Re: [JPP-Devel] Zip, delete items and menus discussions

2012-01-23 Thread Uwe Dalluege
Hi Giuseppe,

thank you for your very interesting suggestions.

In the past we could change the manuals *after* the official
release was provided because the nightbuild could change every day.
I agree that we need a deadline not to change menues or functionality
to have time for changing the manuals too.

But I think we should fix bugs in the official version too and not only
in the nightbuilds.
If there is a bug in the official version and it its fixed why
can we not update the official version (with a new build-number)?
So the official version would be always bug-free.

New features should be for a new release in the nightbuild.

What do you think?

Regards

Uwe

Here is a brief listing of technologies which could help for writing
documentation
Not exhaustive, not tested (except docbook, a long time ago), just worth
a look
before moving to something new.

Any experience ?

Formats :
- reStructuredText (text)
- AsciiDoc (text)
- docbook (xml)
- dita (xml)
- elml (xml)
- odf (xml)

Tools
- docutils (python), sphinx (python) : rst -> html, pdf (via latex)
- docbook tools (xslt) docbook -> html, pdf, javahelp...
- xmlmind (java) docbook, dita -> html, pdf... (personal edition has
limited features)
- elml : elml -> html, pdf, docbook, odf...
- libreoffice

Translation

I agree with you Michaël. A good and stable release should always take
precedence over new features. In the meantime I can look for a good OS X
solution. So that the poor Apple users with only one mousebutton can
work ;-) And second should for the 1.6 release remain some new features :-D

Just my 2 cents

 Hi,

today I've commited and activated a new zoom pan tool. Please test and
comment it. If the tool makes Problems you can simply comment out line
 1320 in the JUMPConfiguration class.
 Here are the features:
 - left click zooms in
 - right click zooms out
 - left/middle/right drag is pan
 - with wheel you can zoom in/out and set the new visible area
 - hints and scale are displayed in the statusbar.

As you can see on the toolbar icon, this tool connects the zoom and pan
tool to one nice tool. The main reason for that tool was, that the user
can faster navigate and especially can see/select the new zoomed area.
This feature should be known as "Area of interest". So the user only
need one tool for zooming/paning. During "wheelmode" you can pan too.
Please tell me your opinion. I can imagine me to replace the two zoom
and pan tools in the future by this tool. Translaters are welcome.
Why the name "SuperZoomPanTool"? Because i need a class name and had no
 other idea :-D

 regards

 Matthias

Re: [JPP-Devel] Difference between right click Clone items and replicate-selected-items?

2012-01-23 Thread Michaël Michaud

Hi,
I can see the advantage in clone and move. I think that this tool is
most useful when digitising and adding new features into that same
layer. Replicate features is clearly made for copying features from
one layer into another. That's also what I have been using it. Perhaps
we will want to have them both, even it is hard to guess the
difference between clone and replicate. But mayby only the Clone tool
needs to be on the right click menu and replicate could be only
available from the Edit menu?

Agree with that.
Have you developers discovered that both these tools (clone and
replicate) seem to be happy with pasting features also
into non-editable layers?

Didn't notice, you're right, this is incorrect.

Note that probabily Replicate Item tool has the same behaviour (I

*Oggetto:* [JPP-Devel] Difference between right click Clone items
and replicate-selected-items?

Hi,

There are two tools in the right click menu which seem to almost
the same thing. Clone items does not ask anything, it just clones.
Are there other meaningful differences.

I notices that if I have selected items from many layers the Clone
items is cloning them all into one of the selected layers. It
seems to be usually the layer that is highest on the layer legend
but not always. Because the behaviour is not easy to predict,
would it be better to make this tool usable only if user has
exactly one editable layer selected?

I like it, but I think it can wait after 1.5.1 release so that we can
concentrate on reliability of 1.5.1 release.

Nevertheless, If there are more votes to include it I can change my mind.

I think we must freeze everything but fixes relative to installation
process or language files.
I still have some remarks on windows batch (see my next mail), and I'm
waiting for a
complement for czech language file.
If you have more time the week-end, as I do, we can decide to release on
sunday.
In the meanwhile, I think we should test as much as possible and commit
carefully.

Does it fit your schedule ?

[JPP-Devel] Zip, delete items and menus discussions

2012-01-23 Thread Giuseppe Aruta
Hi all,
I am very busy in these days with my job so excuse me if I do a cumulative
answer.

I think we should leave all things as they are for OJ 1..5.1 without modifying
anything.
But we can leave a general common discussion and open a page for an up-to-come
version of OJ (1.6? 2?) where we can define all the radical and non radical
modifications of menus and plugins.

The points.

1) As Uwe pointed it's hard to modify manuals if we have a software that is
modified every version (modified in a better way, I say). That's why I gave up
on upgrading the on-line manual/list of tool.

On the other hand OpenJUMP evolves and we need to change. It is probably time
to migrate to ELML/docbook or similar that make things more easy and fast to do.

2) To come close to academic needs, we can define a specific official version
of OpenJUMP not only when all modifications are approved by the community but
also when a basic manual, at least for Uwe's lessons, is prepared. Better if
before September (the beginning of academic lessons, I believe). For instance:
 - we can freeze to add plugins or make modifications in February 2013 for the
official realize (1.6)

 - on this time we modify the manual for 1.6
 - the official realize can  happen between August and September
 - of coarse only corrections of bugs will be allowed between February and
September.
On the same hand a the programming process goes on a 1.7 NB (to come on 2014 or
2015). The only problem will be that people who correct bugs between Feb and
Sept hve to make corrections on both lineages (1.6 up-to-come-official and 1.7
NB)

Now the other points, possibly under point 2, if approved.

3) I think that the zip discussion can be included into Larry Baker's proposal
to add to OJ SkyJUMP tool that saves also the project file into the zip folder.

4) I don't use a lot delete all layer items tool. When I was studying OJ and
made may Frankenstein OpenJUMP Jufre I also realized the rescue to have this
tool close to other like toggle visibility. I would vote to hide it

5) I think we should improve menu descriptions, using icons but also changing
names. I worked more with Kosmo SAIG and I found it very easy to use and very
flexible, also because everything is well described and easy to understand,
even for newbies in GIS. As Stefan pointed out, being so far away from OJ
community, probably helped to see things in a different way. Let us leave open
the discussion.

6) +1 to group Buffer tools under a submenu.

regards and excuse me for a long mail

sounds good to me. although the user interaction should also include a
possibility to ignore the file.

if you work on it please i suggest to do it locally and submit your change
after february the 4th. we should finnish the release 1.5.1 during the course
of this week.

So we can ignore XML files in a zip file, or if we detect one, ask the
user if it is a GML file.

2012-01-23 Thread Rahkonen Jukka
Hi,

Despite ESRI is a non-negligible factor in the GIS world I do not consider that
problem with ESRI .xml metadata files is so big. As far as I know they are only
generated by ESRI software. Shapefiles from other sources can be opened from
zip file without problem. So I would rather keep the feature as it is than to
remove it. Of course even better if it could be fixed.

Re: [JPP-Devel] Tool for correcting topology of a polygon layer

2012-01-23 Thread Landon Blake
Jukka.

If we don't have this functionality, let's talk. It would be useful to
me and I could code a plug-in. If this functionality isn't already in
JTS, I bet DR JTS would be interested in our implementation.

Re: [JPP-Devel] Problem with opening zipped shapefiles

2012-01-23 Thread Landon Blake
So we've got two choices. (1) Remove support for opening zip files.
(2) Fix OJ's zip file support.

You can put anything in a zip file, so the idea of opening a zip file
directly seems a little odd to me. We need to teach jump to look for
and import only supported files from a zip and to ignore the
unsupported files.

I'm willing to peek at this problem this week. What do Michael,
Stefan, Ede, Peppe, Jukka, Uwe, etc. think about the two (2) options?

Jukka,

I believe we definitely should not be copying features to layers that
are not editable.

Can you fill out a feature request for this?

Thanks.

2012-01-23 Thread edgar . soldin
hi all,

for the curious the exe wrapped izpack installer can now be downloaded and
tested form the sf.net snapshot area
http://sourceforge.net/projects/jump-pilot/files/OpenJUMP_snapshots/

as a bonus it complains when it can't find java and open's java download page
in browser (most of the time ;).

Re: [JPP-Devel] Difference between right click Clone items and replicate-selected-items?

2012-01-23 Thread Rahkonen Jukka
Hi,

I can see the advantage in clone and move. I think that this tool is most
useful when digitising and adding new features into that same layer. Replicate
features is clearly made for copying features from one layer into another.
That's also what I have been using it. Perhaps we will want to have them both,
even it is hard to guess the difference between clone and replicate. But mayby
only the Clone tool needs to be on the right click menu and replicate could be
only available from the Edit menu?

Have you developers discovered that both these tools (clone and replicate) seem
to be happy with pasting features also into non-editable layers?

Regarding your second question, I will try to find a solution. Note that

replicate-selected-items?

Hi,

There are two tools in the right click menu which seem to almost the same
thing. Clone items does not ask anything, it just clones. Are there other
meaningful differences.

I notices that if I have selected items from many layers the Clone items is
cloning them all into one of the selected layers. It seems to be usually the
layer that is highest on the layer legend but not always. Because the behaviour
is not easy to predict, would it be better to make this tool usable only if
user has exactly one editable layer selected?

depends on the stability of it i'd say.. if it is good enough in, if not out

we freeze a revision by beginning of february. i suggest michael as lead
maintainer tells me and i simply manually run the build process. this is also
because i have a shell scripted repacking routine which sets correct file
permissions for the zip distros.

generally everybody should be able to do so in a checked out svn core/trunk

mvn package -P release,javadoc,installer -D version.number=X.X.X

should result in ( oj_release is OpenJUMP--r-(CORE|PLUS) )
target/apidocs/oj_release
target/oj_release_(CORE,PLUS).zip
target/izpack/Install_oj_release_(CORE,PLUS).(jar,exe)

Re: [JPP-Devel] Renaming functions and moving menu positions - need for guidelines?

2012-01-23 Thread Uwe Dalluege
Hi,

at 2011.05.16 we had a discussion about changing menues
(see below).
My opinion again is to use names from OGC.

http://www.opengeospatial.org/standards/sfa

Please do not change every OJ version the menues!
Because it is hard work for the users to find them
and it is hard to update a tutorial.

Regards

Uwe (The academic teacher) :-)

 > old mail:

Hi Michaël,

thank you for your answer

The problem with one/two layer is, that
the Geometry Functions works with one and with two layers.
So maybe it is better to avoid splitting in one/two layer.

Maybe you have the old OpenJUMP version 1.2F.
There you find the whole Analysis functions under Tools>Analysis>...

But you are right. This is my opinion. Please ask the
other users what they think about this.

Thank you for your help.

Regards

Uwe

Re: [JPP-Devel] Difference between right click Clone items and replicate-selected-items?

2012-01-23 Thread Giuseppe Aruta
Jukka,
clone items not only duplicate items but also set the copies on editing mode
and opens move-item tool: it allows users to clone and move objects on the
workbench with only one click - the regular duplicate item doesn't have these
capabilities. It has some possible  usages, cloning object used for point
simbology or duplicate buildings which have the same shape. I rather use more
this Clone Tool for my maps than the regular Duplicate one - but this is my
point of view, more than this I made that tool.
Regarding your second question, I will try to find a solution. Note that
probabily Replicate Item tool has the same behaviour (I will give a test, too)

Oggetto: [JPP-Devel] Difference between right click Clone items and
replicate-selected-items?

Re: [JPP-Devel] New zoom pan tool

2012-01-23 Thread edgar . soldin
the mighty mouse has 4 buttons. 2 at the side, 2 at the top. if you click on
the right top you have a right click. for osx you can enable right clicking
systemwide in the systempanel/mouse.

but even without this change a java application should consider the rightclick
as such if you just don't push down the whole shell but only the front right
part of it.

The other difference is that the object remains selected* and the move
feature action is activated so that it is very easy to move the feature.

Note : The "source" feature is selected and the cloned one is not. You
realize this if you clone it in another layer and move it. I think this
should be changed.

The target layer is probably predictable, but I agree thet would be more
safe to only copy if one editable layer is selected.
I would not be surprised that your remark apply to other plugins.

Would you write a feature request in case we can not fix that very quicly ?

With this driver you can read and write PostgreSQL/PostGIS tables with OpenJUMP.

If this plugIn is in the OpenJUMP plugIn-directory lib/ext ,
you can read tables with :

and write tables with :

Attention! Please use only lower case column names!

You can choose between "New Table", "Overwrite"" and "Insert" mode:

- New Table

If the table does not exist, it will created.
If the table does exist, it will deleted and created.

- Overwrite

If the table does not exist, it will created.
If the table does exist, only the data will deleted (not the whole table)

If the table does exist, only the rows with the same unique column-value

- create a new table (managing insert in geometry column table)
- update a table using a primary key

TODO (Michaël)

The plugin is partially redundant with core OpenJUMP PostGIS features
Would be useful
- to use core OpenJUMP connection facilities
- to use core OpenJUMP data types mapping facilities
- to add the plugin update/insert feature to OpenJUMP
- to add an option to create an index on feature id and/or on geometry column

RELEASE (Michaël)

Last release is named 1.5.0 as it is synchronized with OpenJUMP 1.5.x
(but it is compatible but previous releases).
Eric upgraded the build system to maven, and used a maven for ant plugin
I just came back to a plain ant build file called build-mm.xml for 1.5.0 release

Re: [JPP-Devel] Renaming functions and moving menu positions - need for guidelines?

2012-01-23 Thread Rahkonen Jukka
Hi,

Do I remember right or was there some academic teacher with the discussion back
then? And the reason for changing some naming and grouping was aiming to better
match with some OGC document?

I feel it is confusing to have slightly different names for about similar but
not exactly same operations in ESRI world, OGC definitions etc.
Union/merge/dissolve is one example that comes to my mind. It may be impossible
to find an uniform names for everything. Some little example images about
source layers before operation and after that would be nice to have available
when selecting the tools and why not a lexicon telling what terms other popular
softwares are using for the equivalent operation.

I also hope that the menus would not changed very often.

[JPP-Devel] Tool for correcting topology of a polygon layer

2012-01-23 Thread Rahkonen Jukka
Hi,

I received a polygon dataset that in not in perfect order. I should make a
uniform polygon coverage but sometimes the vertices of adjacent polygons does
not match exactly. Sometimes also one polygon has more vertices than the
neighbour polygon in the common boundary. Do we already have these tools?

- Compare vertices of neighbouring polygons and adjust the coordinates to
common value it they are inside a given tolerance distance
- Add new vertises to boundary from the neigbouring polygon if the counterpart
is missing
- Check overlaps and micropolygons and report them

[JPP-Devel] Difference between right click Clone items and replicate-selected-items?

2012-01-23 Thread Rahkonen Jukka

Re: [JPP-Devel] Enhancement of raster support: proposed developments

2012-01-23 Thread Alberto De Luca - GeA
Stefan,

ok, I believe I managed to check out a copy of the source code from SVN
and set up a NetBeans project (awesome!).

With regards to your questions: we could definitely check if OpenJUMP
works with the new Sextante releases. I have to say though that I don't
know much about the Framework you ported from Sextante. But anyway I
don't see why we shouldn't take the time to check if there is something
new to be ported to it. The classes involved are the ones contained
inside the package org.openjump.core.rasterimage.sextante?

 Hey Stefan and Michael,

thank you for your enthusiasm and trust! Indeed I am still working on
AdB-ToolBox, and a new version is expected in the next few months, with
 new tools for hydraulics analysis.

My sourceforge account name is bertazza. Looking forth to start
submitting some new raster functions! By the way, have you got any
particular guideline before I start committing code to sourceforge?

 Thanks guys
 Alberto
