[JPP-Devel] Maps made using Open JUMP

2013-05-13 Thread Andrei Nacu
Hi all,

I want to share my latest maps made with Open JUMP.
They can also be found on Wikimedia Commons.

A general map of the Roman Empire in AD 125, with physical background:
Full size map
link address

And the political version:
Full size map
link address

Regarding the creation of the maps, I find Open JUMP to be the most
vector-friendly open source GIS software. The preparation of the datasets
(rivers, lakes, sea, roads, borders) was really piece of cake, especially after
the 2 bugs regarding 'Merge features' and the fill closed area tool were
solved. The offset curve command was very useful for making administrative
boundaries parallel with water courses. I'm also thankful that Geoffrey Roy has
added a scaling option for Printer svg outputs. There's no need for any further
rescaling in Inkscape now.

Of course the maps were not entirely made with Open JUMP. The shaded relief was
made in GRASS and improved in GIMP, since Sextante-shaded relief is not as
powerful (and you can only use it for ASCII files, and not for DEM's). And the
legend and curved labels were made in Inkscape. Actually, I chose to write all
the labels in Inkscape, since text is transformed to paths when the map is
exported from Open JUMP. Because of this, no further text edits (like making
curved labels, changing size and fonts) can be made.

Overall, I'm satisfied with the latest version of Open JUMP. Of course, there
are some minor style options which could be added (like more px steps for line
widths; e.g. 0.5, 1, 1.5, 2 and so on). And a curved labels option would be
nice as well. But I'm not sure if these are really needed. OJ is more focused
on elegant vector editing and analysis, not on map layouts. If I remember, even
ArcGIS10 made clumsy curved labels, so in the end you always have to use a
vector graphics editor to polish your maps.

Regards,
Andrei--

Hi Andrei,

Fantastic! Your maps are truly inspiring. Thanks for sharing your work.

Inkscape is a wonderful tool. It also has unequaled capabilities to edit
PDF. In my limited experience using it, PDF import seems to have a higher
fidelity translator than SVG. Have you tried it? Text comes in as text.

Summary: Exception while sorting attribute table

Initial Comment:
With java 1.7, when I sort an attribute table by clicking on a string column
header, I sometime get an exception with the message
Comparison method violates its general contract!.
I think this is related to the new TimSort algorithm of java 1.7 which is more
strict than java 1.6 concerning comparator implementation.
I can tell that sometimes, the problem could be eliminated by deleting rows
containing null or empty values, but I cannot create a repeatable test case yet.

[JPP-Devel] [ jump-pilot-Bugs-3613236 ] Shortcut for rotate tool

2013-05-13 Thread SourceForge . net
Bugs item #3613236, was opened at 2013-05-13 15:18

Category: OpenJUMP - Toolbox and Buttons
Group: None
Status: Open
Resolution: None
Priority: 3
Private: No
Submitted By: michael michaud (michaudm)
Assigned to: Nobody/Anonymous (nobody)
Summary: Shortcut for rotate tool

Initial Comment:
Sometimes the cursor takes the shape of the rotate tool without clicking on the
rotate tool.
I tried to repeat this problem that has been reported to me and noticed a
strange
behaviour of the R shortcut :
with zoom tool, it changes the cursor to rotate tool until the key is released
with pan tool (or select) it changes the cursor to rotate permanently
with zoom in/out, wheel, pan it changes the cursor to rotate until the next
mouse action.

 dbquery.query.info http://dbquery.query.info

The parameters are in the { } braces, and the code will fill

I just need the part outside the braces translated. Thanks!

Re: [JPP-Devel] SEXTANTE forks ?

2013-05-13 Thread Stefan Steiniger
Hola Jose (CC jpp-dev),

I am reading this email below late and have now a question.
Where should I/we watch out for Sextante changes (e.g. an 1.1 release?).
I.e. what/where is the repository now and where will releases be published.

I ask, because I am with the OpenJUMP team, and as you may know,
Sextante is part of OpenJUMPs PLUS edition.

saludos,
stefan

Am 24.03.13 04:33, schrieb José Antonio Canalejo Alonso:
No, it ins't a fork. Just to clarify, the original java source code of
SEXTANTE has been transfered (in coordination with the original creator
of SEXTANTE) to the gvSIG Community Edition (CE) repository NOT to the
official gvSIG repository [1]. gvSIG CE is a fork of gvSIG made in 2011.
In SEXTANTE there are now two versions: one in python managed by the
QGIS community, one in java managed by the gvSIG CE project. Both
versions are well coordinated with the original SEXTANTE project team.
QGIS and gvSIG CE have been the projects with more activity behind
SEXTANTE since its creator announced that the development of SEXTANTE
could not continue as a full-time work.
 Best regards
 Jose

   Hi All -

I am reading a blog post today on planet.osgeo.org about SEXTANTE
moving to python, while the original code will be part of gvSIG now..
plus some new improvements.. A classical fork it appears..

I imagine the Live will host gvSIG and so continue to benefit from
that branch.. But it raises the question, what to do with the new
   python SEXTANTE ?

  no rush, but interesting development

   --
   Brian M Hamlin

The new python Sextante is in the QGIS plugin, which I think we're
already shipping. It's not a classic fork in my understanding because
one of the key authors is the same for both variants. Although it's
actually possible that the python version may become the primary one
 and
wrapped by java in gvSIG rather than being maintained in java.

So, I don't think there's anything else to do about it for us.

 Thanks,
 Alex
