Re: Should the controller be a JSP or a servlet ?

2001-11-30 Thread sasi

Hi ,
it can be a servlet or jsp?My openion is better go for servlet.becoz in jsp
implicit objects are created due to these objects performence will some how
decreased .
one more thing being a controller it will consists more of logic than
presentation that means we have code it java.its good and better put java
code in servlet than putting it in JSP.

Re: QUESTION ON APACHE / TOMCAT

2001-11-30 Thread S.Jyotinarayan

If Tomcat 4.0 is running on a system called COMP1
with a project named PROJ1, we would run the project in the following manner
right?
http://COMP1:8080/PROJ1/index.htm

Instead of having the above as the address, could I
have something like http://mydomain/PROJ1/index.htm

Thanks a lot in advance

Subject: Re: QUESTION ON APACHE /
  TOMCAT

Sorry, but thats
incorrect.

Tomcat is a servlet engine, also referred to as a
servlet container. This means that it is an application server which serves
up your jsp/servlets.

Tomcat also has its own webserver integrated which
runs by default on port 8080 for tomcat 3X and (I think) 8081 for tomcat 4X.
You can change the port to 80 with version 3 or 4 but I think with 3 you
need to run Tomcat as root.

The only reason you'd need to use tomcat with
apache is if your site has a lot of static files ( straight html and images)
since apache will serve this content marginally faster. Also, if your site
includes some perl say, you might want to use apache for its perl support,
and hook it up to Tomcat for your jsp/servlets.

If
your webapp is mainly dynamic jsp pages/servlets and you dont need perl or
php support theres no need to use apache _and_ Tomcat, Tomcat can do
everyhting you need on its own.

Hope this helps

paul

No,

With Tomcat you
just get the servlet engine. This needs to be integrated with Apache, use
mod_jk and also update the conf file, instructions for the integration are
on Suns Web Site.

Hello
All,

I just have a small question
about the apache web server and tomcat. When I downlaod and install Tomcat,
what am I really getting? Is it the apache web server enhanced with the
Tomcat container or is Tomcat a different web server all
together?

If I already have an Apache web
server already installed, how do I add the functionality provided by
Tomcat?

Thanks,

Re: Virus Alert!!!

2001-11-30 Thread Eric Fleming

I just finished reading all about it.
Even if you don't open the attachment, it'll attempt to infect your system.
It can do this by having "preview window" mode on (I always have this turned
off on my PCs)
and if you double-click the mail to open it up in its own window.

It'll not only infect your address book (an mail others the virus) but will
also install
a trojan (backdoor) on your system which allows capture of keystrokes, IP &
other personal info.

You
may also need to delete the compiled version in the WORK folder under your

Re: Servlet refresh

2001-11-30 Thread Chris Tucker

If at first something like that doesn't work for me, I tend to stop Tomcat,
erase the offending servlet, copy the new version in again, and restart.
However, it sounds like you've probably already done this. The next thing I
would try is to just make absolutely sure the browser isn't serving you a
cached copy. The best way to test this is to telnet to your HTTP server:

telnet servername 80
GET /absolute/url/to/servlet HTTP/1.1
Host: localhost

(make sure you hit return twice after the Host: line). The response you get
in the telnet window will be exactly what the server is sending.

If you get the "new" version response from that command, then it's the
browser at fault; otherwise, it's Tomcat.

Hi chris,
I am trying to use the telnet as per your advice.
When you say "servername". I am using the "localhost"
On the command prompt  I type "telnet localhost : 80"
when I do this, I get a blank screen.  I then have to enter twice before I see some HTML data.
Am I doing right here?

Re: Servlet refresh

2001-11-30 Thread Chris Tucker

To telnet to it you should issue the command:
telnet 65.71.103.122 8080

When it's connected, type in:
GET /path/to/your/servlet HTTP/1.1
Host: localhost

You didn't say where your servlet was located, so I don't know what path to
use: when you test it, simply replace the "/path/to/your/servlet" part of
the HTTP request with the actual path to your servlet. Also, if you're on
Windows 9x, the telnet client is a bit crappy. You won't see a "local echo"
of what you type unless you explicitly set that option: the characters you
type will go through, you just won't see anything until you hit
after typing in the host line.

When I tried it out I got the standard Tomcat "welcome" page on /, so Tomcat
seems to be working OK. One thing it might be worth checking, if you're
accessing the machine on the web rather than directly, is if there is an
intermediate proxy server or caching server that may have cached an old copy
of the content and be serving that instead. Most web caches are pretty
intelligent with regards to this stuff now, but problems can still occur.

Re: Servlet refresh

2001-11-30 Thread Chris Tucker

At the moment your form submission is going to localhost:8080, not
65.71.103.122:8080 -- I assume these two IP's are the same machine for you?
If you want it to be testable by people on the list, you'll need to fix up
your form submission to go to the 'net IP, not localhost.

Re: Servlet refresh

2001-11-30 Thread Chris Tucker
Title: RE: Servlet refresh

Yeah, the HTTP
server won't write anything to the display until the headers are sent for the
client.  When you're telnetting in, you're effectively opening a raw-text
socket to the server.  You can then explicitly type in the HTTP headers
that you want sent, and when you hit twice, you get the
response.  The HTTP protocol describes exactly how a well-formed HTTP
header must be created: you just have to manually create it by typing in the
right values.  Take a look at the HTTP/1.1 RFC over at www.ietf.org for the full specification of what
is and is not allowed.

Hi chris, I am trying to use the
telnet as per your advice. When you say "servername".
I am using the "localhost" On the command prompt
  I type "telnet localhost : 80"  when I do this, I
get a blank screen.  I then have to enter twice before I see some HTML
data. Am I doing right here?

If at first something like that doesn't work for me, I tend to
stop Tomcat, erase the offending servlet, copy the new
version in again, and restart. However, it sounds like
you've probably already done this.  The next thing I would try is to just make absolutely sure the browser isn't serving you
a cached copy.  The best way to test this is to
  telnet to your HTTP server:
  telnet servername 80 GET
  /absolute/url/to/servlet HTTP/1.1 Host:
  localhost
(make sure you hit return twice after the Host: line).
The response you get in the telnet window will be
exactly what the server is sending.
If you get the "new" version response from that command, then
it's the browser at fault; otherwise, it's
  Tomcat.

Re: Servlet refresh

2001-11-30 Thread Ketharinath Kamalanathan

I got it fixed. The problem was with the browser itself.

I was cleaning the catch with the TomCat server Running. It did not work.

This time, I stopped the server and then cleaned the cache and restarted the
server. It went thru.

By the way, is there any work around so that one does not need to restart
the server often for servlet changes???

Thanks guys.

Include non-existing page result in different behavior with tomcat and resin

2001-11-30 Thread Ron van Pol

Hi there!

I was just wondering what is considered to be correct
behavior. I’m including a jsp from a servlet (see codesnip below). Now,
sometimes the included jsp does not exist. I was under the impression that a
ServletException was to be thrown in these cases. This seems to be correct with
tomcat 4.0.1. Later, I switched to resin-2.0.0 and to my surprise resin
didn’t raise an exception but instead served the error page that I
specified in my web.xml for http 404 errors.

Now, what is considered to be correct behavior? I’ve
checked the specifications but I can’t find anything to indicate the
correct behavior.

…

try {  RequestDispatcher rd = request.getRequestDispatcher(aURL);  rd.include(request, response);} catch (Exception se) {    CAT.debug("ServletException: " + se);}…

…

404

/404.jsp

…

In tomcat 4.0.1 the catch block is reached and the debugging
code is executed. Seems to me that the included request does not go through
tomcat like a regular request. If it was, tomcat should have redirected the
include request to the error page as specified in web.xml.

In resin 2.0.0 the catch block is NOT reached. In this case
the request seems to go through resin like a regular request, resulting a resin
picking up the error page as specified in web.xml.
