Summary: File dialog item for all supported files is too long

Initial Comment:
in Java 1.6 the file dialog seems to adapt according to the drop down list of
file types.
As there are many supported file types :) - the file dialog is bigger than the
screen.
This happend on Windows 7.
It seems that this also happens on Ubuntu.

Summary: Noder : Split lines should also split already noded lines

Initial Comment:
In the new Noder (supposed to replace the previous node-line plugin), Split
Line option only splits non noded lines.
If lines are already noded and split option is selected, lines which intersect
each other should also be splitted.

Would be nice to have a button in edit toolbox to create the smallest polygon
around a mouse click using visible (or selected) features as its boundary.
Options could be :
- use all visible / use selected only
- create a polygon / create a polygon without hole

Summary: Removing Layer while Attribute Table opened can freeze OJ

Initial Comment:
Load a layer with some attributes.
Create several layers with Edit > Extract > Create a layer by attribute value
Open the attribute table of one of the new layers
Remove the corresponding layer from LayerNamePanel
Change editability from the attribute panel.
You get an exception, and the UI starts freezing.

Stangely, I cannot reproduce the same sequence from new layers created from
right click (I get the exception, but the UI does not freeze in this case).

Solution.
When a layer is removed from LayerNamePanel, I think one must check if an
attibute panel or an info panel refers to this layer.
If true, the user should be asked to abandon the removal, or to close all the
JInternalFrame refering to this layer.

Ede, this is a nice idea I had not considered.
I'm closed to a solution following my idea, but I will spend some time to
explore yours.
I think that a event-listener approach wouldn't be as interactive (no
question to the user, but automatic close of all dependencies), but this is
not a show-stopper.
If it's cleaner, it definitely is worthwhile.

As this is quite an annoying bug, maybe I'll commit my solution soon and
come back to discuss a better solution with you after.

Fixed in svn 2585 :
Makes RemoveSelectedLayer more consistent and fix bug 3469215
  Now, a LayerEventType.REMOVED is listened by :
  - ViewAttributesPlugIn.ViewAttributesFrame which is also removed
  - InfoFrame which removes data from this layer from the model
  - LayerViewPanel which removes this layer renderer

Message:
Currently, the RemoveSelectedLayers plugin call the LayerManager dispose
method.
If the method fire a remove event (doesnt know if it already exists)
and if the AttributePanel listen to this event,
I can see how a dialog box can prevent the AttributePanel to be closed,
but I can't see how I will prevent the dispose method to finish its work
and remove the layer from the LayerNamePanel...
That said, I agree with you, we don't need this confirmation box.

Message:
of course can the Attribute showing plugin, when notified of a layer
deletion fire up a yes/no box. no problem there.

but i guess by deleting a layer the user will definitely not expect the
attributes anymore so i see no point for any dialog there.

Initial Comment:
email by Jukka on jpp devel list (8 Jan 2012):

We do not have a working WFS at the moment. The deegree plugin works only with
deegree WFS servers or perhaps not at all and it seems to be unmaintained. It
is a pity because for a short period OpenJUMP was the best WFS client of all.
At the moment I would recommend Kosmo for read-only WFS and QGis for WFS-T.

Hi,

That plugin version in Sourceforge has never worked with anything else than
deegree WFS. Originally there was a deeJUMP with WFS plugin and that was
developed further to work both with deegree and Geoserver version 1.5.0.
But when the version 1.0.0 was published it had nice additional features
for deegree-WFS (especially WFS-T) but the changes also broke
interoperability with Geoserver. The last WFS plugin version that was
usable with Geoserver 1.5.0 was 0.7 but it does not seem to be in
Sourceforge. However, I do not believe it would work with current
Geoserver version but I can have a try next week. I have a feeling that
it does not work even with recent deegree-WFS versions. I fear it would
need a considerable amount of work to make this very fine WFS client to
work again properly. The plugin is using deegree libraries for handling GML
and coordinate systems and I suppose that our current developers are not so
familiar with them.

The AdbToolbox WFS client is doing the most simple WFS requests with http

successful to that point that the servers were sending out correct GML2 but

It could be worth having this minimalistic but pretty reliable WFS driver
in OpenJUMP. It would be easy to document what it does and what it cannot
do and why it will fail with some services. But if nobody else is
developing it we might get into dead end with it. Even then things were not
worse than now without WFS support at all. Basically this WFS driver is ok,
but it does not support any filters, http POST, WFS version 1.1.0, GML3
etc. which are all more and more needed.

Initial Comment:
How can two identical attribute names happen ?
- with a sql query : ex. select geom, name, name, name from city
(although I don't think a plain table can have duplicate names)
- it can be saved/read to/from a shapefile, a jml (with different results !)
- feature schema edition tool pevent such a schema edition

What happens ?
- a AssertionFailedException is thrown by plugins like
  * combine selected layers
  * clip map to fence
  * there are other problems if one try to change an attribute value using its
name...

What to do ?
The minimum would be to throw a clearer message
Maybe sufficient, automatic renaming seems a bit dangerous
Refusing data loading maybe frustrating (although getting a yellow warning
light be useful)

Summary: Saving long attribute name into shapefile

Initial Comment:
Mail from Jukka related to bug id 3472008 :
What might happen when user is saving into shapefile a dataset with attributes
like "long_attribute_name_01" and "long_attribute_name_02"? Truncating names
to suit the .dbf format would yield to identical names. This is how GDAL
behaves:

Attribute names can only be up to 10 characters long. Longer names will be
silently truncated. This may result in non-unique column names, which will
definitely cause problems later.

Starting with version 1.7, the OGR Shapefile driver tries to generate unique
field names. Successive duplicate field names, including those created by
truncation to 10 characters, will be truncated to 8 characters and appended
with a serial number from 1 to 99.

For example:
 a → a, a → a_1, A → A_2;
 abcdefghijk → abcdefghij, abcdefghijkl → abcdefgh_1

Taken from http://gdal.org/ogr/drv_shapefile.html

Summary: AssertionFailedException with two identical attribute name

Initial Comment:
How can two identical attribute names happen ?
- with a sql query : ex. select geom, name, name, name from city
(although I don't think a plain table can have duplicate names)
- it can be saved/read to/from a shapefile, a jml (with different results !)
- feature schema edition tool pevent such a schema edition

What happens ?
- a AssertionFailedException is thrown by plugins like
  * combine selected layers
  * clip map to fence
  * there are other problems if one try to change an attribute value using its
name...

What to do ?
The minimum would be to throw a clearer message
Maybe sufficient, automatic renaming seems a bit dangerous
Refusing data loading maybe frustrating (although getting a yellow warning
light be useful)

Message:
Problem in CombineSelectedLayers should be fixed, while problem in
ClipMapFence will throw a better message and report the problem in the
outputFrame.

Comment By: michael michaud (michaudm)
Date: 2012-01-11 00:03

Message:
In the case of "combine selected layers", the problem is different.
It is because the Geometry Attribute is not handled properly when it is not
named GEOMETRY or when several layers have different names for Geometry
attribute.
==> The plugin tries to create a second Geometry Attribute

Message:
OK, not sure this is a bug.
That's how the cliboard works :
- make a deep copy in the clipboard (independant from the source)
- keep it in the clipboard so that one can make several paste (another deep
copy)

As a workaround, if you want to empty the clipboard, just copy an empty
layer
Not sure there is something better to do.

Any idea ?

was for schemas... Never for layers. And just doing the same procedure
several times isn't such a big issue from my perspective.

When I close a project window (using a window corner button) - I get asked if I
really want to close "OpenJUMP".
So the message is incorrect, as I am only closing the project - and may confuse
the user.

Another note: With the error message the file dialog gets closed, but
somehow a second dialog instance is still lurking around that can not be

It might be this is related to my fix for data loading on MacOSX?

Initial Comment:
For some reason that I can not figure - I can not change the size of the
attribute window.
However, when I sent the map window to the tray I can resize it. Calling the
map window up again will block the resizing again.

Starting OJ again, seems to solve the problem. I can resize both windows.

Message:
I modified the code on 31/07/2011 : before, classification method was
persistent, but attribute was changed each time a new classification method
was selected.
Now the attribute choice decide which classification method can be choosen,
not the opposite.

But you are right, classification method is lost in cases where it could be
persisted. It is not easy to persist though, because when you open the
dialog, the layer may have changed, the layer decide which attributes are
available and the attribute decide which classification methods are
available.

Another note: With the error message the file dialog gets closed, but
somehow a second dialog instance is still lurking around that can not be
closed.

It might be this is related to my fix for data loading on MacOSX?

yep - in that case it should be disabled because its not a a bug but a
"non-available feature".

But, how does it come that we can load ecw on Ubuntu then. Is the unix
underneath so different?

Summary: Store links to Images in Project file (Standard loader)

Initial Comment:
Links to images in a project are only stored when loaded with the "Sextante
Raster" file loading option (in OJ 1.3). They are not stored when loading with
the standard way (drag and drop - or normal file loader - implementation by
VividSolutions). Check also if MrSid and ecw locations are stored.

--

>Comment By: michael michaud (michaudm)
Date: 2012-02-16 12:00

Message:
This one is supported by OJ but it is hard to discover how. One can save
the image layer as JUMP GML format which will create a XML file which
contains link(s) to the image(s).
Pretty nice feature because image layer can contain a list of images.

Views are listed if there is a corresponding row in the geometry_columns
table.

Run datastore query works even if the view is not registered in

Summary: Bad FillPolygon user experience with large dataset

Initial Comment:
Two problems here :
Bad user experience with large dataset (UI freeze with neither information
message nor progress bar)

--

>Comment By: michael michaud (michaudm)
Date: 2012-02-18 07:20

Message:
Hard work for a small improvement. Now, the process starts a progress bar
instead of freezing.
Even after I have threaded the process, I did not find any way to stop it
from the UI (threaded process does not contain a loop but a single
operation (Polygonizer.getPolygons())
The hard part was to handle the case where the user try to interrupt the
process by clicking several times in the progress bar dialog close cross.

Sometimes, the plugin returns a Polygon which "exterior ring" includes the

eventually containing another candidate Polygon).

Creates a grid with 0.1 resolution
Set snapping on grid option and create a square. ==>
 POLYGON ((

216.8 158.4,
217 158.4,

You can eliminate the 0002 by hand, and it will create a different
square.
This is easily understandable as 0.1+0.1 is not always 0.2 in floating point
arithmetic.
This can have bad effects on some algorithm.

Splitting polygons option often returns a partial result (containing only a
small part of the input dataset)

Message:
Can reproduce the problem with the following steps :
Create two intersecting squares A and B snapped on a 0.1 grid
==> split polygons will produce a single polygon which is the intersection
of A and B polygon A-B and B-A are missing from the result

Now check the geometry, coordinates issued from snap on grid are not
"precise" (something like 123.0002). Make them precise. Now it
works.

Maybe the noder plugin missed a step where input should be made precise.

yup - changing the strings is necessary:
probably we should mark them all like a new string to translate?

Though ideally we would separate closing project and closing OJ (two
different plugins where Closing OJ calls Close Project?). Because we may
want to run more processes for closing projects?

PS: thanks for looking into it

--

>Comment By: michael michaud (michaudm)

Message:
Several problems there :
1) compute intersections when neither split lines nor split polygons was
checked has been broken since a switch from MCIndexNoder to IteratedNoder
=> came back to MCIndexNoder

2) some polygons were not computed with the split_polygon option because of
a bad use of Polygonizer. Polygonizer does not want duplicate segment as
inputs.
- another smaller method in splitting polygons is that it relied on
interior point which can sometimes return point on the boundary (made a
ticket to JTS mailing list)

3) another problem discovered while debugging is that snap-rounding noder
looses z values because of ScaledNoder. I submitted a patch to Martin, and
hopefully, it will be fixed with JTS 1.13 (and OJ 1.6 ?)

or we allow only one copy & paste action.. and can clean-up the copy then
(remove from the clipboard). The only time I copy & pasted several times
was for schemas... Never for layers. And just doing the same procedure
several times isn't such a big issue from my perspective.

Any idea ?

Union tools has an option to merge output multilinestrings.

Topology Plugin can be used to connect two linear datasets.
In some cases, it would be useful to use attribute constraints like \"attribute

yup - changing the strings is necessary:
probably we should mark them all like a new string to translate?

Though ideally we would separate closing project and closing OJ (two
different plugins where Closing OJ calls Close Project?). Because we may
want to run more processes for closing projects?

PS: thanks for looking into it

The easiest fix would be to not differenciate closing OpenJUMP and closing
a task, and to change the message from
Do you really want to close OpenJUMP ?
to
Do you really want to close the project ?
or
Do you really want to close current project(s)

What do you think ?

Initial Comment:
Draw a circle from its center and radius is the only cursor tool opening a
dialog box.
This dialog box has the following behaviour :
- create a layer
- draw a few circles with the tool
- open the attribute window
- close the dialog box of the cursor tool (either by clicking OK or with the
window close button)
- click on the attribute window -> the cursor tool dialog box immediately pops
up again

Message:
Arnd,

What is the problem with the process you describe :
- create your categories
- save your project as template.jmp
- open template.jmp and save it as myproject.jmp when you start a new
project

The only "trap" is that you have to "save your project as" the first time,
otherwise, you'll modify your template.

Summary: EZ Button does not respect layer editability

Initial Comment:
WorkbenchContext seems to be set the first time EZ Button is called, then it is
used unchanged when a shortcut is activated.

Make layerA editable
Create a shortcut to union 2 polygons (Tools>Geometry Edition>Union 2 polygons)
Make layerA read-only
Use the shortcut : polygons are unioned : this is harmful !

Works also in the opposite way
Create the EZ-shorcut when layers are not editable,
There is no more way to use the shortcut on these layers,
even if they are made editable later.

Message:
Fixed in svn 2785
The problem happened only in project with only RasterImageLayer
RasterImageLayer name was not displayed as other layerables because it was
not enumerated in the possible Layerable implementation. The missing
checkbox was causing the error.
Now, RasterImageLayer are displayed as any other layer.
It would be nice to add a special symbol instead of the colorPanel

Summary: One-Click Feature Selection From Attribute Table

Initial Comment:
Hisaji suggested the following two (2) features for OpenJUMP. I am adding them
to the FeatureTracker so that we don't forget.

[1] Select a row or record in an attribute table and select the corresponding
feature dynamically, without having to click on a button.

[2] Select rows or records in an attribute table when the corresponding
features are selected in the map view.

Message:
Agree that having two different level of selection (rows in attribute table
and features in layer view) is unintuitive and unsafe.
Some plugin can work on the attribute table rows (like delete feature with
the delete key) while other will only work on features selected with the
selection manager like AutoAssignAttribute.

On the other hand, selecting features with the selection manager probably
use more ressources than selecting rows in the table, so that synchronizing
both modes would have a penalty.

Initial Comment:
Label rendering has poor performance if labeled polygons are very large (tens
of thousand of points).
Would be useful to introcuce decimation for label placement as we did for the
rendering pipeline.

Summary: Dialog box of "draw circle from center and radius" pops up

Initial Comment:
Draw a circle from its center and radius is the only cursor tool opening a
dialog box.
This dialog box has the following behaviour :
- create a layer
- draw a few circles with the tool
- open the attribute window
- close the dialog box of the cursor tool (either by clicking OK or with the
window close button)
- click on the attribute window -> the cursor tool dialog box immediately pops
up again

Fixed in svn 2796 : now the dialog box is opened by a click on the
cursortool button and only in that case.

Initial Comment:
I just discovered a regression appeared between 1.4.2 and 1.5.0
It appears if you try to do
- Tools>Statistics>AttributeClassification
but it is probably not a problem with this particular plugin.
I think that bug 3510832 is a side effect of the same bug
I also noticed, fixing 3497362 that PlugInContext.getLayerViewPanel did not
work, and that I had to call the workbenchContext first to access the
currentLayerViewPanel, which may be related to the same problem.

i have no clue what the plugin does, but from what i can see :

at
org.openjump.core.ui.plot.Plot2DCanvasOJ.addHistogramPlotOJ(Plot2DCanvasOJ.java:173)
DOES
return addPlot(new HistogramPlot2DOJ(name, c, XY, XY[1][0] -
XY[0][0], context, layer, attrName));

if XY[1][0] and XY[0][0] hold identical values this result in double value
0, which is used to construct HistogramPlot2D where it ends up as
width_constant

which LEADS TO the following condition failing

at org.math.plot.plots.HistogramPlot2D.build(HistogramPlot2D.java:67)
if (width_constant > 0) {

which LEADS TO another routine with an uninitialized variable widths to
fail

at org.math.plot.plots.HistogramPlot2D.build(HistogramPlot2D.java:84)
topLeft[i] = new double[] { XY[i][0] -
factorWidth * widths[i] / 2 +
(offsetCenter_perWidth - 0.5) * widths[i], XY[i][1] };

CONCLUSION:
seems to be a bug in mathplot, but i am unsure if and how it can be worked
around

Summary: Text export failiture to SVG and PDF

Initial Comment:
Labels exported as part of a SVG or PDF map (using either File -> "Save View
As" or "Save image" from the Printer extension) are unreadable in Inkscape
(SVG) or Adobe Reader (PDF). In Inkscape for example, the labels are treated as
paths instead of text (see the attached screen shot).

This is a major bug as many people use Inkscape or other vector editing
programs to improve maps created in Open Jump.

Mhm.. a difficult bug. This could be just a font selection issue. Maybe its
worth to check what the print plugin from Intevation does. However, that
text is treated as path has been happening to me also when I did load other
documents in Inkscape that where not created with OJ.

Well, I've used Arial to label the features for my sample svg. The same
thing happens when using Times New Roman. Even if it's a font issue, we're
talking about the most widely used fonts.

I know that gvSIG has the same issue with text export to pdf/svg, but I
hope something could be done to fix this.

P.S. Can someone correct my spelling error from the request summary:

exception"

https://sourceforge.net/tracker/index.php?func=detail&aid=3510832&group_id=118054&atid=679906
NOTE: FeatureInfo is not updated, this is no simple issue to solve as
schema modification
replaces the whole featurecollection for the layer, which let's
the layer loose selection
and the attribute table loose the old feature object
WORKAROUND: simply close and reopen it

I fixed the NPE (svn 2796), but did not understand why it was thrown. A

Message:
I am remembering (but I may remember wrong) that some other renderers are
also writing each character as a separate path (Mapnik, Mapserver). That's
because that way it is easier to make good looking labels with nice
character spacing for curving labels which are following the lines.
OpenJUMP cannot make such good looking labels in any case so we would have
nothing to loose by using text.

Summary: Add a densify geometry function

Initial Comment:
This function could take place in general Geometry Functions or in a specific
plugin.
It should handle 3d geometries.
One use case is to conflate two linear networks using topology plugin.
It works well if the lines to move have more points than the reference and are
changed into segments before processing.
