[jQuery] Re: Testing IE6 and IE7 with Virtual PC

2007-08-22 Thread Dekortage

Safari on Windows is a beta version 3. Most Mac users still use
Safari 2, the stable release version included with current versions of
Mac OS X (the 10.4.x family). Even the Mac version of Safari 3 is
still in beta, due to be shipped with OS X 10.5.

Just make sure you are comparing apples to apples (no pun intended)
when finding Safari differences between operating systems. I wouldn't
expect Safari to have identical results between Mac and Windows until
OS X 10.5 is released and gains some market share (thus spreading
Safari 3 across the Mac community).

My first thought was to bash the mac and start war, but I think I want to
keep things civil :)

Im really beginning to hate MS IE, and VISTA.
They couldn't just include the rendering engine of IE6 somewhere.
And for crying out loud, why dont they for once complay with standards
instead of invent new ones.

Safari on Windows and Safari on Mac are two different beasts. I found
this out the hard way; what was working on Windows, didn't necessarily
work on a Mac. :(

I have a png fix on http://neurosesgalore.com/ for the background and I know
it works in IE6, but when I load it in the stand alone, it fails.

Thanks for the linux specs, that is going to help.

I haven't noticed any issues with Active-X / filters *yet*. IE6 .PNG
alpha-transparency filter loading via active-x appears to work as normal. I
haven't toyed much with active-x enabled applications however... If you have
anything for me to try, please let me know.

Brice,
I've notice some odd issues with using ie6 running along side ie7, activeX
issues and filter issues. Have you notice those issues with Multiple IE?

What distro are you using for linux?

Bernd,

Thanks for the above. It's nice to see Microsoft giving out these VPC
images for application compatibility. It's too bad that you have to run IE6,
and IE7 in separate instances though (for your hardware at least... ;) ).
Personally I've been using VMware Server (free) running Windows 2003 under a
*nix environment to test applications/websites in the browsers. Needless to
say, I was psyched to see Safari on Windows as I don't need to worry about
buying a Mac anymore.

  An example of all browsers running can be seen @ ;
https://bricecubed.wikidot.com/local--files/start/WebDevelopersWetDream.png

I use Trendsoft's MultipleIEs to quickly get multiple versions of IE (5-7)
running;
http://tredosoft.com/Multiple_IE

As an alternative -- If you don't have the Windows licensing and run Linux
you may be interested in IEs4Linux;
http://www.tatanka.com.br/

IEs4Linux runs under WINE (Free, Windows *not* required), although IMO
it's not the perfect solution as you'll probably want debugging via the IE
developer toolbar and the Microsoft script debugger -- which I was never
able to get to run properly under IEs4Linux.

Another alternative for running a Linux environment from Windows is
the Free (GPL'd) qemu tool (http://fabrice.bellard.free.fr/qemu/),
which runs under Linux, Mac OS/X, Windows, and OpenSolaris (and
probably others). You can find several pre-configured Linux images for
qemu on my web site:

http://wanderinghorse.net/computing/qemu/

Simply download an image and open it with qemu and you're all set. You
may need to install Apache and whatnot, but for some images (e.g.
Debian) that is trivial as long as the qemu network emulation is
working (it normally does).

:D
