No, it should be
" flush="true" />

The flush="true" was missing making it invalid.

I got burned on this one.

Re: How to get the parameters passed to included jsp file?

2000-11-03 Thread Hernandez, Rey

Think of included JSP files as being part of the file the include command is
in. If you want the included file to see something, like a string, just
make the String declaration before the include command and then use that
variable in the included file.

Example.

Test1.jsp:
...
<%
String username = "Rey";
String editable = "ok";
%>

...

Test.jsp:
...
username = <%= username %>
editable = <%= editable %>
...

But I don't know how I can get the parameters in the Test.jsp included. I
tried to use the statement

  String User_Name = request.getParameter("username");

  and User_Name is null.

I also tried to use the variable username directly in the Test.jsp, it say
it is an undefined varaible. Now how can I retrieve the value of the vaiable
userename passed so that I can use it in the file Test.jsp included?
Any help will be greately appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Re: Deploying multiple version of an application within the same servlet engine?

2000-10-31 Thread Hernandez, Rey

I would think you would just need to use request.getServletContext() for all
URL generation. Then your app would be totally independent of context and
you should be able to move between them all easily.

So,

Is there anybody that uses different "contexts" for
test/production/development?

If so how do you manage your url generation?

It seem to me that you can bind an application to a context but you'll
have to be sure that all urls generated reference that context.

How do people tackle the problem of installing multiple versions of their
application within the same application server?

MessageDigest and the database

2000-10-27 Thread Hernandez, Rey

Hi all,

How are people using the MessageDigest object to encrypt values before
sending them to the database?

Maybe I'm using it in the wrong way, but I am trying to do something
like this:

Get a value from the user, across SSL, like a password.
Encrypt that password with MessageDigest(using MD5).
Put the resulting byte array into the database.

I can't seem to find a way to get a byte array into the database, Oracle
in this case. I figured I could use a NUMBER datatype, but then how do you
convert a byte array to a java datatype that you can use with one of the
setXXX functions provided with PreparedStatement that will go into a NUMBER?

Hope I didn't confuse everyone with this question, I'd be happy to clarify.

Thanks in advance,
Rey

Re: I get "Out of environment space"

2000-10-26 Thread Hernandez, Rey

I am not saying that people shouldn't ask questions about setting up
servers, especially if they are having a difficult time with it. What I am
saying is people should read the available documentation before asking the
list for help. A lot of questions have been asked that could have been
answered by a quick scan through the readmes available with tomcat, or
WebLogic or whatever. If someone has a seemingly unique problem with
setting up their own server, then the list should be asked. If someone has
a problem and the question they ask is word for word in the readme, I don't
believe this should be on this list.

Maybe I am way off in my expectations for this list. What do the list
moderators have to say?

The server setting problem n all are related in a way since he or she is
setting up the server for running JSPs , and since everyone in this list
has tackled the problem at one time or the other they
are the best ones to give the proper solution.

Just as a tip, it was mentioned earlier, but I feel it should be mentioned
and STRESSED. This list, I hope, is for us to resolve issues that we find
with JavaServer Pages after we have exhausted all other avenues of help.
For example, the tutorials on java.sun.com, the help files that come with
whatever server we all might be using, the readme files (as illustrated
below), and the plain old javadoc documents, worlds of info about everything
we need to use.

This list shouldn't be used to clarify syntactical problems, compile
problems when it is obvious there are syntactical or spelling errors, and
problems with the server we use, especially problems as simple as getting
the servers to work.

I don't mean to be rude or scolding, but I don't want my email to overflow
with simple messages that I end up deleting anyway. This list is useful if
we use it correctly.

Please refer to documentation, tutorials, manuals and so on to fix problems
yourself. Turn to the list when you are just plain baffled by a problem and
you need a new pair of eyes to look something over. You will learn more, we
will learn from each other and everyone will be happier with the quality of
help that is on this list.

Thanks for reading, I'm sorry that I had to write all of this, but I felt it
was necessary. Any spam regarding this email should be sent to me, don't
clutter up the list.

Out of Environment Space error message
On Windows 95/98 systems, you may see an "Out of Environment Space" error
message when starting the server. This happens if Windows provides too small
a space for environment variables. To work around this limitation:
Close the DOS window (the error can corrupt its CLASSPATH variable).
Open a new DOS window.
Click on the MS-DOS icon at the top left of the window.
Select the Properties option.
Click on the Memory tab.
Adjust the "Initial Environment" drop-down box from "Auto" to "2816".
Click OK.
Start the server.

Hi,

I have a property file (a text file) that I'd like to load it in run time
from a servlet. I hard coded the path and the file name in a java file, and
my servlet basically gets it from the bean. The problem is that it is not
finding it. I'm using Tomcat at the moment, but this may change later. What
is the best way to load a text file in run time? Where should I place the
file? Should I use JNDI to do this? I'd like to hear how others are doing
it. Thanks!

Re: Simple JSP Program

2000-10-24 Thread Hernandez, Rey

I would suggest 2 things. Check your server log to see what the problem
was.

I can see at least one problem with your code, make sure you keep case the
same for all variables, specifically numTimes is declared differently than
it is used.

Subject: Simple JSP Program

Hello friends,
I have a very typical program.
I wrote a small jsp programme with the following code
(SimpleJSP.jsp) and placed it in public_html in Java Web Server(2.0)

*
<%@ page language="java" %>

Simple JSP Example

<% int numTimes =
Integer.parseInt(request.getParameter("numtimes"));
for(int i=0;i
Hello, world!
<%
}
%>

<%@ include file="PageFooter.html" %>

*
I wrote a simple html file to get the input.
The code is as follows (file name is SimpleJSP.html)

Simple JSP Example

How many times?

*
And i am calling the html file as
http://machinename:8080/SimpleJSP.html

Once i get the page, i give some number in the text box and submit it,
It gives the following error:
HTTP 500 Internal Server Error (This page cannot be displayed).

Where i am wrong.
Please suggest some solution.
Thanking you in advance.
B.Rao

Re: off-topic: Thumbnail Generator

2000-10-24 Thread Hernandez, Rey

You should be able to use the Java Graphics API to do this.

Subject: off-topic: Thumbnail Generator

Dear all,

I'm currently developing an online catalog using JSP. People can upload
images of any sizes to our catalog. I need a program which my jsp can call
to generate a thumbnail out of the uploaded images(jpg or gif). Would
appreciate it if you can point me to where I can get this component. I've
come across some freeware but they have GUI. I need the API. Thanks much.

kim.

Re: problem with ....

2000-10-16 Thread Hernandez, Rey

Is this a bean you were using, recompiled it, and then tried to use it
again?
I'm not familiar with how WebLogic does things, but tomcat requires you
restart the server for the recompiled bean to be recognized again.
