netters, I too would like to add few more things on tithing. In our prayer group - there is one chettan who has been supporting us with his tithing since past few months(more than a year). What I learnt from him was that over the past so many years..he was giving his tithe.. Most of the time he used to put it in the box placed outside the church,Rest he used to wait for people to come and ask him(very rarely). Once when there was money short for one of our programs ,I happenend to ask him for some support and he gave cheerfully. Now he does give regularly a part of his tithing to our JY activities here. I am sure there are many around us ,who knows and does give tithe. But where exactly money has to be given ?? It'll be nice if many more can comment on this. Can we arrive at a norm (ofcourse finally ,its upto each individual to do what one feels right) or few guidelines/hints which will be helpful for us to decide where to give the tithing. regards and prayers Berly Earnest/cochin/India Yahoo! Re: [JOYnet] Tithing!!
Hi JYs. The topic on Tithin is really a refreshing one. Dr. Sindhu i do remember a similar discussion held.. I do remember that there were two sets of people... One set of people who felt that.. since it is God who gives us. why should we give it back to him. God has given for our use...The other ... set of people.. felt that... since it is God who gives us. everything is rightfully his so even 10% seems less... While it was difficult to resolve the first set of people.. the second set of people. felt it was a joy to give.. then a survey was taken among the two sets.. and what was found to be surprising was that most ... of the people in the first set. were people who..earned a relativley high payscale.. and the people in the second set were people who... earned a relatively low payscale..were basically the ordinary working class.. However I have noticed one thing... that when people talk about Tithe they only think in regard of giving 10% of their earnings to God... I remember during one of the retreat at Divine, it was specifically that not only 10% of our salary but atleast 10% of our time as well should be given to God. hmmm now let me see.. how many of us can spend 2.4 hrs with God out of 24 hrs in a day. 10% of our lives dedicated to the lords work... that makes 36.5 days a year.. gosh i remember the discussion some of us youth had after the talk when we had to break up for tea. many of them had already resigned to their faith that spending 2.4 hrs a day doing gods work or even 36.5 days was impossible. Then when some of us had gone to the Brother who had given the talk.. he told us how simple it was he said if we went for mass daily.. read the bible daily... said the rosary daily.. and said our personal prayers we can make up. 2.4 hrs a day ... Then we asked him how do we spend 36.5 days in a year with the lord he said there are atleast 52 Sundays in a year out of 52 Sundays cant we atleast spend 37 totally with him doing his will. Wot is 37 sundays as compared to 313 weekdays where we spend time on our jobs , entertainments etc. I remember a retreat which I had gone for at Kalyan and the Rev. Father incharge there was giving an example on Tithing which went like this: After one of my talks on tithing, a young man came up to me with a problem. He told me "Father when I was earning a salary of Rs. 1000 I used to regularly give a tithe of Rs. 100. Then I got a promotion and very soon another promotion and now my salary is Rs. 10,000. Now Father if I am to give tithe it will come to Rs. 1000/- my god... that is a big amount. Please pray Father that God may work something out". So I prayed for that young man and I prayed like this "Oh Heavenly Father you have been so kind enough on my brother here. However he is in a bit of bother. You see. when he was earning Rs. 1000/- he was in a position to give you 10% of his earning as Tithe. However, now look at him ... after you have blessed him with a bigger salary he is finding it difficult to pay you 10% and it is making him sad. Hence please make his salary Rs. 1000/- again." . hehe... it seems... the man got up with a shock.. and. he asked Father Mathew for forgiveness. However, what affects me on Tithing is that there are some parishes that I have come to know about where the Parish Priest has actually gone door to door... demanding Tithe from the parishners... I do believe giving Tithe depends solely on an individual... even though it is required by our faith. In this regard I need your views.do correct me if i am wrong in some aspects :) urs in faith Jason, Mumbai - Original Message - From: Shimmy J.
