it can be harmful
And Ede's Change coordinate system tool, Anyhow right now I don't see
any difference on using OpenJUMP tools (whether or not depending on

Another issue I saw on Os geo discussion is the dependency with JAI
and related libraries. We don't have this problem, I think.

I don't think OpenJUMP needs native dll installed by the jai installer.
But I don't understand if Oracle doesn't allow OS to be shipped with
their jre machine or they don't allow also programs to be shipped with
jre. This not a problem with OpenJUMp but becomes a very big one with
other java gis like GvSIG or Kosmo.

Let's see. The good new is that JDK seems to be better every year.

Hi,

I think there is a change in the Oracle JVM licence which is the reason
why osgeo people want to migrate to OpenJDK
Here is what Cameron Shorter, the project leader, says :

"As per email thread below, the OSGeo-Live project is looking for
guidance on what we should do regarding a migration to OpenJDK.

The brief facts:
* Sun Java is not allowed to be packaged into future distributions (like
ubuntu, debian, or OSGeo-Live). Instead, users are expected to download
SunJava from Sun.
* SunJava 7 will be based upon OpenJDK.
* OpenJDK is reportedly much better than previous OpenJDK versions.

For OSGeo-Live:
* OSGeo-Live v5.5 (released in March 2012) will be based upon the older
Xubuntu 10.04, so at a pinch, we can still use Sun java, (but won't be
able to accept security updates). For OSGeo-Live v6.0 (Sept 2012), we
intend to use Xubuntu 12.04, and hence will only be able to use OpenJDK.
* OSGeo-Live is space limited, and we strongly prefer to only include
one flavour of java, otherwise we need to remove some of our windows
installers.

So bottom line is that java applications which wish to be included in
Linux distributions will need to support OpenJDK soon, and this is
coming to a head as we package OSGeo-Live.

Questions for Geotools developers:
1. Do geotools based applications work on OpenJDK now?
2. Is it possible to migrate geotools based applications to OpenJDK?
3. Can such migration happen before Feb 2012 (for OSGeo-Live 5.5)?

We can help with testing packaged applications, but are looking for
guidance from projects on where we should be focusing our energy."

geotools is a quite big suite and i expect especially native libraries to be
not as stable as on oracle jdk. anyway the cts extension should work
flawlessly, but that's of no urgent priority as it will not be shipped on osgeo
anyway.

the libs we ship are under the license mention in ther readme and allow
redistribution. faster binary jai libs are a different matter.

i am not even sure that the jre redistribution of gvsig and co was legal at any
time, because the old "Operating System Distributor License for Java" was
targeted at os distributors, not program dirstributors. anyway here is some
more background on the retiring the old DLJ

Ede, Peppe, Matthias and linux users,

Do you monitor live-d...@lists.osgeo.org list ?

There are discussions on which jvm will be included in the osgeo-live dvd
Seems that they want to check that all included softwares are compatible
with OpenJDK.

Anyhow, if you notice any problem related to a particular jvm

I think it can be reported (or accessible from) here
